One persons Falburn Academy is another persons Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Ah, well. Five stars for Patricia Clarkson in a performance perhaps a little too complex for what the role demands. Subtract two stars for a rushed and too-pat ending. but add one for attempting an homage to Argentos Suspira. Not for Saw fans.

Any movie on a double-bill with Windcroft, as this one was, would tower in comparison. Even so, there is something inherently haunting about this film -- not the acting nor even the story so much as the building itself and the glimpses of its few remaining tenants. There could have been a much better movie here, but this is a capable programmer.

No need to worry about spoilers here -- paint drying comes to mind. To be clear: nothing happens for 90 minutes, then something happens, and then the movie's over. Feel free to check my math, but don't say you weren't warned. The only reason I'm giving this one star is because I was born in Pennsylvania (and I couldn't publish this review without one).

Votes: 92,199 | Gross: $21.37M

Forget the negative reviews -- here and from the people who get paid to review movies. This is actually a nifty little Saturday afternoon sci-fi film. But there is a catch: you MUST STOP WATCHING 15 minutes before the end of the picture... really, trust me, just stop, no good can come from seeing the cheesy ending. If you insist on watching it, don't say you weren't warned. Other than that -- good effects (L.A., once again, in big trouble), some believable suspense and truly tense situations, interesting set-up, and tolerable acting (but, admit it, acting isn't really why you watch a movie like this, is it?)

Votes: 12,888

Lets be perfectly clear: This movie is dreadful. Awful. From the collagen in Brooke Burns lips to the 666-Call-Me late night escorts draped from Shane Van Dykes arms... terrible. If you can accept the souvenir-laden, back-pack toting, tank top/flip-flop & shorts tourist crowd that frequents the Queen Mary as the lucky passengers of the inaugural voyage of the T2, then youll probably accept the Queen Mary as a stand in for the doomed (again), steaming from her berth in Long Beach past the Statue of Liberty in 5 minutes flat. Final warning: this is not THAT KIND of bad movie. It really is just one monstrous waste of time. Dont be fooled by the single star rating -- they make you give at least one.

There are films that, no matter the gaps in plausibility (and The Grey has a few), stays with you, even haunts you. The Grey is such a movie. There is a vastness to it, both in metaphysic and geographic landscape, that is humbling. It asks big questions that can't be answered by the film or the viewer. As an adventure movie, it has everything going for it -- stunning scenery, implacable nature, determined characters. But it is no "Never Cry Wolf"... this is grim and harrowing and you should be prepared. Whether you will be rewarded for your patience is entirely a personal matter, I think. But whether you're left pensive or throwing the remote at the screen, this is not a movie that will leave you indifferent.

Tight film. Low on gore, high on tension. Much, much better than some of the critics and nay-sayers portray it as being. If you're put off by its association with M. Night Shyamalan, rest assured it hasn't been ruined by his heavy handling. Even if you've read the spoilers, it still packs a punch with some of the best cinematography ever seen in a low budget film. Recommended for those of us who are still somewhat afraid of the dark and sick of splatter film pretending to be horror.

R | 100 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

49 Metascore

A group of students go to the location of the infamous Dyatlov pass incident to make a documentary, but things take a turn for the worse as the secret of what happened there is revealed.

Director: Renny Harlin | Stars: Holly Goss, Matt Stokoe, Luke Albright, Ryan Hawley

Votes: 27,681

Oh...what happened to Renny Harlin? The real Dyatlov Pass incident is dripping with material, pregnant with possibilities and Harlin can only come up with this derivative nonsense? Is this the same director who did Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea? A let down. 'Course, like our intrepid student documentary makers, I didn't let a few bad reviews stop me from watching it, just proceed with caution and the understanding that you will never get this two hours back.

71. Dream House (2011)

PG-13 | 92 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

35 Metascore

Soon after moving into their seemingly idyllic new home, a family learns of a brutal crime committed against former residents of the dwelling.

Director: Jim Sheridan | Stars: Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Elias Koteas

Votes: 69,156 | Gross: $21.28M

I'm usually pretty good about sussing things out, knowing where the trap doors are, but I admit that I went right down the rabbit hole with Will midway through this film. A lot of people have criticized the conceit of Dream House -- whether they were expecting another Amityville opus or simply thought it went a twist too far -- and I'll give them their due. But a great cast really gives this something unique. And even though the story gets a little thread-bare at the end, there's an unexpected satisfaction to it. You might want to watch this with someone else, not because it's particularly scary but because it almost demands to be discussed.

74. Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

PG-13 | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

70 Metascore

A delusional young man strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet.

Director: Craig Gillespie | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, R.D. Reid

Votes: 155,514 | Gross: $5.97M

Lars doesn't live in the real world. He doesn't know how lucky he is. And, by the end of this preposterous and irresistable film, we can't help feeling homesick for the little corner of the world in which he resides. Ultimately this is not just a story about Lars' delusion, but about our own yearning for a kinder, more loving place. Not a false note from Ryan Gosling about whom you must care to make this movie work. Five stars if you enjoy a good happy/sad cry, four stars if you don't.

75. She (1935)

Passed | 101 min | Adventure, Fantasy, Romance

A group of explorers search of the legendary "flame of life," a mysterious force that bestows immortality.

Directors: Lansing C. Holden, Irving Pichel | Stars: Helen Gahagan, Randolph Scott, Helen Mack, Nigel Bruce

Votes: 1,908

Not your father's H. Rider Haggard, nor even your grandfather's -- this is a relic from a time when movies were NEW and everything was NOVEL. If you can imagine it in its own time, this is an enjoyable trip back through social mores, acting styles (centered around microphones hidden around the movie set), and inchoate special effects. Better yet, if you have a cold and would just like to doze in and out of the story (the way you did when you were 9 and on the sofa), this is perfect. Of course, everyone knows the story of Helen Gahagan Douglas (who coined the nickname "Tricky Dick" about her opponent for a California Senate seat, Richard Nixon). And it was produced by Meriam C. Cooper of KING KONG fame, though this is not nearly as ambitious. It's well worth a lazy afternoon.

78. Dark Tower (1987)

Rarer than a hen's tooth when I can, without hesitation, agree with my fellow members who grudgingly, I'm sure, awarded this movie a single star. How much ineptitude does it require to cause Moriarty, Lynley, Bikel and McCarthy to behave like rank amateurs? I use the word 'behave' because it certainly isn't acting. Desultory in every conceivable way. Half-baked and ill-conceived. In other words, a mess and not even a very imaginative one. Only one question: what happened that caused this film to be so bad?

79. Black Swan (2010)

R | 108 min | Drama, Thriller

79 Metascore

Nina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder

Votes: 825,439 | Gross: $106.95M

Lets get the heresy out of the way: Black Swan really isnt ALL THAT. It may be the best picture about one womans descent into madness (Requiem for a Dream, another Aronosky opus, doesnt count) since Repulsion, but it is not Repulsion; if you really want to crawl across broken glass, I recommend you seek out Polanskis classic and compare. Which is not to say that Portman wasnt brilliant but, like the character she plays, there was entirely too much White Swan and not nearly enough Black Swan. Hence, the feeling at the end of being slightly cheated. Entertaining enough if you go into it without too many expectations. This is a 3 Star movie with 5 Star performances, hence a 4 Star review.

80. The Lovely Bones (2009)

PG-13 | 135 min | Drama, Fantasy, Thriller

42 Metascore

Centers on a young girl who has been murdered and watches over her family - and her killer - from purgatory. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Saoirse Ronan, Susan Sarandon

Votes: 180,004 | Gross: $43.82M

Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) directs a movie based on a best-selling (and much loved) novel from Alice Sebold with a truly great cast -- this film should have everything going for it, but, except for the cast. every expectation going-in works against it. You know before sitting down to the movie -- by reading the book, by reading the reviews, or just by listening to the first 15 minutes of Saoirse Ronans voice-over -- that Susie Salmon (as in fish) has been murdered. (The movie spares us of the most horrific details.) We even know who did it. Its impossible to write spoilers about details revealed so quickly and almost matter-of-factly. Whats left is a kind of teen-age version of What Dreams May Come harnessed to two competing narratives: when will her murderer be discovered and how will her family heal? These two narratives require different pacing and tone that never quite seem to compliment one another. That said: Saoirse Ronan shines, Tucci is unforgettably evil, Susan Sarandon is a joy, and the rest of the cast gives it their all. This movie will probably never completely satisfy you, but it will continue to attract an audience because of the book, the director, and the actors.

81. The Tower (2012)

Not Rated | 121 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

A Christmas Eve party at a luxury residential building takes a horrific turn when a fire breaks out.

Director: Ji-hoon Kim | Stars: Kim Sang-kyung, Sol Kyung-gu, Son Ye-jin, Kim In-kwon

Fans of disaster movies, rejoice! This film truly does have it all. The formula may seem familiar to anyone who has seen Towering Inferno or any other Irwin Allen extravaganza -- characters that you care about, characters that you hate. The special effects are convincing and the situations are harrowing. This is the fourth Korean "genre" film that I've seen -- The Host and Tidal Wave are still available to stream, but Sector 7 has been removed. I would recommend all of these movies for any entertaining good time.
