"Ovu listu '100 najboljih filmova' (u prvih sto godina kinematografije) treba shvatiti iskljucivo kao 'drustvenu igru'; ona nema nikakvih istoriografskih, teorijskih, estetskih ili bilo kakvih drugih ("programskih") ambicija; nadasve, ona je privatna.
Otuda se, samo po sebi, razume da je lista krajnje subjektivna, te ako eventualno reflektuje neki individualni stav prema filmskoj umetnosti (sto je, svakako, problematicno ocekivanje) onda sasvim sigurno odrazava i jedno posebno, krajnje licno iskustvo, u kojem se "vrednosti" do neprepoznavanja mesaju sa uspomenama, sklonostima, svakojakim uticajima, drugim iskustvima i konkretnom (beogradskom) potkulturnom mitologijom.
Jasno je, s druge strane, da ovih "100 najboljih" odslikavaju i ogranicenja tog iskustva, propuste "u obrazovanju" ili estetske animozitete (bez pokrica?); lista nedvosmisleno ukazuje na moje nepoznavanje sovjetske kinematografije i nemackog zvucnog filma do 1945. godine, te potvrdjuje da sam neosetljiv na eventualne vrednosti skandinavskog ili japanskog kinematografskog doprinosa.

Vecinu filmova koji su se "kvalifikovali" uspeo sam da, tokom ovih meseci, ponovo vidim; ima, medjutim, nekih za koje me vezuje samo maglovito secanje, sto je bio dodatni razlog da im i ovog puta poklonim poverenje.
Svaka "drustvena igra" ove vrste plod je trenutka: sastavljena u letnjim mesecima i tokom jeseni, ova lista je definitivno uoblicena u prva tri decembarska dana, sa garancijom koja istice - odmah; vec danas, kad je ovaj broj 'New Momenta' u citaocevim rukama, izbor bi sigurno pretrpeo mnoge izmene, ako vec ne bi bio zamenjen sa nekih drugih "100 najboljih". Jer, svako novo delenje je nova prica! Kriterijum izbora nije ujednacen: bio je "stroziji" za period od pojave zvuka (do 1930) jer se, u sustini, ipak radi o dve razlicite umetnosti, i prema filmovima nastalim u protekle dve decenije, buduci da su oni jos "suvise blizu", u vecini bez vremenskog "taloga", bez "aure" koja i daje osnovnu draz ovakvim igrarijama. Nisam predvidjao donosenje nikakvih zakljucaka. Ali, sama lista, svojim konacnim oblikom, ukazuje na neke cinjenice od provokativne zanimljivosti. Naime, ako je bar suditi po mom izboru, najplodnija godina u dosadasnjoj filmskoj istoriji je 1956. (osam naslova, medju kojima su i 'Tragaci', "najbolji film svih vremena"); sledi sedam filmova u 1944. godini, dok 1939. godina koja se obicno smatra najbericetnijom, zauzima tek "zlatnu sredinu".
Neke druge "statistike" su takodje interesantne. Najvise uloga u najboljim filmova ima Humphrey Bogart (8), William Holden se pojavio sest puta (sto moze biti iznenadjenje samo za neupucene), a Cary Grant i Sterling Hayden (Titov partizan, jedno vreme clan KP SAD) imaju cetiri "recke", koliko i veliki epizodista Warren Oates.
Gotovo svi filmovi su americke produkcije. (Jedina zemlja koja ima vise od jednog "najboljeg" je Francuska, sto me licno ne veseli.) To potvrdjuje da je slozenica "americki film" pleonazam. No, valja primetiti da su znacajan broj ovih americkih filmova rezirali Evropljani, poglavito reditelji poreklom iz Nemacke i drugih podunavskih zemalja, koji su u Hollywood pristigli posle 1933. godine. Murnau i Sternberg su tamo jos od ranije. Da i ne pominjemo sta je znacio transfer Hitchcocka. Ovo iznova dokazuje sudbinsku realnost "dijalektickog skoka" koji se (na zalost, Hitlerovom zaslugom) dogodio spojem americkog nacina produkcije (i filmske naracije), okrenute populistickim zahtevima, i evropskog estetskog (formalnog) elitizma, najpre onog ekspresionisticke provenijencije, to jest, s druge strane, pobija omiljenu kriticarsku tezu o prirodnom i trajnom rivalitetu (evropskog) pojma 'cinema' i (americke) definicije 'movie'. Primeri Melvillea i "novog talasa" to takodje potvrdjuju.
Mozda sam duzan da (za svaki slucaj) napomenem kako je prvobitna ideja o ovoj listi predvidjala da svaki izabrani film bude propracen "komentarom" u jednoj ili dve recenice; mada je posao bio skoro priveden kraju, odustao sam od takve namere u zadnji cas iz jednog jednostavnog razloga: ovaj bi tekst tada zaposeo prostor od 20 do 40 novinskih slajfni, sto je ne samo malo mnogo za kapacitet ovog casopisa, vec i pretenciozno iznad podnosljive granice.
Filmovi su "poredjani" po godini svoje proizvodnje (Podaci: 'Filmska enciklopedija JLZ'); njihovo rangiranje bilo kakve vrste predstavljalo bi odvec komplikovanu operaciju, cije osetljive nijanse imaju obicno grube posledice. Ipak, izabrao sam prvih deset; ti su filmovi obelezeni arapskom cifrom u zagradi iza naziva. To mozda znaci da je, na izvestan nacin, ovaj poduhvat bio, od samog pocetka, pomalo predimenzioniran. Ili - ipak - ne? Dosao sam do zakljucka da je - ako ne vec samo deset - jedina prava lista "najboljih" ona koja sadrzi 1000 naslova. Ako neko namerava da se (pre moje malenkosti) poduhvati tog posla, evo za njega jednog prakticnog saveta, koji olaksava mukotrpnost svakog pocetka - odmah ubelezite sve filmove Howarda Hawksa, Billyja Wildera, Alfreda Hitchcocka i Johna Hustona!
