When Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had “renewed” “3 Body Problem,” but the streamer notably didn’t refer to the extension as a “Season 2.” Instead, it appears to be more of a case of Netflix ordering “additional episodes” instead of a new, full Season 2 order.
Per a press release, the exact number of seasons and episodes will be announced at a later date.
It appears that the order will take the series to its finale, as creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo noted in a statement that they “get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.” In an April interview with Collider, Benioff said the team would “need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”

John Carter and Wall-e director Andrew Stanton is working on a fascinating new sci-fi film. If In The Blink Of An Eye sticks to the script, we could be in for something special.
His career stretching back to the late 1980s, Andrew Stanton is best known for his animated work at Pixar, whether it’s as writer (1995’s ground-breaking Toy Story) or writer-director.
As a live-action filmmaker, he’s probably almost as well known for 2012’s John Carter, a hugely expensive sci-fi adventure based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess Of Mars. One of those films that seemed to have vultures circling it before it was even released, John Carter was ultimately a box office misfire.
In the wake of it, Stanton kept himself busy with animated projects at Disney and Pixar, but has also found time to write or direct the odd TV episode, including instalments of Stranger Things,...

The tale of John Carter has been iconic in the realm of science fiction novels for a long time, as it started way before Frank Herbert wrote his sci-fi epic, Dune. Unfortunately, the story hasn’t had the best fate in the world of movies, with several attempts never reaching their full potential due to development hell, but in 2012, Disney took the risk and created a film based on the Barsoom series written by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Things didn’t go well for Andrew Stanton’s adaptation, called John Carter, as it became one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time, but our close sources say that the character is set to make a comeback.

The essence of Netflix’s apocalyptic sci-fi series “3 Body Problem” is contained within the immersive VR game engineered by the San-Ti aliens. Using a headset, the VR game transports the player from China’s Shang Dynasty to Tudor England to Kubla Khan’s Xanadu, recreating the chaotic destruction of the alien planet as a result of living in an unstable three-star solar system.
In adapting Liu Cixin’s acclaimed novel, showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss (“Game of Thrones”) and Alexander Woo made the VR game the VFX centerpiece early on, particularly for Episode 3 (“Destroyer of Worlds”), directed by Pixar’s Andrew Stanton (“Wall-e”). Here cosmologist Jin (Jess Hong) and entrepreneur Jack (John Bradley) stand on the observation deck of the Kubla Khan Pleasure Dome and witness 30 million people getting sucked up into the sun because of reverse gravity. It’s a trippy CG effect from Scanline.

The final trailer for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem teases that “they” are coming and reveals the discovery in the ’70s of something called the “Wow” signal. There’s a lot going on in the final trailer, yet it still manages to pull off being as vague as possible. If you haven’t read Liu Cixin’s 3 Body Problem book trilogy, the trailer will hint at what’s in store without spoiling the experience.
Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood‘s Alexander Woo created the series and serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, encouraged Benioff and Weiss to read the trilogy back in 2019, and both were immediately hooked.

We’ve really been spoiled rotten when it comes to great telly. True Detective, Shōgun, The Gentlemen… how do we make time for all these shows? We’ve also got House Of The Dragon season two to look forward to as well as The Last Of Us season two next year.
Allow us to add another one to the list of highly anticipated TV shows heading our way. Netflix have adapted Liu Cixin’s novel of the same name and the final trailer has just emerged online.

The final trailer just dropped, and it’s all hands on deck for a battle that looks intense. From what we’ve gathered, Earth’s brightest are bracing for a showdown they’re not sure they can handle.
Created by the trio David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, the show promises a mix of mystery and sci-fi, drawing from the beloved novel. The cast is star-studded, featuring talents like Benedict Wong, Eiza González, and Jonathan Pryce, among others. It’s a lineup that sparks excitement and curiosity.
What’s intriguing is the show’s premise, focusing on a pivotal choice made in 1960s China, echoing through time and causing nature’s laws to crumble. This leads a group of scientists and an unconventional detective to face an unprecedented threat to humanity.

In “3 Body Problem,” a young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes,...

Pixar is working away on Toy Story 5 – although even Tim Allen wonders if five may be too many…
It was earlier in the year that Disney boss, Bob Iger, decided to offset some of the company’s problems by announcing a raft of sequels to the firm’s megahits. Those films? Frozen 3, Zootropolis 2 and – yep – Toy Story 5.
It was back in 2019 that the Toy Story saga appeared to have come to an end at Pixar, with the just-about-got-away-with-it Toy Story 4. Realistically, Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to the trilogy, but the fourth film had enough in the tank, and certainly enough in the bank. Spin-off movie Lightyear fell to Earth in the summer of 2022.
When Iger announced Toy Story 5 though, there was some suspicion as to whether the lead voices – Tom Hanks and Tim Allen – would be persuaded to return to voice Woody and Buzz again.

Animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often, animated movies are some of the most original, memorable, and well-told stories of the entire year yet they are, more often than not, confined to the category of Best Animated Picture.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” “Fantasia,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “The Lion King,” “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” “Wall-e,” “Shrek,” and last year’s Best Animated Picture winner, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” are just a handful of all-time classic movies that aren’t great animated movies, they are great movies period. Despite this, however, we have only had three animated movies in Oscars history that have been nominated for Best Picture.
“Beauty and the Beast” was the first animated movie to do so, landing a Best Picture bid in 1991. Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, “Beauty and the Beast...

This week “America’s Got Talent” season 18 continued the second stage of the competition, known as “Qualifiers.” In this round, 55 acts are divided into five groups for five weeks of performances, all in the hopes of advancing to The Finals. While series judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel are still around to offer their support and critique of the acts, the power is out of their hands and rests all in America’s vote. Only two acts from each of the five qualifying groups will win over America and earn a spot in the “AGT” finale.

“America’s Got Talent” continued the live shows of its 18th season on August 29 with the second round of performances in the “Qualifiers.” On Tuesday night’s show, 11 acts performed for America’s vote and only two of them will advance to “The Finals” when the results are delivered by Terry Crews on Wednesday night. Before that happens, we can reveal that Your favorite act of the night was group dance act Murmuration, as voted on by viewers in Gold Derby’s overnight poll.
Murmuration had the all-important spot of closing out Tuesday’s performance show as the final act to make their case for a spot in the finale. Following their first round audition, Howie Mandel selected them as his personal Golden Buzzer act and was enthusiastic about their follow-up performance. Simon Cowell added that they are “in a different league” compared to all the other acts that performed Tuesday night.

Popular metal band Steel Panther had the entire audience up on their feet during the “America’s Got Talent” live show on Tuesday, August 29. (Read our minute-by-minute recap.) The four-member group decided to sing “Death to All But Metal” for their live performance, though they admittedly had to change some of the lyrics in order to appear on NBC during primetime. What did You think of Steel Panther’s latest performance? Watch the live “AGT” video above.
“Look at this room — everyone on their feet, everyone screaming,” Heidi Klum shouted out after Steel Panther’s high-octane performance. She praised how they “rocked the stage” as well as their overall look, including the spandex and long hair. Heidi added, “You sound amazing, especially the high note. Everyone was on it. Well done!”

Howie Mandel‘s eye-popping Golden Buzzer, Murmuration, wowed the judges during the “America’s Got Talent” Season 18 live show on Tuesday, August 29. (Read our minute-by-minute recap.) The 65-member dance group from Nimes, France hypnotized viewers with their in-sync movements set to a fast-paced track, which gave us flashbacks to The Mayyas, a similar act that ultimately won last year’s competition. Watch the live “AGT” video above.
Following their live act, which incorporated top hats, white gloves and hand lights, the members of the dance crew spelled out “Stop Hate We Need Love And Unity” with their arms. Howie praised their “uniqueness” and urged America to vote for Murmuration because, “They have to be in the finals.”
Simon Cowell proclaimed, “This was in a different league to anything we’ve seen so far,” and called them “literally perfection.” Sofia Vergara chimed in that Murmuration was “breathtaking” and predicted they would have a “special night.

As in the past, this year’s champion will take home a $1 million cash prize and be able to showcase their talent as a headlining act in Las Vegas. Just two years ago, it seemed like the summer blockbuster might be a thing of the past. After Covid kept cinemas closed across the United States for the majority of 2020, the box office reopened in 2021 on uncertain footing, with many high profile flops and a soft performance for the movies overall. That summer seemed like the harbinger of the end for the seasonal release strategy that “Jaws” perfected all the way back in 1975, wherein the hottest months hosts the biggest titles — marketed aggressively to theatergoers. It seemed like those days were behind us, and the streaming age had finally overtaken the days when movies could be events. So thank goodness for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
Things aren’t entirely rosy at cinemas again (and Hollywood writ large is a mess), but things are improving at the box office with those July 21 releases helping to massively goose theatrical business, picking up where...

Just when you thought you’d heard every “Harvey Weinstein is a monster” story, something new emerges.
The latest tale comes courtesy of Samantha Morton, who appeared on the Spotify’s “The Louis Theroux Podcast” and recounted how the one-time megaproducer once threatened that she “will not work again” after she declined starring in one of his movies — and in one instance, he made good on that promise.
Morton recalled on the podcast interview, published Monday, how she declined to star in a 2000 romantic comedy “About Adam,” which eventually starred Kate Hudson, Stuart Townsend and Frances O’Connor. Weinstein then threatened to ruin her life.
“I said, ‘I don’t like it.’ I think the film is really misogynistic, and I don’t want to be part of it,'” shes said. “The casting director came back with, ‘You don’t say no to Harvey.'” To which she said, “Well it’s not to him.

“Barbie” is a box office smash, along with its acclaim from critics and audiences alike. If you follow the social media chatter and the general feeling from most pundits, it could be a viable awards contender for Warner Bros. One category being debated is where the screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach would be able to compete — whether in original or adapted screenplay. The answer lies in how the WGA classifies it and whether the Academy could or would overrule that choice.
Variety confirms there are ongoing conversations with strategists and Warner Bros regarding where “Barbie” would compete at next year’s ceremony.
On the title cards, it reads “Based on ‘Barbie’ by Mattel,” which is, of course, a toy company. At the same time, there have been multiple CGI films and TV series featuring the fashion doll since its debut in the late 1980s (42 to be precise). This...

In these politically polarized times, new movies are constantly being scrutinized for their messaging. Through today’s lens, there may be some who would criticize Pixar’s 2008 masterpiece Wall-e for its subtle jabs at consumerism and some pro-environmental message. But when the movie was released 15 years ago, director and co-writer Andrew Stanton told us that politics were the furthest thing from his mind as he was making the film, since he was just trying to tell a story about relationships. “Ozi, Voice of the Forest” premiered at the Annecy Festival on June 13, kicking off a series of films that seek to highlight dangers to the environment.
The film tells the story of a young orangutan Ozi, voiced by Amandla Stenberg (“The Hunger Games”), who becomes separated from her parents when her rain forest home is devastated by a company producing palm oil.
With the additional voice talents of Laura Dern, Djimon Hounsou and Donald Sutherland, the film also boasts a broad array of talent behind the camera including Keith Chapman, creator of “Paw Patrol” and Madrid-based Rodrigo Blaas, behind the “Sith” episode in “Star Wars Visions,” as part of the creative team. Leonardo DiCaprio and legendary producer and former studio head Mike Medavoy are credited as producers.

After one of the most impressive winning streaks in Hollywood history, Pixar has seen its fortunes reversed in recent years, with last year’s flop Lightyear and a pandemic-era policy of sending its features straight to streaming at Disney+. Now, Pixar faces a major test of brand strength as it prepares to unveil Elemental, its first original theatrical feature since Covid-19 hit.
Directed by Peter Sohn, the film is based on an original story set in a world where fire, water, earth and air residents live together. Additionally, the movie is tracking to soft numbers, just $37 million to $38 million over the June 16-18 opening weekend, which it shares with Warner Bros.’ The Flash. Science and animation are tied together like a moon to a planet. While they exist on distant planes and their connection is invisible, to animate is to have a fundamental understanding of science and movement. The job of both an animator and a scientist is to understand the building blocks of reality; the former bears the burden of twisting and subverting that understanding into a form of heightened reality, a surrealism giving birth to cinema.

“From the first read I knew Colby Day’s script was special,” said Stanton, “and it has only become more rarified of a project as our team has formed. What a privilege to have such an ideal cast and crew realize this beautiful story.”
“Andrew is a visionary artist whose unique gifts as a storyteller shine in this beautiful film,” added Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum.

Ready to cry your eyes out again? Because there’s a new “Up” short film from Pixar that should do the trick.
“Carl’s Date,” a short film produced after the series of “Up”-based shorts called “Dug Days” that premiered on Disney+ in 2021, will get the big screen treatment this June. The short is set to appear before “Elemental,” the new Pixar feature from Peter Sohn (who partially inspired the character of Russell in “Up”), and features Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) get ready for his first date since Ellie passed away. It is deeply touching and hilarious and appropriate as a preamble for “Elemental,” which focuses on the love story between two very opposite characters – one made of fire and the other made of water.
“Carl’s Date” was written and directed by Pixar stalwart Bob Peterson, who co-wrote and co-directed “Up” and who wrote and directed the rest of the “Dug Days” shorts,...

Rashida Jones has joined Kate McKinnon to star in In the Blink of An Eye, a sci-fi drama that Andrew Stanton is directing for Searchlight Pictures.
