House Speaker Mike Johnson gave a speech about the antisemitism present at Columbia University, which was met with boos and heckling from pro-Palestinian protesters in the crowd.
Johnson delivered a stern message on the university’s campus for school administrators and protesters after days of anti-war demonstrations, arrests and campus closures at colleges across the United States.
A spokesperson from Johnson’s office stated that Johnson wanted to speak to Columbia students because he believed that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) had not done enough to keep them safe.
“Today, I’m here to proclaim, for all those who gnash their teeth and demand to wipe the state of Israel off the map and attack our innocent Jewish students, this simple truth: neither Israel nor these Jewish students on this campus – this campus will stand alone,” the House speaker declared during his speech.

Isra Hirsi, the daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), recently revealed that she was among three students suspended from Barnard College after she participated in a pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University.
In a statement posted on X, Hirsi identified herself as an organizer with Columbia University Apartheid Divest. This group advocates for the university to divest from “companies complicit in genocide.”
“I just received notice that I am 1 of 3 students suspended for standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide,” she wrote on Thursday morning.
Currently a junior, Hirsi emphasized that she had never faced any disciplinary action or warnings from Barnard College before this incident. The protest, which took place on the university’s quad, led to several arrests. Columbia University President Minouche Shafik sent a letter to the New York police requesting assistance in removing the crowd and accusing the approximately 100 protesters of disrupting university operations, violating policies and damaging campus property.

New York police arrested dozens of protesters and students at Columbia University, as campus administration cracks down on pro-Palestinian protests in the aftermath of testimony by university officials before Congress.
Police cleared an encampment of demonstrators on Columbia’s Morningside campus on Thursday, after University President Nemat Shafik sicced law enforcement on the protest. After the demonstrators were forcefully removed from the area, university staff were seen dismantling tents and throwing away food and other provisions brought into the encampment.

About a half hour after Joe Biden finished up a give-em-hell type of State of the Union speech, he was still in the House chamber, shaking hands, taking selfies and chatting up other senators in candid moments that were caught on C-Span. The president lingered for so long that some photographers joked that soon the House chaplain may show up to give the next morning’s prayer.
Finally, House Speaker Mike Johnson, still on the rostrum, called an end to the proceedings, and the TV lights dimmed. Biden got the signal that it was time to go, but even then it took him a few more minutes to exit.
The speech and even Biden’s endurance in its aftermath should have provided some reassurance to Democrats fretting about Biden’s age and agility in recent months — as one prominent Hollywood backer put it to me the other day, the term is “freaking out.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee has set its sights on progressive candidates who dare to criticize Israel or its leaders, funding negative attack ads during their primaries, Politico reported. The group is expected to spend about $100 million on the efforts, sources told the outlet.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal filed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) and Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) and Ralph Norman (R-South Carolina). The appeal sought to overturn fines imposed on the three for their consistent refusal to wear face masks on the House floor at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The justices chose not to provide any additional comments along with their decision to decline the appeal.
This ruling upholds the decision of a lower court, which dismissed the constitutional challenge brought forth by the congresspeople and ruled that the courts do not have jurisdiction to review the mask policy.
Lawyers who represented House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Lousiana) supported the lower court ruling and urged the Supreme Court to reject the appeal. Notably, the Republican leadership as a whole opposed the mask mandate.
Greene accumulated fines that exceeded $100,000 due to her repeated violations of the mask requirement.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) moved to force the vote to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) for her mistranslated comments regarding Somalia and Somaliland.
Greene offered her censure legislation on the House floor as a privileged resolution, a procedural gambit forcing leadership to hold a vote within two legislative days.
Leadership was able to bring this resolution to the floor for a vote or motion to table it. These choices require majority support.
Greene said she informed leadership that she was introducing the resolution but did not get an indication of how they would act on it.
On top of being formally censured, this resolution would remove Omar from the Budget Committee and Education the Workforce Committee.
“I would love to expel her; I think she should be deported, I honestly do,” Greene told reporters after moving to force a vote on the censure measure.

Update: Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) is the latest GOP nominee for speaker, but he may face the same types of divisions that sank three previous party designees for the top House post.
Johnson, the vice chair of the House Republican Conference and deputy whip, drew 128 votes in the third ballot this evening, per CNN, but coming in second, with 44 votes, was “other.” GOP members cast 43 of those “other” votes for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-ca), the former speaker, even though he was not in the race. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-fl), the other declared candidate, garnered 29 votes.
“Democracy is messy sometimes, but it is our system,” Johnson said to reporters after the vote. “This conference, this House Republican majority is united.” He said the “intention” is go to the House floor for a vote on Wednesday.

Even though Ego Nwodim joined “Saturday Night Live” in 2018, in many ways, this current 2022-23 season is her breakthrough year. In fact, I’d go so far as to say she deserves her first-ever Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. And it’s all thanks to steak.
The sketch in question, “Lisa from Temecula,” aired February 4 with first-time host Pedro Pascal. Nwodim plays the titular woman who shocks her sister’s friends at dinner with her obsession over “extra, extra well-done” steak. “I’m about to tear this thing up,” Lisa declares when she starts cutting into the blackened piece of meat. Soon the entire table is shaking under the force of her knife and fork, and the cast members all completely break character, “Debbie Downer”-style. Watch the sketch below.

Kenya Barris, the creator-writer-producer behind titles like “Black-ish,” “Grown-ish” and “America’s Next Top Model,” has proven himself to be one of television’s most reliable hitmakers. More importantly, he knows how to get people talking.
On Jan. 23, Barris made his directorial debut with “You People.” The comedy instantly soared to the top of the Netflix charts, racking up more than 65.61 million viewing hours to date. Christian group “He Gets Us,” a campaign to promote Jesus, ran two ads during the game for 20 million. They were funded in part by the conservative billionaire owners of Hobby Lobby, which has been at the center of several controversies, including the support of anti-lgbt legislation and a years-long fight that eventually resulted in the Supreme Court allowing companies to deny medical coverage for contraception due to religious beliefs.

Controversial podcast host Joe Rogan is once again receiving backlash, this time for comments that critics have labelled “antisemitic”.
The Joe Rogan Experience host was discussing US Representative Ilhan Omar with his guests, Breaking Points co-hosts Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti, during a recent episode when he made the offending statements.
Omar was recently removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee by Republicans over accusations that she is antisemitic.
In 2019, she tweeted that Republicans wanted to condemn her comments about Israel because “It’s all about the Benjamins, baby”, a reference to Benjamin Franklin being on 100 bills. She later apologised for her comments.
“That’s not an antisemitic comment, I don’t think that is. Benjamins are money,” Rogan said on his podcast.
He continued: “The idea that Jewish people are not into money is ridiculous. That’s like saying Italians aren’t into pizza. It’s f***ing stupid.”

No stranger to controversy, Joe Rogan this week offered the following generalization about Jews on his massively popular Spotify show: “The idea that Jewish people are not into money is ridiculous. That’s like saying Italians aren’t into pizza.”
Rogan was speaking to onetime MSNBC contributor Krystal Ball about Rep. Ilhan Omar’s 2019 tweet that Israel’s defenders in the U.S. were motivated solely by money.
“It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” wrote Omar at the time. The tweet drew a swift rebuke from leaders on both sides of the aisle, including then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Omar later recanted, writing, “I unequivocally apologize.”
The Spotify host’s statements this week were part of a conversation about Rep. Adam Schiff.
“It’s crazy,” said Rogan. “Did you see him sitting next to Ilhan Omar, where she’s apologizing for talking about it’s all about the Benjamins?...

Like everyone else in the world, the “Morning Joe” studio discussed the saga of the China spy balloon Monday.
On Saturday, the U.S. military shot down the suspected Chinese balloon off the coast of South Carolina, after it had made its away across much of the U.S. Republicans have criticized Biden for not shooting the balloon down sooner, as it was able to float over sensitive military installations. China claimed the balloon was a meteorological research vessel that was blown off course.
The balloon also stalled a planned meeting of high-level officials from the U.S. and China on Friday. When news broke of it floating about 60,000 feet above the mainland U.S. last week, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken postponed his trip.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Mn) was booted off the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in a move that Democrats see as payback but Republicans say was over past controversial comments.
The House voted along party lines 218-211 to remove Omar from the committee.

The House of Representatives voted to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday. The final tally was 218-211, with one member voting present. The vote was largely seen as revenge for Democrats electing to strip Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) of their committee assignments for suggesting violent action be taken against their political opponents.

House Republicans are preparing to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the Foreign Affairs Committee, with a vote coming as soon as Wednesday. Why? It could be because they just don’t really like her — for some reason! — or perhaps it’s because they want to get back at Democrats for removing Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) from their committees for suggesting violence against their political opponents.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) stood behind a lectern in the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday morning and vowed she and her fellow Democrats “will always stand up to” Republicans’ efforts to “denigrate the integrity of the House.” At the moment, those efforts had amounted to a campaign to deny her a seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where she had served since she entered the House in 2019. Standing on either side of her were a pair of congressmen who had suffered a similar fate: Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy exiled Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) from the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday. The move intensifies an ongoing game of tit-for-tat over committee assignments, and makes good on McCarthy’s vow for revenge after Democrats and a handful of Republicans voted to oust Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) from their committees in 2021.

Notorious political operator and Trump ally Roger Stone, banned from Twitter in 2017 for threatening CNN reporters, on Wednesday announced his triumphant return to the platform.
“I have just been informed that my personal Twitter account has been reinstated,” Stone wrote, adding that he would talk about it on a livestream of his show The Stone Zone. “I’m Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack,” he further bragged, attaching a photo of himself striking the V-for-Victory pose most often associated with his one-time boss and political mentor Richard Nixon.

If he is elected speaker of the House next year when Republicans take control, current Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy has promised to strip certain Democrats — Reps. Adam Schiff, Ilhan Omar, and Eric Swalwell — of their committee assignments. When asked about the possibility of losing his place on the Intelligence Committee, Schiff said that McCarthy will be forced to bend to the will of the extremists in his party.
“I suspect [McCarthy] will do whatever Marjorie Taylor Greene wants him to do,” Schiff said Sunday during an appearance on ABC’s This Week.

It turns out every politician in Washington was also staying up past their bedtimes in anticipation of Taylor Swift’s new album Midnights, and their posts might just be the thing that gets listeners to go back to bed. With 18 nights left until the midterms, engagement-hungry Democrats are harnessing every bit of star power they can to get some last minute exposure — and for better or worse these memes did a number on us, but who’s counting?
I [can’t] promise that you’ll never find another like this meme, from Senate hopeful Tim Ryan.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed legislation that provides rights to same-sex marriage, following concerns that future Supreme Court decisions could roll back precedent.
The legislation passed 267-157, with all Democrats joined by 47 Republicans in support.
The Respect for Marriage Act also would ensure rights to interracial marriage.
The bipartisan nature of the vote has given Senate sponsors hopes that the bill could clear the 60-vote threshold in that chamber, but it is unclear when or if it will make it to the floor.
After the Supreme Court’s conservative majority overturned Roe v. Wade last month, Democrats have warned that other precedents are also in jeopardy, in part because Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in his concurrence that past decisions on same-sex marriage and access to contraception should be reconsidered.

SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity Association are praising the passage Friday of the Crown Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act, Hr 2116, would prohibit discrimination in education and employment based on a person’s texture or style of hair. Several states, including California and New York, already have such laws.
“SAG-AFTRA performers of color routinely find themselves on sets where their hair care and styling needs are not met in an equitable manner with other performers,” the union said in a statement today. “This legislation will help address that disparate treatment on our sets nationwide and end this discriminatory practice in the workplace once and for all.”

“Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military?” he asked, referring to the Roman politician who helped assassinate Julius Caesar, and to the German military officer who tried to kill Adolf Hitler.

A year ago, President Joe Biden stood before a joint session of Congress to describe his soaring vision to transform the American economy. When he returned to the House chamber for his first State of the Union address on Tuesday night, that vision remained unrealized, stymied by the centrists in his party. But his calls to resurrect jettisoned elements of that agenda offered some cover to the much-maligned progressives in his party, his populist message dovetailing — at least in part — with the desires of Democrats’ left flank.

Fox News Channel said it would count on a larger group of anchors to boost one of its top shows, “The Five,” as it enjoys a new levels of viewership.
Jeanine Pirro, the firebrand former prosecutor who has held forth on Fox News’ Saturday-night schedule for a decade, will fill one of two empty seats at the network’s late-afternoon mainstay, with a trio — Harold Ford Jr., Geraldo Rivera and Jessica Tarlov — rotating as the program’s voice from the left. Those three have been filling in since the resident liberal of “The Five,” Juan Williams, parted ways with the show last May. Greg Gutfeld, Dana Perino and Jesse Watters have carried on the interim. Fifth Update, 9:37 Pm Pt: The House of Representatives passed a key part of Joe Biden’s agenda, a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill, late tonight, following a long day of wrangling to bring the legislation to a vote.
The bill now goes to Biden’s desk for him to sign.
In the end, the legislation passed with a relatively comfortable margin, 228-206, with Democrats cheering and clapping when the tally passed 218, enough for passage, and then when the final vote was announced. Thirteen Republicans joined with 215 Democrats to pass the bill.
Their enthusiasm followed a long day in which there were doubts that Democratic leaders had secured enough support to bring it to the floor, amid a standoff between different wings of the part.

New “Saturday Night Live” featured player James Austin Johnson made his mark on the NBC late-night sketch comedy series immediately from the start of the Season 47 premiere: He debuted his Joe Biden impersonation during a “special message from the president” cold open sketch.
After winning eight Emmys at the 73rd annual ceremonies last month, including the variety sketch series award for the fifth consecutive year, “SNL” returned to Studio 8H in New York City for the live premiere of its 47th season on Oct. 2. Owen Wilson was the host and Kacey Musgraves was the musical guest. Neither appeared in the cold open sketch, which you can watch below.
It was not an easy task for the newcomer, who achieved previous internet fame for his impression of former president Donald Trump, to take on the opening. He had the unenviable task of summarizing the last few months of U.S. politics in a few short minutes.

Saturday Night Live opened its new season with a new Joe Biden — James Austin Johnson — in what was probably the highest profile introduction of a new cast member ever.
The cold open skit spoofed Biden’s attempts to secure passage of his infrastructure and social agenda amid friction between the party’s moderate and progressive wings, with a momentary appearance by former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (Pete Davidson).
Johnson took over the role of Biden from Alex Moffat, who played the president for the second part of last season, succeeding Jim Carrey who did the impersonation for the final leg of the presidential campaign las fall.
Other SNL cast members and guests who have portrayed the former Vice President include Kevin Nealon, Jason Sudeikis, Woody Harrelson and John Mulaney.

The House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to move forward a key part of President Joe Biden’s agenda: a massive, $3.5 trillion budget plan to expand social programs like Medicare, tackle climate change and fund pre-k and community college.
But the narrow vote — 220 to 212 — signaled the tricky process facing the White House and Democrats in the month ahead, as leaders try to appease the various wings of the party.
A group of House moderates, led by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-nj), initially threatened to withhold their support for the budget resolution until there was a vote to pass a separate, $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package. That bill would fund such things as roads, bridges, rail and water improvements, as well as a massive expansion of broadband. In the end, what the moderates got was a promise by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to hold a vote on the infrastructure package by Sept. 27.

Overnight, millions of Americans became at risk of being evicted as a pause on evictions protecting Americans from losing their homes lapsed, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-n.Y.) says that is due to the White House not being “forthright” and moderate Democrats in Congress who refused to support an extension of the eviction ban.
Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Ocasio-Cortez said the White House was not “forthright” when it waited until two days before the eviction moratorium expired to announce that it was relying on Congress to pass legislation extending the deadline.

The congresswoman—accompanied by fellow Reps.
