Leo D. Sullivan, the groundbreaking Black animator who contributed to the iconic opening for Soul Train and to cartoons featuring Fat Albert, Transformers and My Little Pony during his 50-year-plus career, has died. He was 82.
Sullivan died Saturday of heart failure at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, his wife, Ethelyn, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The Emmy-winning Sullivan also was a writer, producer, director, layout artist and storyboard artist at studios including Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros., Filmation, DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, Dic Entertainment and Marvel Productions.
He and onetime Disney animator Floyd Norman were among the co-founders of Vignette Films in the 1960s. Their company produced educational films about such Black heroes as George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington and was behind a 1969 Bill Cosby special, Hey! Hey! Hey! Kenan Thompson, who is in his 17th season as a performer on Saturday Night Live, covered a wide range of show lore in a 90-minute appearance Sunday at the New Yorker Festival.
The firing of debut cast member Shane Gillis in September before his first episode and after racist jokes and comments surfaced online, reflects the current “woke times,” Thompson said. The mood has changed since the 2016 presidential election, and the job of all comedians has fundamentally shifted, he maintained. “It’s very touchy out there,” he said. “It’s interesting to see things like that happen, whatever side of the argument you’re on,” he said. “I don’t think any of us who work there go out with the intent to offend or people or hurt anyone’s feelings. Matching with that ideology, that’s the brand [show producers and NBC] want to keep alive.”

Thanks to “Persepolis,” “Waltz with Bashir” and “Chicago 10,” the blending of animation with documentaries has become a successful sub-genre. This year, it’s pushed further both thematically and stylistically with great impact.
In “Life, Animated,” the autistic Owen Suskind learned to communicate by watching classic Disney animation; in “Floyd Norman: An Animated Life,” Disney’s first African-American animator gets long overdue recognition; and in “Tower,” the use of rotoscope animation helps recreate a 50-year-old mass shooting at the University of Texas Tower.

He’s a charming character, a fascinating player in cinema history. Absolutely essential viewing for Disney fans and those interested in animated filmmaking. I’m “biast” (pro): big animation fan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

Did you know that Comic-Con awards prizes to movies? I had no idea. But it sounds like pretty much the biggest no-brainer ever that Floyd Norman: An Animated Life won Best Documentary there this year. Anyone who was a kid in the 20th century knows Norman’s work, whether they know it or not: he was an animator and/or a story creator on so many cool things that you won’t believe one man could have spread himself around so much. A very incomplete list of where you have seen Norman’s work and felt his influence: Disney’s animated features Sleeping Beauty,...

So, in the mood for another feature-length doc on the “mouse house”? I’m referring to Mickey’s home base, the cartoon factory that is the Walt Disney Studios. It’s comprehensive archives have provided terrific stories in recent years, all informative and very entertaining. Let’s see, there’s Walt & El Grupo, about the Ww II South American trip. And The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story spotlighting that song-writing duo. Oh, and Waking Sleeping Beauty, which focuses on the late 1980’s revitalization of the feature animation department, is a must see. Only a few weeks ago, audiences were moved by the story of the Suskind family in Life, Animated. Now, here’s another terrific addition to that revered roster. The talented directing team of Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkley introduce us to a fascinating man well known to the world of cartooning, but now the general public will meet...

Over the years, as the Simpsons have grown in popularity and critical acclaim, the show’s couch gags have taken on a life of their own. Running independent of the episodes, and not beholden to any kind of continuity, the couch gags have become a place for numerous individuals to put their own stamp on the Simpsons series, becoming a fertile ground for several reputed artists and animators in the process. With individuals such as Banksy, Guillermo Del Toro, and Justin Roiland leaving their mark previously, last night’s Simpsons episode saw a new entry in the form of John Kricfalusi.
Kricfalusi himself is no stranger to animation, having worked as a writer and character designer on several shows, most notably his own creation Ren and Stimpy, which followed his work on The Jetsons and Fat Albert. Kricfalusi’s couch gag can be seen below.

Co-creator of The Simpsons Sam Simon has passed away. Simon was born in 1955 and grew up in Beverly Hills. While still in college at Stanford, Simon got work as a sports cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner. Upon graduation, Simon parlayed that experience into a job working for the animation studio behind Mighty Mouse and Fat Albert. Based on the recommendation of a producer, Simon wrote a spec script for Taxi, which landed him a job on the show's staff and quickly led to him becoming the showrunner. It was on Taxi that Simon first met James L. Brooks, which would come into play a few years later, when Brooks was working with Matt Groening to turn his Simpsons cartoon into a TV series.Simon's impact on The Simpsons cannot be overstated. As co-creator and co-showrunner, he is often credited with establishing the show's sensibility...

Cary Elwes recently wowed audiences at New York Comic Con by reliving some of the on-set tales from his time filming The Princess Bride, but perhaps the funniest story was actually about his audition for the movie . It turns out the the British actor landed the part despite the fact that he performed an impression of Fat Albert during his tryout. According to Comic Book Resources, Elwes was at the hugely popular event to not only discuss the cult, comedy classic, but to also promote his new memoir, As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride. As you can probably imagine, the evening was pretty much packed to the brim with chatter that revolved around Rob Reiner.s joyous effort. But it was his comments surrounding his casting as Westley that proved to be the highlight. Elwes began by revealing that he was a huge fan...

Crown Cary Elwes the prince of BookCon — his Princess Bride panel on Saturday, a sneak peek of his upcoming book As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales From the Making of The Princess Bride (due in October), was so chock-full of stories we'd be mostly dead if we shared them all, so we're giving you a choice selection of farts, fencing, and Fat Albert: "The fart story." "What I like to call the Mighty Wind. Andre — I should start by saying he was a gentle giant, the sweetest guy ... And one day, the first day, actually, the first scene we had together, Rob [Reiner] said, 'Okay, roll cameras, action,' and I think my first words were, 'I'll fight you both together, I'll take you both apart,' but as I was saying this, an enormous, monumental fart starts to emit from Andre. It literally lasted 18 seconds. And he just...

2004 was not a very good year for movies. I.m sorry, but it had to be said. Apart from The Incredibles and Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, a case could be made that every single movie that finished in the top 10 for box office grosses was average or worse. Even the films we thought were incredible at the time, like Spider-Man 2, really don.t hold up. Roger Ebert actually said that movie was the fourth best of the year. How ridiculous does that sound in retrospect? For every Mean Girls, Anchorman, Shaun Of The Dead or Sideways, 2004 offered up a dozen or so widely released movies that were more along the lines of Mr. 3000, Alexander or Fat Albert. In the years since, we.ve pushed these films out of our brains and pretty much forgot they even existed, despite the fact that millions of dollars were spent...

Producer Lou Scheimer—a founder of the Filmation studios responsible for cartoons like Fat Albert and He-Man—has died at the age 84. Along with Disney veteran Hal Sutherland and the late Norm Prescott, Scheimer founded Filmation Associates, a production company geared to turning out animated and live-action children’s TV shows for Saturday mornings. Filmation’s cartoons, in particular, had a distinctive, readily identifiable look that was largely the result of such cost-cutting measures as rotoscoping and heavy reliance on the repeated use of stock footage. Filmation sought to compensate for the deficiencies of its animation with tie-ins to ...

Appearing at Mipcom 2013 in Cannes this week, DreamWorks Animation head Jeffrey Katzenberg says that he intends to fully exploit last year's acquisition of the Classic Media character library by Dwa.
"I think that the Classic Media library is for DreamWorks what the Marvel library was for Ike Perlmutter when he bought it for $175 million 15 years ago.
It’s not, ‘What are we going to do with those 6,100 episodes we have’ … although we’ll get value out of those … the real opportunity is to take every one of those franchises and reinvent them. And that’s what we will set out to do."

There's an amusing wistfulness to Nicole Holofcener's latest exploration of woman and love, "Enough Said." And since it co-stars the late-James Gandolfini, you can throw in a touch of melancholy, a sort of dark cloud that hangs over an otherwise light and hopeful L.A. romance among those pushing 50. Start talking about a Top Five list for anything, and I’m instantly thinking Hi-Fidelity starring John Cusack as a music store owner with exceptionally good taste who is most likely the godfather of aspiring hipsters around the turn of the century. That is not to say that I do not find common ground with Cusack in his role as Rob Gordon. His emotional outbursts and socially driven commentary concerning relationships is flowery, fun and, at times, very honest. Throughout the movie Gordon recites various Top Five lists or asks his coworkers or friends to do the same. He even creates a record label called Top Five Records. So today I’m giving you my Top Five of all time (along with my Liberal Dead brothers in arms)…
Top Five Movies To Watch During Halloween (in no particular order):
1. The Funhouse – You guys Love the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I love the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I want to make you aware of something that isn’t going to be for all of our readers though I think more of you out there will find this an interesting grab despite its contents. Mill Creek has been sending us some excellent Halloween treats available at some very reasonable prices perfect for a variety of tastes and age groups. As you may know I have a gruesome twosome of little ones at home. Let’s just say that I don’t shy away from showing them some spooky offerings especially around Halloween. My little girls, aged eleven months and eight years old, love TV, and I am making it my duty to get them into the Halloween spirit and darker cartoons and age appropriate horror. For those of you who want to get on my ass about “too much TV” for kids, I am the product of my TV; shove it.

Roseanne – Tricks & Treats from Mill Creek proves that fans of Halloween programming can have their cake and eat it too. I look forward to the Roseanne Halloween special throughout the year and not simply during October. It seems they’re always airing, the never get old and they never feel out of place. Can you say the same for the assorted Christmas Having watched them all again today, I can tell you that you may have forgotten some of the most entertaining punchlines, moments of 80′s gore and respects paid to classic horror. It’s obvious that the writers love Halloween and know how to please a horror fan. It’s also pretty apparent that Roseanne herself knows how to do Halloween right.
First, what do you get? It’s a DVD, and TV quality circa the mid 1980′s. It’s in 4:3 format and there’s no reason to see it any other way.

How seriously do you think I take Halloween? Well, I’m fairly frickin’ anal retentive anyway, so I need to book my viewing in advance. I mean I’ll deviate from my itinerary, but I at least need a plan. I can’t be the only one out there with a stick up his ass. So this October/Halloween Season I figured we needed a little guidance. There’s too many damn channels on the cable box, no horror hosts and shit for advertising. So let me be your TV Guide… Keeper.

DreamWorks Animation, which is ending its distribution deal with Paramount Pictures, has signed a five year agreement with 20th Century Fox to put out such movies as the caveman comedy The Croods, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and How to Train Your Dragon 2.
The deal marks the last vestiges of an ill-fated 2005 union between DreamWorks and Paramount, which eventually saw Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider split-off the live-action part of the studio and leave Paramount to enter a distribution deal with Disney, while Jeffrey Katzenberg maintained DreamWorks Animation as a separate entity.

Breaking bold new ground in mainstream dada-esque filmmaking, the bright yellow, pill-shaped Minions that stole so much of the 2010 animated hit Despicable Me are getting their own spin-off film, aiming for a 2014 release, EW has confirmed.
Some of you may be thinking “Whaaaa?” – the Minions have no discernible language, and their adorably antic behavior doesn’t immediately seem suited to sustain a 90-minute feature. But according to Deadline, which first broke the news, director Pierre Coffin has apparently cracked a story with writer Brian Lynch (Puss in Boots) and co-director Kyle Balda (The Lorax) that resolves these issues. (Along with Chris Renaud,...

There are dozens of pop culture references that could be used to start this story.
We could go with a Fat Albert-esque question: “Hey, hey, hey… guess who just bought a huge portfolio of classic kids’ titles?”
And answer it He-Man and She-Ra style: “DreamWorks Animation… has… The Power!”
Or there’s the Lassie route: “What’s that, girl…? A company called Classic Media found a bunch of family entertainment characters down in a well? And now they’ve all been scooped up by Jeffrey Katzenberg?”
On Wall Street, they’re just saying it straight: Classic Media, an entertainment...

DreamWorks Animation says in an SEC filing that the purchase price includes its assumption of Classic Media debt, although the amount was undisclosed. Also, either side can scrap the deal if it doesn’t close by October 20. It was widely known that DreamWorks was talking to Classic Media, and investors seem unmoved by the announcement: The studio’s shares are down 1% in early trading, roughly in line with the overall market. But Janney Capital Markets’ Tony Wible says he’s “incrementally more positive” on Dwa with its acquisition of rights to baby boomer cultural icons including Archie, Casper the Friendly Ghost, The Lone Ranger, Lassie, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Gumby, Underdog, Fat Albert, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Godzilla, He-Man, Dick Tracy, Frosty the Snowman, and Mr. Peabody & Sherman. Classic also has Where’s Waldo?, Postman Pat, and VeggieTales. “The success of the deal will depend in part on how these older...

Another Wednesday night is here and my booty is firmly tooched on the couch for America's Next Top Model. The three of us (I'm assuming there's still three of us) have made it all the way to the Kardashian guest star appearance. Yay for us.
When we last were with the girls, Angelea won the challenge and now she is feeling supa dupa fly and in her solo interview she says the other girls better be scared because they underestimated her. She's ready to take over now.
Bre thought she'd be doing better since she's been working as a model professionally for the last six years but she's not doing as well as she'd like.
Lisa says we better hold on tight because she's about to unleash the crazy beast from inside. I can't wait because I am bored as hell.
Kayla and Bianca talk about how they didn't think...

Hollywood loves to remake, reboot and revisit concepts that have been hits in the past. Right now, you can go to your local movieplex and choose between new versions of Fright Night, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Conan the Barbarian or The Smurfs. Meanwhile, this fall you'll be able to tune in to Hawaii 5-o, Prime Suspect or Charlie's Angels on TV.
While there's a lot of remake fatigue out there, there's always the rare project that feels like its worth revisiting. Thus, the topic of discussion in the Ae breakroom this week has been, Is there an older movie or TV show you'd be excited to see a remake for?
Ed Kennedy

Some of you might notice that this list is coming at your almost a week after Coachella ended. Well, there’s a very good reason for that. You see, I actually got so f*cked up at Coachella, so brain scrambled, so sun poisoned, so covered in dirt, so Od’d on hipster assh*les, that it was physically impossible for me to put this list together any sooner. So for those of you wondering what it’s like to give yourself to the desert for 3 days, but don’t have the time, energy or mental rereness to actually do so, allow this list to suffice. Here are the 20 Things I Learned At Coachella. 1. People Are Assh*les. Sure, this is a pretty standard rule in general, right? Most people are, in fact, assh*les. All over the world even! But Coachella is to assh*les as under the kitchen...

Yes, that's right. In case you haven't seen enough of him, the NBA's favorite decider is starring in his own web series, The LeBrons, featuring animated version of the characters introduced in the Wtf Nike commercials in which LeBron plays four versions of himself, doubling Shaq's duplication in his recent web series. The series takes place in James' hometown of Akron, Ohio and will debut on his website and The LeBrons YouTube channel. "I'm just really excited about this show," said James. "It goes back to the four characters who I feel like I am on a day-to-day basis." With Kid LeBron, Athlete LeBron, Business LeBron, and Wise (the mentor of the family), James will attempt to portray the many sides of himself. "It's an exciting time to get this out not only to kids but to everyone. I think everyone is going to have an opportunity to to relate to them,...

His media mogul billionaire dad often spoke very sternly to him and once pulled the head off of one of his toys. Likely none of us can imagine the trauma and horror of having a dad who wants his son to grow up with discipline and integrity, and so we really shouldn't judge Reid too much as he quite deservedly evolves into an incredibly spoiled rich brat without a shred of decency or humanity remaining in his fat and stupid neanderthalic soul.
Reid enters into a state of permanent teenage rebellion, and is a little like a combination of Paris Hilton and The Who. He drinks constantly, throws huge expensive parties (that...

For the Dec. 24-30 period, Little Fockers took a decisive lead in its first full week, but its dullness compared to its predecessor typified the lackluster times at the box office. Overall business was down 35 percent from the same week last year, which was a record-breaker propelled by Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Attendance was subpar for the time of year and off around 20 percent from 2004, the last time the days and dates were aligned. Little Fockers took in $62.7 million, increasing its sum to $77 million in nine days. Meet the Fockers, which ruled Christmas 2004, had generated $120.7 million and around twice the attendance through the same point. One plus is that Little Fockers held a bit better throughout the week than Meet the Fockers. True Grit (2010) ranked second but was far more impressive than Little Fockers, given how Westerns are often tougher sells than broad comedies.

Box office spirits weren't lifted over Christmas weekend, which marked the seventh down weekend in a row compared to last year. Relatively few joined the Focker family reunion, yet box office was so tepid that it still drew enough to lead. One bright spot was True Grit (2010), but it's unreasonable to expect a Western to save the collective bacon. Due in part to Christmas Eve landing on Friday, but mostly due to an unappealing slate of movies, overall business was down 44 percent from Christmas weekend last year, which featured a parade of big hits (Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel). The last time Christmas Eve fell on a Friday was in 2004, when Meet the Fockers was on top, and attendance was down considerably from then. Little Fockers bagged an estimated $34 million on approximately 5,000 screens at 3,536 locations, bringing it five-day opening to $48.3 million. By comparison, Meet the Fockers...

After all the buildup, Conan O'Brien's return to television on TBS Monday night was a modest, lowkey and slightly awkward affair - Seth Rogen, the first celebrity guest on what is now called Conan, was promoting The Green Hornet, a movie that doesn't even open until January. Both he and O'Brien seemed aware that they had committed an unstated, inexplicable breach of talk-show protocol. It was as if Rogen had been expected to bring coffee cake and instead showed up with a plate of uncooked ribs. But O'Brien is still dealing with the fallout of the past year's talk-show...

Conan O'Brien's "Live CoCo Cam" just wrapped up its 24-hour broadcast day, and it did it in news-worthy fashion. After a morning full of interns playing Twister and a visit from a mariachi band, the live stream concluded with a dance party (featuring a battle between a taco and a bear that would have fit right in as a part of that new Chris Brown video) and a wacky puppet show that concluded with the announcement of the guest lineups for the first week of "Conan" episodes, which kick off on Monday, November 8.
The first episode will feature Seth Rogen, a musical performance from Jack White and the winner of the "First Guest Poll" hosted at O'Brien's official Web site. The options there include the obvious (Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Jack Nicholson), the sublime (the entire case of the live action "Fat Albert" movie) and the ridiculous (Pope Benedict XVI,...

Conan O'Brien will kick off his return to late night television next month. But after nearly a year off the air and a big move to TBS, the redheaded television host and comedian had no problem securing some major star power for his first week out.
Seth Rogen is the first official guest to appear on "Conan," while Jack White of the White Stripes is the first official musical guest. We say official because a spot has been reserved for the "First Guest Poll Winner," which is said to be determined by a poll on the Team Coco website. Although Conan readily admits, none of the poll choices have actually been booked.
"For one reason or another, we haven't contacted any of these people - In fact, we're kind of hoping that, if someone on this poll starts getting a lot of votes, these folks will actually feel a bit...

After a Ted-heavy plot did a decent job opening the season, How I Met Your Mother went to their closer to make sure there was no second episode slump this week.
On "Cleaning House," Barney got the party started with his Bronx Zoo story of monkey business and then Robin asks if anyone watched The Deadliest Catch last night. Lily covers her ears and yells, “spoiler alert!” A slave to my DVR, I am always doing the same thing until I can get caught up on recent shows.
Ted lost me on the whole underselling of his Karate Kid analogy. No fan of the 1984 hit, let alone someone who claims it is one of the best movies ever, would refer to John Kreese as merely “the Cobra Kai Sensei.” Great idea, poor execution Ted. Sort of like when Daniel Larusso tried the Crane kick against Chozen in Karate Kid Part...
