“All in the Family” and “One Day at a Time” producer Norman Lear will become the third person to receive the Golden Globes’ annual lifetime achievement award for television, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Thursday.
The Carol Burnett Award, named for the TV star honored with the award in 2019, recognizes “outstanding contributions to the television medium on or off the screen” and is the TV counterpart to the longstanding Cecil B. deMille Award for film.
Lear follows Burnett and daytime TV host Ellen DeGeneres in receiving the trophy.
“Norman Lear is among the most prolific creators of this generation,” HFPA president Ali Sar said in a statement. “His career has encompassed both the Golden Age and Streaming Era, throughout which his progressive approach addressing controversial topics through humor prompted a cultural shift that allowed social and political issues to be reflected in television. Only a few days short of January’s end, 2021 has seen the loss of its first Oscar winner. Here’s how the Associated Press broke the news:
Cloris Leachman, an Oscar-winner for her portrayal of a lonely housewife in “The Last Picture Show” and a comedic delight as the fearsome Frau Blücher in “Young Frankenstein” and self-absorbed neighbor Phyllis on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” has died. She was 94.
Leachman died in her sleep of natural causes at her home in Encinitas, California, publicist Monique Moss said Wednesday. Her daughter Dinah Englund was at her side, Moss said.
Remarkably those 94 years encompassed nine decades of work on the big and small(er) screen. A truly versatile actress, her knack for comedy wasn’t really showcased until nearly twenty years into her astounding career. As a tribute we offer a fond look back at the work of a true cinema “scene-stealer...

Frederick Wiseman’s latest film, the four-and-a-half-hour documentary on Boston’s City Hall, finds him embraced by the city he calls home (when not editing in Paris) and given free rein to various departments. City Hall recently aired on PBS and is currently streaming on the organization’s website, marking a poetic full circle from Wiseman’s debut film, the Boston-set Titicut Follies, which spent more than two decades in censorship following a brief theatrical run.
When we talked to Wiseman, who has been stuck in Paris since editing City Hall due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he had just received his first dose of the vaccine. The conversation gave us a chance to discuss his latest film, his body of work finding new audiences via Kanopy, and what’s next for the 91-year-old.
The Film Stage: Congratulations on getting the vaccine shot.

“[Bille Holiday] was such an avant-garde [figure], so it was trying to pull things that seemed new. There are so many pictures of her, it’s wild. She has so many looks within all these different times, so I just went towards images that drew me in, and stayed on the line of the year that we were working in. There would be times where we were coming directly from a moment, and matching to a moment in time, and then there were moments where we could take liberty. And that was where I got to create more.” — Paolo Nieddu

For decades, the name “Tommy Lasorda” has been synonymous with not just The Dodgers, but also with Los Angeles. Fittingly, it seemed like the whole town took to Twitter to pay tribute to the Hall of Fame manager who guided the Dodgers to two World Championships.
Among the L.A. icons who remembered Lasorda were Magic Johnson, Billy Crystal, Mayor Eric Garcetti, the Lakers, the Rams, USC Trojans Athletics, the L.A.P.D, the chief of the L.A.F.D. and the great Vin Scully.
The Dodgers organization itself posted a lengthy statement that recognized Lasorda’s seventy-one seasons affiliated with the club, as well as his status as one of baseball’s most popular ambassadors.

Paul Westphal, a Hall of Fame basketball player who starred for USC and later in the NBA, died Saturday from complications of brain cancer. He was 70.
NBA teams honored Westphal with moments of silence before Saturday night’s games. NBA commissioner Adam Silver called him, “One of the great all-around players of his era.”
Born on Nov. 30, 1950, in Torrance, Calif., Westphal surprised many by choosing USC over UCLA, which was in its heyday of national championships under the purview of legendary coach John Wooden.
Westphal led the Trojans to a 24-2 record and a No. 5 ranking as a junior, its only two losses to UCLA. He was recognized as an All-American as a junior and senior before he was selected 10th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1972 NBA draft.
His NBA career was equally successful. He won an NBA championship in 1974 with Boston. After the1975 season, he was traded to Phoenix,...

Whether a viewer in 1896 or 2020, cinema has always been a dynamic and variable experience. Cinema as an event—as a manifestation of a meeting point between the art of moving images and an audience, big or small—has never fit any one definition, and this last year, so severely disrupted by a global pandemic, has deeply underscored the versatility and resilience of our great love. Our viewing this year, like that of so many, has been strange: compromised, confrontational, escapist, euphoric, painful, revelatory—encompassing all of the reactions one can have to film. How we encountered our favorite movies and most meaningful cinematic experiences of the year was hardly new: A by-now-normal mix of festivals, theatres, various subscription and transactional streaming services, as well as private screener links and gems buried on over-stuffed hard drives. But for most of the year, the communal experience shrunk to living rooms and glowing screens.

Anthony Michael Hall is heading back to high school, starring as the assistant principal and executive producing the independent drama “The Class,” Variety has learned exclusively..
Hall broke out as high school brainiac Brian Johnson in the 1985 classic “The Breakfast Club,” which focused on five students serving high school detention on a Saturday. “The Class” involves a diverse group of six high school seniors forced to show up on a Saturday to retake an exam they either failed or missed in order to graduate.
The students are challenged by their acting teacher to create their own characters and must bring their own personal experiences into an emotional space of improvisation in front of classmates they do not know. Faced with their cultural differences, prejudices and hidden fears, they are confronted to break through their own walls and establish truths when they are unprepared to deal with themselves emotionally.

Earlier this year Renee Zellweger won her second Oscar: Best Actress for playing troubled singer and actress Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy.” But soon she may win another industry award that’s just as meaningful, if not more: a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Album. As Billboard’s Paul Grein points out, Zellweger would be the first since Jennifer Hudson in “Dreamgirls” to receive a Grammy nomination for the film they won an acting Oscar for.
Seea new wave of Grammy campaigns: 3 ways the Covid-19 pandemic could affect the race
It’s all the more special given Garland’s own awards history. The legendary entertainer never won a competitive Oscar, though she did receive an honorary Juvenile Award for her work in film the year she appeared in “The Wizard of Oz.” So Zellweger’s victory at the Oscars was also a way for the academy to symbolically give Garland an overdue hug.

During a Miami town hall on Thursday night, a woman seated behind Trump captured as much if not more attention than the president himself.

Executives at NBCUniversal, NBC News and the NBC broadcast network are not-so-quietly thanking an employee who has only limited command over the Comcast-owned company’s corporate direction: Savannah Guthrie.
Guthrie’s handling of President Donald Trump during a town-hall broadcast organized in last-minute fashion by NBC News helped blunt waves of criticism of the media conglomerate, which scheduled the event directly opposite one with Joe Biden, Trump’s Democratic challenger, on ABC News. “Perhaps the execs at NBC — or Guthrie herself — realized how disciplined they would need to be to justify giving airtime to Trump after he violated even more democratic norms by rejecting the rules of the Commission on Presidential Debates,” says Dannagal Young, an associate professor at the University of Delaware who studies political media.

As reactions pour in to tonight’s dueling Town Hall debates, most opinions seemed firmly fixed on one side of the aisle or another.
While that’s not unexpected, it does point out that few minds were changed by the television shows, which increasingly fail to resemble showcases of well-reasoned critical thinking, and instead seem like bowling alleys, with the candidates the pins.
Some of the online Town Hall reactions;

Donald Trump may have been twirling like a rabid squirrel over on NBC, but on the unique night in America’s challenged democracy, Joe Biden’s town hall on ABC was a display of a candidate in control of himself, the facts, the Constitution, and plans for the future.
As George Stephanopoulos wrapped up the night, he asked Biden about a moment at the NBC event, when Trump declined to say whether he took a Covid-19 test before the first presidential debate last month. Having seen the second Potus debate tossed, the Democrat was also asked if he expected the final debate next week to actually occur.
“It’s just decency,” Biden responded, asserting that his coronavirus concerns were less about himself but more “the camera guys” and “the Secret Service.” He also was 100% crystal that he expected to “be there” in Nashville next week.

Writer and actress Sarah Megan Thomas had always been interested in World War II and spies. She had been wanting to tell a female spy story and heard about Winston Churchill’s female spies.
Diving in, Thomas found herself in a rabbit hole reading up on the secret British World War II organization, The Special Operations Executive (Soe), Thomas found herself writing about the unheard female heroes who gathered intel and created espionage in France.

Update, 2:39 Pm: Joe Biden is leading in the polls against Donald Trump and it looks like the former Vice-President has topped the ratings obsessed ex-Celebrity Apprentice host on the small screen too.
Live from Miami in front of a masked and social distanced crowd, NBC Nightly News’ Decision 2020 Town Hall with Biden is the most watched political event in the arena format this campaign, according to Nielsen.
Simulcast across NBC, MSNBC and CNBC and hosted by Lester Holt, the one-hour town call averaged 6.7 million viewers. That’s a big reach that resulted in a 68% leap over the viewership for Trump’s September 15 town hall on ABC. Up against the NFL on CBS and ESPN, plus Dancing With The Stars on ABC, Biden’s primetime stint on the Comcast-owned outlets was a 97% improvement over the viewership for the ex-vp’s CNN town hall on September 17.

Walt Disney Television has renewed the nationally syndicated daytime talk show Tamron Hall for a third season. Hall is expected to announce the pickup at her show this morning.
Getting to a third season is a major milestone very few syndicated daily talk shows have been able to achieve over the past decade. While many high-profile daytime talkers launch with two-year station group deals, which gives them two years on the air, going beyond that has proven a daunting task. The last show to accomplish it was Steve Harvey six years ago.
Walt Disney TV already has cleared Tamron Hall for its third season (2021-22) on ABC Owned Television Stations Group. The ABC O&Os have been the show’s core station group, which helped launch it last fall. That includes Wabc-tv New York, Kabc-tv Los Angeles, Wpvi-tv Philadelphia, Kgo-tv San Francisco, Ktrk-tv Houston, Wtvd-tv Raleigh-Durham, and Kfsn-tv Fresno.

Big Sean has a cure for what’s ailing the world. In fact, Sean hawks so many cures on his latest album that it’s hard to keep track. The first one resides on the opening bar of “Why Would I Stop?” when he proclaims: “This shit the antidote, this the ‘cure cancer’ flow/Stop a pandemic and the globe.” As of the time of publication for this post, cancer and the global pandemic are still raging, despite the arrival of Sean’s new flow, but he nevertheless makes his point.

‘Shazam!’: Zachary Levi And Cast Reveal Title Of Sequel, Remain Tight-Lipped On Details – DC FanDome
After becoming a hit with audiences and a box office success, fanboys and fangirls were thirsty for more of Shazam! with the titular wisecracking teen-who-turns-into-a-grown-adult superhero played Zachary Levi. Warner Bros recognized this and almost immediately set a sequel with screenwriter Henry Gayden and director David F. Sandberg returning. Levi took the virtual dais in the Hall of Heroes to give us some details about the forthcoming sequel — even though he couldn’t share much. In fact, he couldn’t share anything at all except for the new title: Fury of the Gods.
Levi was, at first, alone on screen, but one by one, cast members including Asher Angel, Meagan Good, Jack Dylan Grazer, Faithe Herman, Adam Brody, director David F. Sandberg and Sinbad (who many thought was in the first film) popped up on the screen to talk about how much they couldn’t talk about the movie except for the new title,...

Fans hoping for major DC news in lieu of an actual San Diego Comic-Con are definitely going to get just that at DC FanDome, a digital event designed to be watched at home like a real con.
Originally set up as one epic night of panels and reveals, DC announced that it will be splitting FanDome into two separate and distinct events: Hall of Heroes, which will be held in late August, and WatchVerse in mid-September.
The August date still holds most of the big-ticket items. It’s billed by DC as “an epic world designed personally by Jim Lee featuring special programming, panels and exclusive reveals from a wide variety of films, TV series, games, comics and more.” Functionally, it’s the Hall H of FanDome.
This DC FanDome trailer gives fans a good glimpse at what they can expect from the event:
