Berlin-based sales agency Picture Tree Intl. has picked up “Woodland” (“Wald”), written and directed by Elisabeth Scharang, which has its world premiere in the Centrepiece section at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film’s trailer has also just been launched.
Picture Tree Intl. also handled world sales on Scharang’s sophomore feature film, “Jack,” which also played at Toronto.

The film marks Scharang’s second collaboration with Dop Jörg Widmer, who is a frequent collaborator with Terrence Malick.

Official Oscar® Submission for Best Foreign Language Film from Austria: ‘Happy Ending’ by Michael Haneke“All around us, the world, and we, in its midst, blind.”The Laurent Family in ‘Happy Ending’A snapshot from the life of a bourgeois European family.
What is Michael Haneke’s vision in this film? We have seen his take on the young Adonises in Funny Games, the most devastating picture of modern sociopathology I have ever seen. And his view of the pathological origin of fascism in The White Ribbon, of the political scandal of the police mass murder and civilians turning a blind eye to the plight of Algerians in France in Cache, on sexual pathology run amock in The Piano Teacher.
Happy Ending features the best actors of a generation and of Haneke’s films, Isabelle Huppert (The Piano Teacher), Jean-Louis Trintignant who played the same character in Amour, is now shown from another angle,...

The Piano Teacher
Blu-ray
Criterion
2001 / 1:85 / Street Date September 26, 2017
Starring Isabelle Huppert, Benoît Magimel, Annie Girardot
Cinematography: Christian Berger
Film Editor: Monika Willi, Nadine Muse
Produced by Veit Heiduschka
Music: Martin Achenbach
Directed by Michael Haneke
Her serene face a fragile mask just waiting to crack along with her sanity, the tortured spinster at the center of The Piano Teacher is a Blanche Dubois for the S&M set.
Her name is Erika Kohut, a brilliant but merciless tutor entrenched in a swank Viennese conservatory where she brings a surgical precision to her teaching (while leaving the anesthesia at home). She’s a harsh mistress, no doubt, but she’s merely assumed the mantle of her mother, a clinging horrorshow who monitors her middle-aged daughter’s every move while provoking nightly brawls that begin in the living room and end in the bedroom; a sick parody of a bad marriage.

Beloved Sisters producer Uschi Reich on Dominik Graf at the New York Film Festival: "It was very important for Dominik to work with the language." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Dominik Graf's Beloved Sisters (Die Geliebten Schwestern) starring Florian Stetter, Henriette Confurius and Hannah Herzsprung alongside Claudia Messner, Ronald Zehrfeld, Michael Wittenborn, Maja Maranow and Andreas Pietschmann, sharply re-invents the costume drama with an historical fiction centered around the ménage-à-trois love story between writer Friedrich Schiller (Stetter) and the sisters Caroline (Herzsprung) and Charlotte (Confurius) von Lengefeld.
I met up with producer Uschi Reich during the New York Film Festival to discuss her role in bringing the story to the screen. Films by Todd Solondz, Ralph Fiennes and Andrei Konchalovsky as well as an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s White Nights, starring Daniel Brühl, are among 12 projects to be supported by Russia’s Ministry of Culture this year.
Solondz, Fiennes and Bekmambetov are set to join director colleagues Avdotya Smirnova, Bakur Bakuradze, Cedric Klapisch, Igor Voloshin, Ilmar Raag and Sam Rockwell in shooting episodes of the omnibus film Petersburg: A Category Of Feelings.
The project, which is to be produced by Lenfilm Studio in cooperation with Sergey Selyanov’s St Petersburg-based production powerhouse Ctb Company, will invite the filmmakers to present their views of the “Venice of the North” through emotions or qualities whose first letters make up the city’s name: Pleasure, Effort, Trust, Envy, Repose, Shrewdness, Bravery, Uncertainty, Refuge and Glee.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

Having discovered Amour is ineligible for several top gongs, director wants to give other Austrian film-makers a chance
Michael Haneke's Oscar-tipped, Palme D'Or-winning Amour may be the most high-profile film of 2012 from an Austrian film-maker, but it will not be featuring in the annual Austrian film awards. Haneke has decided not to enter his French-language drama about an elderly couple dealing with the aftermath of a devastating stroke after being told it would not be eligible for several top categories.
Amour is Austria's entry for the Academy Award for best foreign-language film, where it is expected to be one of the frontrunners. But because it is filmed in French and does not meet other required criteria (including an Austrian certificate of origin, delegate producer and evidence of "significant Austrian cultural influence") it would only have been considered for directing, screenplay and editing prizes by the Afa.

As the great and good are quickly ushered out of London's salubrious Royal Opera House, shoved into the nearest waiting limo and whisked to their respective after-show parties, the time has come to tally and take stock of the big winners at this year's British Academy Film Awards.
As with all of the major films awards of 2010 thus far, the big battle at this year's Baftas was between James Cameron's Avatar and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and the big winner on the night was Ms Bigelow who blew away all the competition with a grand total of six awards including (surprisingly but brilliantly) Best Film and Best Director. Avatar, meanwhile, was relegated to two relatively minor awards for Best Production Design and Best Special Effects.
Quite how this will affect the runners and the riders for this year's Oscars remains to be seen but it...

The nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards were announced this morning, and leading with eight each are An Education, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker. The line-up looks much like what we’ve seen in earlier awards with the obvious skew towards British-born selections like Carey Mulligan, underrated comedy In the Loop, and first time director Duncan Jones.
Notable snubs include Bright Star shut out in every category but costume, Avatar missing a spot for screenplay to The Hangover, and Sam Rockwell for Moon.
Winners will be announced February 21. Here are the nominees:

Photo: Orange British Academy Film Awards Today the nominations for the 2010 Orange British Academy Film Awards were announced and Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker lead the way with eight nominations each followed closely by District 9 with seven and Inglourious Basterds and Up In the Air each pulling in six each. The only film not amongst the nomination leaders that was nominated for Best Film is Lionsgate's Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, which did manage four nominations.
Looking over the nominations there are a few that stand out as breaking from the norm, such as Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and Lone Scherfig (An Education) both getting directorial nominations alongside James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino. Both District 9 and An Education have enjoyed plenty of love during the awards season, but this is a nice bonus that both Blomkamp and Scherfig should be proud of.

2009 was an amazing year for British film. The BAFTA longlist has James Cameron’s Avatar and Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air go up against Tarantino’s glorious Basterds and our pick of the year, Duncan Jones’ sublime Moon, we also have A Single Man and An Education showcasing a wealth of talent.

Cologne, Germany – Jacques Audiard's "A Prophet," Danny Boyle's Oscar champ "Slumdog Millionaire" and Palme d'Or winner "The White Ribbon" from Austrian director Michael Haneke are the front-runners in a crowded field at this year's European Film Awards.
Audiard's hard-hitting French prison tale, Haneke's austere black-and-white period piece and Boyle's Mumbai-based story of rags-to-riches all picked up nominations in the European film, European director, European screenwriter and European cinematographer categories.
"A Prophet" leads the pack with six nominations, including ones for star Tahar Rahim in the European actor category and an Efa Prix d'Excellence nomination for sound design.
Also in the running for best European film 2009 are Stephen Daldry's Oscar winner "The Reader," Scottish director Andrea Arnold's kitchen sink drama "Fish Tank" and Tomas Alfredson's Swedish vampire film "Let the Right One In."
Pedro Almodovar's "Broken Embraces" was shut out of the best film lineup,...

COLOGNE, Germany -- Veteran producers Margaret Menegoz of France's Les Film du Losange and Veit Heiduschka of Berlin-based Wega Film will be awarded the inaugural Prix Eurimages co-production award at this year's European Film Awards.
The prize is backed by Eurimages the EU film subsidy body, which funds European co-productions.
Menegoz and Heiduschka are among the most important players in the Byzantine world of European co-production, with more than 80 feature film credits between them.
Menegoz has produced such Art House crossover films as Angnieszka Holland's "Europa, Europa" (1990), Andrzej Wajda's "Danton" (1983) and Michael Haneke's "Hidden" (2005), the latter produced together with Heiduschka's Wega Film.
Heiduschka is best known for his work with Haneke. He has produced most of the Austrian auteur's films, including "Benny's Video" (1992), "Funny Games" (1997) and "The Piano Teacher" (2001).
Serbian director Stefan Arsenijevic, whose feature film debut "Love and Other Crimes" is a Serbian-German-Austrian-Slovanian co-production, will present the Prix Eurimages at the 20th European Film Awards on Dec. 1 in Berlin.
