2016-12-06T05:24:15-08:00'Westworld' Ends First Season on High Note
Sunday's season finale of HBO's Westworld was a ratings success, setting a new series high and ending the show's first season in positive territory. Now viewers just have to wait more than year, and perhaps as long as two years, until the next season hits the air.
The season-ending episode, which clocked in at 90 minutes instead of the usual hour, drew 2.2 million viewers to the live broadcast on the HBO cable network. When you take into account those viewers who watched Sunday night on HBO's digital streaming platforms, that number rises to 3.6 million.
Those ratings are very good for Westworld when compared to itself; the episode rose compared to last week's ratings and set a series high mark. But, more importantly, they're good numbers compared to any other HBO series. Westworld's average of 12 million viewers per...

Amy Nicholson’s award-winning short “Pickle” has no business being as funny as it is. The award-winning 15-minute short is an energetic and amusing overview of what sounds like an entirely traumatizing experience, as it chronicles 25 years of Tom and Debbie Nicholson’s unbelievably bad luck with a bevy of rescue animals, from the eponymous Pickle the fish to an entire flock of ill-fated fowl.
The film’s official synopsis strikes the appropriate balance between off-kilter humor and almost overwhelming heartache: “Let us reflect on the brief existence of Pickle the fish. Although he could not swim, he was lovingly cared for by a couple that kept him propped up in a sponge. Along with an obese chicken, a cat with a heart condition, and a paraplegic possum, his life is a celebration of man’s eternal capacity to care for all creatures. He will be dearly missed.”

The Grinder‘s Dean Sanderson is many things, but modest is not one of them. At least, that’s what we’ve gleaned from the Fox comedy’s key art, which TVLine can exclusively reveal.
The fall series stars Rob Lowe as Dean, a beloved actor who played TV lawyer “The Grinder” for eight seasons. Upon returning home, Dean attempts to pursue a real law career, much to the chagrin of his attorney brother Stew (The Wonder Years‘ Fred Savage).

Let’s be clear: The only thing Real Time The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore has in common with The Colbert Report is its timeslot.
There’s no over-the-top character here, no mock interview — at least not in Monday’s debut episode — and absolutely no beating around the bush. “A brother finally gets a show on latenight TV, but of course, he has to work on Martin Luther King Day,” host Larry Wilmore quipped before introducing the night’s theme: the apparent ineffectiveness of racial protesting.

One big question loomed as The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore presented at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena on Saturday: What is the new Comedy Central series?

“It’s a hybrid of The Daily Show and Politically Incorrect — those two types of shows,” Wilmore said of his program, which will fill the network’s 11:30 time slot left vacant by The Colbert Report.

The biggest problem I have with the Doctor Who series 8 finale, “Death in Heaven,” is really a compliment: there wasn’t enough Missy (Michelle Gomez). The female incarnate of the Master is one of the most enjoyable villains I’ve seen in a long time, on television or in the movies. She’s a wicked blend of Bond nemesis and evil Mary Poppins (with a dash of Marilyn Monroe impersonation), and it’s probably for the best that I was left wanting more. That’s usually a sign that the desired element was employed just enough. I got the impression that her “death” is more her teleporting away just in time, so it’s likely the rival Time Lord will be back in the future, but it’s unlikely that Gomez will be playing him/her. Hopefully it’s not the last we see of her in general. The current era of 007 movies could use an Irma...

Martin Odum doesn’t just go undercover in TNT’s Legends, which premiered Wednesday night – he becomes his covers, burying himself in the fabricated backstories and character quirks that come with the job.
However when Odum (played by Game of Thrones‘ Sean Bean) returns home after a months-long deep-cover assignment, a mysterious stranger tells him that what he presumes is his true identity is just an elaborate “legend” as well. Unfortunately, Odum can’t dispel that accusation since he’s beginning to unconsciously slip in and out of the many personae he’s created over the years.

I have already discussed seven new releases and one compilation in my article on the Jazz Artist of the Year, Matthew Shipp. Here are my other favorite new albums from the jazz world in 2013. Most surprising for me is the number of vocal albums, because I'm very particular about jazz singers and dislike most of them. So coming from me, the praise for the jazz singers listed here is really saying something.
1. Andy Bey: The World According to Andy Bey (High Note)
Andy Bey is my favorite living jazz singer, and he's not recorded nearly as often as his talents deserve. Now 74 years old, he has only recorded 11 albums in the course of a 50-year career (one a concert album I've never actually seen). In comparison, Kurt Elling, 46 and active for 18 years, has already made 10. It had been six years since Bey's previous album, and he's been living HIV-positive since 1994, so I was worried.
