The indigenous peoples of Canada were thanked at every gala screening to play the Toronto International Film Festival this year. Gala screenings are starry affairs with long red carpets, held at Toronto venues like Roy Thompson Hall and the Princess of Wales Theater. This year, before audiences got to see names like Margot Robbie or Jake Gyllenhaal introduce their movies, festival executives read the following statement: “To begin, we would like to acknowledge the Mississaugas of New Credit, the Haudenosaunee and the Huron-Wendat, the original keepers of this land, for hosting us today and for hosting Tiff on their land every.

The official opening night film for the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival was “Borg/McEnroe.” Despite a unique tennis story and the kitsch factor of Shia Labeouf playing John McEnroe (perhaps a little too on the nose), the were hardly any buzz from Roy Thompson Hall which was filled mostly by festival sponsors. Instead, social media and the rest of the festival was ablaze over the Tiff premiere of “Call Me By Your Name” which earned rave reviews at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival in January (you can read mine here).

Chloe Grace Moretz and her real life counterpart lit up the red carpet at last night's Tiff premiere of Brain on Fire.
Based on the best-selling memoir, Brain on Fire tells Susannah Cahalan's story of her extremely rare and shocking autoimmune disorder. Chloe Grace Moretz effectively portrays Susannah's difficult journey as a twenty-four year old journalist whose life turns upside for down when she starts experiencing bizarre symptoms that cause her to be constantly misdiagnosed. It's a riveting story that we can't wait to see on the big screen.

Monday's aren't usually so exciting, but last night was one of the biggest nights at the Toronto International Film Festival so far, and it definitely made our blues go away.
La La Land dazzled Toronto last night, and simultaneously became an Oscar frontrunner. Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, J.K. Simmons, Rosemarie DeWitt and John Legend arrived at the Princess of Wales to introduce the Canadian premiere of the new film from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle, who was also in attendance. La La Land is an original musical that stars Gosling as a traditionalist jazz pianist, and Stone as an aspiring actress, as they struggle through their careers in Los Angeles while falling in love. We're betting on the film to win the People's Choice Award at the festival, and probably lots of Oscars.

The Toronto International Film Festival kicked off its 39th annual edition with a father-son melodrama betweenRobert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall.
The Judge premiered Thursday at Toronto's Roy Thompson Hall, opening the 10-day festival with some red carpet-ready star wattage in a prodigal son tale that plays out as a courtroom drama. Downey plays a high-price Chicago defense attorney returning to his Indiana hometown for his mother's funeral, only to be sucked into defending his judge father (Duvall), from whom he's long been estranged.
The Judge - at turns comic and weepy - is grounded by the pair of Downey and Duvall. Though veritable opposites - one a manic motor-mouth, the other terse and irascible - they have an undeniable chemistry together.
"A movie is only as good as its title character," said Downey, introducing his co-star. "The movie ... is really about a dad, and the dad has to be...

Robert Downey Jr. certainly upped the star power of the opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival Thursday with the world premiere of The Judge, the father-son relationship drama he stars in opposite Robert Duvall.

Early Tuesday morning, the Toronto International Film Festival will announce its initial wave of films for the 2014 edition of the festival. As usual, there will be a slew of films that have played at either Cannes or Sundance, a number of star-filled projects looking for distribution, some broader studio films that may or may not be awards season fodder and then, of course, the potential Oscar players. Toronto has long had to juggle landing the best premieres with Venice, but more recently has found their thunder stolen by a little festival in Colorado that actually has Academy members in attendance: Telluride. Tiff has reportedly threatened less-prestigious galas or slots after Wednesday (gasp! not after Wednesday!), but for the most part, Hollywood's studios seem to have taken it all with a collective yawn. Toronto is important, yes. What's best for each individual film's release and publicity campaign is slightly more important.

He clearly didn't want to be on the carpet and didn't want to talk to us! I think at one point I just said thank you I'm done and thank you for your time (even if stars are rude...I'm always nice). Ben really did want to work the carpet! He's always gracious and takes the time to chat! His superstar wife Jennifer Garner and Bff Matt Damon were also in town to support Ben but Matt didn't walk the carpet and Jen sprinted...

Exclusive: New funding enterprise Outsource Media Group has made itself known here at the Toronto Film Festival by acquiring North American rights to the Mike Newell-directed Great Expectations. The film, which stars Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Jeremy Irvine, and Holliday Grainger, was sold before its Gala Premiere. Partners Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley produced the film. Great Expectations premieres Tuesday at Roy Thompson Hall. Outsource Media Group will make a deal with distributors for North America, and the financier will put up P&A for theatrical releases through a fund it intends to use to build an acquisition slate of finished films and pre-buys. In other words, a new indie buyer has entered the scene. What a night! The crowd for Looper at Roy Thompson Hall was insane last night. I mean, I know there are some Bruce Willis fans in the city but wow!!! (Fyi I totally think he had powder on his head to avoid his scalp from shining; Nothing wrong with that!) Of course the ladies were screaming Joseph Gordon-Levitt's name! He was so sweet signing as many autographs as he could. Emily Blunt also walked the carpet last night with her hubby John Krasinski.
Over at the Ryerson, KStew – yes, Kristen Stewart - looked amazing in her dress. And I can eat crow today because I was convinced she definitely wouldn't talk to us on the carpet for On the Road. Wellllll, she worked it and looked amazing. It clearly was her coming out party and very well planned. She wore this see through floral frock. Absolutely gorg!

Emily Blunt may star in Looper, but it was her husband, John Krasinski, who got some of the loudest screams when they arrived at the Tiff opening night gala at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto on Thursday. Looper was the festival's big first-evening debut, and there were crowds to show the excitement. John let Emily take center stage when it came time for interviews, ducking into the theater with a smile. Emily's costars Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also stepped out looking dapper for the premiere. Jgl also moved on to introduce the film to another audience a few blocks away in the city as well. He gushed about the "lovely" Emily and jokingly called Bruce "a little indie actor you might have heard of" before taking his seat to enjoy the film with the crowd - and of course, celebrate afterwards with a party. Day One of Tiff 2012!
It is finally upon us and I’m hoping that means my "TIFFmares" are about to stop. What exactly are TIFFmares? Well...they're exactly what you'd think - nightmares that are strictly Tiff-related. They creep into my dreams mid-August, around the time I start screening films for the festival, and continue to plague me until right about now!
Let’s breakdown what happens pre-tiff. The crazy schedule starts about a month before opening night. Why? Well before you get to interview the stars at the fest, you have to have seen their film. Logical, right? Of course! But just because you've seen the movie doesn’t mean you're guaranteed a sit-down with the star. No, no, no. So you could spend 30, 40, or 100 hours watching movies but for various reasons - movie reps, publicists, time crunches, etc. - there's just no way of knowing. And when you...

Okay, folks, last night at the Festival Music House was Amazing! After heading out of Fmh I sneaked into Ame where DJ Jazzy Jeff was spinning. Yes...That DJ Jazzy Jeff. I know. Crazy.
Given the insane events of the night before, I totally slept in today. But I needed it. Not surprising really as Day 6 or 7 usually signal the beginning of the annual on-set of Tiff burn out. This year seems even worse as Tiff is really spread out all over the city. So many of my colleagues are feeling it. Back in the day and by 'day' I mean last year, all the interviews with the A-list actors took place in Yorkville and always in just 4 hotels - The Park Hyatt, Hazelton, Four Seasons and Intercontinental - and all the big red carpet events were at Roy Thompson Hall, the Elgin and Ryerson. Now with the amazing new...

Hollywoodnews.com: The Toronto International Film Festival rolls on, with first glances at such films as Paramount’s Sundance romance “Like Crazy” and the Jennifer Garner-led homespun comedy “Butter.”
The latter had its Gala screening last night at the Roy Thompson Hall, where co-star Olivia Wilde read a message from Harvey Weinstein that took pot shots at the Tea Party and presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann, whom Weinstein (with tongue in cheek) invited to the comedy’s Iowa premiere.
“We could take some math classes in the morning to help balance the budget, brush up on the Constitution in the afternoon, play some ping-pong, and then maybe some verbal ping-pong on gay rights and women’s rights (especially the right to choose),” Weinstein said in the statement.
The crowd lapped it up. But Weinstein’s missive got the evening’s biggest laughs, which isn’t great for “Butter.

Hollywoodnews.com: The Toronto International Film Festival heads into its back-half today, but that doesn’t mean the fest is slowing down. Not by any stretch.
Jennifer Garner’s ensemble comedy “Butter” has its Gala screening tonight (even though the Press & Industry screening was cancelled at the last minute). Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”) and Terrence Howard bring “Winnie” to Roy Thompson Hall Friday night. And studios continue to snatch up titles that they think will play with wider audiences.
Let’s run down a few recent news items coming out of Tiff as the festival chugs along:
- Debates are being formed in various Oscar-tracking circles about the viability of certain films that have screened at the festival and should jockey for position in the annual awards race. Brad Pitt is generating a significant amount of heat for his affable yet precise performance as Billy Beane in Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball,...

The big draws at Tiff have been the Moneyball premiere and the Ides of March Premiere. Moneyball brought Brad and Angelina, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jonah Hill and Chris Pratt (and his wife, Anna Faris).
Ides drew George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei, and Paul Giamatti. Both premieres included shrieking fans but, perhaps most interesting to me was that the person who drew the most coordinated chants of their name from the crowd? Brad? Nope. George? Nope. It was Gosling. “Ryan. Ryan. Ryan” rang out around the Roy Thompson Hall long after the red carpet had closed. The King is Dead. Long Live the King.
As we were leaving A Dangerous Method I heard the best review of the film when someone said: “It’s an intelligent, witty script about psychology and philosophy, with hot spanking scenes.” Though I was hoping for something a little more transcendent.

Two of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival’s biggest (or at least its most star-studded) gala presentations take place today: the Brad Pitt n’ baseball crowd-pleaser Moneyball and the George Clooney directed political thriller The Ides of March, starring Ryan Gosling.
Our Andrew Parker has seen both films and lets us know whether or not these celebrity-filled galas are worth the rather hefty price of admission.
Moneyball, dir. Bennett Miller
Moneyball tells the David and Goliath-like story of Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) as he attempts to draft a World Series winning baseball team on a shoestring budget. This intriguing true story makes subjects as nerdy as economics and statistics engaging exciting, while giving fans of sports films a different way of looking at a game that has appeared on screen hundreds of times before. It displays a lot of the attention to detail that marked...

Despite the glamour and glitz associated with the Tiff, there are few things more lovingly dorky than a major film festival. This doesn’t necessarily extend to people who work within the industry (the talent, the buyers, the movers, the shakers) or the people who have to deal with the industry types, but for film lovers a festival is no different than playing video games for hours on end or obsessively collecting action figures. Festivals are labours of love that require precise mathematical calculations; time management skills, accounting, navigational skils, forecasting. I defy anyone to say that attending a festival as big as Tiff is anything short of a spectator sport.
I say this all in loving jest, of course. I know there are casual film buffs who will only see a small handful of films and others who will just avoid the hoopla altogether, but it seems that with every passing year,...

Singular pleasures. When I was invited by the publicists of The Housemaid (Hanyo, 2010)--the highly anticipated remake of Kim Ki-Young's 1960 Korean classic--to interview director Im Sang-soo, I agreed to do so if they would pull me a ticket to Tiff's North American gala premiere at Roy Thompson Hall. Little did I expect that--not only would they pull me a ticket--but they would seat me in the director's box with Im Sang-soo and The Housemaid's two lead actors Jeon Do-yeon (Cannes winner for Secret Sunshine) and Lee Jung-jae. At film's end when the spotlight angled up to our section during the applause, I had to resist rising and flexing my bicep. No sense in stealing Lee Jung-jae's thunder.
It was a grounding shift from that evening's spectacular spotlight to my relaxed conversation with the convivial Im Sang-soo and his disappointingly laconic actors the following day at the Four Seasons (especially Jeon Do-yeon...
