Aidy Bryant is set to star in “Lonely Hearts Club,” a dramedy series based on an episode of the Crime Junkies podcast, currently in the works at Peacock. “Beau Is Afraid” filmmaker Ari Aster is executive producing the project.
Set in the late 1940s, “Lonely Hearts Club” is described as a darkly comedic true crime thriller about a lonely woman who falls in love with a dim but handsome con man. Together they form an unlikely “Loser-Bonnie-and-Clyde”-style partnership that ends in lies, murder and the electric chair.
The show is based on an episode of Ashley Flowers’ Crime Junkie podcast entitled “Infamous: The ‘Lonely Hearts’ Killers.”
Bryant is re-teaming with Rob Klein, former head writer of “Saturday Night Live” and executive producer on Bryant’s Hulu series “Shrill,” for the project. Klein and Bryant will write and executive produce “Lonely Hearts Club.” Ashley Flowers and Kevin Mills are...

Shrill this season closed out the story of Annie Easton celebrating her imperfect road to self-acceptance and teasing new paths for the ambitious journalist and her loved ones. The Hulu original comedy’s series finale is the subject of Deadline’s latest It Starts on the Page, which spotlights award-season scripts.
Created by showrunners Aidy Bryant, Lindy West and Ali Rushfield, Shrill series takes inspiration from West’s Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman. Over the course of its three-season run, the show centered on Aidy’s Annie as she navigates romance, her career and self-love.
In the last chapter, things seems to be looking up for both Annie and best friend Fran (Lolly Adefope). The two buddies, who have been together since their college days, get more settled in their relationships and find more stability and courage in their professional lives. However, when Annie oversteps her boundaries with boyfriend...

Annie Easton’s journey comes to a close Hulu’s Shrill ends in May with its third and final season. But as bittersweet as ending the series about self-discovery may be, star and executive producer Aidy Bryant said her character’s journey culminates in a satisfying coda.
“I think what you come away with is the battle with self-hatred is never over. There’s no cherry on top or no golden prize at the end…in that way I think Annie’s journey comes to a beautiful end,” she said during Hulu’s TCA Winter Press Tour slot on Thursday.
Premiering Friday, May 7, Shrill season three finds Annie (Bryant) energized by her breakup with dud boyfriend Ryan (Luka Jones) and her newfound momentum at work. Annie feels like everything is finally falling into place for her, but does she actually know how to get what she wants?

In one of the more emotional moments of the Game of Thrones series finale, Jon Snow finally got to give Ghost the cuddles the direwolf deserved. After causing some uproar over his relatively cold goodbye to Ghost earlier this season, Jon’s greeting to his loyal pet was a sign that the battle-scarred character was finding some peace. Fans of the show certainly thought so, and celebrated the reunion between Jon and a battered but still loveable creature.

The Writers Guild Awards and the Academy writing nominees always don’t line up; many films are ineligible. This year, those included Oscar-writing nominees “Lion” and “The Lobster.”
This year, the WGA and the Academy differed dramatically. While the WGA deemed “Moonlight” and “Loving” as Original Screenplays, the Academy considered both as Adapted; only “Moonlight” landed a nomination.
At the WGA, as at the BAFTAs, Barry Jenkins’ script for “Moonlight” competed for the Original Screenplay Award against both Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Unlike the BAFTAs, Jenkins emerged the winner over Lonergan, a sign of strength for “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Oscars.

NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” has promoted Sarah Schneider and Chris Kelly as co-head writers for season 42 of the sketch comedy show, TheWrap has learned. Schneider and Kelly have been responsible for some of the show’s most recently popular sketches, such as “Bern Your Enthusiasm,” featuring Larry David as Bernie Sanders, “Bar Talk” with Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, “The Beygency,” “Back Home Ballers,” and the Emmy-nominated “(Do It On My) Twin Bed.” NBC declined to comment on whether or not Rob Klein and Bryan Tucker, the co-head writers for season 41, have been ousted and if replacements for Schneider and Kelly on the writing.

As Bernie Sanders's profile grew over the past couple years, so, too, did the number of people saying he reminded them of Larry David. It makes sense, considering the hair, the glasses, the volume, and the, well, Jewishness. That's why, when David first appeared as Sanders on Saturday Night Live, during the Tracy Morgan–hosted October 17 episode, the response was rapturous. Everyone agreed David was perfect, if not pretty, pretty, pretty good. Last week, after talking about the recent "Screen Guild Awards" sketch, SNL co–head writer Rob Klein answered a few questions about how Larry as Bernie came to be, and what it was like in the room where it happened. Larry David playing Bernie Sanders seems so obvious that it almost feels destined. How did it actually come together? We knew Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider were going to write the debate sketch. They write the Hillary pieces,...

As a cultural institution that airs live every week, people look to Saturday Night Live to see how it responds when something big happens in the news. Vulture spoke with the sketch's writer, Rob Klein, about how the idea went from Google News to airing on Saturday, and all the steps in between. The Oscar nominations came out two weeks before the "Screen Guild Awards" episode. The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Colin Jost is no longer the head writer at “Saturday Night Live” — and apparently he hasn’t been for a while. The “Weekend Update” co-anchor and stand-up comic was last credited as head writer on May’s Season 40 finale, which was hosted by Louis Ck. At the beginning of this season, Jost chose to step down and focus on “Update.” Splitsider first reported that Bryan Tucker and Rob Klein currently split the role, not Jost. Jost has been on the show’s writing staff since Season 31. He shared head writing duties with Seth Meyers during Season 38, before Meyers departed to host NBC’s.

The change was reflected in the end credits of Saturday's episode, which credited only SNL vets Rob Klein and Bryan Tucker as head writers; Jost's name was included among the rabble of regular writers. The move will allow Jost to focus on "Update," though we're sure to get all the answers in an oral history published 15 years from now.

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

As for the winners, Claire Danes scored a big win, taking home a trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, while Jeff Daniels took home the prize in the Lead Actor category.

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were upset in their respective acting categories, but Breaking Bad won the night’s top prize, taking home its first Emmy for Best Drama. It was an unpredictable night in several major categories: In addition to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama and Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale winning for Supporting Actor, Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever were surprise winners — Wever was so shocked that she practically ran off the stage without delivering an acceptance speech.

There's a section of this interview I conducted with Bill Hader here at San Diego Comic-Con that I debated heavily over including or not. I chose to include it, but I need to set up what happened.
Back in May, Hader announced that he was leaving "Saturday Night Live" after eight seasons. The day of the announcement, I wrote an essay on Hader's legacy at "SNL." As it turns out (and as I found out here), Hader read that piece. I'm only including this because, in that particular part of the conversation, Hader reveals just how down he was the day of that announcement, which gives insight on what it's like to leave a show like "SNL" -- a show that Hader still clearly loves.
Hader is at Comic-Con to promote his involvement in the animated film "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2." It's an interesting time for Hader. Obviously...

Justin Bieber's unaired SNL skit has finally been released. And there's a good reason it didn't make the final cut: it's the "greatest trainwreck ever." At least, according to Bill Hader. The "Song for Daddy" sketch features J.B., Hader, Fred Armisen and Bobby Moynihan as a country western band with a very strange song. The 19-year-old pop star plays Hader's son and keyboardist in the musical group. Pretty much everything went horribly wrong during the dress rehearsal, but lucky for us all, Hader, along with writers Rob Klein and John Solomon, provide their personal commentary on the hot mess of a sketch. Highlights include the stage almost...

Part of the fun of "Saturday Night Live" is that the show is a high-wire act: Anything could go wrong at any moment for millions of viewers to see on live television. In this sketch from the show's dress rehearsal that didn't make it to air, everything that possibly could go wrong does. And watching the sketch crash and burn is one of the more entertaining things we've seen in a while.
Bill Hader, who stars in the sketch as a country singer unveiling a new avant-garde sonic masterpiece, gives commentary on the sketch in this video, along with writers Rob Klein and John Solomon. Calling it "the greatest train wreck in history," we see a mess of a sketch that includes the stage almost falling on Justin Bieber (who then breaks character and tells the audience that it was a mistake), props going missing, bad lighting, failed musical cues and flubbed lines.

Between now and June 28, the deadline for Emmy voters to submit nomination ballots, EW.com will feature interviews with some of the actors and actresses whose names we hope to hear when nominations are announced on July 18.
Since joining the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2010, Taran Killam has established himself as a versatile breakout for his commitment to everything from late-night Robyn music video re-recations to bizarre, dance craze-inspiring digital shorts, even Romney son impersonations. But Killam particularly enjoyed seeing a character he developed four years ago at Los Angeles’ comedy troupe The Groundlings making it to air this season.

Spring Training began this week, which means Major League Baseball’s regular season is right around the corner. And while football, basketball, and hockey can get us through the cold months, nothing compares to America’s Pastime. Each baseball game is theater at its best, with the hope of greatness hung on each and every pitch. We watch for the drama and unpredictability. We suffer the losses. We celebrate the wins. But the fact is, not all wins are alike. There is another level.
Saturday Night Live is like a weekly baseball game.

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

We just discovered from our source that comedian and actor Tracy Morgan is about to sign on another comedy film titled ID Theft, which is a comedy that casts him as a cash-strapped father who sees a shortcut out of his struggles when the credit card of a suburban dad lands in his lap.
The script is being written by Colin Jost and Rob Klein, from an original pitch by Kristofor Brown. Morgan has given his own notes to the screenwriters, and 3 Arts and American Work are producing.
But that’s not all for Morgan; we hear that Paramount Studios separately has Morgan set to star with actor Tj Miller in a new film titled Freshman Roommates, and we hear they are also making plans to line up Another film right after that for Morgan. No word yet on what that film will be.

Even though Kevin Smith and Bruce Willis were the big names behind "Cop Out," it was Tracy Morgan who garnered the most attention. And now, Warner Bros wants to extend their relationship with the comedian for at least one more project. The new comedy is called "ID Theft," in which Morgan would play a cash-strapped father who sees a shortcut out of his struggles when the credit card of a suburban dad lands in his lap. The script is being written by Colin Jost and Rob Klein ("SNL"). Morgan is also in talks with Paramount Pictures to star with Tj miller (Cloverfield) in "Freshman Roommates," about a college kid who buys into an alleged email scam for fun, only to find that the spoiled son of a deposed African dictator has enlisted him in his effort to secure his inheritance. "Blades of Glory" writting team of JOhn Altschuler and Dave Krinksy are writing the script.

HBO's "Rome" is Heading to the Big Screen: A big-screen sequel to HBO's "Rome" is rumored to be heading to the big screen. "Rome" creator/executive Bruno Heller penned the script and show stars Kevin McKidd (Lucius Vorenus) and Ray Stevenson (Titus Pullo) will likely sign onto the movie, which picks up in Germany four years after the series ended. "Rome" aired from 2005-07 and took place during Ancient Rome, beginning with Caesar's invasion of Gaul and continuing with the rise of the first Emperor Augustus. The series centered on soldiers Pullo and Vorenus, who appeared to die at the end of the series. [EW]

Warner Bros. must be pleased with the way Cop Out performed, because the studio has booked Tracy Morgan for another comedy. ID Theft will feature Morgan as a dad struggling with financial troubles. When a suburban father.s credit card winds up in his hands, he decides to use it as an easy way out. The script comes from SNL writers Colin Jost and Rob Klein. Warner Bros. isn.t the only studio investing in Morgan. As reported by Deadline Hollywood, Paramount has him in their own comedy called Freshman Roommates, in which he.ll star alongside Tj Miller. The Writers Guild of America honored The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air at their ceremony on Saturday night, firmly establishing the films as front-runners in their respective Oscar categories.
Mark Boal certainly deserves the accolades after embedding himself with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in Baghdad in 2004 and turning his journalist findings into a dramatic original screenplay. In his speech Boal thanked director Kathryn Bigelow for supporting “an unpopular story about an unpopular war that has now lasted twice as long as WWII with no end in sight.”
Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner picked up the prize for their adaptation of Walter Kirn’s novel, and Mark Monroe won for the moving documentary The Cove.
The WGA Awards are a somewhat reliable indicator of the Academy Awards. ”Original Screenplay” has matched 10 out of the last 15 years, and “Adapted” has lined up 11 of 15, including Milk and Slumdog Millionaire last year.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
