What keeps “Saturday Night Live’s” head hair designer Jodi Mancuso and makeup department head Louie Zakarian coming back to Studio 8H year after year? “It’s just creatively the most fulfilling, and the family there at ‘SNL’ is really amazing,” Mancuso tells me. “Everybody’s really supportive of each other, each of the departments, and week after week you feel like you’ve really accomplished something.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Zakarian chimes in, “After 28 years, it’s a fun place to work. I can’t imagine doing anything else. On a week to week basis, we get to recreate some pretty amazing makeup looks, get to create some of our own unique makeup and hair looks. It’s kind of amazing.” He later adds, “And Jodi and I work so well together, we just play off each other and have a good time. It’s kind of awesome.

While Molly Shannon’s favorite scene for season two of “The Other Two” is in the episode where her character, Pat, has a nervous breakdown, it’s the part after that she loves. “I’m in the hospital bed and Streeter is like, I want to be there for you and do everything, and I’m like, yeah, I don’t like that. I don’t need that kind of energy,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). She elaborates that she loved how it combined her favorite kind of comedy with the most ideal scenario for shooting. “I love the combination of really funny and then touching. And it’s really fun to do a scene in bed all day, not having to stand up. If you’re going to be on the set for 14 hours, you might as well be in a bed acting.

One of the most exciting things about the shared Emmy nomination for visual-effects supervisor Stephan Fleet and VFX producer Shalena Oxley-Butler of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” was being able to see each other in person again after a year of working remotely, over video conferencing software and email, from different countries.
But the tone when the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy nominees finally gather might not be completely celebratory. Not only did the Television Academy have to limit the number of nominees who can attend, due to health and safety guidelines amid the Delta variant of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but also, the first night of Creative Arts fell on the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
“Hollywood always wants to — fortunately, I believe — lead the way in being responsible for whatever the issue may be,” says Darin Pfeiffer, events expert and founder and CEO of the Impact Agency.

The first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies is underway, and Deadline is updating the winners list live as they are announced. Have a look at the trophy recipients and the night’s remaining nominees below.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will hand out Emmys in 37 categories tonight, with this year’s second and third ceremonies set for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday. All three will have limited audiences but no red carpet. An edited version of the Creative Arts Emmys will air at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 18.
Netflix’s The Crown and Disney+’s The Mandalorian come into the Emmys with a leading 24 noms apiece. Among platforms, as usual the fight is between HBO and Netflix, with the combined HBO and HBO edging the streaming giant in total noms 130-129. Disney+ has 71 noms, following by NBC with 46 — a strong showing for a broadcast network in the age of streaming.

When Maya Rudolph stepped back into Studio 8H to host NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in March, expectations were extremely high. Not only is she a beloved former cast member, she has been portraying Vice President Kamala Harris (and won her first Emmy for the effort last year). There is a lot about her rich history with the show that makes returning an enjoyable experience for Rudolph, but perhaps nothing is more important than her shorthand with hair department head Jodi Mancuso.
“We’ve known each other for 20 years, so I’ve had that head in wigs for 20 years,” Mancuso says.
(They know each other so well, Mancuso was the inspiration for the “Bronx Beat” sketch.)
Rudolph laughs that Mancuso knowing “how big my head is” saves time when they are collaborating. Due to the “up-to-the-minute” nature of the late-night sketch show, department heads don’t see the sketches until Wednesday,...

“Saturday Night Live” hairstylist Jodi Mancuso already faces the challenge of styling dozens of wigs every episode, but the Covid restrictions presented a whole new level of difficulty this year. Mancuso and her hair team are typically able to immediately surround cast members backstage to change out their wigs for the next sketch, but with social distancing, team members could only approach the cast individually. Their hard work paid off, with the team earning an Emmy nomination for Best Variety Hairstyling. “I have a lot of pride in this Emmy nomination,” says Mancuso in an exclusive new webchat for Gold Derby. “This year was even more challenging for a live show.” Watch the full interview above.

At last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, “SNL” won for its lighting design, makeup, production design, and for the “Creating Saturday Night Live” short form series. That pushed the number to 76 for its 44 years on the air. No guest actors prevailed, although it had many chances with Sandra Oh, Emma Thompson, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, John Mulaney and Adam Sandler all nominated. “Saturday Night Live” won Best Variety Sketch Series at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, marking the first time the long-running show has defended a series award and extending its record haul to 72, the most of any program.
Though “SNL” has been on the air for 43 years, it has only won three series awards. It took home Best Variety Series in 1976 for its first season and again in 1993 for its 18th season. After the category was split into Best Variety Sketch Series and Best Variety Talk Series in 2015, “SNL” won the former last year for its buzzy, politically charged 42nd installment. It had leading 2/13 odds to repeat this year.

“SNL”‘s 43rd season earned 21 nominations this year, including nine acting bids. It received seven statuettes at last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, including Best Comedy Guest Actress for Tiffany Haddish.

Over the weekend, NBC’s legendary variety program “Saturday Night Live” won seven more trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday night. It prevailed for comedy guest actress (Tiffany Haddish), variety directing (Don Roy King), music and lyrics, production design, lighting design, make-up and technical direction.
The show now has a mind-blowing 71 Emmy wins in its 43-year run, way ahead in the all-time record books for any series. The next closest series for the all-time marks held by “Game of Thrones” with 45 and “Frasier” with 37. “SNL” has got three more shots at the primetime ceremony on Monday, September 17, so how many more victories will it achieve to bump up its total haul even more?
