Like most art lovers, the prolific filmmaker Lasse Hallström had never heard of the prolific painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) until recently. Af Klint was disregarded, discouraged, sidelined and overlooked during her lifetime, but except for a four-year period, she never stopped creating. She took painting beyond representational still lifes and landscapes and into the uncharted sphere of abstraction, several years before Wassily Kandinsky would claim the mantle of that innovative leap. Her work sat in storage for 20 years after her death, per her instructions, and none of it is for sale.

This 2011 theatrical remake of John le Carré’s spy classic is a happy surprise — it’s every bit as distinctive and accomplished as the famed Alec Guinness TV miniseries. Swedish director Tomas Alfredson and the writers know how to tell a story — at just over two hours it’s neither bloated nor curtailed. Gary Oldman immediately makes the brilliant George Smiley his own — he’s younger but just as quiet and secretive. Oldman is surrounded by distinctive talent, an ensemble that serves the story: John Hurt, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy. It’s a delight for mystery-spy fans whether or not they’re familiar with the John le Carré-George Smiley universe.

Blood on Satan’s Paw is new surreal folk horror from writer and director Richard Mansfield, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Sunday 21st January. I got chance to ask Richard about his inspirations for the film, the sudden increased interest in Folk Horror and the bespoke score from Cunning Folk.
What can we expect from the film Blood on Satan’s Paw?
You can expect a surreal trip to the woods, bad bunnies, creepy puppets, acid-laced lollipops and a demonic bear.
What was your inspiration for writing Blood on Satan’s Paw?
I was very much inspired by the Folk Horror classics like The Wicker Man, Witchfinder General and Blood on Satan’s Claw as well as all the original Hammer films from a youth spent watching inappropriate horrors I’d recorded off late night TV.
There seems to be an increased interest in Folk Horror.

Screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber have dealt with heightened emotions through their work in adaptations of Young Adult novels like The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, but in Tommy Wiseau of The Disaster Artist they might have found the ultimate symbol of volatility. As played by James Franco in the film, Wiseau is a force of nature who refuses to bend down to things such as budgetary restrictions, other people’s feelings, and even common sense. His mission is to shoot The Room, a film in which he’s put all his energy and hopes. He doesn’t care that his film seems to make no sense, that his actors don’t know what they should be doing, and that the people he’s hired to work with him have no clue as to what he expects from them.

Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things -- and here is what we’re most excited about this week:
Why We’re Obsessed With ‘The Wine Show’
Pour another glass because our favorite import -- Matthew Goode -- is back with a second season of The Wine Show, Sky Vision’s food and travel magazine series, which moves the action from Italy to the South of France. Available on in the U.S. on Hulu, the show became a favorite among viewers thanks to the bromance between Goode and co-host Matthew Rhys and their journey through the heart of Italy in search of tasty wine and lasting memories. Joining Goode (who also stars on The Crown season two) is James Purefoy, an equally English and handsome actor, who steps in for Rhys. This season, two hosts are tasked with finding a case of wine to match a six-course French lunch cooked by Stephane...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who is the best TV director? Why? (For old, current or upcoming shows.)
Marisa Roffman (@marisaroffman), TV Guide Magazine
The recent Emmy Awards was a good reminder of just how great television directors are right now. It was the best overall crop we’ve had in years, and one of the few categories where it felt like it could have gone any way.
But in terms of best television director, I’m partial to David Nutter. His 30-plus year resume is impressive (“The Sopranos,” “ER,” “The X-Files,” plus an Emmy win for “Game of Thrones”) and wildly varied (he’s done procedurals like “Without a Trace,...

After highlighting 55 titles confirmed to arrive this fall, we now turn our attention to the festival-bound films either without distribution or awaiting a release date. Looking over Venice International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and New York Film Festival titles, we’ve rounded up 25 movies — most of which we’ll be checking out over the next few weeks — that we can’t wait to see.
Check out our 25 most-anticipated festival premieres below, and let us know what you’re most looking forward to.
Caniba (Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel)
As part of the groundbreaking Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel have established themselves at the forefront of modern documentary filmmaking, most notably with their landmark 2012 film Leviathan. In their second collaboration this year (after somniloquies, which premiered at Berlin), the two seem to be engaging with a more typical documentary subject, though the form of Caniba remains to be seen.

There was lots of exciting and controversial movie news that dropped this week. Take a look at some of the highlights below!
Jurassic Park fans only have to wait exactly one year until the next installment in the revived franchise is released. On June 22nd, 2018, we're getting Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which will bring back new stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, along with that always familiar face, Jeff Goldblum. We still don't know too much about the sequel, but we can enjoy this ever-nostalgic teaser poster in the meantime.
Just a couple of days ago we learned that the Han Solo film lost its directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller due to creative differences, but the film wasn't an orphan for too long. Ron Howard's name was the first to be thrown around upon this news, and today it has been confirmed that he will indeed take over the project. It's a sensible move, as Howard has a longstanding relationship with Star Wars, as he was originally tipped to direct The Phantom Menace. The film starring Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo is slated for release on May 25th, 2018.
We have the new trailer for David Gordon Green's Stronger, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as one of the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombing back in 2013. It's the true story of how Jeff Bauman (Gyllenhaal) helped the police track down the killers, while recovering from the trauma himself. Check out the trailer below!

Xavier Dolan and Jessica Chastain fans alike can rejoice, as we have our first teaser poster for his first English-language film, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. The film tells the story of the written correspondence between a famous television star and a young actor, and the impact it had on both of their lives. It looks like Jessica Chastain's character is "up to no good" to quote Dolan, as she plays a sneaky journalist in the film. Check out the poster below!

This week, we heard that legendary method actor Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting. The There Will Be Blood star has three Oscars and an almost unparalleled filmography. He's widely considered one of our best actors of all time, which is why most have been devastated by this news. While we're hoping Daniel changes his mind at some point in the future, we can at least look forward to seeing him in what will apparently be his last role, as a fashion designer in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread, due out later this year.
This week we got to feast our eyes on more footage from the Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049. If what you saw in the trailer blew your mind, there are even more visuals to marvel over in the video below. Blade Runner 2049 sees Ryan Gosling as a new blade runner named K who discovers a long-kept secret that could plunge society into chaos. This leads him to finding Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for almost thirty years. Check it out below!
We can't get over this photo sent out by Robert Downey Jr. on the set of Avengers: Infinity War, that has Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Wong and The Hulk sharing a meal. It also gives us a little glimpse at some new costumes, and is obviously getting us super pumped for the new film.

Thank You for Your Service debuted its first trailer and poster this week! Jason Hall, who wrote the screenplay for American Sniper, makes his directorial debut with this one and also serves as its screenwriter. The movie gives an in-depth look at how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects American servicemen and women returning home from war. It stars Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Amy Schumer, and Joe Cole. This looks like a powerful movie and we expect some Oscar buzz around this one. Check out the trailer below and see Thank You for Your Service in Cineplex theatres on October 27th!
A new trailer and poster for American Assassin dropped and this looks like an unbelievable ride. This one follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence, leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East. Check out the new trailer below and see American Assassin when it hits Cineplex theatres September 15th!
Deadpool 2 has an official release date of June 1st, 2018 and production officially began this week! Even though that's more than a year away we cannot be more pumped! Ryan Reynolds will return as everyone's favourite foul-mouthed anti-hero. The plot for this one is still under wraps but we do know that the story will involve Cable (son of the X-Men character Cyclops), played by Josh Brolin. David Leitch is set to direct; he also has Atomic Blonde hitting theatres this coming July. The original Deadpool was such a fun ride that the wait for Deadpool 2 is going to be looong... check out the teaser trailer for Deadpool 2 and a picture from the movie's set below!

Today in movie news: retirements, creative differences, and tons of behind-the-scenes featurettes. Check it out below!
Last night, we heard that legendary method actor Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting.
Sad news in the Star Wars world, as we learned that the directors of the new Han Solo prequel film, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, have left the project due to creative differences. The 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie filmmakers were likely bringing a more comedic approach to the film, as that is their forte. We're curious about how this will affect the prequel, which has been in production for some time now. Word is that Lucasfilm is looking to replace the duo with filmmaker Ron Howard.
We've got a new featurette from the film Thank You For Your Service, which stars Miles Teller as a soldier suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The film also stars Haley Bennett and Amy Schumer. Check out the behind the scenes look below!
We're super pumped for War for the Planet of the Apes, which is getting stellar early reviews. Today a new featurette dropped, which highlights Andy Serkis' amazing motion-capture performance and the incredible visual effects used in the film. Check it out!
It's apparently the day of featurettes, as we have a third behind the scenes look, this time at the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049. If what you saw in the trailer blew your mind, there are even more visuals to feast your eyes on in the video below. Blade Runner 2049 sees Ryan Gosling as a new blade runner named K who discovers a long-kept secret that could plunge society into chaos.
This leads him to finding Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for almost thirty years. Check it out below!
Last but certainly not least, we are enjoying this photo sent out by Robert Downey Jr. on the set of Avengers: Infinity War, that has Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Wong and The Hulk sharing a meal. It also gives us a little glimpse at some new costumes, and is obviously getting us super pumped for the new film.

For those of you that don’t know, Swamp People is a reality series following Cajuns from the swamplands of Louisiana during the 30-day alligator-hunting season. The show is already in its 8th season

Hey creeps, as ya know I gave my two cents on the action adventure romp (with strong horror biz roots) Camino a few columns back (click here if the use of a search function is too much for ya). Anyway, I’m bringin’ this whole thing up because none other than that films die-rector Josh C. Waller just strolled into the Crypt o’ Xiii!
Famous Monsters. Welcome to my humble hovel Josh! How did Camino come about, and were there any ass-paining elements to the shoot?
Josh C Waller. The original idea came about while shooting The Boy in Colombia, but the project itself came together as a result of Daniel [Noah] and I having a last-minute gap in our production schedule and needing to fill that gap. The challenges that faced us aren’t necessarily ones unique to our film. They were the same types of obstacles that all independent filmmakers face.

"Before this film is over ... 22 people in America will be shot." That's how Under the Gun, the powerful new documentary about gun violence produced by Katie Couric and directed by Stephanie Soechtig, begins. Eight of those people, they caution, will die within the two-hour run time. Another year, another move further away from caring about pop. Whether that's pop's fault or mine, I'm not sure. But there was still plenty of great new music released in 2015, and here, according to my idiosyncratic tastes, are the best albums, or at least my favorites.
1. Wire: Wire (Pink Flag)
This is said to be the first time that Bruce Gilbert's replacement, guitarist Matthew Simms, was heavily involved in the creation of a Wire album, and the result is...the closest Wire has ever come to sounding like a Colin Newman album. I exaggerate for effect, but only slightly: most everything thrums along smoothly and motorik-ly, he takes all the lead vocals (though Graham Lewis supposedly wrote many of the lyrics), and there are none of the post-punkier outbursts of the group's previous two reunion albums, though near the end of Wire, the one-two punch of "Split Your Ends" and "Octopus" come close.

Halloween doesn’t have to be over once the last trick-or-treater has crept back into the shadows of the night. You may still be possessed by the spirit of the holiday and in desperate need of some real scares. In an effort to address that need and help you find a choice that goes beyond the usual iconography of the season, I’ve picked three titles that may not immediately jump to mind when it comes to autumn-tinged chills and terror. They are not self-consciously seasonal choices, like John Carpenter’s Halloween or Michael Dougherty’s 2007 anthology Trick ‘R Treat, both excellent choices for cinematic fear on the pumpkin circuit. Two of them rely more on mood, creeping dread, an insinuating style and, dare I say, even a poetic approach to storytelling than the usual Samhain-appropriate fare. And one has an inexplicably bad reputation in the halls of conventional wisdom,...

After last week’s blockbuster opening, Batman and Robin Eternal #2 has a little bit of a sophomore slump as a mysterious assassin almost beats Harper Row (aka Bluebird) to death until she is saved by Dick Grayson and a silent, deadly Cassandra Cain, who runs off to do other mysterious things. After the extended action scene, most of the issue is Stephanie freaking out about Dick being alive along with a flashback of Batman and Dick Grayson as Robin fighting the Scarecrow with some twisted, horror influenced art from Paul Pelletier and Tony Kordos and a bendy, trippy color scheme from Rain Beredos. This sequence makes up for a mostly lackluster fight scene between the mystery attacker, Cass, and...

Pencils by Tony Daniel

Letters by Tom Napolitano
Published by DC Comics
The relationship between Batman and his various Robins has always been a problematic one. There is something off about a wealthy, not-right-in-the head man, who saw his parents gunned down in front of his face choosing to train a young boy to be a soldier against criminals and supervillains. But there is also something nostalgic and heartwarming about Batman and a young Robin teaming up to take down the bad guys that fans of all eras can connect to from Adam West and Burt Ward in the campy 1966 Batman TV show to Batman and the intelligent Tim Drake in the 1990s cartoons and comics and even more recently with the father/son squabbles between Batman and Damian Wayne.

When Animals Dream
Written by Rasmus Birch
Directed by Jonas Alexander Arnby
Denmark, 2014
When Twilight debuted in the aughts everyone assumed that the copycats would last forever. Forever only lasted about four years, but the lasting impact was made by low-key fare like Let the Right One In. Taking a cue from that 2008 film, When Animals Dream places emphasis on atmosphere and dread, rather than buckets of blood. Eerie films like this live or die on their setting alone, and there is no more fantastic location to use than a small town on the rocky coast of Northern Denmark. Mikkel Hess’ score, a blend of traditional folk songs and harrowing orchestral, is another excellent mood-setter.
Marie (Sonia Suhl) is a teenaged outsider living in a small fishing village. Her homelife is dominated by her overly protective father (Lars Mikkelsen), and her mother, who is confined to a wheelchair and dulled by sedatives.

Sony is pressing ahead with a third Jump Street movie, as well as a possible Jump Street vs Men In Black film, and a female-headlined spin-off. For 23 Jump Street specifically, Rodney Rothman is back and working on the script (he wrote the second one). Adapted from the John le Carre novel of the same name, A Most Wanted Man had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year where reviews seemed rather muted. Following a premiere at Sundance in January, the spy thriller A Most Wanted Man is heading to theaters this summer, marking one of the final performances from the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. The film is an understated and reserved thriller in the vein of Michael Clayton and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, with Hoffman anchoring the film with one hell of a grizzled performance (read my review from Sundance here). The film also stars Rachel McAdams (whose German accent needs some work), Willem Dafoe, Daniel Bruhl and Robin Wright. It's a spectacular slow burn that is undoubtedly worth seeing. Watch below! Here's the first trailer for Anton Corbijn's A Most Wanted Man, originally from Yahoo: A Most Wanted Man is directed by Anton Corbijn (The American) and written by Andrew Bovell (Edge of Darkness), based on John Le Carre's novel of the same name. When Anton Corbijn’s latest film opened with dour visuals and Phillip Seymour Hoffman deadpanning his dialogue through a wobbly German accent, I was a little concerned. Fortunately, this concern turned out to be mostly misplaced as A Most Wanted Man proved to be a brooding, slow-paced thriller that managed to hold my attention without resorting to bombast. Chances are if you enjoyed Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, then this latest Le Carré adaptation will be right up your (grey filtered) street.

Martin Starr of Freaks and Geeks and Judd Apatow-verse fame may not be the first person that you’d think will be in your favorite horror film of 2014. And yet that could very well be the case when you experience the inspired lunacy of Tommy Wirkola’s Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead, the ballsier, brasher, better follow-up to the Nazi zombie hit Dead Snow. Starr plays the leader of a trio of undead experts known as the Zombie Squad in this Raimi-esque bit of inspired lunacy. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Red vs. Dead was a twisted surprise, and Starr sat down with us a few days later to talk practical effects, un-pc humor, and the joy of working with people as crazy as you are. Take the director of The American starring George Clooney and source material from iconic author John Le Carre, the man who wrote Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and you've got a gorgeously shot, quiet, slow-burning spy thriller. A Most Wanted Man takes a team of off the grid German intelligence spies, reminiscent of the Impossible Mission Force without all the bells and whistles, and contrasts them with the impatient American government agencies who just want someone to blame for any sort of terrorist activity. But the plot at the center of this thriller from director Anton Corbijn isn't an impending terrorist attack. Read on! Philip Seymour Hoffman leads a small intelligence outfit in Hamburg, Germany, where the attacks of 9/11 were planned. What will make waves this year? What films will cinephiles be talking about for the next ten days? There are dozens of films that have piqued our interest and that we’ll be covering here in daily diaries starting on Friday but here are ten, alphabetically, that already have people buzzing. And the amazing thing is how easy it would have been to choose a completely different ten. (Synopses courtesy of Sundance.)

Lance Edmand’s Bluebird was met with much acclaim when it arrived at Tribeca, and it deserves everything that’s come to it. However… the film is something of a highwire act, but though it never falls to one side and loses its balance, the rope sinks to the ground a little more than it should, so the event is not quite as enthralling as it could be.
If you’ll excuse the terrible analogy, perhaps it’s better put by saying that it isn’t engaging in the sense that you become attached to the various characters who we focus on; but rather the atmosphere and the pace, which is handled perfectly, are what will interest whoever watches it.
The basic premise is how a community is affected by a young boy falling into a coma- The bus driver Lesley (Amy Morton) whose slip of...

Anton Corbijn's A Most Wanted Man is still without a U.S. distributor, but perhaps this sizzle trailer that has just debuted will give someone enough reason to pick it up. Either that or I expect we'll see this one head to the Toronto or Venice Film Festival without a distributor and hoping some rave reviews spur a bidding war. It certainly has the talent to attract some buyers. Based on the John le Carre (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) novel of the same name, the film stars Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright and Daniel Bruhl and the story centers on a Chechen Muslim who illegally immigrates to Hamburg, where he gets caught up in the international war on terror. eOne, who just picked up Olivier Hirschbiegel's Diana, is handling the film in Canada so perhaps they'll step up for the domestic release as well. The...

Two-time Academy Award® winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), teams once again with fellow two-time Academy Award® nominee, writer Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen), on Rush , a spectacular big-screen re-creation of the merciless 1970s rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, it was announced today. The film recently began principal photography and is co-financed and produced by Cross Creek Pictures and Exclusive Media, in association with Imagine Entertainment. Brian Grazer, Working Title Films and Revolution Films are also producing.
The epic action-thriller stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives. Also starring Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy) and Alexandra Maria Lara (The Reader), Rush is produced by Andrew Eaton (A Mighty Heart), Ron Howard,...

Rush may not be a film that you’re familiar with but it’s one that I’ve been looking forward to for quite a long time. We got to chat with Academy Award winning director, Ron Howard (who’s helming this project) late last year at the 2011 Bifa awards to get the lowdown on the new movie focusing around F1. You may think then that it’s going to follow suit with my favourite movie of last year Senna but it’s completely different. In fact this one is described as an epic action-thriller in the official press release below. Senna on the other hand replied completely on documentary footage and photography to achieve the amazing movie that it turned out to be. That said, one of the Producers of Senna, Eric Fellner is also Producing Rush but that is pretty much where the similarities end.

Daniel Radcliffe's scary date movie could make him a bankable lead, while The Muppets does well but still strings along behind
The winner
When Hammer announced a big-screen version of Susan Hill's popular ghost story The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, opinion was divided about the casting choice. Outside the Potter franchise, the actor had appeared only in Australian ensemble drama December Boys, which was appropriately modest at the box office. Could the 22-year-old, as industry parlance has it, "open" a movie?
As far as the UK market goes, the answer to this question is a resounding yes. With a debut weekend of £3.15m, The Woman in Black has exceeded all expectations, beating rival new entrant The Muppets (£2.65m). The period horror film won not just Friday (£890,000 v £473,000), which you'd expect on a school day, but also the family friendly Saturday (£1.30m v £1.16m). UK distributor Momentum Pictures...

The 2012 Orange BAFTA ceremony tonight was, as expected, dominated by Michael Hazanavicius’ silent black-and-white love story The Artist.
Taking home seven awards in total, including ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actor for Jean Dujardin’, ‘Best Original Screenplay’, ‘Original Music’, ‘Cinematography’ and ‘Best Costume Design’, The Artist won almost every category it competed in.
Although Dujardin was a surprise over George Clooney for Best Actor, there was no shock for Best Actress with the BAFTA going to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, which was also honoured for the extraordinary Make-up & Hair category.
In the supporting category The Help’s Octavia Spencer won Supporting Actress and Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for Beginners, as expected.
Outstanding British Film and Adapted Screenplay went to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with Senna (Documentary, Editing) and Hugo (Production Design, Sound) also winning two Baftas.
