Oscar-winning writer-director Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) and Egyptian writer Mariam Naoum (Between Two Seas) have been attached to co-write the serial killer series The Alexandria Killings from Front Row Filmed Entertainment and Rocket Science’s Middle East-based Yalla Yalla.
Set in 1920 Alexandria when Egypt was under British rule, the series will chronicle the true story of Egyptian sisters Raya and Sakina. The sisters came from a poor Alexandria neighborhood and rose from poverty to run a glamorous brothel operation, drawing on a powerful and influential circle of Egyptian and British officers, informants, and statesmen. The rise and fall of their empire found the sisters relying more and more on petty theft, leading to the murder of 17 women in crimes of opportunity.
Producers on the show are Gianluca Chakra, Thorsten Schumacher, and Terry George. The companies say the project will form the first part of a Mena-based true crime anthology series...

ESPN has expanded its first “MegaCast” of Sunday’s NFL Wild Card playoff game to include streaming service ESPN+ and five Disney networks: ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, Freeform and ESPN Deportes.
The Baltimore Ravens-Tennessee Titans matchup will also include a halftime performance by DJ Khaled airing exclusively on Freeform, during a “watch party” hosted by the network.
The game kicks off at 1Pm Et in the middle of a six-game weekend playoff blitz. The NFL added an extra wild card team to both of its conferences before this season, in a bid to heighten the postseason drama. Heading into yesterday’s games, as many as 35 different game combinations were possible before the final matchups were determined.

One of the more pleasant Cyberpunk 2077 surprises so far has been the game’s diverse selection of incredible weapons that can drastically change the way you play the game.
While most of the guns you loot in the aftermath of Cyberpunk 2077‘s gunfights offer little more than slight statistical advantages over similar weapons, Cyberpunk 2077‘s open-world contains a variety of iconic guns that offer advantages you won’t find anywhere else.
So if you’re tired of relying on the same selections of pistols, rifles, and shotguns, be sure to hunt down some of the best (and most enjoyable) weapons in Cyberpunk 2077.
Lizzie
Where to Find It: In the basement of Lizzie’s after completing The Space in Between.
This iconic weapon can be found relatively early in the game but may end up lasting you for quite some time thanks to its ability to fire additional rounds with every shot.

Thanksgiving is certainly a time for giving thanks and reflection — especially during this time. HBO’s special event Between the World and Me from Ta-Nehisi Coates as it tells an urgent story of hope and resilience. It initially debuted on November 21 but starting on November 25 and through November 30, Between the World and Me will be available for free on HBOMax.com, HBO.com, On Demand and will re-air on good ol’ fashioned linear television via HBO’s Thanksgiving free preview weekend.
The special event is an adaptation of Coates’ best-selling book and Apollo stage performance of the same name. The book is recognized as a classic of the Black Lives Matter era and during a global pandemic against the backdrop of the killing of Breonna Taylor and global protests for Black lives. With days to spare before the opening night of this year’s Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival, organizers were suddenly forced to contend with a dramatic spike in coronavirus cases in Greece’s second city, prompting them to scrap plans for a hybrid edition and move entirely online.
The sudden reversal, said festival director Orestis Andreadakis, was “really, really difficult,” but not entirely unforeseen, as the country grapples with a second wave of Covid-19 that has far outpaced the first wave in the spring. Contingency plans were already in place, as Andreadakis and his colleagues spent months preparing for a variety of scenarios. “It was extremely difficult, because it was as if [we were] preparing three festivals” at the same time, he said.
On Nov. 3, the Greek government introduced a raft of new measures determined to halt the pandemic’s spread, including a curfew in both Thessaloniki and the country’s capital, Athens,...

The previously postponed Queer East Film Festival returns to cinemas across the UK with an additional seven films added to the original programme this October. Reimagined as a season-long showcase, the festival’s in-person cinema screenings will now go beyond London to include Manchester, Nottingham and Bristol, as well as offer UK-wide virtual screenings for audiences to enjoy at home.
Queer East is a celebration of queer storytelling and activism in East and Southeast Asia and aims to uplift and amplify the voices of those marginalised in the LGBTQ+ community. Spanning over 50 years of filmmaking, the first edition of Queer East is a mix of classic retrospectives and new releases, to explore how culture, law, history, and social norms have affected and built the current queer Asian landscape.
Festival Director and Programmer of Queer East, Yi Wang says:
“Global events this year have yet again reminded us of the importance of reflecting on equalities.

Chris Hillman couldn’t have chosen a better song title for this excerpted chapter from his upcoming memoir, Time Between — out November 17th via BMG. The chapter, which covers the end of the Sixties, is called “Sin City,” a song off the Flying Burrito Brothers’ 1969 debut, In the Gilded Palace of Sin.
Below, Hillman recounts the founding of the Burrito Brothers, his relationship with bandmate Gram Parsons and more, but casts it against the tumultuous backdrop of 1969, including the Manson murders and Altamont — tragedies that, in 2020, still resonate in harrowing ways.

Following a frustrating experience with 2017’s It Comes At Night, writer/director Trey Edward Shults found a “therapeutic and cathartic” experience in mounting his third feature, Waves.
Feeling the pressure that comes when one’s work is falsely framed, or misunderstood, Shults channeled it into Waves protagonist Tyler (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), a young wrestler in South Florida who becomes unglued following an injury, soon grappling with the consequences of a tragedy he never saw coming. A diptych that switches, midway through, to the perspective of Tyler’s younger sister Emily (Taylor Russell), the film ultimately examines the way in which a suburban family comes together, in the aftermath of loss.
“It was healing to channel those emotions into a new thing, and then just try to make something that was all of me, as a human being, with human beings I love so much,” Shults tells Deadline. “Honestly, making Waves...

As one of the most popular stars in the movie business, one that’s enjoying a huge career renaissance after a recent string of critical and commercial hits, Keanu Reeves is arguably more in demand now than at any other point in his decades-long Hollywood career.
In 2019 alone, the 55 year-old has starred in the hugely successful third installment in the John Wick franchise, voiced a character in Pixar’s billion-dollar smash Toy Story 4, sent himself up twice thanks to cameo appearances in Netflix comedies Always Be My Maybe and Between Two Ferns: The Movie, and even popped up in the trailer for the next Spongebob Squarepants movie.
Next up on the slate for the actor is long-awaited sequel Bill & Ted Face the Music, which sees him returning as Theodore ‘Ted’ Logan for the first time since 1991’s Bogus Journey. After that, Reeves will move on to another belated sequel...

Tragedy, resilience, and family ties are at the heart of Netflix’s upcoming family drama “Northern Rescue.” Created by David Cormican, the series debuted on the streaming service March 1.
Following the West family in the midst of tragedy and loss, the first two of the series’ ten episodes seethe death of the family matriarch, which then spurs the patriarch, John West (Billy Baldwin), to pick up and move his three children Maddie (Amalia Williamson), Scout (Spencer Macpherson) and Taylor (Taylor Thorne) back to his childhood home of Turtle Bay Island to live with his sister-in-law Charlie (Kathleen Robertson), where he takes a job as the head of the sleepy town’s search and rescue team.
Cormican is no stranger to Netflix — he’s worked with streaming giant before on what he calls “sci-fi genre-skewing” shows like “Between” and “Shadow Hunters” as well as on historical drama “Tokyo Trial.”

Netflix's new series Tidelands is a first for the streaming platform: it's the inaugural Australian series to be exclusively produced and distributed on Netflix! The new fantasy mystery centers on a small Aussie fishing village where a mysterious death leads an investigator to discover that the townspeople are actually magical creatures: half siren, half human. It's an intriguing concept, but will we see a second season?
So far, nothing has been confirmed by either Netflix or the creative team, but Netflix's history with both international series and supernatural shows could be a clue. This is the first Australian Netflix original, but the platform has produced original series with several other countries, from Britain's The Crown to Spain's Cable Girls and Germany's Dark. These shows have had a range of receptions, but it seems like the more a show can make its own brand, the better it does. Tidelands'...

Link has always been a character of few words, so it almost seems like a joke to say he's had 11 voice actors voice him over the years, but it's absolutely true. We're talking from the time Jonathan Potts first gave the character a speaking role in 1989's The Legend Of Zelda television series, all the way to Breath Of The Wild. Here are some facts on these voice actors who landed the gig of the century as they net money just grunting and screaming their way through a game.

In total Matsumoto has voiced the character in 8 games, and only two of those games are canon (Windwaker and Phantom Hourglass). Hilariously enough, Matsumoto has voiced the...

The mood got decidedly funnier and edgier in this year’s Emmy race for Original Music and Lyrics. It was a badly needed tonic for the country. Most notably, Tina Fey joined the musical fray for the first time, looking for her 10th Emmy with the hilarious “Hell No,” a tribute to Beyonce’s “Lemonade” (featuring an enraged Tituss Burgess) from “Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.”
But, given the current zeitgeist, it’s not surprising that Chance the Rapper was nominated for his Run-d.M.C.–inspired rap tribute to Obama, “Last Christmas,” from “Saturday Night Live,” or that Rachel Bloom was back again with the raunchy “We Tapped That Ass” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” There was even room for the excruciatingly uncomfortable “The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and and the animated burlesque of “Jing-a-Ling-a-Ling” from “Duck the Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special.”

The Hollywood Reporter has learned Amy Acker, star of Angel and Person of Interest, has been cast as the female lead in Fox’s as-yet-untitled X-Men pilot.
She’ll join fellow newcomers Emma Dumont and Percy Hynes White (Between) as Kate Stewart, a “woman who is struggling with her separation from her husband and her increasingly challenging teenage children. When her family situation takes a dark turn, she finds that she’s stronger than she thinks.”
If you’ve been keeping track of Fox’s casting spree hitherto, you’ll know that’s the motherly anchor of Matt Nix’s spinoff mutant story who, alongside Stephen Moyer’s character Reed, attempts to ward off a potential family crisis by gathering her erratic, superpowered children and hitting the road. Pursued by a nefarious agency, their search for a safe haven leads them to an underground mutant colony, which houses such gifted...

For every Sundance Film Festival movie that sells for a big sum, there’s another one that doesn’t.
While hordes of buyers scatter throughout Park City over the next week, a Sundance premiere from two years ago quietly hits theaters on January 27 with little fanfare. “I Am Michael,” Justin Kelly’s perceptive and troubling look at gay-activist-turned-Christian-pastor Michael Glatze (James Franco), hits theaters and VOD long after the Sundance hype has moved on. It’s a missed opportunity for the movie, in which Franco gives one his most complex performances, as audiences struggle alongside the character’s tragic sense of conflict with his faith.
At a divided moment in American history, it’s a shrewd look at conflicting values at the root of modern society. But no distributor took a gamble on it when its fleeting spotlight in Utah came and went; now, dumped onto digital platforms at the start of the year,...

25. “Game of Thrones,” “The Winds of Winter”
This was a crucial season for “Game of Thrones” co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who, in their sixth year nurturing this beast into life, had to go off-book for the first time since author George R.R. Martin had been outstripped by the TV series. Although the pair pulled off an epic ninth episode — the signature stunner in seasons past — it was the finale that came together the best this year. The opening sequence alone is worth the price of admission because it certainly brings words like “cinematic” to mind. Set to a gorgeous score by Ramin Djawadi, the scene was deftly shepherded by director Miguel Sapochnik to create an almost sadistic amount of tension as we waited for Cersei’s green revenge to be unleashed. Once the catastrophic event occurred though, that was not the end of the dragon ride for us viewers.

On the heels of Telefilm Canada’s pledge on November 11 that half of its projects will be directed or written by women in a move to close the industry gender gap by 2020, the Whistler Film Festival (Nov 30 — Dec 4) was proud to present an unprecedented number of female focused films, talent, events and awards throughout its 2016 programs.
The festival featured a record 31 (36%) films all directed by women (including 15 feature films out of 50 and 16 short films out of 36). Wff also has 38 (58%) female filmmakers out of the 66 Canadian artists confirmed to date participating in 11 talent programs — including 22 directors, 6 producers, 3 screenwriters, 2 actors, and 5 musicians/bands in the Music Showcase. Add this to the talent confirmed to attend the festival in support of their films and projects, including award winning director and screenwriter Deepa Mehta (An Anatomy Of Violence), director Ingrid Veninger (Hockey Night), director Kirsten Carthew (The Sun At Midnight) and director Martine Blue...

It’s a funny thing, watching David Cronenberg’s early films now with 40 years of work to his credit. He’s a director whose movies have a reputation for being cold, clinical, and cerebral. He is known for his fascination with body horror, but approaches it from the remoteness of a distant observer rather than as a fellow human being. And while some of this characterization may be correct, very little of it accurately describes his early efforts, including 1977’s Rabid, Cronenberg’s second-ever horror movie (following Shivers, aka They Came From Within) and his fourth feature film overall, now out on a special edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory.
At the time most famous for giving adult film superstar Marilyn Chambers her first leading role in a mainstream movie, Rabid is one of several variations on a theme Cronenberg made in the first half of his career, in which he...

Between 1896 and 1912, Georges Méliès directed over 500 films, and his work during this crucial period of early cinema has left an indelible legacy in the past century. Pioneering early narrative films and employing theatrical illusions, Méliès’ films are powerful examples of what seemingly “simple” technological achievement can accomplish. Films like “A Trip to the Moon” (1902) and “The Impossible Voyage” (1904) still command attention after all of these years because of the imagination and craft on display.

Now, researchers at the Czech national film archives have found two-minute 1904 silent film “Match de Prestidigitation” by Méliès thought to have been lost forever. In the film, a magician divides himself into two; the doubles then take turns performing magic before joining back together again.
“The reel was titled ‘Les Transmutations Imperceptibles,’ which is the name of another work by Méliès.

A company known for producing shows that span multiple social media platforms is teaming up with a leading lady who has a big social presence of her own. Canvas Media Studios, founded in 2014 by Bernie Su and David Tochterman, has signed a development deal with actress Jennette McCurdy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The deal will include multiple scripted projects, all of which will tie in the sort of “transmedia” integrations that have defined Su’s work over the past few years. McCurdy is a sensible partner for Canvas’ brand of content; she has shown her digital media prowess since iCarly’s 2012 end, particularly through a series called What’s Next For Sarah in which she poked fun at her teen sitcom career. She also has a lot of fans on social media; one would think that many of her 6.3 million Twitter followers will happily engage with Canvas’ interactive programming.

Donald Trump's controversial statements about the parents of fallen Muslim U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan have been "blown hugely out of proportion," according to the Gop nominee's son. In an interview on CBS This Morning Tuesday, Eric Trump defended his father's repeated attacks on Khizr and Ghazala Khan following a moving tribute to their son, who died in 2004 from an Iraqi suicide bombing, at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday. "I think this is something that was honestly blown hugely out of proportion," Eric said when he was asked whether he believed his father was wrong for his comments,...

For any self-respecting horror fan, Greg Nicotero is a legend. Cutting his early blood-stained teeth working as a makeup artist under Tom Savini and George Romero, he’s worked (as you’ll read below) with just about every great genre director and has gone on to become, for many of us, the strongest episode director of The Walking Dead.

“Back to the Future” has die-hard fans all around the world (a fact probably more evident today, on the long-awaited October 21, than on any other day). And the beloved comedy sci-fi flick has no shortage of famous fans. Among those famous fans are “Being Human” and “Battlestar Galactica” actor Sam Witwer, “Hatchet” writer-director Adam Green and “iCarly" alum Jennette McCurdy, whose latest project is the Netflix series “Between.” All three told HitFix a bit about why they adore the 1985 movie about a 17-year-old kid and his tale of temporal displacement. McCurdy watches “Back to the Future” on her birthday every year, and one year she had an Enchantment Under the Sea-themed birthday party. “I even play the soundtrack in my car if I’m driving around on my birthday,” she said. The 23-year-old actress has a slew of “Back to the Future” collectables, including Marty and Doc bobbleheads, a DeLorean keychain,...

Teen Lust stars Woodbridge, Ontario’s Jesse Carere as Neil, a high school student whose parents worship Satan. Unbeknownst to Neil, he’s going to be sacrificed to the Dark Lord on the eve of his 18th birthday thanks to his status as a virgin. When he finds out, he realizes the only way to save his life is to stop being a virgin, and fast. As you can imagine, the shoot involved a litany of embarrassing, intimate acts.
Yet the thing Carere remembers most about making Teen Lust has nothing to do with any of them.
“My hair, for sure. It was like a happy accident,” he says over the phone from New York, where he’s playing tourist while his girlfriend and co-star from TV’s "Between", Jennette McCurdy, is in town doing press.
“We didn’t know what we were going to do with my hair,” continues Carere.

Netflix will bring back its first original Canadian series. The streaming video-on-demand platform has renewed the epidemic survival thriller Between, starring Jennette McCurdy, for a second season.
Produced in association with Canada’s City TV, Between tells the story of the Pretty Lake community, who can’t figure out why an outbreak is killing off people over the age of 21 and forcing the rest into quarantine. McCurdy, previously known for her work in iCarly, stars in the lead role of Wiley. The actress made the announcement about the Netflix show’s renewal via a tweet, stating that “the quarantine is not yet over.”
The debut episode of Between season one premiered on May 21, 2015 for Netflix subscribers outside of Canada. What does it take to get to know someone? Like truly, to know someone. Greg (Thomas Mann) drifts through his high-school days by casually interacting with all of the social circles. He’s perfectly content with his surface level “friendships” he has with the jocks, the techno-geeks, the white-guy hip-hop kid – never taking the time to go too far out of his way to get to know any of them and always hiding his own life in the process. Even Earl (R.J. Cyler) is never described as a friend by Greg, instead he’s called a co-worker due to the film spoofs they make together. All of this changes though when Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) forces him to go visit the girl from school that was diagnosed with cancer. What soon develops though between Greg and the dying Rachel (Olivia Cook) calls into question Greg’s impersonal way of getting through life.

Netflix's sci-fi series Between reaches new lows in its fifth and penultimate episode. Here's Mark's review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.5 End Of The Rope
The quality of the writing and performing demonstrate no ambitions to improve in the penultimate Between. If it wasn’t already, the game is up in episode 5.
And by that I mean that the show entirely throws off any premise of being ‘science fiction’, because instead what it turns out to be is a cheap, cliché-riddled and uninteresting show about teenage angst. But what really shocks me is the lack of variation between the characters, because other than their appearance it would be hard to separate them based purely on their ability to make poor choices or how generally deluded they are.
It starts with Pat doing the right thing, by doing the wrong thing, sending Wiley to get medical supplies while holding her baby hostage.
