Netflix Responds to Playback Speed Backlash: ‘We’ve Been Sensitive to Creator Concerns’
Netflix has clarified its intentions with its test of allowing users to speed up or slow down content playback speeds, saying that the company has been sensitive to creator concerns with the feature and has no plans to roll out a new feature in the short term.

Netflix vice president Keela Robison wrote in a blog post late Monday that the ability to vary playback speeds on Netflix shows or movies — as slow as half the original speed or 1.5 times faster — is a test limited only to Android mobile devices and is a feature that has frequently been requested by users.

“We’ve been sensitive to creator concerns and haven’t included bigger screens, in particular TVs, in this test,” Robison wrote. “We have no plans to roll any of these tests out in the short term. And whether we introduce these features for everyone at some point will depend on the feedback we receive.

Trailer Watch: Gillian Jacobs, Vanessa Bayer, and Phoebe Robinson are BFFs in “Ibiza”

“Love” is over but Gillian Jacobs has found romance abroad. A trailer has dropped for “Ibiza,” a comedy that sees the “Community” alumna heading to Barcelona for work and reluctantly agreeing to take her friends along for the trip.

Initially worried about being distracted by her friends, Harper (Jacobs) has an amazing time in Spain with Nikki and Leah — so amazing that she doesn’t want the party to stop. “My give-a-fuck meter is at zero,” she tells her pals. When Harper forms a “real connection” with a DJ at a club, her friends convince her to fly to Ibiza to watch him play a set — and see him one last time — before they leave the continent and return to New York. The only problem is that Harper has an important meeting the next night in Barcelona.

“This is destiny. Some people land on the moon. Others cure diseases.

Cannes 2018: 15 Movies We Can’t Wait to See at the World’s Most Exciting Film Festival

  • Indiewire
With its flashy red carpet premieres and hectic market, the Cannes Film Festival presents the grandest film industry spectacle in the world. With all the lively images of celebrities walking around outside the theaters, and news of dealmaking taking place in the Marché du Film, it’s almost too easy to forget that Cannes is actually a showcase for new movies, and one that faces more pressure to deliver quality than any other program out there. For 71 years, Cannes has asserted its dominance as the preeminent showcase for international cinema. Even as the way movies are seen and discussed continues to evolve, Cannes remains one constant on the world stage.

Of course, the 2018 edition has already demonstrated the contrast between the festival’s priorities and industry shifts after a public feud with Netflix led the platform to pull its movies from the lineup, while the distributors for some high-profile titles

Paramount Is Planning 2 Very Different Star Trek Movies

Paramount Is Planning 2 Very Different Star Trek Movies
Not one, but two new Star Trek movies are being developed by Paramount. We've known for a bit now that the studio was working on at least a couple of different new Trek related projects, but now Paramount head Jim Gianopulos has confirmed that two different movies in the franchise are in active development, news that was announced during CinemaCon in Las Vegas this past week. Unfortunately, he didn't dish any additional details, but this makes for an interesting confirmation, considering what we already know.

Starting with the more recent development, it came to light in December that Quentin Tarantino is working on a Star Trek Movie with J.J. Abrams. The Pulp Fiction director pitched the idea to Abrams and the duo then took it to Paramount. The studio then assembled a writer's room to flesh out the idea and, ultimately, Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) was hired to pen

Star Trek 4 Makes Franchise History with First Female Director

Star Trek 4 Makes Franchise History with First Female Director
S.J. Clarkson is about to boldly go where no female director has ever gone before, to take the helm of a Star Trek movie. Paramount Pictures announced during their CinemaCon panel today that they are currently developing two separate Star Trek movies, one of which is being developed by Quentin Tarantino and J.J. Abrams, but sources say that project is still being written and would come after Star Trek 4, which S.J. Clarkson has signed on to direct. Star Trek 4 had been in the works for nearly two years, but after Tarantino's Star Trek project got some steam, it wasn't clear if Star Trek 4 would happen, until today, with S.J. Clarkson becoming the first ever female director to take the helm of a Star Trek movie.

Star Trek 4 was first revealed in July 2016, just days before the release of Star Trek Beyond. There were rumors that Chris Hemsworth would

‘Love, Gilda’ Director On Meeting Gene Wilder & Why Some Gilda Radner ‘SNL’ Peers Aren’t In The Doc – Tribeca

  • Deadline
One of the big questions many have coming away from Lisa D’Apolito’s mesmerizing feature documentary Love, Gilda which kicked off Tribeca on Wednesday is why Gilda Radner Saturday Night Live peers Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and even Father Guido Sarducci (aka Don Novello) aren’t interviewed in the movie.

Truth be told D’Apolito did in fact reach out to all of Radner’s peers -well over 100 names- however, some never responded. No hard feelings, D’Apolito gets it.

“It’s hard for everybody (to talk about Radner),” says the director, “People loved her so much and to talk about her, was very painful because it brought back that loss. I totally understand why people didn’t want to be in it. It’s personal.”

Of those SNL folks who worked with Radner in the doc are her writing partner Alan Zweibel, SNL producer Lorne Michaels, Martin Short

Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer and Brian De Palma On ‘Scarface’ F-Bombs, Chainsaw And Origin Story – Tribeca

Reprising some familiar stories but filling in plenty of fond nuance, the lead actors and director of Scarface marked the film’s 35th anniversary with a crowd-pleasing Q&A session Thursday night at the Tribeca Film Festival.

After a screening of the 1983 film, director Brian De Palma joined Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer and Steven Bauer (who played Tony Montana’s gangster partner) to reminisce. As they were brought onstage one by one, the sold-out Beacon Theatre crowd let out loud, concert-worthy roars and gave Pacino a standing ovation before anyone had uttered a word.

“Bombast was part of what we were trying to say with the movie,” Pacino said. “It was bigger than life.”

Pacino recalled stumbling on the original 1932 Scarface when it was playing at the long-shuttered Tiffany Theatre on Sunset Boulevard in L.A. Seeing star Paul Muni on screen, he remembered thinking, “I want to be him!

Tina Fey Pays Emotional Tribute To Gilda Radner At Tribeca Opener ‘Love, Gilda’: “We All Saw That And Said, ‘I Want To Do That'”

  • Deadline
Keeping with one of its themes this year on female empowerment, the Tribeca Film Festival opened last night with a doc about one of the city’s 1970s comedy trailblazers, Saturday Night Live‘s Gilda Radner, with the CNN film Love, Gilda.

It’s the second time that Tribeca has opened with a documentary about one of Gotham’s institutions, 2015’s opener being the SNL time capsule feature Live From New York!

However, Love, Gilda delves into the intricacies of Radner’s life from her childhood weight problems to her segue from Toronto’s comedy scene to SNL, and ultimately how she was determined to keep laughing as she battled ovarian cancer before her death in 1989. Much of this is bolstered by director Lisa D’Apolito’s access to a significant amount of Radner’s archives including footage, photos, taped and written diaries.

Radner was a beacon for future female sketch comedians,

Robert De Niro Slams Trump As ‘Lowlife-in-Chief’ & Praises Press As ‘Saviors’ – Tribeca Film Festival

  • Deadline
Typically Tribeca Film Festival press luncheons preview their annual lineup, with a reminder of the event’s social and economic impact to downtown New York in the years post-9/11. However, Tribeca co-boss and two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro kicked off this year’s 17th annual event at Thalassa Restaurant by jabbing at his favorite punching bag: President Donald Trump.

“Look at all the Fake News writers here today,” joked Robert De Niro to several laughs.

“The country has had a bad year, and you — the press – have taken a lot of hits. America is being run by a madman who wouldn’t recognize the truth if it came inside a bucket of his beloved Colonel Sanders Fried Chicken,” exclaimed De Niro.

“When he doesn’t like what he hears, he dismisses it by saying it’s un-American and damning it as ‘fake news’. But we know the truth. All

Could ‘Love Never Dies’ Live Again on Broadway?

Could ‘Love Never Dies’ Live Again on Broadway?
Like the Phantom of the Opera — and “The Phantom of the Opera” — “Love Never Dies” isn’t dead yet.

The musical, mega-composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to his record-breaking smash “Phantom of the Opera,” is showing signs of life on the road in the U.S., where the title is turning heads at the box office after a dispiritingly brief premiere engagement on the West End eight years ago.

“We’ve got eight shows on the road right now, and ‘Love Never Dies’ is outselling them all,” said Randy Buck, CEO of Troika Entertainment, the touring musical producer with road versions of “An American in Paris” and “On Your Feet!” among its stable. “Love” is doing so well, in fact, that Buck cops to bigger dreams for the show.

“Broadway is certainly a possibility,” he said. “We are looking at that for early next year. I think we would come in,
