French novelist Annie Ernaux, whose novel Happening was the inspiration for Audrey Diwan’s 2021 Venice Golden Lion winner of the same name, has won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The 82-year-old writer is known for her body of semi-autobiographical works charting the lives of women and social change in France from the 1960s onwards.
Highlights of her literary career span her 1974 debut work Cleaned Out (Les Armoires Vides), A Man’s Place (1984), A Woman’s Story (1987) and her 2008 memoir The Years.
A number of her novels have been successfully adapted to the big screen, topped by Diwan’s Happening, which was adapted from Ernaux’s 2019 novella. Diwan, a novelist herself, consulted with Ernaux as she wrote the screenplay adaptation.
The powerful drama is based on Ernaux’s experiences when she fell pregnant as a student in the early 1960s when abortions were illegal in France.

"He gave my life rhythm. I measured time by him." Strand Releasing has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie French drama titled Simple Passion, from filmmaker Danielle Arbid. Adapted from the novel by Annie Ernaux. In this sexually frank portrait of female lust & vulnerability, a mother falls into an addictive relationship with a Russian diplomat, with whom she has nothing in common. This story "documents the desires and indignities of a human heart ensnared in an all-consuming passion." It was originally chosen as part of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival selection, but later premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival. The film stars Laetitia Dosch and Sergei Polunin as the lovers, plus Lou-Teymour Thion and Caroline Ducey. This looks like a cautionary tale about lust more than a story about romance. This trailer is Nsfw. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Danielle Arbid's Simple Passion, direct from YouTube...

Cinemas may be closed, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any compelling, and moving productions finding their way to our (smaller) screens, for us to immerse ourselves in and enjoy. This week marks the digital release – exclusive on Curzon Home Cinema – of the brilliant French romance piece Simple Passion, starring Laetitia Dosch (Jeune Femme) and controversial Russian ballet dancer turned actor Sergei Polunin.
To mark the film’s release we spoke to Dosch about her beguiling and emotive turn in this Danielle Arbid drama, as she speaks about getting into the head of this complex role, and why she felt it was so hugely important to have so much trust in her director. Talking to us at the annual, and wonderful UniFrance event called ‘Rendezvous with French Cinema’, we also asked about working with co-star Polunin, and how the events of the past year have affected the French film industry.

Laetitia Dosch is sensational as a lecturer passionately embroiled with Sergei Polunin’s reptilian Russian diplomat
The French-Swiss actor Laetitia Dosch lavishes all her underappreciated star quality on this insouciantly explicit movie about amour fou and erotic obsession, adapted by the director Danielle Arbid from the 1991 novel by Annie Ernaux.
Dosch plays Hélène, a university lecturer in Paris, divorced with a young son, who has fallen passionately in love with an icily sexy, dead-eyed and tattooed young Russian diplomat called Alexandre, played by Ukrainian-born ballet star Sergei Polunin. When he is not driving too fast while buzzing from Scotch in his top-of-the-range Audi and giving Hélène top-of-the-range orgasms, Alexandre has a habit of not returning her pitifully submissive voicemails. He casually leaves her waiting in the midday hotel room where they’d agreed to meet in all her brand new La Perla lingerie, while he disappears back to Moscow to...

Strand Releasing has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Franco-Lebanese auteur Danielle Arbid’s “Simple Passion,” a Cannes 2020 title that played strong on the fall festival circuit.
Announced as part of the Cannes 2020 selection, the French-language film premiered in San Sebastian, and would go on to play Busan, Moscow and Zurich ahead of a planned release in France later this year.
Adapted from Annie Ernaux’s 1992 bestseller, the film tracks an emotionally-toxic but physically combustible relationship between a Parisian academic (Laetitia Dosch) and her mercurial – and married – Russian paramour (dancer Sergei Polunin). Their relationship begins to curdle when one party shows more than carnal interest in the other.
Reviewing the film out of San Sebastian, Variety critic Guy Lodge praised lead actress Laetitia Dosch’s star turn, calling her a “vital life source” and noting that she “holds nothing back physically, but it’s her face, constantly registering shifting internal tides of desire,...

There's passion aplenty in French-Lebanese director Danielle Arbid's latest but she joins a rich catalogue of French filmmakers - most notably Catherine Breillat - who point out that, no matter how romance starts, it's never that simple in the end. Which is not to say that single mum Hélène (Laetitia Dosch) doesn't think it will be. After all, although she's hooking up with younger married Russian Alexandre (Sergei Polunin) for hot and heavy sex on the afternoons when he calls her, she tells him she doesn't want any more than he is offering. "You're in love with love itself," her friend says - although Arbid shows us that it's the sexual rush, in particular, that thrills. We might see Hélène and Alexandre engaged in brief pre or post-coital conversation but it is inconsequential, suggesting that if they went on an actual date the chat would soon dry up.

Despite their individual box-office success, the exceedingly mild Bdsm frolics of the “Fifty Shades” films did little to revive Hollywood’s interest in the kind of frosty, high-style erotic drama that was de rigueur in the early 1990s — around the time that French writer Annie Ernaux scored some international renown with her sexually frank autofiction novel “Simple Passion.” French filmmakers’ loyalty to such material has remained more steadfast, however, so it’s somewhat surprising that it’s taken nearly 20 years for Ernaux’s provocation to reach the screen. Finally, Franco-Lebanese director Danielle Arbid has taken a gutsy stab at it, with an imperfect but glassily compelling study of obsessive, finally debilitating desire that honors its source with an unblinking female gaze.

With many film lovers nervous about returning to movie theaters in the post-covid era, a couple of Czech tech pioneers have come up with a service that enables films to be screened easily and legally in alternative settings, either outdoors or in non-theatrical venues, such as a bar or a restaurant.
On Thursday, Ctirad Hemelík and Vít Krajíček will present their innovative movie distribution service Artinii to industry players as part of Cannes Market’s Next section for cutting-edge cinema technologies. They are primarily targeting their service at community groups who wish to license films in order to stage one-off or limited-run public screenings of movies, while also providing rights holders with an additional revenue stream.
As Artinii is based in the Czech Republic it tested its service with a local film — “The Elementary School” by Oscar-winning director Jan Sverák. This was screened at more than 150 sites on the same day,...

Ilan Eshkeri has been tapped to score the BBC Earth docuseries “Perfect Planet.” Eshkeri, who has previously composed scores for “Still Alice” and “Young Victoria,” joins the ranks of Hans Zimmer and Steven Price who previously worked on “Planet Earth II” and “Our Planet,” respectively.
David Attenborough will once again serve as the program’s host, and over the course of five episodes, will look at how animals are adapting to the environment. “Perfect Planet” explores volcanoes, weather, oceans and how forces of nature drive, shape and support Earth’s diversity of life.
Said Attenborough in announcing the series: “Oceans, sunlight, weather and volcanoes — together these powerful yet fragile forces allow life to flourish in astonishing diversity. They make Earth truly unique — a perfect planet. Our planet is one in a billion, a world teeming with life. But now, a new dominant force is changing the face of Earth: humans.

There’s a scene in “Joker” where Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck dashes into a rancid public bathroom after a harrowing killing spree on the New York City subway. With Arthur emboldened by his sudden taste for violence — and Phoenix by Hildur Guðnadóttir’s unsettling string score — he begins to dance. As depicted by the sinewy, gaunt, physically starved Phoenix, it’s an eerie act of undulation (and was reportedly an improvisation by the actor), and less a dance than some kind of animalistic channeling of psychic forces. Whether that’s Phoenix acting as Arthur, or Phoenix having some kind of fourth-wall-breaking spasm, who knows? It’s in the movie, and it is what it is.
The New York Times’ dance critic Gia Kourlas has weighed in on Phoenix’s performance, and she says that the actor is a “great dancer” in a recently published piece.

Chicago – In any ear for pop culture, the name Rudolf Nureyev is well known. A Soviet Russian-born ballet virtuoso nicknamed “Lord of the Dance,” Rn lived large until he died, of complications due to AIDS at age 54 in 1993. But before that, he was born into poverty, danced into fame, and historically defected to the West in 1961. “The White Crow,” a new film directed by Ralph Fiennes, tells his story.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
An unknown actor named Oleg Ivenko portrays Nureyev, and the title refers to the Russian term for outsider. The dancer was an ultimate lone wolf as portrayed in the film, seemingly separated from everything else by his blazing talent. Deftly directed by actor Ralph Fiennes – who also portrays Nureyev’s legendary teacher Alexander Ivanovich Pushkin – the timeline jumps from childhood through the early years as a Soviet sensation, to the Paris of 1961 at the moment of his defection. The mega rollout of Avengers: Endgame this weekend has put some pause to what has been a plentiful roster of new specialty titles in recent weeks. One distribution exec last week said off the record that most companies are holding off to wait out the juggernaut’s opening. Perhaps most are but not all. Sony Pictures Classics is opening Ralph Fiennes-directed bio-drama The White Crow in five locations in New York and L.A., offering audiences in search of a non-Marvel alternative a well-received option. The company had success with Fiennes’ previous directorial effort, 2013’s The Invisible Woman. Abramorama, meanwhile, is heading out with Venice 2018 premiere Carmine Street Guitars. The company said the documentary is set for a long “slow burn” in theaters. First Run Features is opening fellow nonfiction title Chasing Portraits by Elizabeth Rynecki, which chronicles her search for paintings created by her great-grandfather, Moshe Rynecki,...

As a director, Ralph Fiennes shows the same alertness for telling details and rich characterization that he does as an actor. And that’s saying something. His talent shines in The White Crow, a look at the early life of ballet great Rudolf Nureyev, up to and including his defection from Russia and the Kirov Ballet at the Paris-Le Bourget airport in 1961. He was 23. The White Crow is not a biopic. It’s an impressionistic glimpse at the forces driving Nureyev — something of a diva even then — to accept no...

"This could be your last trip." Studiocanal UK has debuted the first official UK trailer for the biopic drama The White Crow, the latest film directed by acclaimed actor Ralph Fiennes. It tells the incredible true story of renowned Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who managed to defect from the Soviet Union to the West, despite being closely guarded by the Kgb, while traveling through Paris in 1961. Nureyev is played by real-life ballet dancer Oleg Ivenko making his acting debut, along with Ralph Fiennes in a role as his ballet coach Alexander Pushkin. The cast also includes Adèle Exarchopoulos, Louis Hofmann, Sergei Polunin, Olivier Rabourdin, Raphaël Personnaz, Chulpan Khamatova, Zach Avery, and Mar Sodupe. This premiered at the Telluride and London Film Festivals last year, and should be released in the Us later this year. Based on the reviews and first look at this footage, this seems like it might be pretty good.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American rights for Ralph Fiennes’ film “The White Crow,” the studio said on Monday.
The film, based on the book “Rudolf Nureyev: The Life” by Julie Kavanaugh, was directed by Fiennes and written by Oscar-nominated David Hare. Along with North America, Sony nabbed rights to distribute the film in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, and Benelux.
“The White Crow” captures the physicality and brilliance of ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, whose escape to the West stunned the world at the height of the Cold War. Nureyev emerged as one of ballet’s most famous stars, and though seen as a wild and beautiful dancer he was limited by the world of 1950s Leningrad. His flirtation with Western artists and ideas led him into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with the Kgb. The film offers insight into Nureyev’s dangerous defection, masterminded by the dancer’s great friend,...

With her first foray into documentaries, “The Handmaid’s Tale” star and executive producer Elisabeth Moss extends her partnership with Hulu. Moss — who won a pair of 2017 Emmys for her work on the series — assumed the Ep role for “Ballet Now,” her first producing credit for a project in which she does not appear. The film stars her friend and fellow Broadway veteran, New York City Ballet Prima Ballerina Tiler Peck, and was directed by Oscar nominee Steven Cantor (“Blood Ties: The Life and Work of Sally Mann”).
“Ballet Now” takes its name from BalletNOW, a three-night series of performances staged at Los Angeles’ The Music Center in July 2015 and 2017. To curate the second edition, Peck assembled around her an international company of dancers skilled in tap, hip-hop, ballet, and clown artistry. Kenneth Branagh is a theater man at heart. So his spanking new version of the 1934 Dame Agatha Christie chestnut Murder on the Orient Express – Branagh directs and stars as world-famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot – feels more like an all-star, theatrically confined stage piece than something freshly reimagined for the screen. Its delights, including dazzling production design and period costumers, are decidedly retro, as is the plot: A man is murdered on the Orient Express. Poirot must interrogates a dozen strangers on the train, each a suspect in the bloody homicide.

Another week, another remake hits multiplexes. It’s hard to argue against the fact that a new version of Murder on the Orient Express is supremely unnecessary. That’s just something we need to accept about Hollywood. Necessity there is not the mother of invention. At least in the case of this remake of the Agatha Christie whodunit, there’s an effort being made to make it look rather handsome. Under the stewardship of Kenneth Branagh, shot in glorious 70mm, this seems more like a creative lark for the team making the film than a quick cash grab. If nothing else, we have that to hold on to with this particular movie. Based once again on Christie’s classic novel, the film follows renowned detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) as he solves yet another seemingly unsolvable case. This time, he’s aboard a lavish train with thirteen other passengers, at least until one is found dead.

A second full length trailer for Murder On The Orient Express has hit the internet. I for one believe it was Dame Judi Dench, in the caboose, with the candle stick.
More importantly then who may or may not be the killer, we are given our first look at Johnny Depp in the film through this new trailer. Playing the Gangster, Ratchett, Depp is poised to bring us one of his more subtle classic performances, rather then the outlandish Jack Sparrow role.
The trailer is full of intense shots of the train and a man with a gun. There's a scream, and announcement to the passengers that someone has been killed, and the detective lets us know, that everyone is a suspect. The investigation will not end, until the murderer is found, and the entirety of Imagine Dragons "Believer" is played. Check it out below.

A scarred and heavily accented Johnny Depp advises that we trust no one in the new trailer for “Murder on the Orient Express,” a new adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic due in theaters November 10. Kenneth Branagh directs and stars in the big-screen mystery from Fox, and they’re joined by an A-list cast that also includes Tom Bateman, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom, Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Marwan Kenzari, Olivia Colman, Lucy Boynton, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Sergei Polunin. The new clip suggests lots of intrigue but not many clues about how many.

It isn’t exactly a surprise that no one has wanted to touch Murder on the Orient Express since Sidney Lumet’s 1974 version, but now that Kenneth Branagh has picked up the gauntlet, there are going to be comparisons.
Now that we finally have a trailer, it looks like we might have a worthy effort on our hands, and we certainly have the talent on board to at least pay tribute to the classic. Plus, it conveniently takes the time to show us who our players are.
We may be decades into an era of remaking every movie we can, but there are still some things that you don’t mess with. If you’re looking at a real classic, and one loaded with legendary actors, you better have a pretty serious idea of creating something relevant. Branagh’s is clearly a name that people are willing to give the benefit of the doubt there.
