While producer Stephen J. Cannell’s TV shows were entertaining on their own, the experience of watching was often enhanced by the shows’ theme songs, back in an era when theme songs were commonplace. For many of his shows, Cannell — like several other producers, including Dick Wolf, Steven Bochco and Donald Bellisario — turned to composer Mike Post for their themes. The work Post did for Cannell’s shows accounted for two of his three Top 10 pop hits: the theme from The Rockford Files and The Greatest American Hero (Believe It or Not). Though Cannell passed away in 2010, we enjoyed speaking to him several times, and he once described the process of working with Post on those theme songs. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Payback,” “The Only Man in the Sky” and “Barbary Coast,” the three episodes that are part of the June 3 launch of “The Boys” Season 3.
Move over Brangelina and Bennifer, there’s a new celebrity couple in town: Homelight.
The trio of “The Boys” Season 3 premiere episodes ended on the Homelight reveal, which does not bode well for Starlight (Erin Moriarty), who’s trying to take down Vought and Homelander (Antony Starr), her increasingly unhinged co-captain of the Seven. Their forced coupling-up is really just a Vought-engineered bid to increase the social media popularity of the two heroes, and thus the stock price of Vought. The announcement, complete with their couple-name hashtag, also came during the finale of “American Hero,” a fake reality show in the vein of “Drag Race” and “The Bachelor,” designed to add in new members of the Seven.

Here’s a riddle for all “The Boys” fans eagerly anticipating Friday’s drop of the third season: What’s bigger than a whale? Whatever craziness happens in the opening quarter-hour of the Season 3 premiere of the Emmy-nominated Amazon Prime Video superhero series.
“There’s something that, conservatively speaking, is a thousand times crazier than the whale. And that’s just science,” “The Boys” showrunner Eric Kripke tells Variety. “It’s in the first 15 minutes of the first episode, so we open with a real bang.”
To refresh the memories of/re-traumatize “The Boys” viewers, the third episode of Season 2, which was released as part of the premiere batch of episodes on Sept. 4, 2020, featured Butcher (Karl Urban) smashing a motorboat filled with Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon), Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) into a whale. Even before the great James Cromwell arrives at the punchline of a decrepit dirty nun joke, or the incomparable Jane Alexander gets to a vibrator bit exhausted seasons ago by Grace and Frankie, Bess Wohl’s affable, unremarkable marriage comedy Grand Horizons has its “something borrowed” locked down. Box office king Dwayne Johnson is ready to reclaim his crown.
Johnson, whose “Jumanji” just became Sony Picture’s highest grossing movie of all time, is swinging back into theaters with “Rampage.” The New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. pic, which reportedly cost $120 million to make, is estimating a debut between $37 million to $40 million from 3,950 theaters. Though that would be enough to secure the top spot from “A Quiet Place,” it’ll still need a boost from overseas to make the pricey film profitable.
Loosely based on the video game, “Rampage” follows a primatologist (Johnson) who shares a bond with a silverback gorilla that turns the gentle ape into a giant and aggressive beast after a rogue genetic experiment that goes wrong. Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, and Joe Manganiello round out the film, directed by Brad Peyton.
Still, positive word of mouth should drive Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place” to another strong weekend.

Even though we receive at least a half dozen superhero films on a yearly basis these days, the fact of the matter is that we owe a great debt to director Richard Donner and all involved in the production of Superman: The Movie back in the late 1970s. Before then, a blockbuster of that scale centered on a comic book character was simply unheard of, so to think that a genre was handily legitimized with such an effort is indeed commendable.
Taking that and other factors into consideration, the Library of Congress has chosen the movie that made us believe a man could fly to be among the 25 selected this year to be a part of the National Film Registry. And when you consider how many movies the American entertainment industry has produced over the years, that really puts it in perspective as to how much of an honor this is.

As is annual tradition, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has announced this year’s 25 film set to join the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Selected for their “cultural, historic and/or aesthetic importance,” the films picked range from such beloved actioners as “Die Hard,” childhood classic “The Goonies,” the seminal “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and the mind-bending “Memento,” with plenty of other genres and styles represented among the list.
The additions span 1905 to 2000, and includes Hollywood blockbusters, documentaries, silent movies, animation, shorts, independent, and even home movies. The 2017 selections bring the number of films in the registry to 725.
“The selection of a film to the National Film Registry recognizes its importance to American cinema and the nation’s cultural and historical heritage,” Hayden said in an official statement. “Our love affair with motion pictures is a testament to their enduring power to enlighten, inspire and...

As Sufjan Stevens reveals his unused song for I, Tonya, here’s a look back at other artists, from Bruce Springsteen to Frank Ocean, who failed to make the final cut
This week Sufjan Stevens released Tonya Harding, a five-minute tribute to the “shining American star”, as he sings in the song, that the songwriter says he’d been trying to write for over 20 years. In composing the song, Stevens says he felt a “conviction to write something with dignity and grace, to pull back the ridiculous tabloid fodder and take stock of the real story of this strange and magnificent American hero”.

Following his Sept. 27 death, Hugh Hefner is being honored on the front cover of the publication he founded.
The cover of Playboy‘s November/December 2017 issue shows a side profile of Hefner, who was photographed by Larry Gordon back in 1965. The late publisher, who was born in 1926, was 39-years-old in the portrait.
The cover makes the late publisher the 11th man to ever be on the cover of the magazine and the first man ever to be on the cover without a female model present.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are teaming up for another film project together. They will be making a drama about Teddy Roosevelt. Dicaprio will talk on the lead role and Scorsese will direct. Deadline offers the following breakdown of Roosevelt's life and what made DiCaprio want to get back involved with the project.
Roosevelt had an eventful life filled with military exploits, and a political track where he moved from New York Governor to vice president to become at 42 the youngest president when President William Mckinley was assassinated in 1901. His most enduring achievements though came in the area of conservation, including his work around reserves, preserves, national parks and forests. That is of particular interest for DiCaprio and why he is resurrecting playing the subject after a previous attempt at the film years ago didn’t pan out.

Sam Shepard was a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright whose contributions to the theater world spanned decades; by the time he started acting in movies, his career had already taken off. As such, even as he landed an Oscar nomination for “The Right Stuff” and continued to be a regular presence in front of the camera, the multi-talented writer-performer remained primarily associated with the stage. Nevertheless, Shepard remained a major figure in American cinema for 40 years in more ways that one: It’s his tender screenplay that makes Wim Wenders’ “Paris, Texas” such an emotional powerhouse, and he even directed two features, but it’s Shepard’s acting credits speak to his astonishing range — and the way he continued to evolve his skills as the decades wore on. Here are five standouts from a career so rich with talent that we can only begin to explore it with this limited sampling (sorry,...

Social media’s reaction to John McCain this week has been a rollercoaster.
He’s up (his rousing speech in the Senate after brain cancer diagnosis); he’s down (he casts deciding vote to open debate on repealing Obamacare); he’s up again (he breaks from his party to cast deciding vote against the “skinny repeal.”)
Or all that in reverse, depending on the political perspective.
After the 80-year-old Arizona senator’s latest act – his maverick “no” vote that meant a 51-49 defeat for President Donald Trump‘s latest push to repeal the Affordable Care Act – has him ending the week on a high note,...
