The summer of ’84 was golden. The Summer Olympics and the Olympics Arts Festival transformed host city Los Angeles into an athletic and artistic mecca. Bruce Springsteen was burning up arenas with his “Born in the USA” tour. Geraldine Ferraro made history when she was named Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale’s running mate making her the first woman to be part of a major party’s national ticket.
And the quirky horror comedy “Ghostbusters” was scaring up big bucks at the box office. Taking in in nearly $300 million, it was the No. 1 film of the year. Directed by the late Ivan Reitman “Ghostbusters” starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis and Annie Potts and revolved around a group of parapsychologists who open a ghost removal service in New York City. Call me old-fashioned but there is nothing like the soothing sound of a floppy disk drives grinding. Maybe that's why I find this latest composition by Paweł Zadrożniak on his Floppotron, a musical instrument built from 64 floppy disk drives. His latest work hits the Ghostbusters theme song out of the park. And does so just in time for Halloween.
Ray Parker Jr’s original theme is well suited by the ancient computer sounds seeing that Ghostbusters was born and thrived in the 80s.
So if "bustin' makes you feel good" you might want to consider adding this cover of the cinematic classic to your Halloween playlist. Watch the video below:...

As we informed you earlier today, the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 will be available for Lyft rides in select cities this Friday and Saturday. I got a peek at the experience today, taking a ride around Downtown Los Angeles. Tagging along with me were my friend Nicholas and Luke Greenwood of Lyft’s Brand Team. We Facebook Live streamed it so you could all join us. Our ride was in the actual Ecto-1 featured in the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, a 1984 Cadillac DeVille hearse (in the original, Venkman et al. drove a 1959 Cadillac ambulance). Lyft will have two Ecto-1 cars available in each participating city — New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, and Washington D.C. — most of which will be replicas made by Cunning Communications Inc. and Motor Media USA. You won’t be able to have the Ecto-1 take you wherever you please, as Lyft wants to make sure as...

Ray Parker, Jr. got his groove on in the music video for his classic Ghostbusters theme song. But it’s nothing like the way the quartet of comediennes dance their hearts out in the newly released Japanese version of the song. The new cover and accompanying music video features comedians Tomochika, Oniyakko Tsubaki, Naomi Watanabe, and Shizuyo Yamasaki donning their jumpsuits and proton packs in a neon landscape inspired by the original 1984 music video. The synth-powered sound of this cover is also a lot closer to Parker’s track than cover unveiled stateside last week. Sony deserves kudos for trying to deliver something different with that Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliott cover rather than a carbon copy of the original. But I bet this Japanese version will be much more of a fan pleaser than Fall Out Boy’s over-produced track that insisted on choking the silly fun out...

The Ghostbusters reboot comes with a rebooted theme song, natch. Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliott teamed up for "Ghostbusters (I'm Not Afraid)," inspired by Ray Parker, Jr.'s original, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984. Parker's theme was nominated for the Best Original Song at the 57th Annual Academy Awards, but it lost to Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from Gene Wilder's movie The Woman in Red. The boys of Fall Out Boy— drummer Andy Hurley, vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, guitarist Joe Trohman and bassist Pete Wentz—put their own rock 'n roll spin on the track, while Elliott gives it some hip-hop flavor. Wentz tweeted...

They ain't afraid of no ghosts! Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig made beautiful music together on a recent visit to the The Graham Norton Show while promoting their highly anticipated Ghostbusters reboot. Egged on by the film's director Paul Feig and their costars Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, McCarthy and Wigg performed what Feig described as a "folk lady version" of the franchise's classic Ray Parker Jr.-theme. The cover was as the idea of McCarthy, 45, and Wiig, 42, who, Feig joked, came up with he song as a way to "really enrage men" who complained that their favorite movie was...

June’s home entertainment releases are kicking off in grand fashion this week, as horror and sci-fi fans have a lot to look forward to with the new arrivals on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. Scream Factory is keeping busy with a double dose of terror with their releases of The Abandoned (in conjunction with IFC Midnight) and The Funhouse Massacre, and for those of you who may have missed the supernatural thriller in theaters earlier this year, The Other Side of the Door is making its way to both Blu and DVD courtesy of 20th Century Fox.
If you consider yourself something of a Star Trek fan, Paramount is distributing the Director’s Cut of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan on Blu-ray this week as well as the complete run of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which arrives on Blu for the first time ever this Tuesday.

The forthcoming Ghostbusters reboot is also getting a tie-in videogame. Here's the first trailer...
Remember that Zx Spectrum Ghostbusters game, where you had to sit through a three-minute, unskippable 8-bit rendition of Ray Parker Jr's theme tune before you could actually do anything? This doesn't have much to do with Activision's new Ghostbusters outing. We just wondered whether anyone else could remember back that far.
Anyway, Sony's bringing out its all-new, Paul Feig-helmed Ghostbusters movie this summer, and Activision's bringing out a tie-in game to celebrate. It's a top-down co-op game that appears to be of the twin-stick variety, though it's difficult to tell from the first trailer because it's so brief. It doesn't look like it's of the depth of 2009's Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which served as an official follow-up to the movies, but it could still offer a few hours of knock-about,...

The Ray Parker Jr.-performed Ghostbusters theme song is just as iconic as proton packs and tan jumpsuits in the horror-comedy franchise . but there has been some question in the fan community as to how it would be used in director Paul Feig.s upcoming reboot. The opening of the track . played on a lone piano . can be heard in the newly released trailer, but audiences are still wondering if the original music will make its way into the actual finished film. Well, wonder no longer, because Feig has confirmed that we will not only be hearing the Parker Jr. version, but others as well. A special Ghostbusters event was held earlier this week on the Sony Pictures studio lot in Los Angeles, CA, and following an early screening of the new trailer, Paul Feig, co-writer Katie Dippold, and producer Ivan Reitman were on-hand for a question and answer session.

Never shit can a movie before you see the whole thing, right? Wrong! Besides a nice new shiny Ghostbusters logo, and a remix of the original Ray Parker Jr song, this looks unoriginal (a ghost in a library, seriously Paul Feig, Seriously), unfunny and the cast look like they have as much chemistry together as you and me. But, hey, at least Slimer is in there. Released: July 15th...

A sequel to Paul Feig's Ghostbusters movie is set to be given the greenlight by Sony...
Ghostbusters finally opened in America this past weekend, notching up a $46m opening weekend that's somewhere in the middle of what was being aimed for. Sony, meanwhile, has been quick to confirm that we're set to meet Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig's Ghostbusters again.
“I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise,” Sony's chief of worldwide distribution, Rory Bruer told The Wrap. “While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen", he said. It's unclear as of yet if Feig will return, once Sony hits the greenlight button.

Songs On Screen: All week HitFix will be featuring tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out all the entries in the series here. When we talk about underrated directors, it's hard not to mention Walter Hill. Hill is an underrated director, the way Michael Ritchie and Peter Yates were underrated directors, the way Roger Donaldson, Joe Dante, and Fred Schepisi are underrated directors. They’re all underrated because it’s only when you look at their filmographies that the numbers start to total up and you realize, boy, he directed a lot of really good movies. In Hill’s case, that list includes "The Warriors," "48 Hours," "The Long Riders," "Southern Comfort,: "Hard Times," "Trespass," and "Wild Bill." Some great. Some solid. (My personal favorite of those is Hard Times, a pulpy film about bare-knuckle boxers in the Great Depression.) There were clunkers...

“It just… popped in there.” says Ray Stantz, as played by Dan Aykroyd in the climax of the ’80s classic movie Ghostbusters. An inter-dimensional super-villain named Zuul has started to breach the worldly barriers, and ghosts are appearing in 1980s New York City. These ghosts aren’t friendly. They’re decidedly unfriendly. In fact, they’re generally causing a scene. Cue the Ghostbusters, a rag-tag bunch of college layabouts who discover the secret to catching said spirits, and more importantly, a way to monetize their capture. That’s capitalism, folks.
Zuul, as it happens, is just a minion for a millennia old God named Gozer the Destructor, and (s)he instructs the ‘Busters to choose a form for Gozer to take when he arrives to lay waste to their city. Whatever they think of, that’s what will come to destroy them. And so, our heroes attempt to clear their minds of all thoughts.

A few weeks back we told you about Sony's intention to give a fully restored version of Ghostbusters a limited theatrical run to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Now they have released a trailer for this upcoming event, and while there is nothing "new" in the trailer it looks fantastic (unlike the first Ghostbusters Blu-ray release a few years ago).
Following the one week run, on September 16th, a new collector’s edition Blu-ray set of the 1st and 2nd movie will go sale. Both films are new 4k transfers, so they will look better than you have likely ever seen them. And of course there will be special features:
Ghostbusters Blu-ray Special Features:
- New! Who You Gonna Call: A Ghostbusters Retrospective - Roundtable Discussion with Director Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd (Part 1)
- New! Poster Art Gallery – Gallery 1988 artwork
- New! “Ghostbusters” Music Video – Ray Parker, Jr.

Every movie has to have its signature song and that certainly goes for the action-oriented males in film that are fortunate to have these finger-snapping tunes represent them on the big screen. The movie theme song indulges the audience and delivers a whole new kind of intrigue and feeling that we invest in the roguish ruffians on the big screen that some men would like to emulate and the ladies would love to cozy up to intimately.
There are music selections that do bring to mind the euphoria of the male action-packed characters we regard highly despite their moral compass. Maybe one can get excitable when hearing Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” tune for the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name? Perhaps any of the musical themes for the countless James Bond films tickle your fancy? (there are two included in this article incidentally). Your preference might be in...

Ghostbusters, the comedy classic that spawned a hit single, a sequel, a cartoon series and inspiration for countless fancy dress parties, celebrates its 30th anniversary today (June 8).
While we patiently wait for the long-in-development Ghostbusters 3, here are 30 things you may or may not now about the 1984 movie.
1. In the early '80s, Dan Aykroyd read an article on quantum physics and parapsychology in The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research. That, coupled with his family's long-standing interest in the paranormal, served as the catalyst for Ghostbusters.
2. Speaking of Aykroyd's family, his great grandfather was a psychic investigator, his grandfather an engineer who created a high-vibration crystal radio to contact the spirit world and his father kept a substantial library of books on the paranormal.
3. The first script drafts of Ghostbusters focused on three characters who battled ghouls with wands instead of proton packs, while the action took...

While the future of Ghostbusters may not be clear, nothing can take away from the greatness that is the first film. I vividly remember seeing the movie in the theater and being really freaked out by Sigourney Weaver levitating over the bed and I loved it.
That entire summer, the logo was everywhere. I mean you couldn’t go past an airbrush or iron on t-shirt vendor along the boardwalk without seeing something Ghostbusters related.
Now, airbrush t-shirts may not be coming back this summer but the film will be. To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Sony will be re-releasing Ghostbusters on 700 screens this August 29th.

This Sunday marks the 30th anniversary of the classic supernatural action-comedy "Ghostbusters," which hit theaters on Friday June 8th, 1984. One of the most beloved films of its generation, the Ivan Reitman-directed movie is remembered for its sharp, funny, tight script (co-written by the late Harold Ramis), still-superb visual effects, great performances from the likes of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson and Ramis, and being a rare example of the successful blend of blockbuster fantasy and comedy. It's also, for better or worse, remembered for Ray Parker Jr's iconic theme tune, a smash-hit at the time, which earned an Oscar nomination. We're in an era where the movie theme song is something of a dead art (though the recent success of "Skyfall" and "Let It Go" from "Frozen" might see that change), but in the 1980s, it was in its prime, and many of the decade's biggest...

Who says you can't have eyes for your ex? Richie Sambora couldn't keep from gushing about his ex-wife Heather Locklear while celebrating his friend Ray Parker Jr.'s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday. Though divorced since 2007, the Melrose Place alum, 52 and her Bon Jovi guitarist ex, 54, remain very close. "We're better friends now than ever," said Sambora, who is proud of the fact that he and Locklear put their differences aside to focus on...

Everyone seems just as pumped for the Jay-z-produced soundtrack for "The Great Gatsby" as they are for the flick itself. But before we look ahead at what The Hova has in store for what we can only imagine will be the coolest-ever soundtrack to something you were forced to read in high school, let's look back at some of the all-time great movie songs.
Feature by Adam D'Arpino
20. Three 6 Mafia: 'Hard Out Here For a Pimp' ('Hustle & Flow')
Three 6 Mafia took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for this jam that confirmed what we had all already suspected: Pimpin' ain't easy. Terrence Howard and Taryn Manning's performances in "Hustle & Flow" were stellar, but there's little doubt that Three 6 Mafia's Oscar appearance, combined with host Jon Stewart's verbal Oscar tally ("Three 6 Mafia 1, Martin Scorcese 0") is what everyone remembers most about the movie.

Remember 1984’s “GhostSmashers” aka “GhostStoppers”? Of course you do. With a star-studded cast featuring John Belushi (Peter Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Jeff Goldblum (Egon Spengler), Eddie Murphy (Winston Zeddemore), John Candy (Louis), Sandra Bernhard (Janine) and Paul Reubens (Ivo Shandar/Gozer), the future-set supernatural comedy in which roving teams of ghost catchers protect humanity from the supernatural, directed by Ivan Reitman, cost a whopping $300 million to make, featured hundreds of monsters, including a giant marshmallow man, and spawned not one but two sequels; the second of which got smoothly underway recently with the full, gracious participation of all of the original cast.
Ok, all of that happened in a parallel universe, where casting decisions went the other way, Dan Aykroyd’s original script got the green light, where perhaps dogs and cats live together in mass hysteria...but we got “Ghostbusters” instead. We wouldn't trade.

They year was 1984. Steve Jobs was young, "Ghostbusters" was huge and Ibm bigger than Apple.
Sometime that year the streams were crossed and Apple spoofed "Ghostbusters" in it's parody music video "Bluebusters", intended as an internal promotional "Hoo-Rah!" rallying cry in which Apple defeats the global domination aspirations of "Blue," otherwise known as Ibm.
As Paul McNamara of Network World points out, "It was clear that the metaphor of Apple as the liberator of the office worker wasn't confined to the famous 1984 commercial."
As prophetic as the theme of this video has turned out to be, we can't help but smile a bit at a young Jobs decked out in a Macintosh-inspired Ghostbusters Uniform. He looks nothing like Bill Murray, but uncannily like Harold Ramis.
Jobs:
Here's Harold Ramis:
Aside from a resemblance to Ramis, Jobs doesn't make much more of a splash in the 4:20 long video. And yes,...

How best to celebrate the arrival of the fifth month, PopWatchers? Lacking a May pole in EW’s office, I decided to turn to pop culture. Though I considered expanding the net to include non-traditional picks like bunkin’ cousin Maeby Fünke from Arrested Development and Ghost’s Oda Mae Brown (“Molly, you in danger, girl!”), there was plenty of May love to go around without getting Fünke with it. Below, five of my favorite May touchstones.

Tintin fans are getting excited for the animated movie “The Adventures of Tintin.” James Curran of SlimJim Studios created an unofficial title sequence for the film. He used elements featured from each of the 24 Tintin books. The music is composed by Ray Parker and Tom Szczesniak. Even one of Tintin’s writers took notice. “So @slimjimstudios does unofficial #Tintin titles vimeo.com/30402976, Spielberg sees ‘em, give him invite to prem & job on next movie…” tweeted Edgar Wright over the weekend. Well, Curran certainly gained a fan. The story is about Tintin, an intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure. The animation voice cast includes Jamie Bell (“Billy Elliot,” “Jumper”), Andy Serkis (“The Lord of the Rings” “The Prestige”), Daniel Craig (“Casino Royale,” “Munich”), Simon Pegg (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”), Nick Frost (“Paul,” “Pirate Radio”), Gad Elmaleh (“Priceless,...

It's made by James Curran (via Vimeo) and is an "unofficial" title sequence that features elements from each of the 24 books, using music from the TV series by Ray Parker & Tom Szczesniak. If you didn't already hear, Tintin is also getting some rave reviews out of the UK, including one from Empire and a few others from the trades. Our friends at Awards Daily also have the best quotes pulled from Empire and Variety/Hollywood Reporter, who've called it a "visually dazzling adaptation" with "immense sensitivity" and a "delirium of creativity." Everyone remembers Ray Parker, Jr.’s classic “Ghostbusters” theme song. But how many of you remember Run Dmc’s “Ghostbusters Rap” from the ill-advised sequel? If ever there ever was an argument against not making a third Ghostbusters, this embarrassing music video is it.

Last week, TMZ cornered a beleagured looking Ernie Hudson on the street to ask him about reprising a character he last played over twenty years ago. Much to the chagrin of the internet as a whole, the actor stated that he has yet to receive any kind of official offer to join the cast of the rumored Ghostbusters III, meaning that we're no closer to watching a group of four middle-aged men fight CGI ghosts and most likely drop some inside references to a couple of movies we used to really like.
Apparently, Hudson is just like a way richer version of the rest of us, as he's heard all of the same rumors and tidbits. We like to imagine that after hearing each one, whether it's the fact that Ivan Reitman is interested in directing, or that Dan Akroyd loves the script, the actor loudly announces to the long-suffering Mrs.

…tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might-or must-exist in the hereafter.

Top Cow is adding a new miniseries to its roster of offbeat stories starting April 13, 2011 with Netherworld, from writers Bryan Edward Hill and Rob Levin, as well as illustrator Tony Shasteen and colorist Jd Mettler.
Netherworld tells the story of one long night in a city following private detective Ray Parker as he searches for an 18-year-old girl named Madeline. The story promises to be dark and feature deep, layered characters. The city itself is seedy and full of criminals, and other unsavory types. If there’s good in this city we aren’t likely to see much of it along Parker’s path.
The writers take great inspiration from Frank Miller’s Sin City. While that world was the inspiration for the writers, Shasteen believes only Miller could create that particular city. He instead goes for something much more realistic and akin to films such as Se7en and Blade Runner.
