Jonathan Hickman is the most rock-solid superstar working in comics today. He is the mastermind behind arguably the best Marvel crossover of all time in Secret Wars. His splashy return to Marvel from a post-Secret Wars creator-owned break was the biggest event in superhero books in the last half-decade, relaunching a stagnant X-Men line with a monster hit in House of X and Powers of X. But X-Men wasn’t his only pitch when he came back to Marvel: he also had a big cosmic idea that Marvel greenlit alongside HoX/PoX: G.O.D.S., a sweeping new series revamping the cosmology of the Marvel Universe and reimagining how cosmic entities like Eternity or the Living Tribunal interact with the heroes we see every day. We talked with Hickman about his big idea and just how small it can be.

Now this was a damn good Oscar Night.
The 95th Academy Awards show sure helped dispel the bad odor of the past few years. Watching the In Memoriam interlude last year, as a cheerleader squad honored dead people by singing “Spirit in the Sky,” I said aloud, “This show can’t possibly get any worse.” But saying this on Oscar Night is like a Mel Brooks movie where someone says, “At least it’s not raining.” Reader, it got worse. But this year was the zippiest, most fun Oscar bash in ages.

An emotional Brendan Fraser won his first Oscar for The Whale, thanking director Darren Aronofsky “for throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard the good ship The Whale.”
Fighting back tears, Fraser credited the other actors in the category by saying “gentlemen, you laid your whale-size hearts bare so that we could see into your souls like no one else could do and it is my honor to be named along side of you in this category.” He also singled out co-star Hong Chau by saying, “I want to tell you that only whales can swim at [her] depth of the talent.”
“I started in this business 30 years ago and things didn’t come easily to me,” Fraser said. “There was a facility that I didn’t appreciate at the time, until it stopped. And I just want to say thank you for this acknowledgement because it couldn’t be done without my cast.

It’s hard not to feel bad for the next few DC movies. While The Flash has been described as a universe reboot, setting up the first chapter of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios plans, dubbed “Gods and Monsters,” the others feel like unwanted leftovers. That’s particularly true of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a movie whose predecessor contained only the slightest Snyderverse connections, but doesn’t seem to be setting up anything in DC Studios’ future.
Of course, we could also talk about the movie as, you know… a movie! Not as a part of a larger story or a franchise extender, but as a two-hour or so piece of entertainment that we watch and enjoy on its own merits. That approach served the first Shazam! well, which updated the Golden Age hero Captain Marvel to not only give him a copyright safe (if infinitely...

It’s been over two years since it was first announced that Amazon Studios and STXfilms were developing a sequel to My Spy, the action-comedy starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman, but it finally appears to be moving forward. It’s been reported that Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman have signed on to return for My Spy 2, along with several other familiar faces and a few new additions.
In addition to Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman, My Spy 2 will also feature the return of Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong, with Anna Faris, Craig Robinson, and Flula Borg joining up as well. The first film told the story of JJ (Bautista), a hardened CIA operative who found himself at the mercy of precocious nine-year-old Sophie (Coleman) after being sent undercover to surveil her family. Among the new additions to the ensemble in the second installment are Anna Faris (Mom), Craig Robinson (The Office) and Flula Borg (Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin).

James Gunn announced a number of new DC movies and TV series earlier this week, but he’s continued to drop teases on social media. One of the big-screen projects announced was Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will be based on comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, but there are other comics that have inspired James Gunn’s new DC Universe.
James Gunn took to Twitter to tease a few of the comics that will help shape the first chapter of the DC Universe.
We're talked a lot about Woman of Tomorrow, but these are more of the comics inspiring #DCStudios and the new #Dcu in these early days. That doesn't mean we're adapting all these comics, but that the feel, the look, or the tone of them are touchstones for our team. Check 'em out! pic.twitter.com/34KrVPeEL5

If you were paying attention to James Gunn and Peter Safran's presentation about the future of DC superhero movies, you may have noticed that something sounded familiar.
No, it's not the fact that we're getting new versions of movies we've already seen before, like Superman and Batman and Swamp Thing. And no, we're not even talking about how it's yet another series of gigantic promises about an interconnected universe in a modern pop culture environment that eats almost all of those up and spits them out.
In addition to all the tantalizing, puzzling, and just plain weird news about the future of DC superhero movies, there was also a curious choice for a title. This first chapter of Gunn and Safran's interconnected universe will be called "Gods and Monsters," and that's a very specific title with a very specific history connected to it.

The future is finally here for DC fans. After years of false starts from a parade of creatives, and months of teases, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran finally shared their vision for DC movies and TV series going forward, christened, simply enough as the Dcu. The pair outlined what they called “the first part of the first chapter” of the Dcu, with that first chapter known as “Gods and Monsters.” It’s a combination of five films and five HBO Max series which will have story elements that weave between each other, and ultimately lay the foundation for a new, cohesive DC Universe.
Of course, it’s not as simple as that (it never is). There are still the four DC movies coming out this year, which Gunn and Safran are playing coy about, including who will stick around as their current characters. However, Gunn said that...

Long regarded as one of Hollywood’s genuine good men, Brendan Fraser saw a meteoric rise to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s. During this time, Fraser starred in a true blockbuster franchise with The Mummy trilogy. And he was also lauded for roles in highly acclaimed dramas like The Quiet American and Gods and Monsters. But not every movie has been a hit. And when Fraser was working on Furry Vengeance, he reconsidered his career.

If all of the references to the history and mythology of ancient Egypt in "Moon Knight" made you look like Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) in the image above, don't worry; I've got you covered. The latest Disney+ series is based on the Marvel comics of the same name, but they are both heavily inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology. After all, Steven Grant and his alter-ego Marc Spector are the vessel for the Egyptian god of the moon, Khonsu (spelled Khonshu in the comics/series), and he does battle with the forces of the goddess of judgment, Ammit. These gods have their basis in the myths and...

Since 1997, Rahsaan Patterson has specialized in handsome songs, loving and lovelorn, packed with vocal pirouettes, supple pleading, and lush harmonies. The singer draws from R&b’s venerable Quiet Storm tradition, making music that would fit comfortably next to oldies by Anita Baker and Stevie Wonder. But when Patterson entered the music industry in the Nineties, R&b was growing less interested in “Quiet” and more interested in “Storm” — a certain amount of musical thunder was necessary to compete with hip-hop.

In setting the frame for the Cold War Poland thriller “Operation Hyacinth” – which plays in the Polish Films Competition section of this week’s EnergaCamerimage Film Festival – cinematographer Piotr Sobocinski says he found himself in a race against time.
The Dp, who’s filmed dark stories in critical successes such as “Corpus Christi” and “Hatred,” is not referring to the constraints of the low-budget film’s 27-day shoot when he says he felt his location options were fading fast.
Instead, Sobocinski says, he was shocked to learn that some 90% of the Warsaw locations that looked right for a communist-era setting during his 2014 film “Gods” have now been either torn down or developed into modern facilities.
He and director Piotr Domalewski wanted as many authentic backgrounds as possible for their fact-based story of a secret police operation targeting gay men, Sobocinski says. What’s more, to help convey the sense of...

This article contains Zack Snyder’s Justice League spoilers.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a lot of movie. It’s four hours plus of superhero action with some heavy mythological overtones. And it’s ending isn’t even a single ending to this story…it’s multiple endings. And each of these multiple endings is meant to set up a host of spinoff movies and Justice League sequels that we will unfortunately never get to see!
We’ll consider the “main” ending of the film, the one that wraps up the initial story begun in 2013’s Man of Steel, to be the defeat of Steppenwolf. But from there, we get several epilogues, and that’s where things get even more complicated. There are no post-credits scenes in Zack Snyder’s Justice League because, well, it doesn’t need them, but the “additional endings” kind of serve the same purpose.

Evangeline Lilly may have become the first of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s female heroes to get their name in the title of a movie, but her future as part of the franchise is now the source of constant speculation. After making some tone-deaf comments about the rapidly-accelerating Coronavirus pandemic that seemed to indicate she believed the whole thing was a hoax, fans were demanding that Marvel remove her from their shared universe.
While the actress is widely speculated to fulfill her contract and star in the upcoming Ant-Man 3, there have been rumors that it won’t be extended beyond that, with Marvel and owners Disney keen to distance themselves from any negative publicity. However, we’ve now heard that whether or not Lilly remains part of the McU, she could end up joining another comic book franchise in a major role.

For those of us unlucky enough (or not made of money) to have grabbed one of the many limited physical versions of retro-shooter Ultracore, Inin Games have finally released the game digitally across all the major consoles – surprisingly including the Ps Vita! We’re looking at the Nintendo Switch version which, given the platforms current home to a myriad of indie games and retro re-releases, seems like the perfect home for a game born out of the 16-bit era.
Programmed by Digital Illusions (aka Dice) all the way back in 1994 for release on the Sega MegaDrive and Commodore Amiga, The 16-bit giants in the UK, Ultracore was sadly cancelled by publisher Psygnosis who, it seems, feared the game would be outdated in a time when 32-bit gaming was very much on the horizon. Anna Schafer (Elizabeth Blue) has been tapped to star in Whose Child, a socially conscious film about undetected domestic child abuse from director Roxy Shih and producer Autumn Federici. The pic, which is slated to shoot in Los Angeles this fall with plans for a theatrical release, follows a woman (Schafer) working in public relations at a children’s hospital who gets her life turned around when she is assigned to be an “Auntie” for a young boy named Billy. Billy’s case is severe; he’s suffering from heavy head trauma, is in a coma, and is barely hanging on to life. When she realizes that the incident was a domestic abuse case, she takes matters into her own hands to overturn a system that would have otherwise failed him. Federici is producing under The Ninth House banner with partner Jake Helgren. Shih and Federici first worked together on...

The recent announcement that the Snyder Cut of Justice League was finally happening may have finally given fans their wish after two and a half years of relentless online campaigning, but it could also serve to further muddy the waters of the Dceu’s timeline in the future, especially if the success of Snyder’s original vision leads to Warner Bros. deciding to revive their interest in either a Man of Steel sequel or even Justice League Part 2 as they initially intended.
With Darkseid officially confirmed to appear in the Snyder Cut, many have been wondering if that would have any impact on Ava DuVernay’s New Gods, which is currently slated to feature Darkseid as the main villain. The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker has been attached to the comic book adaptation since March 2018, but like many projects announced by DC and Warner Bros. over the past few years, there’s...

In a category that is mostly dominated by Hollywood productions, particularly since epic films demand a rather significant budget, it is also interesting to highlight that Asia has also had its share of epics, most of which are of significant quality, even considered masterpieces. Samurais, historic events, wuxia, fantasy are all elements included in the movies of the list, which, once more, aims at diversity.
Most of these films are co-productions from companies from many countries. “Mongol” for example is a co-production between Russia, Germany, Kazakhstan and China. Instead of filling the titles with countries, we chose to just mention the country that the main story is based. Thus, in the case of “Mongol”, Mongolia is mentioned as the country of origin.
Without further ado, here are 20 excellent Asian epic movies, in alphabetic order

Long-established as fan favorites in the DC universe, the New Gods were introduced by Jack Kirby in the 1970s through the planets of New Genesis and Apokolips. Part of Kirby’s “Fourth World” series, these planets are ruled by god-like beings, including Darkseid on Apokolips, and New Genesis heroes such as Big Barda and Mister Miracle. While being a part of the Dceu, including Ava DuVernay’s upcoming New Gods movie, their presence in the Arrowverse has seemingly been referenced via the ongoing “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event.
The “Crisis,” which is set to wrap up on January 14th, has already introduced many cameos, returning characters and other twists as it ends one chapter of the Arrowverse saga. What many perhaps missed though, at least according to FandomWire, was the inclusion of the New Gods as part of Arrowverse canon. The evidence for this claim comes in the third part of the “Crisis,...

The story of Orlando Jones’ dismissal from American Gods took another turn today when SAG-aftra announced that they’ll be looking into the circumstances around the actor’s departure. For those not in the know, Jones has publicly criticized American Gods for letting him go due to apparent differences over the racial politics of the show. Since then, various figures have added their comments, while producers Fremantle have denied that their decision was based on race. Jones is now considering suing the company though and his case could get more serious now that SAG-aftra are involved.
The Screen Artists Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists is a powerful force in the entertainment industry, and were already investigating Fremantle following talks with other members who claim unfair treatment. A spokesperson for SAG-aftra had this to say:
“After initial meetings with Gabrielle Union and her representatives about her experiences on America’s Got Talent,...

The circumstances of Orlando Jones’ firing from American Gods are getting murkier by the day, and the actor is now considering suing the show’s producers Fremantle.

When Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles was first offered the opportunity to direct what would become The Two Popes, he was intrigued by what was presented to him. It was initially a project focused squarely on Pope Francis, an intriguing and divisive figure in South America. But he was caught up directing the Opening Ceremony of the Rio Olympics, a project that took two years of his time. And when he was finally free, Anthony McCarten’s play about Francis had been transformed by the writer into the two-hander we see today. “It’s a beautiful, reinvented script,” Meirelles says.
He was ready to jump in because he felt the movie was very relevant for these times. “The big thing about the film is it is about tolerance,” he says. “We have a President in Brazil who’s a total moron. Families are splitting up because of this guy. This is...

A ‘relaxation game’ with more game play than I usually see in the genre, Aer: Memories of Old plays out as almost a gentle tutorial into the world of 3D platform games. The bird-transformation mechanic and sense of openness that it gives however, is really saucy.
Sent out on a mission to the lost land of Gods, you play the last shapeshifter, able to not only traverse the hidden dungeons of the world but also the ability to transform into a bird and fly across the dozens of floating islands that make up the game.
Presented in a low-polygonal style, the game runs quite smoothly and the sense of movement in the skies makes air-travel a real highlight, especially when combined with the lulling music and sounds. You can chat to a handful of NPCs that are scattered around but the bulk of the game is spent moving from place...

The Boys launches July 26 on Amazon Prime Video and is currently in production for season 2 now. The Boy’s is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, and influential as politicians are revered as Gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven, and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that manages these superheroes and covers up all of their dirty secrets. The Boys are Billy Butcher, Hughie, Mother’s Milk, Frenchie, and The Female. Simon Pegg (“Mission: Impossible – Fallout”) guest stars as Hughie’s father. The Supes of The Seven is led by Homelander who is joined by Starlight, Queen Maeve, A-Train, The Deep and Black Noir.
