“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.
Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.
These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) has revealed the nominees for its annual Muahs Awards, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 leading the feature competition with four nominations and Maestro close behind with three noms.
Disney/Marvel’s Guardians 3 earned noms in the categories for contemporary makeup, period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hairstyling and special makeup effects. Bradley Cooper’s Netflix Leonard Bernstein drama Maestro collected noms for period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hair styling and special makeup effects.
The Muahs Guild’s feature nominees vary quite bit from this season’s Oscar shortlist for the category. In fact, Guardians 3 was already snubbed in the makeup and hairstyling Oscar race, failing to make the shortlist of 10 films that advanced to the upcoming branch bake-off.

Transforming actors into well-known figures such as Tammy Wynette and Princess Diana was a challenge for artisans, who experimented with techniques to come up with hair and makeup that would look authentic to viewers.
Cate Hall spent hours with Elizabeth Debicki while recreating Princess Diana’s sophisticated coiffure from the early 1990s for Season 5 of “The Crown.” Through a series of incremental adjustments to the wig — and plenty of patience from Debicki – Hall got the look she desired.
“You hold one another’s hand as you keep slicing the wig with a razor and inching towards a shape that feels recognizable,” she recalls of her collaboration with Debicki.
Hall admits that in her first attempt at the wig, Debicki looked more like a “lady called Brenda from 1983” than the glamorous royal. But she kept working on it.

It’s happened five times in the last 11 years (including three years in a row) that an acting winner has has also carried along the hair/makeup team for triumphs at the Academy Awards, a trend that Brendan Fraser and the makeup/prosthetics team from “The Whale” (headed by Judy Chin) hope to continue this year. To be sure, the transformation of Fraser into a 600-pound man proved a visually stunning on-camera masterwork, and it would surprise few if the actor and the team in charge of his radically altered appearance were both to be honored with Oscar hardware.
Most recently, Jessica Chastain won the lead actress prize for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” at last year’s Oscars, while the makeup/hairstyling trophy went to that film’s Stephanie Ingram, Linda Dowds and Justin Raleigh for helping transform Chastain into Tammy Faye Bakker.

James Wan is unquestionably one of our true modern horror masters, as the man behind "Saw," "Insidious," and the shepherd of "The Conjuring" universe. The man has several huge franchises under his belt and, not for nothing, is probably responsible for the most reliable cinematic universe outside of Marvel. One of his biggest hits to date is "The Conjuring 2," a rare sequel that lived up to its predecessor.
Many horror fans remember the follow-up for introducing the demon nun Valak, played by Bonnie Aarons. But Wan's original plans for the movie's big demon were radically different. While the filmmaker had talked about these plans in the past, he's now offered a pretty incredible look at what could have been.

When they started working on “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” makeup department head Robin Beauchesne and prosthetics designer Justin Raleigh both found themselves having to look up a lot of information. “A lot of research goes into it, watching a lot of documentaries, talking within the department and figuring out all the different ways that we can do it and also talking to the actors and seeing how they feel and how far they want to go,” Beauchesne tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Raleigh emphasized that they also needed to be mindful of how long it would take to get in and out of the makeup, especially for someone like Sarah Paulson. “She was in that makeup well over a hundred times, so we had to make sure that this was a very efficient process from prosthetics to hair to Robin. Exclusive: UTA has signed almost a dozen senior production figures to its Production Arts division in the wake of the Oscar telecast snub to several major categories, including those who’ve worked on Dune, You and Bombshell.
The likes of Oscar-winning Dune VFX supervisor duo Brian Conner and Tristan Myles have been snapped up in the past few weeks alongside Bombshell hair designer Anne Morgan, Kings Man producer David Reid and Pennyworth/You exec producer Matthew Patnick.
UTA clients won four Oscars this year including The Eyes of Tammy Faye’s Justin Raleigh for Makeup and Hairstyling, Dune’s Greig Fraser for Best Cinematography and the same film’s Patrice Vermette for Achievement in Production Design. Many were influenced by UTA-repped Paul Lambert, the Oscar-winning Dune visual effects supervisor, to join UTA, according to the agency.

Jessica Chastain’s eyes filled with tears at last night’s Oscars long before she won Best Actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” When Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram and Justin Raleigh won Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the camera showed Chastain looking overwhelmed and mouthing the words “I love you.”
In the days leading up to the Oscars, Chastain had said that she would skip the red carpet if necessary so she could be in the Dolby Theater when the Makeup and Hairstyling award were announced. Two-and-a-half hours into the Oscars broadcast, the energy at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ London viewing party was dipping. With the U.K. eight hours ahead of L.A, the time was coming up to 3:30 a.m. and even the steady stream of champagne, espresso martinis and miniature bangers and mash couldn’t quell the groans inside the Claridges hotel ballroom when, on the screens dotted around us, an ABC voiceover promised we were entering “our final exciting hour” of the ceremony.
“Another hour?” someone moaned and, to be fair, I could see where they were coming from even though I was having a grand old time. (It’s not every day I get to wear a ballgown to watch TV and eat donuts surrounded by giant Oscar statues.)
Little did we know, ABC was legitimately going to deliver on that promise of a “final exciting hour.

Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

“Dune” cinematographer Greig Fraser and editor Joe Walker were among those who spoke out about the Academy’s decision to cut eight categories from the live telecast at Sunday’s Oscars.
Earlier this week, dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers signed a petition challenging the move to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday. As threatened, guild members wore their badges upside down as a form of silent protest.
In the press room after winning the cinematography Oscar, Fraser, whose category was shown in main part of the show, said, “Everybody in this crowd realizes why this happens, we understand the economics. I just want my particular collaborators, the production design, editing, makeup and hair people to be equally rewarded for their jobs.”
Walker, who won for editing “Dune,” said, “I feel strongly that that was a disservice to our eight categories that were not televised live.

Women at the 94th Academy Awards won 10 of the 43 individual Oscar statuettes handed out on Sunday night, the worst showing for female winners since the 2018 Academy Awards.
That’s 23% of the overall individual winners across the Oscars’ 23 competitive categories, bolstered by wins for Best Director Jane Campion, as well as others for Sian Heder for Best Adapted Screenplay and Billie Eilish for Best Original Song. This tally, however, does not include the International Feature category, which is awarded to the film’s country of origin — in this case, Japan for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car.”
That total was a drop from last year when we saw Chloé Zhao win Best Director for “Nomadland,” just the second woman to ever do so, as well as Emerald Fennell picking up Best Original Screenplay for “Promising Young Woman.” Their wins in 2021 helped women secure 17 wins out of 47 individual winners from the 23 competitive categories,...

It was a “Dune” crafts celebration Sunday at the Oscars, with Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi powerhouse from Warner Bros. grabbing six out of eight wins for cinematography, production design, editing, original score, sound, and visual effects.
“Dune” was the big screen event of the season, ushering in the reopening of theaters after the pandemic with its heady mix of politics and religion wrapped around a hero’s journey in the desert. It only came up short in costume design and makeup and hairstyling, where it got overshadowed by three-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven’s ’70’s punk look for Emma Stone in “Cruella” (Disney), and the transformation of Best Actress winner Jessica Chastain into the infamous televangelist for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures).

Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram and Justin Raleigh Win At The 2022 Oscars For Best Makeup, Hairstyling
The makeup and hairstyling team for The Eyes of Tammy Faye — Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram and Justin Raleigh — have taken the Oscar in the category. Dowds acted as the makeup department head, Raleigh was in charge of special makeup effects, and Ingram was head of the hair department. This is the first Oscar nomination and win for the three.
The trio emerged victorious for the epic, garish, and very 80s transformation of actress Jessica Chastain into the infamous televangelist Tammy Faye Baker, and styling the cast to look authentic to the time period the story takes place in. The three were considered the front-runners, the film having won for makeup and hair at the BAFTA Awards. They had some tough competition against the work in films like Dune, House of Gucci, Cruella, and Coming to America.

Powerhouse “Dune” (Warner Bros.) took the early lead, grabbing four out of five craft Oscars after the controversial pre-taped ceremony of eight categories an hour before the ABC broadcast at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. They were presented by “Dune” co-stars Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa in an unprecedented move to tighten the show and boost sagging ratings, and will appear in an edited version throughout the broadcast.
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune” won editing, production design, original score, and sound. However, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures) took makeup/hairstyling for the impressive transformation of Best Actress favorite Jessica Chastain as the infamous televangelist. There is something perfect about Tammy Faye Bakker’s notorious cosmetic stylings leading to Oscar recognition. At the height of the late Christian televangelist’s 1980s fame, her dramatic mask of makeup — elephant-thick lashes, painterly eye shadow, very big hair — was lampooned across the media, from tabloids to late-night comedy shows. But the relentless jokes never seemed to faze Bakker. On the contrary, she loved her over-the-top-look and remained so committed to it that she made much of it permanent by tattooing her brows, eye-liner and lip-liner. She seemed so proud of her look that it’s easy to imagine her responding to the Oscar nominations of the people who recreated it in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” with a full-hearted “Hallelujah!”

Ever since Searchlight Pictures released stills of Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” audiences were captivated by her transformation, and now, the hair and makeup team, along with Chastain, are all in the running for Oscar. The goal of makeup department head Linda Dowds, hair department head Stephanie Ingram and special makeup effects artist Justin Raleigh was not to make a caricature of the famous televangelist but create a real person.
Raleigh’s process began with 2D conceptual designs combining the real Tammy Faye Bakker with Chastain to figure out the elements that had to be altered with prosthetics. “From those 2D designs, we then went into clay sculptures over Andrew [Garfield, who plays Jim Bakker] and Jessica’s life casts. From those sculptures, we molded and created several prosthetic variations to test in each of our three major prosthetic stages related to their weights gains and age requirements based on the scripted timeline.

Jessica Chastain is standing by her makeup man (and women). The Best Actress front-runner for her starring role in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” appeared on The Next Best Picture Podcast this week and stated that she will “absolutely be present when the makeup team [and] the makeup category is being called. And if that means I’m not doing press on the red carpet, or ABC, or whatever it is, then so be it.”
In case you are just tuning in, this is all to do with the academy’s controversial decision to excise eight categories from its live telecast this year. Among those categories is Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the trophy for which has a strong shot of going to the “Eyes of Tammy Faye” team of Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram, and Justin Raleigh. (The film just won in the category at the BAFTA Awards and Critics Choice Awards.

“Dune” was the big winner at the 2022 BAFTAs with five wins in the craft categories. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won the coveted best film BAFTA and best director.
However, Campion could not be present at the awards, and her lead Benedict Cumberbatch collected the award on her behalf. Another notable absentee was Will Smith, who won best actor for “King Richard.” Both Campion and Smith were in Los Angeles attending the Critics Choice Awards, where they also won.
The evening was otherwise star-studded, with a full house at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The awards were hosted by Rebel Wilson, who was at her irreverent best. Her targets included the Royal family and 10 Downing Street.
The ongoing war in Ukraine was also acknowledged on at least three occasions during the awards evening. Wilson, while introducing Emilia Jones’ performance of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from “Coda,...

The Eyes of Tammy Faye star Jessica Chastain joined makeup department head Linda Dowds and prosthetics designer Justin Raleigh for a virtual panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees event.
Chastain stars as Tammy Faye Bakker in the biographical drama directed by Michael Showalter. The Searchlight Pictures film tracks the rise and fall of Tammy Faye’s televangelist career as she and her husband Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield) go from creating the Ptl network to Jim being arrested for felony charges of accounting fraud.
In one of the scenes from the film, Tammy Faye interviews Steve Pieters, an openly gay minister with AIDS, during a time where religious figures were against the LGBTQ+ community.
“Tammy Faye is about unconditional love and loving without judgment,” Chastain said. “I grew up in the ’80s and I remember how much homophobia and fear that there was. And for Tammy to bring someone...

Last Updated February 22: The results of the ninth annual Muahs Awards on February 20th stunned most observers with “Cruella” (Disney) “Being the Ricardos” (Amazon), and “Coming 2 America (Amazon) victorious over “Dune” (Warner Bros.) “House of Gucci” (MGM/UA) and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight/Disney). “Cruella” and “Being the Ricardos” (which isn’t an Oscar nominee) split period makeup and hairstyling, while “Coming 2 America” took contemporary makeup, hairstyling, and makeup effects.
This certainly shakes up the Oscar race, with “Cruella” now the favorite and “Coming 2 America” suddenly a stronger contender. However, period pieces tend to get greater recognition than contemporary films.
Makeup and hair designer Nadia Stacey did a bit of reverse engineering for creating Emma Stone’s ’70s punk look in the “Cruella” origin story. The idea was to work toward the eventual iconic two-toned black-and-white hairdo, black eyeshadow, liner, and red lips. Stacey...

“Coming 2 America” dominated the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 19 winning all three of its bids. The sequel to the comedy classic won both contemporary awards plus the special make-up prize. The period/character awards went to the makeup of “Cruella” and the hairstyling of “Being the Ricardos.”
This haul positions “Coming 2 America” well for the Academy Awards. In the first eight years of these guild awards, the eventual Oscar winner claimed at least one prize here first. Of its four rivals for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, only “Cruella” came away from here a winner. Both “House of Gucci” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” were bested in all three of their races while “Dune” was a two-time also-ran.

This year is all about transformations.
Stellan Skarsgard in “Dune,” Jared Leto in “House of Gucci” and Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” all required hours in the makeup chair and daily application of prosthetics for their roles.
At the other end of the scale, Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in “Spencer,” Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” Lady
Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani in “House of Gucci,” Nicole Kidman in “Being the Ricardos” and Emma Stone in “Cruella” just needed little accents from a winged liner to a straight line or the perfect bold red lip, and even gold lipstick to make subtle statements about their characters.
Here’s an insight into the transformation process.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on January 11. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, eight are vying for these precursor prizes. “House of Gucci,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “The Suicide Squad” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Cruella,” “Dune” and “No Time to Die” earned two each; and “West Side Story” has one.
Two films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley” — were snubbed by the guild. “The Suicide Squad,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” lead the ninth annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild nominations (IATSE Local 706).
“The Suicide Squad,” released last August, was nominated in special makeup effects, contemporary makeup and contemporary hairstyling.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” also landed three nominations, while “Dune” scored two nods. This bodes well for all the films which made the Oscar shortlist.
As previously announced, makeup artist Michèle Burke, known for her work on the Mission Impossible and Austin Powers franchises, and hairstylist Joy Zapata, who worked on “A Star is Born” and “Wonder Woman 1984,” will receive the 2022 Muahs Lifetime Achievement awards. The Distinguished Artisan award will be announced shortly.
The winners will be announced on Feb. 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

In order to avoid splitting votes and allow for the possibility of netting two acting nominations this year, Searchlight Pictures will campaign Andrew Garfield’s performance as televangelist Jim Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” for supporting actor consideration, based on an invite that was sent to BAFTA voters for an upcoming virtual screening of the film.
Following the biopic’s bow at the Toronto International Film Festival and modest box office receipts, its Oscar prospects have been seemingly on the fringe, but the film, directed by Michael Showalter, could make a roaring comeback during the season. Garfield’s co-star Jessica Chastain, who plays his wife Tammy Faye, will angle for lead actress, and could become a central piece of a competitive race that includes Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”).

Jessica Chastain is physically transformed in the official trailer for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” the latest directorial effort from “The Big Sick” filmmaker Michael Showalter. Chastain stars in the Searchlight Pictures-backed drama opposite Andrew Garfield, Cherry Jones, Fredric Lehne, Louis Cancelmi, Sam Jaeger, Gabriel Olds, Mark Wystrach, and Vincent D’Onofrio. With its September release date, expect “Tammy Faye” to turn up at a fall festival like TIFF and possibly factor into the upcoming awards season. Searchlight is coming off a Best Picture win for “Nomadland.”
The official synopsis for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” from Searchlight Pictures reads: “[The film] is an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall, and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and ’80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker (Garfield), rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love,...
