Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count's teenaged daughter.

Director: Genndy Tartakovsky | Stars: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez

Votes: 281,329 | Gross: $148.31M

1/2/17 ASCPL/Blueray Laughed aloud often. Better than anticipated, which was a pleasant bonus.

2. The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)

Passed | 152 min | Drama, Family, Romance

76 Metascore

The dramatic lives of trapeze artists, a clown, and an elephant trainer are told against a background of circus spectacle.

Director: Cecil B. DeMille | Stars: James Stewart, Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, Cornel Wilde

Votes: 16,066 | Gross: $36.00M

1/3/17-1/4/17 TCM/DVR Long movie that I intentionally split into two viewings. Enjoyed the real Ringling Circus bits more than the actual storyline. Found Betty Hutton (the female lead) decidedly unglamorous which is contrary to my idea of a center-ring circus performer.

3. River Lady (1948)

Approved | 78 min | Drama, Western

During the 1850s, crooked lumber syndicate man Beauvais tries to take over the local mill while Sequin, the sensual owner of a gambling riverboat, tries to control the heart of Mississippi lumberjack Dan Corrigan.

Director: George Sherman | Stars: Yvonne De Carlo, Dan Duryea, Rod Cameron, Helena Carter

Votes: 243

1/6/17 ASCPL/DVD Watched this one solely for Yvonne DeCarlo. Never knew she could sing! The movie itself is totally forgettable.

When a disease turns all of humanity into the living dead, the last man on earth becomes a reluctant vampire hunter.

Directors: Ubaldo Ragona, Sidney Salkow | Stars: Vincent Price, Franca Bettoia, Emma Danieli, Giacomo Rossi Stuart

Votes: 21,514

1/23/17 ASCPL/DVD A bit cheesy but I've read the Richard Matheson story and it's got Vincent Price, so I couldn't say no.

5. The Tortoise and the Hare (1935)

Approved | 9 min | Animation, Short, Comedy

Big race. Hare, fast and in lead, stops to loaf and show off to girl bunnies. Tortoise, plodding along at steady, slow pace, wins, although hare tries a last minute burst of speed.

Director: Wilfred Jackson | Stars: Dorothy Compton, Marcellite Garner, Beatrice Hagen, Eddie Holden

Votes: 3,583

1/23/17 TCM/DVR Silly Symphony short film. Early Disney style. Some of the gags featuring Toby Tortoise are still amusing. Max Hare is thoroughly obnoxious. According to Leonard Maltin, he may have influenced Warner Brothers animators in the creation of Bugs Bunny.

6. Ugly Duckling (1939)

Approved | 9 min | Animation, Short, Comedy

A baby duckling is shunned by his family because he is different. He is also rejected by all of the other birds and animals. Finally a mother swan adopts him as one of her brood.

Directors: Jack Cutting, Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske | Stars: Clarence Nash, Amanda Cewel, Tom Cotry

Votes: 3,625

1/23/17 TCM/DVR Silly Symphony short film. More realistic Disney animation style. The quacking/talking of the ducks makes the dialogue nearly comprehensible. The emotions of the title character are convincingly conveyed. A great interpretation of the Hans Christian Anderson classic.

7. Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite (2013 Video)

Not Rated | 71 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

When the Joker and Lex Luthor form an alliance, Batman must team up with the Justice League in order to stop them.

Director: Jon Burton | Stars: Clancy Brown, Troy Baker, Christopher Corey Smith, Charlie Schlatter

Votes: 5,687

Votes: 12,706 | Gross: $23.30M

2/11-2/13/17 AMC/DVR

The story is a bit dated but still contains a sprinkling of clever lines. Rosalind Russell is spectacular!

9. Trainwreck (2015)

R | 125 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

75 Metascore

Having thought that monogamy was never possible, a commitment-phobic career woman may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy.

Director: Judd Apatow | Stars: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn

Votes: 142,819 | Gross: $110.21M

2/11/17 ASCPL/DVD

The only humorous parts in this movie are the short cameos by sports celebrities. The rest is truly unfunny. And I can buy Amy Schumer as a slut but never Bill Hader as a love interest. Never.

10. Les Misérables (2012)

PG-13 | 158 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

Votes: 35,017 | Gross: $47.74M

Begun 2/28/17, finished 3/12/17 AMC DVR

A lifelong favorite Western. The scenes with Will Geer and Robert Redford are charming.

Directors: Pete Docter, Ronnie Del Carmen | Stars: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling

Votes: 786,148 | Gross: $356.46M

3/2/17 ASCPL/BluRay

Liked parts but overall was disappointed that it was not closer to the source material in Reason and Emotion. Additionally, I'm not a fan of Amy Poehler so her voice-acting did not appeal to me.

Votes: 91,026 | Gross: $10.00M
