Few Grammy Awards were as memorable as the 57th annual event. That night, Sam Smith almost swept the general field, Kendrick Lamar won his first awards, and Sia delivered one of the most memorable Grammys performances of the 21st century. But most importantly, the 2015 ceremony was remembered for the last award presented, which would prove not only controversial but, to many people, an exemplification of certain problems with the recording academy that have only gotten worse since then. The night of the 57th Grammy Awards was defined by one big question: how did Beck beat Beyonce?
To understand Beck’s landmark win, we first have to take a short look into his previous work. Beck has been known for making eclectic yet mainstream alternative music. His debut album, the folk-driven “Golden Feelings,” didn’t receive much attention. It wasn’t until his third studio album, “Mellow Gold,” that Beck got...

Looking back, it’s amazing that we had a year like 2010 when pop icons Taylor Swift (“Fearless”), Beyoncé (“I Am … Sasha Fierce), Lady Gaga (“The Fame”), and The Black Eyed Peas (“The E.N.D.”) — defining artists in the 2000s and 2010s pop scene — were all nominated for Album of the Year. It’s definitely not a surprise given the genre-bending sounds of those albums, which influenced a whole generation of artists. But ultimately, in what could be considered a bit of an upset or a great triumph — depending on who you ask — Swift had an iconic moment, beating her fellow nominees (most infamously Beyoncé) with her record-breaking sophomore project.

It’s been four years since Lorde released her last album, “Melodrama,” but on June 10 she finally dropped a new single, “Solar Power,” and announced a new album of the same name. No release date has been announced as of this writing, but it’s already racing up in our odds for Album of the Year shortly after it was added to our predictions center. You can make or update your forecasts here.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
Lorde first made a splash when she was a teenager with her debut album “Pure Heroine” in 2013. She was 16 when it came out, and she had just turned 17 when she won two Grammys in early 2014: Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her breakthrough single “Royals.” That made her the youngest Song of the Year winner in history and one of the eight youngest winners to date in any category.

With the 2022 Grammys eligibility period more than halfway done, it’s time we take a closer look at some early contenders in the pop field. It’s the only major field without a secret nomination review committee besides alternative, so it’s typically full of big commercial hits as well as some name-checks of familiar academy favorites. Let’s dive in.

Stephen Colbert almost, finally got vindication for his long-held theory that Taylor Swift’s 2008 track “Hey Stephen” is actually about him when the singer appeared on Tuesday’s “Late Show” to talk about the release of her re-recorded album “Fearless.”
We say almost, because it was quite clear from their interview that though Swift was insisting Colbert’s assumption was all in his head, she *was* obsessed with him — or at least for the sake of this bit they were doing.
First, Colbert cut to a Sept. 14, 2009 clip of “The Colbert Report,” during which he showed himself receiving a signed copy of the original “Fearless” from Swift, signed “Love, Taylor.”
“L-o-v-e-. That means she’s my soulmate,” Colbert said at the time. “You need more proof? I hope you do! Just look at Track 4, it’s called ‘Hey Stephen.’ Alright, that’s got to be about me. How many Stephens could there be out there?...

Fresh off the re-release of her 2008 breakthrough album “Fearless,” Taylor Swift appeared on Tuesday’s episode of “The Late Show” to tell host Stephen Colbert the “secret” behind one of the record’s tracks.
Colbert said that he’s been a fan of Swift’s ever since she sent a signed CD to “The Colbert Report” in 2009. She and her family, in turn, have been fans of his even longer than that. There’s a song on “Fearless” called “Hey Stephen.” On “The Colbert Report,” Colbert said that the song was about him. Now, 12 years later on the “Late Show,” Colbert asked if his theory was correct — a question that allowed Swift to reveal the “true” identity of “Stephen.”
The sketch began with Colbert asking Swift if the song – which contains lyrics like “‘Cause I can’t help it if you look like an angel, can’t help it if...

With the Grammy eligibility period for the 2022 ceremony more than halfway done already, let’s consider which artists are looking for more than just an award. This year we saw Beyoncé break the all-time record for most Grammy wins by a female artist, Taylor Swift nab a record-breaking third Album of the Year win, and key noms and wins for Megan Thee Stallion, Roddy Ricch, and Jacob Collier. Who’s poised to break more records and make more history next year?

After his highly controversial snubs at the 2021 Grammy Awards, singer-songwriter The Weeknd expressed that he will no longer submit his music for consideration, citing the “secret panels” (probably meaning the nomination review committees) as the reason why. However, The Weeknd is far from the first artist to have beef with the Grammys. From not attending the awards to outright dissing the institution and not submitting their work, here are a few artists who also decided to declare a Grammys boycott over the years.

Taylor Swift’s Album of the Year win at the Grammys for “Folklore” was weird. Not because she wasn’t expected to — she led Gold Derby’s odds by a pretty good margin — but because Swift only won Album of the Year. And unlike the few other artists who have done this as well (Arcade Fire‘s “The Suburbs” and Mumford and Sons‘ “Babel” being the most recent examples), she lost her genre category to another Album of the Year nominee (Best Pop Album went to Dua Lipa‘s “Future Nostalgia”). This is the only time that has happened this century. So how did Swift pull off a win with relatively low support in her own genre?
Much like Swift’s last Album of the Year winner, “1989” (2016), “Folklore’s” whole narrative was built on her trying something different. This time though, instead of the country-to-pop transition she made for...

As we predicted, Taylor Swift won Album of the Year at the Grammys for “Folklore.” That was a landmark moment for the singer-songwriter and not just because it was a surprise album that shook up her radio-friendly pop formula, but because she did something only three other performers have ever done before. The Grammy for Album of the Year is one of the biggest honors for an artist. With past winners including trailblazing records like Adele’s “21,” U2’s “The Joshua Tree,” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” the award is a huge seal of approval from fellow musicians. This year eight albums are looking to join that prestigious list. Let’s take a look.
Taylor Swift is back with her eighth studio album, “Folklore.” It ended up being a departure from Swift’s more mainstream pop material into a more singer-songwriter, alt-pop vibe. Not only was it commercially successful, spending multiple weeks on top of the Billboard 200, but it became her most acclaimed piece of work, ending up with an 88 score on Metacritic and becoming a fixture on year-end lists. With all of this in mind, “Folklore” will likely be an easy win for Taylor. If so, this will be her third...

With artists like Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and The Weeknd locked out of the top general field categories at the Grammys this year, Taylor Swift is sitting pretty. She earned nominations for Album of the Year (“Folklore“) and Song of the Year (“Cardigan”), and she’s the front-runner to win both based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But that songwriting win might not be as easy for her as we think. It would be unusual when you consider it against recent Grammy history.
“Cardigan” is nominated for Song of the Year but not Record of the Year, which is awarded to the artist, producers and engineers instead of just the songwriters. And it’s tough to win Song without at least being nominated for Record. The last artist to do so was U2, who claimed Song of the Year in 2006 for “Sometimes You Can’t Make it On Your Own.

Grammy Nominations Led by Beyoncé’s Nine, With Six Apiece for Taylor Swift, Roddy Ricch and Dua Lipa
Beyoncé leads the contenders for the 2021 Grammy Awards with nine — an unexpectedly high profile, given that the superstar didn’t even release a new album during the eligibility period. Her wealth of nods is followed by six apiece for Taylor Swift, Roddy Ricch and Dua Lipa.

Ten years ago, Taylor Swift entered the Grammy record books when she won Album of the Year at the young age of 20. She prevailed for “Fearless,” her second career album after her 2006 self-titled debut album. Released by Idw Publishing, Tiananmen 1989 is written by Lun Zhang and Adrien Gombeaud and drawn by Ameziane and details the movement behind the famous 1989 image of a single protestor standing in opposition tanks in the street. This is a book packed with information, information that is both hugely important and coldly factual, giving not-so-much an emotional and moving portrait of fighting for democracy, but rather a gripping page-turner that delves into how the protests worked and how hope and desire can often by met with violence and refusal. The chinese governments attempt to erase this from its history is a worryingly real fact, so the fact that Zhang and Gombeaud approach this as a way to tell a first-hand account of the protests before the ensuing massacre is something that should be treated with a mass of respect.

Unsurprisingly, Taylor Swift‘s new album “Folklore” debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. But despite only a few hours notice before its release, it still achieved the best week for any album since, well, Swift’s last album “Lover” from last summer. And it has already skyrocketed into our top eight predicted Grammy nominees for Album of the Year.
“Folklore” achieved 846,000 album units, which are calculated by combining traditional album sales, individual track sales and on-demand streams. Of that total, 615,000 are in album sales, which is not only the biggest sales week for any album this year but also already makes it the bestselling album of 2020 — period. That’s not all, though. Its 289.85 million streams are the most for any album by a woman this year, and it sets a new record for female artists as her seventh to debut at number-one.

The second-biggest benefactor was 2010’s Speak Now, which jumped about 36 percent. Then came 2012’s Red (35 percent), 2014’s 1989 (27 percent), 2006’s Taylor Swift (21 percent), and 2017’s Reputation (19 percent...

You never know what’s going to happen when a band takes as long a break from recording new music as The Chicks did. They finally released “Gaslighter” on July 17 after delaying it because of the coronavirus pandemic, but fans have been waiting a lot longer than just a few months for this new release. It’s their first new album in 14 years, and their long absence sure made critics’ hearts grow fonder.

Amazon has thrown families a huge benefit during the coronavirus pandemic by making a lot of their children’s content (Amazon Originals and licensed shows) available for free, even for families that don’t have a Prime membership. Most of what’s there is series programming, which Amazon excels at offering. For families with Amazon Prime, however, there are definitely some family friendly movies to watch, although those are in shorter supply than the more extensive episodic programs. Many of the films that are available are classics parents will remember from their own childhoods, so if you’re trying to figure out what to watch with your kids on Amazon Prime, here are some of our suggestions on family friendly movies.

The Weeknd‘s “Blinding Lights” rose to number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart on March 30. It’s the fifth chart-topper in the R&b singer’s career, but it’s the 23rd chart-topper for one of the men behind the song: co-writer and producer Max Martin, who has helped shape pop music for more than two decades. Click above for the complete list of his number-one songs and how long they spent on top. What’s your favorite Max Martin hit?
Martin started his career in the 1980s with the band It’s Alive before transitioning to writing and producing in the ’90s when he wrote music for pop juggernauts like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and Nsync. Spears’s debut hit “Baby One More Time” was his very first Billboard chart-topper, but far from his last. He followed those collaborations by teaming up with Pink, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and many more.

Exclusive: A24’s Macbeth is just one of the many feature productions to hit pause out of safety during the coronavirus climate. The latest feature version of the William Shakespeare play, adapted and directed by Joel Coen, sans brother Ethan, was set to film here in Los Angeles.
The pic stars Denzel Washington as Macbeth with Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth, along with Brendan Gleeson as Duncan, Corey Hawkins as Macduff and The Legend of Buster Scruggs alum Harry Melling as Malcolm. It’s Joel Coen’s ninth movie with wife McDormand. Scott Rudin is also reteaming with Coen and producing Macbeth. Rudin won the Oscar for Best Picture for Coen’s No Country for Old Men.
Macbeth follows a Scottish lord who becomes convinced by a trio of witches that he is destined to become king of Scotland. With the help of his ambitious wife, he goes to extreme and violent lengths to seize the crown.
Washington is no stranger to the Bard, having played the title role in the 1990 NYC Shakespeare in the Park stage production of Richard III and the role of Brutas in the spring 2005 Broadway production of Julius Caesar which wound up reportedly doing quite financially, recouping its $3M investment back in the day. Washington also played the role of Don Pedro in Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 feature adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing which grossed over $22.5M WW.
Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard starred in the last feature version of Macbeth from director Justin Kurzel back in 2015.
Other notable Shakespeare titles at the domestic box office include Franco Zeffirelli’s 1990 Hamlet starring Mel Gibson and Glenn Close which did $20.7M and Kenneth Branagh’s 1989 Henry V which grossed $10.1M.

Taylor Swift has been named best-selling international artist of the year, according to Ifpi, the organization that represents the recorded music industry worldwide.
The pop star earned the honor for the second time, her first being in 2014 when her blockbuster '1989' came out. The honor mainly focuses on strong global sales for her seventh studio album, 'Lover,' which released in August.

Swift has been a music star for about half of her life. She was only 16 when her self-titled debut was released in 2006. That country breakthrough was certified seven-times platinum by the RIAA for its massive sales, and it earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. But it was her next album that exploded her career.
“Fearless” was released in 2008, and it earned her eight Grammy nominations. She ended up winning four of those, including Album of the Year. She was 20-years-old when she took that prize, which made her the youngest artist ever to win that award, sliding in under Alanis Morissette, who was 21 when she claimed that honor for “Jagged Little Pill” in 1996.

Taylor Swift has bowed out of a possible performance on the Grammy Awards program Sunday night just as stealthily as it appeared she might have bowed into it, multiple sources tell Variety.
Her possible appearance on the show had been kept a secret — albeit not an extremely well-kept secret — so her exit won’t create the problems that would have occurred if one of the many performers that had been announced were to have taken their leave.
Sources say that she was never formally confirmed for the show, though hopes were high that the show could nail down an appearance that was well along in talks.
Rehearsal schedules for the taping at Staples Center had included one “Tba” artist that was believed to have been reserved for Swift, possibly performing her most recent album’s feminist anthem, “The Man” … which could have taken on extra meaning, given the charges of...

Billie Eilish is the front-runner to win Best Pop Album at the Grammys, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby’s users. But is it a done deal? She’s up against arguably the biggest names in contemporary pop music: Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift (“Lover“), Beyonce (“The Lion King: The Gift”) and Ed Sheeran (“No. 6 Collaborations Project“).
On paper, that seems like a steep hill for Eilish to climb since Grande, Swift, and Sheeran have all won this category in just the last four years and Beyonce has won … well, just about everything else. She is a 23-time Grammy winner after all. The good news for Eilish, though, is that she might actually be the big fish in a small pond this year. She’s the most nominated artist in this category with six bids. And she is the only artist here who is also nominated across all four general field categories.

The 2018 Grammy nominations were a triumph for diversity, with far more hip-hop and R&b nominees in the top categories than ever before.
In a way, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that an organization devoted to supporting and honoring music would recognize the current ascendance of hip-hop as the dominant popular music form. But it is something of a delicious shock, because since they began in the 1950s, the Grammys have not exactly been inclusive.
No hip-hop song, for instance, has ever won Record of the Year or Song of the Year. You could argue that they’ve been shortsighted when it comes to rock music and Latin music and jazz and other genres, too, that there’s an inevitable conservatism that comes from having a huge body of voters considering such a vast musical landscape.
But the decades worth of snubs and oversights are not pretty. A timeline:

Yet, the issue with Un Traductor is different, as its two directors are brothers (Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso), but they're also the sons of the protagonist of the film, giving the entire enterprise a much more luminous perspective, as well as an assurance that the events will be as truthful as they can be to the...

There are some stories that are almost too unbelievable to be real, but sometimes, the best people to spin those stories are those closest to the event. Sundance Film Festival World Drama entry “Un Traductor” intriguingly finds directors Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso bringing the story of their father’s experience to life on the big screen.

The focus of Un Traductor is a little-known chapter in the history of Cuba, certainly one that went unmentioned in most obits for Fidel Castro: After the catastrophic accident at the Soviet Union's Chernobyl nuclear plant, the Caribbean nation opened its highly regarded medical facilities to many of the Russian patients suffering from radiation-related diseases.
The first feature by sibling directors Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso is a handsomely shot Cuban-Canadian production that explores this life-and-death diplomacy through one man's unlikely — and government-mandated — participation in it. Brazilian star Rodrigo Santoro (Westworld, The 33) plays Malin, a professor of Russian...
