This week’s streaming premieres bring a Bollywood-inspired action romp, a moving mother-son drama, and an important battle to save the Mushroom Kingdom. The latter is one of the highest-grossing movies ever made, and now you — I mean, uh, your kids — can watch it over and over again. But first, check out a Sundance indie that will have you hooting and hollering.
This week’s contender to watch: “Polite Society”
After a promising Sundance premiere, “Polite Society” opened to strong reviews and decent grosses for an indie without many well-known names. It’s part wedding comedy, part Tarantino, part “Kung Fu Hustle,” and part “Ocean’s Eleven.” Priya Kansara, best known as Miss Eaton on “Bridgerton,” stars as an aspiring martial-arts stuntwoman who will gladly break out the kung fu if it means stopping her sister (Rita Arya of “The Umbrella Academy”) from going through with her ill-advised marriage. “Polite Society,...

Netflix has received a notable addition to its service.
Among the wide range of original titles on the streaming platform this month is a licensed acquisition that users have been waiting more than a year for.
Typically on Netflix, the most recent season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been added between January and March.
However, the eighth and final season of the sitcom, which aired in the US in 2021, never arrived in 2022.
This was most likely due to the fact that the show’s network, NBC, had exclusive rights to feature the series on its specialised streaming service, Peacock.
Fortunately, enough time has passed for the 10-episode final season to be added to Netflix. It arrived on Thursday (20 April)

When the Writers Guild of America announced their 2023 nominations, the Episodic Drama category featured installments from juggernaut contenders “Better Call Saul” and “Ozark” and breakout series “Bad Sisters” and “Severance.” It also featured one surprise — and absolutely inspired — entry: the series finale of Paramount+’s “The Good Fight.” Written by series co-creators Michelle King and Robert King, the episode is the first of this critically-acclaimed legal drama and political satire to earn a nomination from the guild. Could that unexpected bid signal another surprise nomination at the upcoming Emmy Awards?
Both the WGA and the Emmys have certainly shown their appreciation for the Kings before for “The Good Wife,” the predecessor series to “The Good Fight.” At the Emmys, they earned their first Drama Writing nomination for the pilot back in 2010 and a bookend bid for the series finale “End” in 2016. The Brooklyn 99 cast is full of great actors, both established stars and promising up-and-coming talent, playing a wide array of delightfully wacky characters populating the eponymous NYPD precinct. Each episode of Brooklyn 99’s eight seasons is shot and structured like a classical police procedural, with its detectives tackling a different case, but with an absurdist sense of humor. From the deadpan captain to the yogurt-loving sergeant to the immature detective to the pair of wildly incompetent veteran cops, the titular precinct in Brooklyn 99 is full of hilarious comedic personalities.
Throughout its entire run, Brooklyn 99 was a hit with critics and audiences alike. A huge part of the show’s appeal was the palpable on-screen chemistry shared by its cast. The Brooklyn 99 cast was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2014, but lost to the...

In the penultimate season of “The Good Fight,” series costar Delroy Lindo bid farewell to his savvy and charismatic character Adrian Boseman. For the final season of the Paramount+ show, which aired its series finale on Nov. 10, creators Robert King and Michelle King introduced the equally compelling Andre Braugher to the ensemble in the role of Ri’Chard Lane, a walking brand of a lawyer and a Machiavellian character who complicates the leadership dynamics between Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) and named partner Liz Reddick (Audra McDonald). Could the celebrated award-winning actor, who delivered a bravura turn as the scene-stealing Ri’Chard, help the overlooked show finally break through at the Emmy Awards?
See ‘The Good Fight’ series finale: How the daring drama pulled off an exceptional finish
Much like his co-star Baranski, Braugher has been an Emmy nominations magnet with 11 to date, attracting acclaim and recognition for his work across genres throughout his career.

Brooklyn 99 can still continue via a new spin-off that will follow a particular character — Captain Raymond Holt. A couple of years since Fox's original cancelation of the cop-centric sitcom, NBC also pulled the plug on the project, resulting in its official ending in 2021. Since the show's end was pre-planned, Brooklyn 99's producers and writers were able to craft a perfect send-off to 99tth Precinct as many of its members go through life changes which marked the end of an era for the squad. Despite this, however, the comedy could still move forward, but this time, through a prequel story.
It has been just a couple of years since Brooklyn 99 ended after season 8, but the show remains relevant as ever. Aside from a devoted fan base that includes some high-profile actors such as Mark Hamill and Lin Manuel Miranda, its popularity endured thanks to its availability on streaming platforms,...

Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for…well, a lot of things. But mainly for “Abbott Elementary” Season 2.
Is there anything as satisfying as the inevitable kiss in a slow-burn TV romance? It’s a tough feeling to beat, based on the trope’s popularity from the days of Sam and Diane on “Cheers” up until more recent television comedies (spoilers ahead). Watching two characters kiss after episodes or years of romantic and sexual tension feels like cause for celebration — even if their storylines are so tangled that they may not find that coveted happy ending just yet.
“Abbott Elementary” joined the list this week (finally) with “Teacher Conference,” the 16th episode of Season 2, written by Quinta Brunson. The episode features a much-anticipated kiss between Janine and Gregory that delighted viewers and will undoubtedly complicate its characters’ lives, like all great TV kisses do.

Comedian and actor Richard Belzer, who sadly died on Sunday at age 78, played detective John Munch on several series, including “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” And on every single one of them, he had something wise and witty to say.
The character of John Munch was created on the underrated ’90s police drama “Homicide: Life on the Street.” Munch was known for his one-liners, metaphysical riffs and sprawling conspiracy theories while solving murders in Baltimore alongside detectives played by Andre Braugher, Daniel Baldwin and Ned Beatty. As he mused in one episode: “If a murder is committed in Baltimore and no homicide detective takes the call, did that homicide actually occur?”
He got a bit blue when the character moved over to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 1999, where the topics were rape, assault and, sometimes, sexual dysfunction, but he was still the same Munch.

Thomas Jane opens up about the bleak ending of his 2007 sci-fi horror film The Mist, addressing whether the movie's controversial conclusion could ever be produced in the current Hollywood landscape. The film is an adaptation of acclaimed horror author Stephen King's 1980 novella of the same name, and stars Jane alongside Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher, and Toby Jones. In The Mist, the town of Bridgton, Maine is suddenly engulfed by a thick mist that hides a sinister, unseen group of creatures from another world due to a government experiment gone wrong, with a group of survivors attempting to survive the sudden plague of horrors by any means necessary.
Jane opened up about The Mist's tragic, hopeless final act in an interview with Daily Dead (via /Film), addressing whether the conclusion that saw Jane's David become the sole survivor after his party chose to take their lives...

In 1989, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, and Andre Braugher starred in the film "Glory," directed by Edward Zwick. It was the story of the American Civil War's 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, which was one of the earliest Black regiments in the Union Army. It was based on the 1965 novel "One Gallant Rush" by Peter Burchard, the 1973 novel "Lay This Laurel" by Lincoln Kirstein, and the personal letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the leader of the 54th.
In the film, Shaw gives the Black soldiers the option to walk away after they learn that the Confederacy responded to the Emancipation Proclamation by ordering all captured Black men to be returned to slavery. No sitcom is ever complete without its defining catchphrase, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine probably has the most memorable one among its comedy series contemporaries. The popular and unforgettable “Nine-Nine!” catchphrase of 99th precinct’s police officers is often heard as a chant by the show’s ensemble cast members. While most catchphrases tend to function on the comedic side like Terry’s “Terry loves yogurt” or Jake’s “Title of Your Sex Tape,” “Nine-Nine!” is different.
Harboring cast members from the likes of Andre Braugher, Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, and many more, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a cornucopia of talented actors and comedians who had a hand in most of the show’s running gags. This includes Brooklyn Nine-Nine's famous “Nine-Nine!” chant which was revealed to be Deadpool 2 actor Terry Crews’ doing, proving that his involvement in Brooklyn Nine-Nine was godsent. On Oct 5, 2017, New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor published a scorching exposé titled "Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades," which encouraged legions of women to come forward and share their own stories of abuse at the hands of one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. Considering the story's connection to the moviemaking industry, it was only a matter of time before the story was given the similar dramatization treatment that was done for Fox News CEO Roger Ailes in "Bombshell." The result was Emmy Award-winning director Maria Schrader's "She Said," from a script by Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Two-time Academy Award-nominee Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star as Twohey and Kantor, delivering phenomenal performances in this film highlighting just how intense the process was to bring Weinstein to justice and call him out publicly.
Unfortunately, "She Said" did not perform well at the box office.

2010's Salt was a hit star vehicle for Angelina Jolie, but why did the Salt 2 movie fail to materialize? Angelina Jolie was a regular face in the action genre in the mid-2000s, which include her Tomb Raider movies and comic adaptation Wanted. Tom Cruise was originally attached to Salt, which dealt with a CIA agent named Edwin Salt going on the run when he's accused of being a Russian mole. Cruise was attached for over a year before departing as he felt the character was a little too close to Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt. Brooklyn 99 and New Girl are both iconic shows, so it only made sense to have a crossover between them, and here are which episodes to watch. At the time of the crossover, both Brooklyn 99 and New Girl were airing on Fox with New Girl in its later seasons as it had started two years before Brooklyn 99, in 2011. Brooklyn 99 and New Girl are set on opposite sides of the country, so the crossovers had to bring the New Girl ensemble to the East Coast to be able to merge them properly.
The logistics of the Brooklyn 99 and New Girl crossover were easily solved with the New Girl gang going across to New York for Schmidt’s (Max Greenfield) high school reunion. The crossover is split into two parts, with the first half airing as a Brooklyn 99 episode and the second part aired immediately after this as a New Girl episode,...

In Universal’s She Said, Andre Braugher plays real-life journalist Dean Baquet, the former executive editor of The New York Times who helped spearhead the paper’s investigation into Harvey Weinstein. While this is the first time the actor has played a historical figure who is still alive (he previously portrayed Jackie Robinson and labor unionist A. Philip Randolph, for example), Braugher didn’t feel he had to meet Baquet to capture the spirit of the editor.
