Anyone in the biz knows that the true representation of a movie critic has never been seen in mass media. Sitting in the dark before racing to make an embargo-break deadline, then kvetching online about weak third acts? Brad Pitt material, all of it.
Luckily, Quentin Tarantino’s next project may fix all that. Deadline reported that a deal is imminent for the director and star to reunite for Tarantino’s next and (allegedly) final picture, “The Movie Critic.” Pitt won Best Supporting Actor at the 2020 Oscars for his turn in Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” which also won Best Production Design for Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh, plus eight other nominations, including Best Picture. The two also worked together on “Inglorious Basterds.”

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. But before we get too ahead of ourselves by predicting who might win this category, let’s take a look back at the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Production Design.
We’re going to take a look at the academy’s tastes here to see what type of films in what type of setting they nominate most. Then, we’ll try to apply those findings to this year’s race as we scrutinize the movies hoping for a nomination in this design category. Here we go.
These 10 winners seem like totally different movies but a closer look does show some similarities. Firstly, seven out of the 10 are set in the real world. “The Shape of Water...

Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.
With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. They love biopics in the acting categories, for example, so what are they partial to in Production Design? Take a look at the below chart.

“Sex is not part of my vision of cinema,” Oscar-winning writer-director Quentin Tarantino said in an interview with a Spanish news outlet (as per EW). And now that we think about it, no, there aren’t too many scenes of lovemaking in the auteur’s oeuvre.
There is no shortage of buff dudes (Brad Pitt removing his shirt in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” received a round of applause at its New York press premiere) and fetching young women (have you seen “Death Proof”?) but, yeah, not really any “sex scenes” per se.
“It’s a pain to shoot sex scenes, everyone is very tense,” he said, adding, “If it was already a bit problematic to do it before, now it is even more so. If there had ever been a sex scene that was essential to the story,...

The Hollywood Reporter broke news on Tuesday night about Quentin Tarantino’s next project. The trade’s sources say that the two-time Oscar winner, who turns 60 later this month, has finished a script and hopes to start shooting this autumn. The title is “The Movie Critic,” it is set in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and has a female lead.
That’s all that’s known for certain (and even this remains unconfirmed by Tarantino), but that didn’t stop many from theorizing. Over the decades, Tarantino has made his affection for critic Pauline Kael known. In the late 1970s, Kael held, for a short time, a position within Paramount Pictures (brought in at Warren Beatty’s suggestion) and that certainly could be the focal point of the project.
Keep in mind, however, that when word first broke about “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” initial chit-chat was that...

The films competing for the 2023 Best Production Design Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” “Elvis,” and “The Fabelmans.” Our odds currently indicate that “Babylon” (10/3) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Elvis” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (4/1), “All Quiet on the Western Front” (9/2), and “The Fabelmans” (9/2).
There being 12 individual craftspeople in this lineup makes it the category’s largest since 2010. The last time there were more than this was 1988, when “The Last Emperor” designers Bruno Cesari, Osvaldo Desideri, and Ferdinando Scarfiotti defeated 11 challengers. The current group consists of four past winners and eight newcomers, with those who make up the latter bunch being Karen Murphy (“Elvis”), “All Quiet on the Western Front” duo Ernestine Hipper and Christian M. Goldbeck, “Babylon” pair Anthony Carlino and Florencia Martin, and “Avatar: The Way of Water” trio Dylan Cole, Vanessa Cole, and Ben Procter.

Production designer Patrice Vermette and set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos took home statuettes for their work on Dune at the Academy Awards on Sunday, with Vermette paying “special” tribute to his “friend” Jean-Marc Vallée—the Canadian filmmaker behind Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club and more, who died suddenly in December, aged 58.
Vermette also thanked director Denis Villeneuve “for allowing us to dream” and “for being a great friend,” saying, “I owe this to you.”
“I’m such a crybaby, I’m sorry,” added Sipos. “It means an awful lot and I just want to thank my team and everyone who participated, and for the opportunity.”

The films competing for the 2022 Best Production Design Oscar are “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Power of the Dog,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and “West Side Story.” Our odds currently indicate that “Dune” (16/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Nightmare Alley” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (9/2), and “The Power of the Dog” (9/2).

“It’s humbling, to tell you the truth,” exclaims production designer Stefan Dechant about receiving his first career Oscar nomination for his work on “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” This adaptation the classic Shakespeare drama, written and directed by Oscar winner Joel Coen, stars Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as the murderous title couple. Along with Dechant’s nomination, the film also Oscar nods for Actor (Washington) and Cinematography. Check out our exclusive video interview with Dechant above.

Last Updated March 7: Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “No Time to Die” were the big film winners March 5 at the 26th Art Directors Guild Awards (held at the Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown). However, the production design race now comes down to “Dune” and “Nightmare Alley.”

The early days of awards season bring buzz and promise, but they also mean it’s time for studios to develop strategy and brainstorm opportunities to strike.
With the Toronto International Film Festival handing out its prestigious People’s Choice prize to Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast,” the Focus Features drama has the authority to declare itself the best picture front-runner for this awards season — but holding on to the throne won’t be easy.
Speaking of thrones, Joel Coen’s adaptation of “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” his first solo directorial helm without his brother Ethan in years, played like gangbusters at the Sept. 24 opening night of the New York Film Festival.
Taking on William Shakespeare is always a daunting task, with some films finding success (such as Branagh’s 1996 “Hamlet” or Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version of “Romeo + Juliet”) and others not so much.

Cinemas are just reopening, but two-time Oscar winner Quentin Tarantino has the No. 1-selling book on Amazon with his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: A Novel, which just dropped today.
The 400-page paperback expands on the story Tarantino laid down in his 2019 movie, which went on to be the second-highest-grossing film of his career with $375 million worldwide after Django Unchained‘s $426 million. It also was nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay for the filmmaker, winning Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt and Best Production Design for Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh’s re-creation of 1969 Los Angeles. One of the plots Tarantino’s novelization further details is the backstory of Pitt’s stuntman Cliff Booth and whether he killed his wife — a dark cloud that followed his career in the movie.

Barry Levinson's gangster biopic Bugsy was the most nominated movie at the 1991 Oscars, ten nods in total, including Picture, Director, and Actor. Following a pattern that is very clearly emerging now, the Critics’ Choice Awards is adjusting its dates to reflect changes the Motion Picture Academy announced earlier this week for Oscar season. The Critics’ Choice Awards for Movies and Television will now take place at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, and again be hosted by Taye Diggs airing on the CW Network Sunday March 7.
Eligibility for movies will also follow the Academy’s lead and now will include all films released between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021. TV eligibility remains solely for programs first seen in 2020 only.
“Now more than ever, people are turning to film and television as a source of comfort, as a means of education, and as a way to connect,” said Critics’ Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin. “With the revised timeline, we are looking forward to celebrating all of the brilliant new work created during this extended season.”

Every time I’ve wandered into a department store in the past decade or so, I inevitably run into a display of sassy, glittering shirts emblazoned with aggressively empowering phrases — “Feminist,” “Girl Boss,” “The Future Is Female” — aimed at teenagers and millennial women like me. Corporate feminism like this tends to smooth the edges off the movement’s radicalism by frantically waving pink pompoms in our faces, turning the idea of “girl power” into an aesthetic. It’s not overall a terrible thing to promote encouraging messages in the name of equality, or something like it. But one side effect of being so blatantly pandered to, with the endgame of getting us to buy what they’re selling, is a bone-deep, irritated exhaustion.
This is how I felt watching the Oscars this year. It was nice, in theory, for Steve Martin and Chris Rock to acknowledge the fact that women...

During his acceptance speech he said, “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is “the most personal is the most creative.

Though it lost Best Picture, “1917,” Sam Mendes’ single-shot, World War I extravaganza, was rewarded with the most crafts Oscars Sunday night. For its technical virtuosity it received three awards, powered by cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second win for his brilliant camera choreography.
Deakins was joined by the sound mixing team of Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for their intricate soundscape as part of the continuous-shot narrative, and, surprisingly, Mpc Film (the dark horse winner) for VFX. Ironically, though, Mpc’s win overshadowed its own innovative virtual production and photoreal animation on Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” Yet this supporting visual effects work played an integral role in making stitches invisible and creating CG environments (including No Man’s Land and the burning village of Écoust).
Meanwhile, Pixar won its 10th animated feature Oscar for “Toy Story 4,” and “Hair Love,” the black father-daughter bonding work, took home the animated short Oscar.

The team that created 1969 Los Angeles for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took home the Oscar for production design Sunday at the Academy Awards.
The award marked the first win for production designer Barbara Ling and the second for set decorator Nancy Haigh, who took home an Oscar in 1992 for Bugsy.
“We share this with our incredible art department,” Ling said on stage before praising Tarantino.
Haigh then thanked the rest of the production design team. “A huge shoutout to all the people who helped put us here tonight,” she said, “the craftsmen, the construction guys, the painters, our prop master, Chris Call, and of course my gang, Mark and Sarah and Jonesy and Adam, and everybody, I appreciate it so much.”

In the last 20 years, only three Best Picture winners have also won the Oscar for Best Production Design or Art Direction. Yet there’s a very good chance that it will happen again this year. That’s because all five production design nominees are so brilliantly effective in their world building, ranging from the period pieces “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” and “Jojo Rabbit,” to the contemporary outlier, “Parasite.”
All five possess the two most important aspects of successful production design: innovation and story support, while, at the same time, dazzling us with period detail, cultural authenticity, and iconic style.
Without a doubt, though, the frontrunner is Dennis Gassner’s masterful work on Sam Mendes’ continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, “1917,” which has grabbed momentum after its PGA and Golden Globe wins. It’s a strong season for period production design Oscar contenders, with Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, Word War I thriller, “1917,” as the frontrunner. It required production designer Dennis Gassner and the art department to make the intricate sets in precise accordance with the choreography of Roger Deakins’ tour de force camera work.
Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” masterfully explores class divide in Korea, boasting the season’s most elaborate production design work by designer Lee Ha Jun. The exquisite mansion serves as a central character; and the home’s vertical design expresses space and division, highlighted by wood, glass, and spare furniture.
Another standout is Barbara Ling’s work on Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” She provides a 50-year facelift to Hollywood Blvd. and Westwood Village for Tarantino’s 1969 love letter to Tinseltown, and recreated the creepy Spahn Ranch in the San Fernando Valley for the Manson Family lair.

It was a historic day for Korean cinema as the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced earlier today. The Critics Choice Awards recognize Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker among the year’s best in film and TV.
On the eve of the Oscar nominations, the critics have given their vote. Quite literally as the 25th Annual Critics Choice Awards is in the history books—along with its diverse selection of winning films and television shows.
The big winners of the night include Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Parasite, 1917, and Joker. The Quentin Tarantino love letter to 1960s Tinseltown notably pulled a surprise win for Best Picture after missing out on the Best Director prize. Not that Tarantino went home otherwise empty handed, as he picked up the Critics Choice for Best Original Screenplay, as did Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor, and Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh for Best Production Design.
