“Fremantle is the most exciting home for world class storytelling, and coupled with Richard’s superb taste, passion for writers, and ambition for Passenger, makes it the perfect place for Caledonia to expand its TV and Film capabilities,” said Daly, while Brown added that he had been “keen to collaborate with Patrick for a long time.”

In a conversation with The New York Times promoting his upcoming Paramount release “The Lost City,” Daniel Radcliffe threw an expelliarmus in the direction of Chris Columbus. The Boy Who Lived is not particularly interested in filming an adaptation of the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”
In a recent Variety interview, the O.G. “Potter” director said that he loves the stage “Potter” sequel written by Jack Thorne (in collaboration with John Tiffany and J.K. Rowling) that is currently up in London, New York, Melbourne, San Francisco, and Hamburg, with productions in Toronto and Tokyo imminent. He noted that “the kids are actually the right age to play those roles,” and added that bringing the play to the screen is “a small fantasy.”

There hasn’t been a “Harry Potter” movie proper since 2011’s “Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” even as the spinoff series “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is well underway. But still, the beloved universe spun by J.K. Rowling continues to delight hearts and minds — and stoke the hopes of fans for a movie adaptation of the 2016 play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” The play, written by Jack Thorne with Rowling and John Tiffany providing the story, takes place 19 years after the events of the 2007 novel “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” and follows Harry Potter as the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic.
That nearly two-decade time jump means that, were a movie adaptation to take place, the original “Harry Potter” film stars Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) could technically star in the movie.

The revamped Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which will return to Broadway as a one-part play rather than the original two-part event, has announced an opening date of Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Lyric Theatre. As previously announced, preview performances will begin Friday, November 12.
The original two-part version, which opened on Broadway in 2018, ran for a total of five hours and required the purchase of separate tickets for each part. When producers announced last July that the play would return in shorter form, playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany said they had been working on the new version throughout the pandemic lockdown. “It has given us a unique opportunity to look at the play with fresh eyes and we have been inspired by the entire creative team every step of the way,” they said in a joint statement.

Forecasting the Tony Awards is never the easiest of tasks. Its 26 categories, including a plethora of technical prizes, are always ripe for upsets. Moreover, the Tony precursors, such as the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards, are often unreliable to use in making predictions, given several Tony-eligible shows will find themselves out of the running there. “The Band’s Visit,” for instance, which all but steamrolled Tony night with 10 wins, was not eligible at those two precursors this year, as it had competed at the 2017 awards for its off-Broadway staging.
Given the challenge of acing Tony predictions, I was downright flabbergasted to find myself emerging victorious on the big night, outpacing 924 fellow Gold Derby users to correctly predict the most wins of the evening – 23 of the 26 categories.

Out of all the winners (and losers) in the 26 competitive categories at the 2018 Tony Awards, several of them stand out as particularly noteworthy when considered in the context of history. So what were this year’s most interesting facts, records and milestones?
“The Band’s Visit” is the first Best Musical winner to have been based on a movie since “Kinky Boots” in 2013. Of its 11 Tony nominations it managed to win a whopping 10 awards (including Best Musical). The only prize it didn’t end up taking home was Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Scott Pask. It is now tied with “Hello, Dolly!” (1964) and “Billy Elliot” (2009) as the third most awarded production in Tony history, behind “The Producers” with 12 wins in 2001 and “Hamilton” with 11 victories in 2016.

The 72nd edition of the Tony Awards has concluded. While this continues to be one of the best produced award shows on television, some aspects of this year’s presentation were better than others. So sit back and enjoy my take on the good, bad and ugly of this year’s Tony Awards (and check out the complete list of winners here).

The Tony Awards have the best acceptance speeches of any ceremony on television. The gracious nature of so many of the winners is always a highlight, and this year brought several new favorites to the forefront:

Hosted by Tony nominees Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall June 10, the ceremony ended by crowning Itamar Moses and David Yazbek’s “The Band’s Visit” the best new musical of the 2017–18 season. Leading actress Katrina Lenk, leading actor Tony Shalhoub, supporting actor Ari’el Stachel, and director David Cromer were among the show’s impressive 10 Tony wins, more than any other musical this year. Jack Thorne’s “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two” took home best new play, triumphing over “The Children,” “Farinelli and the King,” “Junk,” and “Latin History for Morons.” The two-part spectacle, developed alongside J.K. Rowling,...

Broadway is as American as apple pie — or at least as American as the Big Apple. But this year, a lot of the nominees for Broadway’s biggest night have one thing in common: A British passport.
Of the shows nominated for best new play at the June 10 Tony Awards, three out of the five originated in London. The race for lead actor in a play is being run by four Britons and one American; the ratio’s the same in the competition for featured actress in a play. And the frontrunner for lead actress in a play? Glenda Jackson, who’s so British she used to be a member of Parliament.
There’s always been a transatlantic theater pipeline between New York and London, particularly for plays (think “Nicholas Nickleby” and “War Horse”), and the balance shifts from season to season. Last year all four new play nominees at...

This Sunday’s Drama Desk Awards could well be a preview of next Sunday’s Tony Awards on the play side with almost all of the above-the-line awards going to our predicted front-runners for the Tonys including Best Play Revival to “Angels in America.” Three of the four acting awards on the play front went to performers in revivals on the rialto: leads Andrew Garfield (“Angels in America”) and Glenda Jackson (“Three Tall Women”) and featured player Nathan Lane (“Angels in America”). All of them are tipped to take home Tonys too. Jamie Brewer won the Featured Actress award for the off-Broadway production of “Amy and the Orphans.”

Winners of the 63rd annual Drama Desk Awards were revealed on June 3 during a ceremony at the Town Hall in midtown Manhattan that was hosted once again by Michael Urie. As with the Outer Critics Circle Awards, these kudos also consider both Broadway and off-Broadway fare. To that end, the Broadway production of “The Band’s Visit” was ineligible, save for its sound design which was deemed to be new and won with these voters.

When set designer Christine Jones won a Tony for her work on “American Idiot,” she felt “there couldn’t be anything better career-wise.” Then along came “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two,” the biggest franchise title and most expensive play ever produced on Broadway, fresh from its enormously successful run in London.
And when Jones, who’s now Tony-nominated again, describes the show as “a huge undertaking,” she’s not exaggerating. Together, the two parts are more than five hours long, “with tons of locations and lots of spectacular magical moments and transformations,” she says. “But [there are] also many more personal and smaller scenes, so we needed it to be epic and also incredibly intimate. It was a very tall order.”
Other challenges included staging the monster production in the newly renovated Lyric Theatre, which reduced its massive seating capacity from 1,900 to about 1,500. “The material is so beloved by fans,...

The magic of Broadway’s Harry Potter and The Cursed Child can be as simple as a lightning-quick costume change, as startling as a bolt of fire sent blazing from a wizard’s wand and as spooky as the 100% convincing Dementors that float, wraith-like, over the audience at the Lyric Theatre.
None of it would work, of course, without the onstage magicians themselves – a cast led by the erstwhile (and grown-up) Harry himself, Jamie Parker. The British actor, who won an Olivier Award for his Potter portrayal on the London stage and is now Tony-nominated as lead actor in a play, is perhaps best known for his role as Scripps in both the play and film versions of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys.

The 2018 Tony Award nominations this morning spread the honors around, with Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants leading the field with 12 nominations apiece.
Tied with 11 nominations each were The Band’s Visit and revivals of Angels in America and Carousel. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child topped all original plays with 10 nominations.
The following is a sampling of reactions from select nominees:
Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond, Mean Girls

Harry Potter, Tina Fey, Denzel Washington, Panic! at the Disco: They could all end up sitting in the same room in six weeks, because they’re all contenders for nominations for the 2018 Tony Awards. Who’ll stand tall, and who’ll be shut out? Here are the five biggest questions about this year’s nominations, with answers set to come when nominators name their choices Tuesday morning.
1. Can any show beat “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”?
In the race for best play? Probably not. In a season that was fairly light on new plays, the sweeping two-parter “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” — beloved by critics, massively popular with audiences, and poised to run as long as “Hamilton” — is this season’s clear juggernaut. It’ll easily score a nod for best play and is already tipped to win in a category that’ll likely include “Farinelli and the King,...

Despite any attempts to the contrary, Cristin Milioti has no interest in being put into a box. In the course of her relatively brief career, she's taken on a wider variety of roles and disciplines than many actors do in decades. She's made her mark on television, in movies and onstage, playing instantly iconic (and wildly different) characters in Black Mirror, Fargo, How I Met Your Mother, and the Broadway musical Once, to name a few. Currently, she's recording her first album. And this is only the beginning.

Harry Potter defeated Voldemort, and now he’s conquered his next big challenge: Broadway.
The title character at the center of J.K. Rowling’s series of beloved novels (and subsequent films) has made his way to the Great White Way in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — an enchanting and cinematic two-part play that runs over five hours. It’s now open at the newly renovated Lyric Theatre.
Potter’s brought along with him a slew of familiar faces — including BFFs Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, wife Ginny Weasley, and former foe Draco Malfoy — as well as some surprise characters.

The “Harry Potter” novels spawned a massively successful film franchise, and now, with the April 22 opening of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the Boy Who Lived has conquered Broadway. Could there be a stage sequel on the way?
Probably not, according to J.K. Rowling, the author and creator of the Potterverse — and the co-creator of “Cursed Child,” along with director John Tiffany and playwright Jack Thorne. “I think we really have now told, in terms of moving the story forward, the story that I, in the back of my mind, wanted to tell,” Rowling said just before the day-long, multi-part opening performance of the “Cursed Child,” which focuses on the relationship between Harry and his son, Albus. “I think it’s quite obvious, in the seventh book, in the epilogue, that Albus is the character I’m moved interested in. And I think we’ve done the story justice.

Like any magic worth an incantation, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, opening on Broadway at the Lyric Theater tonight, depends on unspoiled illusions, a delight in life’s wonders and the skills to present it all as if no one had ever even considered its combinations before, much less pulled them off. I won’t spoil any illusions – the production itself handles the rest. Cursed Child is a marvel, a shape-shifting play that effortlessly incorporates music and choreographed movement, classic storytelling and fresh perspectives, a look that incorporates World War II-era Britain and Victorian spiritualism with Hollywood’s latest flash. In a Broadway season of award-worthy revivals, this tale of whatever happened to The Boy Who Lived feels bracingly, piercingly new.

This is no time for bogus expressions of sophistication. So, let’s just say: Hooray! With “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the Boy Who Lived has finally come to Broadway, bringing enchantment to a world that could really use a little magic right now.
The show’s savvy producers have done a wonderful job refurbishing the vintage Lyric Theater (circa 1903), both inside and out. The sculpture of a giant black raven’s wing hangs over the theater marquee, and the iconic image of a boy crouched in a winged nest can be seen perched on the roof. They should also have spread new pavement out front, because there’s going to be a lot of foot traffic on 43rd Street over the next few years.
Inside, the walls are painted “raven plume,” while a midnight-blue carpet is emblazoned with the Hogwarts crest. How about ravens? You want ravens? Just look up.

Imagine reading the next “Harry Potter” story before anyone else. English actor Jamie Parker doesn’t have to imagine it — he did it, back when producers were casting the West End premiere of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”
“There was a thick veil of secrecy over the entire thing, obviously,” Parker recalled on Stagecraft, Variety‘s theater podcast.
At the time, he was in Birmingham playing Sky Masterson in a production of “Guys and Dolls,” he remembered. “They said, ‘Either we bring a script to Birmingham, so there’ll be like a Securicorps guy in a helmet with a bat and a gun — not really — but basically you’d have to sit under supervision reading it. Or you come down to London.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child set a Broadway record in previews with $2,138,859 gross for the week ending April 8, pacing overall box office for the week as Tony season kicks into gear.
Even with 300 seats at every performance selling for $40 or less, the two-parter at the Lyric Theatre became the top-grossing play in Broadway history. Edward Albee won three Pulitzer Prizes over the course of his distinguished career, with two of those award-winning plays (“A Delicate Balance,” “Seascape”) bowing on Broadway during his lifetime. Surprisingly, “Three Tall Women,” the last of his Pulitzer-winning works, had never been seen on the rialto until now, as the play finally debuted with a starry production that opened at the Golden Theatre on March 29. As its title suggests, the drama boasts three formidable actresses—two-time Oscar winner and four-time Tony nominee Glenda Jackson, who returns to the Broadway stage for the first time since 1988; recent Tony winner and Oscar nominee Laurie Metcalf; and Tony nominee Alison Pill—directed by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello.
“Three Tall Women,” a semi-autobiographical depiction of Albee’s adoptive mother, centers on a nonagenarian suffering from failing health and memory (Jackson), her caretaker (Metcalf) and a representative for her attorney (Pill). The relationships established...

In 1993, two-time Tony winner and two-time Oscar nominee Tony Kushner earned the coveted Pulitzer Prize for “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches,” the first half of his celebrated magnus opus that employs realism and fantasy in its exploration of the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980s. In the first Broadway revival of Kushner’s masterwork, which opened at the Neil Simon Theatre on Mar. 25, “Millennium Approaches” gets performed in repertory with its second half, “Perestroika,” in a production helmed by Marianne Elliott that debuted at London’s National Theatre last year.
Two-time Tony winner Nathan Lane (“The Producers,” 2001; “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forums,” 1996) and Tony nominee Andrew Garfield (“Death of a Salesman,” 2012) headline this production of “Angels in America,” lending awards prestige to an already celebrated work. The original production of “Millennium Approaches” earned nine Tony nominations in 1993, winning four, while “Perestroika” earned six noms and took home three trophies.

The frequent collaborators John Tiffany and Steven Hoggett seem to be everywhere these days, not just geographically but narratively. Whether the tale they’re telling is psychological (as in the recent Broadway Glass Menagerie) or sociopolitical (Black Watch) or mytho-historical (the Alan Cumming Macbeth) or just groovy (What’s It All About?, the Burt Bacharach revue Hoggett put together) they almost always manage the difficult trick of cutting to the bone while raising the emotional temperature. To do this, they bring a certain amount of magic to their realism, as when Laura in that great Glass Menagerie made her first entrance and final exit through a kind of memory-wormhole in a sofa. But they also bring a certain amount of realism to their magic, and that’s an iffier proposition. At any rate, it’s a problem in their production of Let the Right One In, a vampire romance now at St.

Jk Rowling has reportedly chosen Tony award-winning director John Tiffany to oversee the Harry Potter West End play.
The production will focus on the boy wizard's early years and his parents' backstory, rather than a new version of the books and films, the Daily Mail reports.
In Rowling's books, Harry's parents are killed by Lord Voldemort when he is just 15 months old.
The paper claims that Tiffany is Rowling's first choice as director, after he staged the current West End version of Let the Right One In. His recent credits also include Black Watch and Once.
Writer Jack Thorne and producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender are also linked with the production.
A Warner Bros representative is quoted as saying: "We will see what we have when it's written, and proceed from there. Remember: it's a play, not a musical; so we may not require a great big theatre."
