Following their decision to step down from royal duties and move to America in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle signed a lucrative deal with streaming giant Netflix for upwards of $100 million. In late 2022, their six-part docuseries Harry & Meghan was released and became one of the most-watched documentaries on the platform.
However, the Sussexes’ next project Live to Lead, featuring interviews with Greta Thunberg and Jacinda Ardern, did not find popularity with audiences. Nor did another documentary showcasing Prince Harry’s Invictus Games titled Heart of Invictus, which was also labeled a flop after failing to crack Netflix’s Top 10.
But the prince and the former Suits star are now trying again to capture the magic they once had with some brand new content including a cooking show as well as a documentary about Harry’s favorite sport. And while filming the latter, Meghan had an awkward exchange that was captured by cameras.

Here’s some pirate math: If a pirate workplace comedy has over 2,000 VFX shots in the first season and only about 1,000 VFX shots in Season 2, how has the scope grown? By being smarter about how it uses them.
“We had a better methodology in how we used our skies and our oceans,” “Our Flag Means Death” VFX supervisor David Van Dyke told IndieWire. “There were certain things that we did [in Season 1] that were a little self-imposed, and we had to kind of roll up our sleeves and grind our way out of mistakes. This season, we knew what to stay away from and we were able to use our pennies more effectively.”
That in turn allowed the Max series to tackle much more ambitious VFX challenges as the scope of the Pirate Republic widens to include the legendary Zheng Yi Sao (Ruibo Qian) and her pirate navy, seas that match the...

Gro Harlem Brundtland started out as a doctor. Climbing the ranks, she became Norway’s first female Prime Minister. Now, new show “Power Play” takes a closer look at her way to the top.
“She is aware that we made it,” says showrunner Johan Fasting, who co-wrote with Silje Storstein and Kristin Grue. Currently in her eighties, Brundtland wasn’t involved in developing the series, however.
“This story needed to be told, now. It wouldn’t make sense to wait just to be courteous.”
Playing in main competition at his year’s Canneseries, which runs April 14-19, “Power Play” is produced by Motlys and Novemberfilm, with REinvent International Sales handling international distribution.
Brundtland served three terms as Pm; she was also the director-general of the World Health Organization. Although she entered politics back in the 1970s, things are still rocky for high-profile female politicians. Recently, Jacinda Ardern resigned as Pm of New Zealand,...

Live to Lead is a documentary series directed by Geoff Blackwell with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Greta Thunberg, Bryan Stevenson, Jacinda Ardern, Siya Kolisi, Gloria Steinem and Albie Sachs.
Leaders committed to making a difference in the world share their inspiring life stories in this series.

In previous years they were brought by the hand of the creator of Black Mirror and presented by stars such as Hugh Grant (F*ck 2021 and 2022)… This year they have changed angle, and they are offering us something entirely new, and with new stars.

Late-night television hosts honoured Queen Elizabeth’s legacy during their shows on Thursday (8 September), after it was announced that Britain’s longest-reigning monarch had died.
The Queen died “peacefully” at Balmoral on Thursday afternoon, according to Buckingham Palace, having spent 70 years as head of state, outlasting her predecessors and overseeing monumental changes in social and political life.
British presenter James Corden, who hosts The Late Late Show, expressed his grief over the Queen’s death, while adding how “grateful” he was for the “incredible service and leadership she has shown during all of our lifetimes”.
“She is the only queen most of us have ever known,” he continued, adding, “She has seen 14 US presidents during her reign and on Tuesday –just on Tuesday, welcomed her 15th prime minister {Liz Truss]”.

New Zealand is to return to a full, nationwide lockdown from midnight local time following the discovery of a case of Covid-19 that was locally transmitted. Film and TV productions will have to halt, but the pain may be brief.
The move to a “Level 4” lockdown was announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday afternoon at a televised press conference. Auckland and the nearby Coromandel area will close to all but essential services for seven days, the rest of the country for just three.
The country has already been largely self-isolating and had not incurred a locally transmitted case since February. Behind largely closed borders, the Level 4 restrictions have not been applied for nearly a year.
Ardern argued that it is easier and safer to return straight to the maximum level of response and then ease restrictions as appropriate, rather that start too low and allow the disease to spread.

The planned film “They Are Us,” starring Rose Byrne as New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern and centered on the Christchurch mosque shootings that took place in 2019, has been put on hold following unauthorized distribution of the script. Director Andrew Niccol shared a statement with New Zealand outlet Newshub that development would be paused after criticisms that the script, which he also wrote, was insensitive. (Via The Guardian.)
“I am deeply saddened by the pain caused to the families of the victims, due to the wrongful distribution of our draft script for ‘They Are Us.’ The script is far from final, and never intended to be shared with the affected members of the Muslim community at such an early stage,” Niccol said, adding that pre-production wouldn’t continue until there is “full consultation with New Zealand’s Muslim community has taken place.”

Fictional account of mosque shootings starring Rose Byrne as Jacinda Ardern has been criticised as ‘insensitive’
Work on the controversial film They Are Us, which dramatises the 15 March Christchurch mosque shootings, has been put on hold.
The film takes its name from a phrase in a speech made by prime minister Jacinda Ardern following the killing of 51 Muslim worshippers by a white supremacist in 2019. It focused on Ardern’s response following the attacks, with actor Rose Byrne slated to play Ardern.

Since the Cannes Market title They Are Us was announced late last week with Rose Byrne poised to play Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, there has been an outcry among many New Zealanders who believe a still-raw tragedy would be exploited by Hollywood storytellers. Criticisms include inferring that the 2019 attack on the Muslim community in Christchurch that cost 51 innocent lives would turn into a “white savior” narrative focusing on Ardern, who banned assault weapons from the country after the tragedy. Tens of thousands have signed petitions, putting on their heels filmmakers who want to tell the story of a country’s reaction to a massacre. Critics also have ignored the fact that the film’s director, Andrew Niccol, is a New Zealand native.

Philippa Campbell, one of the producers on “They Are Us,” a new drama about the aftermath of the Christchurch attacks on New Zealand’s Muslim community, has quit the project after a media backlash.
“I have listened to the concerns raised over recent days and I have heard the strength of people’s views. I now agree that the events of March 15, 2019, are too raw for film at this time and do not wish to be involved with a project that is causing such distress,” Campbell said in a statement.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who will be portrayed by Rose Byrne in the film, has also distanced herself from the effort.
The movie, to be written and directed by Andrew Niccol (“Gattaca”), was unveiled last week by sales company FilmNation Entertainment and CAA Media Finance. They have plans to present the project to international buyers at the upcoming Cannes virtual market.

A producer on the film “They Are Us,” which is meant to star Rose Byrne as New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern, has pulled out of the project after the film was widely criticized in New Zealand and by Ardern herself.
“They Are Us” is being written and directed by Andrew Niccol and focuses on Ardern in the aftermath of a 2019 terrorist attack on two mosques in the city of Christchurch that left 51 people dead and another 49 injured. The project was announced last week and is meant to be presented to buyers at the Cannes Virtual Film Market.
The film has been widely criticized during the past week, with many people saying the story is coming too soon or assuming that it focuses on the white prime minister instead of the Muslim victims affected. A Change.org petition calling for the film to be shut down has drawn over 63,000 signatures,...

Following a backlash against Cannes virtual market package They Are Us, one of the producers of the project has exited and one of the subjects of the movie, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, has criticized the project.
Since being announced on Thursday, the Rose Byrne-led film about Ardern’s response to the 2019 Christchurch mosques massacre has been widely criticized in New Zealand.
Today, veteran producer Philippa Campbell, a producer on TV hit Top Of The Lake, apologized for her own involvement and said she had not realized the pain the film would cause.
“I have listened to the concerns raised over recent days and I have heard the strength of people’s views,” Campbell said in a statement to New Zealand media.

Rose Byrne is set to star as Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, in a drama about how Ardern took action to ban assault rifles in the country following a deadly shooting against the Muslim community in 2019.

As Hollywood continues to grapple with the far-reaching and damaging effects of Covid-19, on the other side of the world Australia and New Zealand are bucking the downward trend.
The countries are no stranger to major international productions — in part thanks to lucrative tax incentives — but they are currently benefitting from a production boom unlike anywhere else thanks to their governments’ swift and stringent response to the virus (in addition to geographic and demographic factors).
