For his first screen project since Doctor Who, Chris Chibnall is adapting Agatha Christie’s The Seven Dials Mystery for Netflix. More here.
Since he left behind the showrunner chair on Doctor Who, Chris Chibnall has done a theatre production, but not committed to another screen project. Well, until now. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Chibnall was steering an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel The Seven Dials Mystery, and a bit more on that has now come to light.
Chris Chibnall has written the script for the production, which is being backed by Netflix. Chris Sweeney is directing, and the plan is to get the show in front of the cameras this summer. The story is set in a stately home, so it’s a fair bet that this is going to shoot in a similar property in the British countryside.

[This story contains spoilers from the final season of The Crown.]
With the release of the last six episodes of The Crown on Netflix have come new questions about the fictionalized depiction of the British royal family.
In part two of the sixth and final season of the critically acclaimed historical drama, the stage is set for the future heirs to the throne as Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams) are granted permission to wed, and Prince William (Ed McVey) and Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy) rekindle their relationship after a brief break.
“Those couples coming together felt like a beautiful end to our story,” executive producer Suzanne Mackie told The Hollywood Reporter in a previous interview. “That, in a way, peace is restored to the land.”
In staying true to his original vision of ending the series in 2005, writer and creator Peter Morgan had to also find a way to conclude the Queen’s story...

For five seasons, The Crown has been lauded by critics and viewers alike. But as the royal drama’s depiction of historical events has inched closer to audiences’ recent lived memories, the series has come under scrutiny for its portrayals of the monarchy and dramatization of particular storylines.
Last year, Netflix added a disclaimer to the description of the trailer for season five on its YouTube channel that described the series as a “fictional dramatization,” a result of criticism from Dame Judi Dench saying The Crown “seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism.” The clarification, according to the show’s head of research, Annie Sulzberger, is unnecessary.
“I simply think that the audience is smarter than that,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below. “We’ve never pitched ourselves as a documentary. We’re trying to show this country, these institutions,...

The Crown is preparing for the end, and the trailer for the final six episodes brings to life what creator Peter Morgan has told audiences to expect from the hit Netflix drama: A love letter to the Queen.
The final episodes will draw to a close the genre-defining prestige royal saga that has been on screens since 2016, says the logline, and the footage centers around Queen Elizabeth, played by Imelda Staunton, as she battles sentimentality that the royal family is out of touch with the country, while reflecting on her reign as the longest-serving monarch in history and the life she put aside to become Queen.
In a poignant moment that speaks to the late Queen, The Crown‘s monarch says, “I will always be by your side.”
The series paused filming on the final season when Queen Elizabeth II died on Sept. 8, 2022 at the age of 96.

The first half of the sixth and final season of Netflix’s The Crown delivered an emotional retelling of the events surrounding Princess Diana’s untimely death.
The final season of the hit historical drama has been split into two parts, following a shift in release strategy employed by the streamer on other hit shows like Stranger Things, You and The Witcher. The final season covers the years 1997-2005; however, part one took place solely in 1997, in the two months leading up to and the week after Diana’s fatal car crash. (Part two, which releases Dec. 14, will be more expansive to span the remaining years.)
When asked about the decision to split the final run, executive producer Suzanne Mackie recently told The Hollywood Reporter: It prolongs the buzz around the final episodes, allowed them to transition Prince William and Prince Harry from the younger boys to young men in recasting,...

In her 1995 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, Princess Diana famously quipped that her marriage to Prince Charles was “a bit crowded” due to his extramarital relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles. And in The Crown’s retelling of her brief romance with Dodi Fayed, the creators paint a picture of yet another of Diana’s relationships that was never given the opportunity to simply exist between two individuals.
“One of the big things I did for season six is I gathered as many of the photos with the research team as I could of Dodi and Diana and I put them in chronological order,” explains Khalid Abdalla, who portrays Fayed in the Netflix historical drama. “When you put them in chronological order, it tells a story, and you’re kind of like, ‘Ah, that’s the moment when things shifted.’ You begin to feel the hounding from the media and all of these things.

Exclusive: The Crown has been criticized by the Queen’s former press secretary for lacking sensitivity in its portrayal of the events surrounding Princess Diana’s death.
Dickie Arbiter, who worked for Queen Elizabeth II during the period depicted in Season 6, accused The Crown’s creator Peter Morgan of “dramatic license gone bonkers.”
Arbiter was particularly critical of scenes in which Prince Charles (Dominic West) breaks the news of Diana’s death to her sons, Princes William and Harry. Diana is played by Elizabeth Debicki in the final season.
“The sequence of Charles telling his sons of their mother’s death was so insensitive, it was so unnecessary,” he told Deadline. “The death of their mother is still raw with both of them.”
He added: “The scenes between Charles and his mother, in which he blurted out that she wanted Diana to come back in a Harrods van were absolute nonsense.

The Crown, which has won 21 Emmy Awards during its run on Netflix and is one of the streamer’s most enduringly popular original series, will soon step down from the throne. The show’s sixth season will be its last telling the story of Queen Elizabeth II and Britain’s royal family in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The critically acclaimed series has chronicled some six decades of Elizabeth II’s reign, recasting its central characters every two seasons as the show moves through recent history as characters age. Claire Foy played the young Elizabeth for The Crown’s first two seasons and was followed by Olivia Colman in seasons three and four; both won Emmys for their work. Imelda Staunton took over the role in season five and will finish out the show as it moves into the early 2000s.

Season 6 of Netflix’s The Crown will follow a pattern of suggestions regarding sexy scenes between members of the British royal family. The series creator claims that while the idea of sex may be suggested, there are no sex scenes in the show.
Steamy scenes aren’t the focus of ‘The Crown’
Creator Peter Morgan maintains that while there have been many steamy scandals affecting the House of Windsor, Netflix viewers won’t see the royal family portrayed in such a manner. He believes handling sexy scenes with decorum benefits the series’ fans.
Morgan intentionally adopted a careful approach to nudity. But this was a calculated move on his part throughout all six seasons of The Crown.

Part one of the final season focuses on the relationship between Princess Diana and Dodi, a relationship that ended with the horrific car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris.
“I think it’s a really unique challenge as an actor, to portray those days,” said Elizabeth Debicki in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. “I really just trusted in Peter’s emotional blueprint that he created for us to follow. It’s his interpretation...

Netflix has announced a premiere date for the sixth and final season of The Crown — but it won’t be debuting all at once.
As it’s done with several series in the past year and change, the streamer will split The Crown’s last run into two parts. The first four episodes will premiere on Nov. 16, with part two — six episodes — following four weeks later on Dec. 14. Netflix has similarly split up the runs of the most recent seasons of Stranger Things, You and The Witcher — which like The Crown are among the more popular shows on the platform.
Netflix also released a short teaser for the season (watch it below), looking back at the life of Queen Elizabeth II (played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman in earlier seasons) before settling on Imelda Staunton’s current incarnation of the British monarch. Netflix revealed a teaser trailer and the release plan for the sixth and final season of “The Crown,” which will launch in two parts.
Part 1, comprised of the first four episodes of Season 6, will release in a batch on Nov. 16, 2023, just before Thanksgiving. Part 2, which consists of six episodes, lands Dec. 14 ahead of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Both drops are timed for binge-viewing with the family.
“The crown is a symbol of permanence,” Claire Foy’s Queen Elizabeth II says as a montage of Foy’s young queen transfers to Olivia Colman’s middle-aged version plays in the teaser trailer. “It’s something you are, not what you do.”
“Some portion of our natural selves is always lost,” Colman takes over. “We have all made sacrifices. This is not a choice, it is a duty.”
Cut to Imelda Staunton’s eldest version of the late monarch.

Fans of The Crown face one of the most difficult seasons of the Netflix series thus far. Not only is it the last installment of the series focused on the British monarchy, but this season will feature the death of one of its most beloved figures, Princess Diana. The moment will be “delicately recreated,” says the series’ producers.
How did ‘The Crown’ producers deal with Princess Diana’s death in season 6?
The Crown executive producers Andy Harries and Suzanne Mackie discussed season 6 during an Edinburgh TV Festival session celebrating the series. They pointed out how important it was for the series’ producers to handle Diana’s fatal August 1997 accident.
“The show might be big and noisy, but we’re not. We’re thoughtful people, and we’re sensitive people. There were very careful, long conversations about how we were going to do it,” Mackie said per Deadline.

The producers of The Crown say they have filmed the death of Princess Diana with “enormous sensitivity” as they brace for what could be the most controversial moment in the show’s history.
Speaking during an Edinburgh TV Festival session celebrating The Crown, executive producers Andy Harries and Suzanne Mackie were at pains to point out how thoughtful Left Bank Pictures and Netflix have been about capturing Diana’s fatal accident in Paris in 1997.
The death will feature in the early episodes of the final season of The Crown, which is expected to premiere later this year. The scenes were shot over a two-week period last October, with Deadline reporting that there was anxiety behind the scenes.

While The Crown is no stranger to the Emmys — it has, to date, 21 wins (including best drama series in 2021) and 69 nominations — it was only recognized in one acting category for its fifth season: supporting actress in a drama, for the indomitable Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal of Princess Diana. Over the course of a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter (which took place on July 12, two days ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike), Debicki, who’s originally from Australia, explains how her initial involvement with The Crown began long before the role of Diana was even being cast; how coming up in Australia, she’s seen some very familiar faces on the awards circuit this year; and what the daunting process of transforming into one of global culture’s most recognizable, adored figure actually looked like.

Suzanne Mackie has worked as an executive producer on Netflix’s The Crown for about 11 years, since its inception, when it was adapted from creator Peter Morgan’s The Audience, the play that originated on the West End starring Helen Mirren. After more than a decade working as one of Morgan’s closest producing partners across every aspect of The Crown, she reflects on the Emmy-winning historical drama as it approaches its sixth and final season.

When Netflix announced yet another new cast for the series "The Crown," as they do when the show jumps through time, an old memory popped up in my head. A much older friend of mine once looked at a picture of her younger self and said, "I remember her. I haven't seen her in a long time," as though she'd been a different person back then. It made me think about how much people change over the years and sometimes don't recognize their younger selves.

The fifth season of The Crown is set to premiere on Netflix on Wednesday, November 9, and in anticipation, the streamer has released a special behind-the-scenes look at the royal drama. In addition to clips from the new season, the video features interviews with the new cast, including Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II), Jonathan Pryce (Prince Phillip), Dominic West (Prince Charles), Elizabeth Debicki (Princess Diana), Lesley Manville (Princess Margaret), and Olivia Williams (Camilla Parker Bowles), as well as Peter Morgan (Writer/Creator), and Suzanne Mackie (Executive Producer). “Season 5 plays against a period of real criticism and uncertainty and unconfidence,” says Morgan following a highlight of Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II addressing the nation. “It’s quite shocking how overtly critical people were of the monarchy at that time.” The fifth season will show how the media and public sentiment turned against the royal family in the early 1990s and how Princess Diana played into those tensions.

Elizabeth Debicki paints an isolated picture of Princess Diana in the first look photos for Season 5 of Netflix’s period drama “The Crown.”
The upcoming season is expected to follow the Royal Family as they “are presented with possibly their biggest challenge to date, as the public openly question their role in ‘90s Britain,” per the streamer. Part of that, presumably, will be Princess Diana’s separation from Prince Charles and her post-Royal life leading up to her death in 1997.
In one of the photos, which you can see above, Debicki leaves a crowded event with a somber look on her face. Surrounded by people, she still seems very alone.
“That’s the amazing thing about playing these people at this time, because in the journey of ‘The Crown’ so far out of all the seasons, this is the most visual content we have of the Royal Family,” Debicki said in a statement.

Dominic West takes over for Josh O’Connor, who played the young Prince in the fourth season. Elizabeth Debicki, takes over for Emma Corrin, who played Princess Diana in the fourth season, which ended with the couple still married, if very unhappily. Season 5 is slated to premiere in 2022.

Fresh off its formidable sweep at the 73rd annual Emmy Awards, Netflix’s The Crown will come back for even more royal drama next year.
Netflix, during its Tudum fan event on Saturday, revealed that The Crown will return for Season 5 November 2022. The announcement was made by Imelda Staunton, who is taking on the role of Queen Elizabeth, in a video from the set of the show. The Crown was initially set to conclude with the upcoming fifth season, but series creator Peter Morgan reversed the decision sharing that the Emmy-winning drama will actually end with its sixth installment.
Season 5 began shooting in July, with a complete cast refresh. Staunton plays Queen Elizabeth, Lesley Manville is Princess Margaret, Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip, Jonny Lee Miller will play John Major, Dominic West takes on Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki features as Princess Diana. Khalid Abdalla will also appear as Dodi Fayed.

Josh O’Connor learned the hard way that an Emmy can be a royal pain as an unintentional weapon. Hugging someone at the end of the Sept. 19 ceremony in downtown Los Angeles while holding his new statuette, the “Crown” star — who had just prevailed for lead drama actor — accidentally knocked himself in the forehead with one of Emmy’s sharp wings.
Things got crimson for a second, but thankfully, O’Connor’s bloody Sunday moment was short-lived. Fellow drama actor nominees Regé-Jean Page and Sterling K. Brown came to his aid and had a laugh about the award season capper of a war wound.
For O’Connor, it was a memorable end to an Emmy Awards that also marked the close of his reign as Prince Charles on Netflix’s much-praised chronicle of Queen Elizabeth II and the contemporary House of Windsor. And it was quite a way to go out.

Netflix finally snagged its first major scripted series Emmy after The Crown won the Outstanding Drama Series category.
73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards: Deadline’s Full Coverage
The royal drama, which scored 24 nominations, beat The Boys, Bridgerton, The Handmaid’s Tale, Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Pose and This Is Us as part of a major Emmys rout.
The drama win is a hugely significant moment for Netflix. The streamer had never won a top series Emmy, having secured 30 nominations for best drama, comedy and limited series over the last eight years. In fact, Hulu is the only streamer to have won best drama for The Handmaid’s Tale.
Creator Peter Morgan, who revealed that they start shooting in the morning, said, “We’re going to have a party now. I’m lost for words and I’m very very grateful.”

In Regency era England, one moment of impropriety was all it took to sink a young lady’s marriage prospects or to ruin a family’s honor.
“Underneath the glamour and the lavishness of this escapist world, there is this running modern commentary about how in the last 200 years, everything has changed but nothing has changed,” says showrunner Chris Van Dusen. “I think that’s true for family and sexuality and relationship, and also for duty and honor.”
The Netflix series is one of several of this year’s drama Emmy nominees, in addition to “The Crown” and “The Mandalorian,” which place purpose at the center of the story, testing whether their characters will defy their duty, embrace it or be consumed by it.
Despite his Netflix piece being set more than two centuries in the past, Van Dusen says the pressures faced by the likes of the head-strong duke...
