In the contemporary field of Japanese animation, no one makes films and TV shows like Yuasa Masaaki. Compared to the lifelike backgrounds and careful detailing of facial animations that typify much of anime, Yuasa’s mash-ups of disciplines and methods recall the unorthodox approaches of Don Hertzfeldt and Soviet-era Hungarian animators like Marcell Jankovics and György Kovásznai. But Yuasa’s north star—in underlying motivation, if not aesthetic—may be Tex Avery, whose brand of unpredictable comedy can be seen in the filmmaker’s willingness to upend character continuity and even the fundamental outlines of drawings for the sake of pursuing a joke or feeling to its most outlandish conclusion.

Photo: 'Son of the White Mare'/Arbelos Films Directed by ambitious creative Marcell Jankovics, and in collaboration with the Hungarian National Film Institute, ‘Son of the White Mare’ (Hungarian: "Fehérlófia') is a momentous adventure of tumultuous activity and kaleidoscopic landscapes. As a viewer it is both mesmerizing and jarring to watch: visually, the colors and shapes are in constant flux and fluid transformation. The narrative is also in flux, featuring the rise and fall of characters in power. Churning with colors and mythic monsters, viewers are engaged in an unapologetic pendulum as we bob along the river of this mythological hybrid. This past spring, animation enthusiasts in the United States were supposed to be presented with a rare chance to see one of the most astoundingly beautiful, and under-seen animated features in history. Son of the White Mare (Fehérlófia), Hungarian filmmaker Marcell Jankovics’ 1981 feature, his second and most successful film internationally, was set for its first U.S theatrical run, after touring the international festival circuit last year. The features, based on multiple versions of László Arany narrative poem, fused together into a single narrative, follows Treeshaker, the youngest son of a horse goddess and his two lost brothers, Stonecrumbler and Ironkneader, as they journey to the underworld to rescue three princesses who have been imprisoned by a trio of multi-headed dragons who have taken over their homeland. The immensely colorful and psychedelic adventure was to be shown in a wonderfully done 4K restoration—a collaborative effort by L.A.-based...

"Let's see how strong you are. Pull it up by its roots." Arbelos has released a new official trailer for the 4K restoration of an underground animated classic called Son of the White Mare. Heard of it before? This psychedelic Hungarian animated movie was made by animation master Marcell Jankovics and first released in 1981. It never showed in theaters in the Us, and has only appeared at various film festivals or in bootleg form. The film has been restored in 4K using the original 35mm camera negative and sound elements by Arbelos in collaboration with the Hungarian Film Archive. A goddess in the shape of a horse gives birth to three super-powered sons who set out on a mission to save three princesses from three evil dragons and reclaim their kingdom from the underworld. The film acts as trippy visual commentary on pollution and humanity's destruction of ...

For the fifth year running, Lyon’s Lumière Festival will honor Hungarian cinema and invite guests of the Hungarian National Film Fund to present two classic Hungarian films from important national filmmakers, Márta Mészáros’ “Ők ketten” (“Women”) and Zoltán Fábri’s “Fifth Seal.”
Both films will be presented by Lumière Festival special guest Marina Vlady on Oct 18.
It’s a treat for the Hungarian National Film Fund, coming just one month after hosting their own retrospective film festival, the Budapest Classics Film Marathon. This year’s event saw 100 films screen over seven days with more than 17,000 spectators attending.
1977’s “Women” stars popular Hungarian actors Lili Monori and Golden Globe-nominated Marina Vlady (“The Conjugal Bed”) with an appearance from Vladimir Visotski (“The Duel”). The story turns on two women, Juli and Mari, who are each experiencing marital crisis. Their problems bring the two together in an attempt to help one another put their lives back together.

Why Watch? This quite short but still entirely provocative short won the Short Film Palme d’Or at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival. It’s the work of animator Marcell Jankovics, whose prior short Sisyphus was nominated for an Oscar in 1974 (and later used in a Super Bowl commercial for Gmc). Jankovics has been called the “Walt Disney of Hungary,” which has everything to do with his place in cultural consciousness and much less to do with his actual work. Küzdők is a very brief film with awfully grand things to say. It’s a vignette of a sculptor who is quite literally destroyed by his greatest work, which comes to life while he carves. Creator and creation are both armed with chisels and chip away at each other. As the artwork becomes young, strong and beautiful, the artist ages into a withered nothingness. The whole thing is perfectly textured, capturing all of the roughness of untamed rock...
