"The Beverly Hillbillies" is the platonic ideal of a high-concept sitcom hook. At its essence, it's simply "Poor folks get stinking rich and move to Beverly Hills." That's probably all CBS needed to hear from creator Paul Henning, who, between 1962 and 1971, exploited this simple premise to the tune of nine seasons and 274 episodes. During this span, "The Beverly Hillbillies" was one of the top-rated shows on TV.
How could such a simple premise, which was never really tweaked, sustain a series for nearly a decade? This question perpetually flummoxed the nation's TV critics, who generally loathed the show, but anyone who gorged on "The Beverly Hillbillies" throughout their formative couch potato years (during its initial run or via syndication) knows the answer is obvious: it's the cast, stupid.
Buddy Ebsen was perfect casting as Jed Clampett, a gentleman of the Ozarks who accidentally discovers oil on his Missouri mountain land...

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Trailer Looks Like a Direct Remake of the 2008 Home Invasion Horror Movie
The first installment in a brand new reboot trilogy from Lionsgate and director Renny Harlin, The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be available in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is said to be something of a remake of the original 2008 movie, while its sequels – Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 – will blaze a new path from there.
Our hope is that the two subsequent movies will allow Renny Harlin to get crazy and inject a little more of his personal filmmaking style into the proceedings, because The Strangers: Chapter 1 indeed does look to be a pretty straight up remake of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion classic. This first trailer essentially goes through all the familiar beats, ending with a new/lesser version of the most iconic line from Bertino’s movie. “Because you were home” has been replaced with “Because you’re here,” which doesn’t quite have the same punch to it.

Songs about the working class are woven throughout the fabric of country music. Unfortunately, some of the more recent ones do nothing more than pander to an already marginalized demographic. Thank goodness for Elvie Shane, then. The Kentucky songwriter’s new single “Forgotten Man” cuts through the buzzword bullshit of freedom, cold ones, and American dreams to get right to the heart of what it means to be blue-collar in 2023.
“Gas is getting too damn high and land is too/Can’t get your hands on an acre that ain’t handed down to you,...

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), Hong Chau (“The Whale”), Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), and Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). Our odds currently indicate that Bassett (18/5) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Condon (37/10), Curtis (19/5), Hsu (9/2), and Chau (9/2).
For the first time since 2012, all five of the women in this lineup are new to the category. The last instance involved winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help”) and nominees Bérénice Bejo (“The Artist”), Jessica Chastain (“The Help”), Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”), and Janet McTeer (“Albert Nobbs”). The current group’s complete Oscars newcomer rate of 80% has become common in recent years, with the same percentage also having applied to the nominees of 2022, 2018, and 2016.

The Cadillac Three are known for hard-hitting Southern rock and country-funk — “country fuzz,” the trio calls it — but members Jaren Johnston and Neil Mason are looking outside of that box for their new record label. On Thursday, Johnston and Mason announced War Buddha Records, a partnership with Warner Records, and their first signed artist: Rett Madison, a West Virginia singer-songwriter now living and working out of Los Angeles.
Madison, who released the album Pin-Up Daddy in 2021 and recently finished a tour with St. Paul and the Broken Bones, is no stranger to Rolling Stone.

After the humiliating back-to-back scandal of #OscarsSoWhite for the 2014 and 2015 Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences set itself to aggressively increasing representation within its membership. By expanding the perspectives of its voters, the hope was that a greater diversity of voices could find recognition at the Oscars.
Five years later at the 93rd Oscars, several major milestones were indeed achieved for representation. Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”), winner for best supporting actress, was the first Korean actor to ever win an Oscar, and only the second Asian woman. Chloé Zhao was the second woman ever to win best director, and the first woman of color. Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson were the first Black women to win makeup and hairstyling. And with Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) winning best supporting actor, half the acting winners were people of color.

Yuh-Jung Youn has made Oscars history as the first Korean performer to win an Academy Award in one of the four acting categories. Youn took home the Best Supporting Actress prize for her performance in Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari.” Young was nominated against Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Movie Film”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”), and Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”). Prior to the Oscars, Youn emerged as the category’s frontrunner after winning Best Supporting Actress prizes at the BAFTA Film Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Youn’s Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actress came from one of six Oscar nominations “Minari” received at the 93rd Academy Awards. The film also picked up nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Steven Yeun, Best Original Score, and Best Original Screenplay. That was a bit of a long engagement wasn’t it? In most years, the Oscars are a distant memory by mid-March, but here we are approaching the end of April, and only now are we learning who the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences really think is the best.
Oscars 2021 are done, and with them we realize the strange year that was 2020 is perhaps finally in the rearview. Still, it doesn’t mean that year will leave without a few bitter surprises. Likely more than a few folks were disappointed by the shocking final moment of the night when Anthony Hopkins upset the late Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor category. Unusually, the award was even presented as the final of the evening, and we’ve unpacked some of the implications of that here.
However, it should be said Hopkins is devastating in The Father, and there are...

Many critics roll their eyes at Oscar season, and when it runs all the way through April — an anomaly this time — who can blame them? With the same crop of movies dissected ad infinitum for eight months and counting, the conversations about the “state of the race” often eclipse ones about cinematic quality. Thankfully, many of this year’s top contenders for the gold also happen to be critical favorites. If the 30 critics who voted in this year’s edition of our annual Oscar critics poll had their way, many of the expected outcomes on Sunday’s show would remain the same.
However, the results for Best Picture also cast doubt on the very idea of anointing a single winner as the very best movie of 2020. The top vote-getters in that category resulted in a tie, with official frontrunner “Nomadland” splitting the prize with “Minari.” Both movies are quiet, lyrical...

Rudy Giuliani wins Worst Supporting Actor for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” Sia’s “Music” snags three awards
Here’s a vote that actually went Mike Lindell’s way — the MyPillow CEO has topped this year’s Razzies by winning Worst Actor and Worst Picture.
Lindell and his voter-fraud-pushing film “Absolute Proof” beat out a field that included “Dolittle” with Robert Downey Jr., “Fantasy Island” and Sia’s “Music” for the title of the worst movie of the year at this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies).
Lindell also won the title of Worst Actor for portraying himself in his conspiratorial film that pushed false and debunked claims that the 2020 election was rigged and flipped against Donald Trump. The Razzies voting body in a release called “Absolute Proof” a “faux documentary” and a “two-hour, fake news snooze-fest.”

Here in the final stages of the 2021 Oscars season, several Academy Awards voters told Gold Derby who they voted for — and why. They asked us not to reveal their identities, but they were otherwise eager to share their views of the year’s best films. Now that voting has concluded, we’ll share a few with you. The comments below by Voter #6 for each category are part of the thought process in choosing these potential winners.
Best Picture: “The Trial of the Chicago 7”
If there was a write-in ballot, I would put “Ma Rainey.” My choice instead is kind of the studio picture of the year. Many of the other films are great but remind me more of independent films. My tastes in rewarding films tend to go with ones that can please a large number of audience members. This film has the scope and size even though it...

The race for makeup and hair is particularly noteworthy this season. It includes transforming Viola Davis into the pioneering blues singer of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” turning Glenn Close into the fiery Appalachian grandmother of “Hillbilly Elegy,” adding floral flourishes to Anya Taylor-Joy’s titular matchmaker in “Emma,” meticulously recreating Hollywood’s Golden Age in black-and-white in “Mank,” and creating a unique wooden look to the titular puppet of “Pinocchio.”
But with the Academy tilting toward transforming real-life people in recent years, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” is the favorite, especially after its sweep of the coveted Muahs Guild Awards. Plus, Davis is the favorite in the Best Actress race. She landed her fourth Oscar nomination — the most of any Black actress — as the sexy, subversive Rainey. And the actress was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude with the help of gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair. She tapped her personal makeup stylist,...

There was never any suspicion that Chloé Zhao would not win the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Achievement for Direction of a Theatrical Feature Film for “Nomadland.” The Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and PGA winning film headed to this weekend’s BAFTA Awards with seven chances to win again, followed by Oscar voting from April 15-20. Zhao is the second woman to win the DGA award (after Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker”) and the first Asian woman.
When the movie did not land a SAG Ensemble nomination (given its cast of non-pros), that opened the way for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” to win that award, but the PGA and DGA wins for “Nomadland” give it a clear lead in the race for Best Picture and Director. Overwhelmingly, the DGA winner wins the Best Director Oscar. Only eight times in 72 years has that not happened.

The unconventional 74th BAFTAs held its first of two ceremonies tonight, with eight awards handed out in the craft categories, plus the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema prize. Scroll down for the list of winners. The main awards take place tomorrow (April 11).
Host Clara Amfo opened proceedings by paying tribute to the late Prince Philip, who died yesterday at the age of 99. The Duke of Edinburgh was BAFTA’s first president 60 years ago, beginning a line of Royal patronage which continues with his son Prince William, who had been scheduled to make an appearance during the awards tonight and tomorrow but has pulled out after yesterday’s news.
Rocks was the first winner this eve, with Lucy Pardee scooping the award for Casting. The UK indie movie was nominated for a leading seven BAFTAs this year, joint most with Nomadland, which is a hot favorite for the Best Film prize tomorrow.

Yuh-Jung Youn made history at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress for her performance as the scene-stealing grandmother Soon-ja in “Minari.” This made Youn the first Asian actor of any gender to win an individual SAG Award for film, and now it launches her to frontrunner status at the Academy Awards. Should she win the Oscar, the legendary Korean actress would become only the second Asian woman to win an Oscar for acting, following Miyoshi Umeki for “Sayonara” (1957), and only the sixth person in history to win for a performance spoken primarily in a non-English language.
The first three actors to pull off an Oscar win for non-English performances — Sophia Loren for “Two Women” (1961), Robert De Niro for “The Godfather Part II” (1974) and Roberto Benigni for “Life Is Beautiful” (1998) — all primarily spoke Italian in their respective films. The SAG Awards have previewed nine of the last 10 Supporting Actress Oscar winners. And since the guild started giving out prizes in 1995, it has foreseen 69% of the eventual Oscar champs in this category. The nominees are often just as similarly aligned.
The 2021 SAG nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”), and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”). Our odds currently have Close (37/10) favored to win the award, followed in order by Colman (39/10), Youn (39/10), Bakalova (4/1), and Zengel (9/2).
Close and Colman are the only previous SAG nominees. The two of them vied for the Best Actress award in 2019, with Close (“The Wife”) emerging victorious over Colman (“The Favourite”). Colman is a triple nominee this year, having also earned individual and ensemble bids for her work on the season 4 of the drama series “The Crown.” She shared in...

Among this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Supporting Actress is Glenn Close for her performance in “Hillbilly Elegy.” She has previously been nominated seven times before, but still has yet to win, making her the actress with the most losses and no victories in Oscar history. So will the eighth nomination be the charm for her?

Mila Kunis and Glenn Close Seek Four Good Days in First Trailer for Rodrigo García’s Addiction Drama
In the midst of an awards season run playing a mother trying to save her daughter from drug addiction in Hillbilly Elegy, Glenn Close traversed similar territory in a film that premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and will finally now arrive.
Four Good Days, directed by previous Close collaborator Rodrigo García (Albert Nobbs), stars the eight-time Oscar nominee as Deb, the mom of Mila Kunis’ Molly who is in the throes of addiction. When a substance abuse treatment requires Molly to be four days clean, Deb must do everything in her power to keep Molly drug-free while working on their broken relationship. Based on a Washington Post article by Eli Saslow, who co-wrote the film with Garcia, the first trailer has landed ahead of a spring release.

Best Supporting Actress was the most wild of this year’s Oscar acting races in Phase 1, and though the nominations turned out to be predictable — the five were our top five — the question of who will win remains unpredictable and might stay that way until April 25. While the male categories seem locked and loaded and Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”) has a healthy lead in Best Actress, there is no such consensus in supporting actress. Each nominee has at least one Expert predicting her to win, which you cannot say about the other three categories. The prospect of the Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA going to different people is very much on the table, setting us up for a Marcia Gay Harden-esque grand finale. So where do we stand now post-nominations?
Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”)
Youn is currently in first place, backed by seven Experts and seven editors for the win.

As we head toward the Oscars, Netflix is trying to win a few of its 35 nominations. The streamer boasts two Supporting Actress contenders in a wide open category that does not include Globe winner Jodie Foster (“The Mauritanian”).
Signaling possible weakness for David Fincher’s “Mank,” Oscar newbie Amanda Seyfried did not land a SAG spot for her role as Marion Davies opposite Charles Dance as partner William Randolph Hearst in David Fincher’s “Mank” (Netflix), but she could win here. Long overdue Glenn Close (seven nominations) could finally score as Mawmaw, an Appalachian living in Ohio in Ron Howard’s controversial “Hillbilly Elegy.” Close will vie against past rival, Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) as a daughter tangling with octogenarian Anthony Hopkins in Sundance drama “The Father” (Sony Pictures Classics), who landed Globes, Critics Choice, and SAG nominations.

When the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced Monday, March 15, “Mank” came out on top with a leading 10 bids. But does size really matter considering last year’s nom leader “Joker,” which had 11 bids, still couldn’t beat six-time contender “Parasite” for Best Picture? Although “Mank”‘s haul is impressive, it is missed key nominations for Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay, which could hamper its chances to win the top prize.
Following “Mank” on the list of the most-nominated films are a half dozen six-time nominees: “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Right behind are “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Promising Young Woman” with five apiece and “News of the World” with four.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Oscars, through Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. AMPAS’s David Rubin started the pandemic-delayed Oscars by validating Deadline’s scoop that most of the event will be held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some of the event being held in the Dolby Theatre, its usual locale.
The nominations for the Oscars, which will hold its ceremony April 25 live on ABC, had its share of surprises, and the most noticeable thing is the diversity that is reflected in the Academy’s efforts over several years to broaden the perspective of its voting members. Coming off the recent scandalous showing by the scandal-mocked HFPA for not even having a single voting Black member, it seems a step in the right direction.

As we await the Academy Award nominations, the Golden Raspberry Awards have chimed in with their own set of nominees. The Razzies, as they’re known, supposedly celebrate the worst in cinema each year. Of course, they rarely actually cite anything more than the easy targets, so the 41st ceremony is going to be more of the same. Personally, I think things like this are wholly unnecessary, trafficking in negativity and snark. However, people get a kick out of them, so we’re sharing, nonetheless. So, take a look and then basically pay them no mind afterwards… Here are the Razzie nominees: Worst Picture 365 Days Absolute Proof Dolittle Fantasy Island Music Worst Actor Robert Downey Jr. – Dolittle Mike Lindell (The “My Pillow” Guy) – Absolute Proof Michele Morrone – 365 Days Adam Sandler – Hubie Halloween David Spade – The Wrong Missy Worst Actress Anne Hathaway – The Last Thing He Wanted & The Witches...

The Razzie Awards nominations for 2020 are here, recognizing the worst movies in a year that the Razzies acknowledge “sucked big time.” Robert Downey Jr. in “Dolittle” and Mike Lindell (aka the MyPillow guy) both landed Worst Actor nominations.
Downey Jr.’s “Dolittle” led all movies with six nominations, including Worst Picture. Lindell picked up a nod for his election conspiracy film “Absolute Proof,” which Oann aired — but only with a disclaimer that the details in the movie should be taken as opinions, not facts.
“Dolittle” was tied for the most nominations with the mafia film “365 Days,” which was also nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Michele Morrone) and Worst Actress (Anna-Maria Sieklucka).
Some other low lights of the Razzie nominations include perennial contender Adam Sandler, who was nominated for Worst Actor for “Hubie Halloween” and Worst Screen Combo for himself and “His Grating Simpleton Voice.”

Yuh-Jung Youn is a history-maker with her Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination in Best Supporting Actress for “Minari.” She is the first Korean actress to earn an individual acting nomination in SAG Awards history thanks to her standout turn as Soon-ja, the blunt grandmother of a Korean-American family living in 1980s Arkansas. The SAG bid comes after dozens of critics groups have lauded Youn with Best Supporting Actress wins. Could the legendary Korean actress translate that passion into a victory here?

It’s not an election year, but March 9 was Super Tuesday because we got nominations from BAFTA and the Directors Guild of America Awards, just a day after the Producers Guild of America Awards unveiled its top 10 and two days after the Critics Choice Awards handed out trophies. Phew. And in the end, they gave us some clarity but also more chaos. Our editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to make sense of what they all mean in the Oscar race. Watch our predictions slugfest above.
If you haven’t been following closely, the BAFTA nominations might seem totally cray-cray to you. Where are Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”) and Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom“), you ask? What about Olivia Colman (“The Father”) and Gary Oldman (“Mank”)? We explain the BAFTAs’ new voting system, instituted after last year’s slate of all-white acting nominees and all-male directing nominees.

Awards experts and aficionados hoping to receive some clarity on this chaotic and extended Oscar season were done no favors by the BAFTA Awards this year. Maria Bakalova took home the Best Supporting Actress prize at Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” which was great for her and also great for us because that means the unruly supporting actress Oscar race is still the one to watch. This was a good get for Bakalova in the middle of Oscar voting after she surprisingly lost the Golden Globe last week in the lead category. History would tell you that she’s almost assured an Oscar nomination, but with how wacky the race is this year, nothing is guaranteed.

This time she’s competing in Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Mamaw in “Hillbilly Elegy.” While critics mostly savaged the film upon its release in November, many of them cited Close’s performances as one of the film’s redeeming qualities. Even the Critics Choice Awards nominated her in Best Supporting Actress despite the film’s 25 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
The actress came, well, close to winning two years ago for “The Wife,” picking up precursor prizes at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards before stunningly losing the Oscar. She won’t replicate that path this year despite getting nominations at these places for “Hillbilly Elegy” as she lost the Golden Globe to former Oscar rival Jodie Foster. But the race is still young and there’s...

After a week that exposed the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s own lack of diversity within its membership, the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place from both coasts on Feb. 28.
Although hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler addressed this controversy in their opening monologue and a trio of members of the HFPA took the stage to acknowledge their need to do better within the first half hour of the show, surprisingly few winners used their acceptance speech time as opportunity to discuss what their win meant in this larger context.
Instead, they chose to celebrate their fellow creatives — both the other nominees in their categories, as well as their cast and crew members with whom they worked and who helped make the win possible.
The three-hour broadcast pretty much went similarly uneventfully, with mostly expected winners actually being the ones to take the trophies, especially on the television side.

The awards for 2020 cinema aren't done yet! First things first the British Independent Film Awards were held so we've updated that post to reflect their winners. Rocks was the big winner with five wins but The Father far behind it in nomination totals, won three.
Now here are five more new sets of critics groups from Nevada, Utah, Seattle, Dallas Ft Worth, DC. There are no new names or titles winning except for Nevada honoring Glenn Close for Hillbilly Elegy and The Father in Screenplay and Seattle's choice of Documentary (The History of the Seattle Mariners: Supercut Edition). Utah goes slightly off consensus preferring both Minari and One Night in Miami to Nomadland in the top Picture/Director categories. Utah also has two unusual choices in runners up positions like Lukasz Zal for cinematography and Cristin Milioti for Palm Springs for a genre performance category. We'd congratulate...
