The Goonies-inspired drama that was previously set up at Fox has moved to Disney+.
The streamer is now redeveloping the project, which the broadcast network passed on in May.
Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project, which is now known as Our Time, comes from The Bold Type creator Sarah Watson and the Gail Berman-run SideCar, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin, and studio Warner Bros.
The original project, written by Watson, began after failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. “The Goonies’ never say die” is a memorable catchphrase from that fan favorite 1980s film. But it could also describe Warner Bros. TV’s recent strategic efforts to keep some of its series alive through crafty dealmaking.
And that, coincidentally, includes “The Goonies”-inspired “Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project” that had been adapted by writer Sarah Watson into a pilot for Fox. The drama, about a teacher who helps her students re-create, shot-for-shot, the original movie, eventually was passed on by Fox, which felt it skewed too young for the network. But Variety can exclusively report that the series, which now has the title “Our Time,” is being redeveloped at Disney Plus. The Donner Company and Amblin, which were behind the original, are back on board.
“Sarah worked nonstop to deliver this incredible script, we had our table read, and then the world shut down for Covid,” says Clancy Collins White,...

National Geographic Documentary Films has acquired Oscar-nominated director Matthew Heineman’s documentary “The First Wave,” which will be released theatrically by Neon later this year.
Produced by Participant and Heineman’s Our Time Projects, the documentary will present a ground-level view inside a New York hospital amid the initial explosion of Covid-19. The “first wave” of the virus consumed the city of New York from March through June 2020.
Heineman, a Primetime Emmy winner and two-time DGA award winner, uses his signature approach of character-driven cinema vérité to document those harrowing first four months by spotlighting a group of brave healthcare workers at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens as they risked their lives in the epic battle to keep the virus at bay.
Additionally, the documentary spotlights the unequal toll of Covid-19, which disproportionately impacted people of color and the economically disadvantaged from the very beginning.

Carlos Reygada is definitely not a mainstream filmmaker. While his films are festival hits and have garnered the Mexican director critical acclaim, Reygada’s work is known for having a bit of a learning curve for viewers. However, once you understand how the filmmaker works, you’ll probably understand why many people consider his films masterpieces. And judging by the first trailer for his latest film, “Nuestro Tiempo (Our Time),” it doesn’t look like Reygada has changed much in the last six years.

Six years after Post Tenebras Lux, Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas is returning. The highly-anticipated Our Time (aka Nuestro Tiempo) will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival next week, followed by a stop at Toronto International Film Festival, and now the first trailer has landed.
The film follows Reygadas himself alongside his real-life wife Natalia López in a story of a marriage in crisis, though the trailer teases a film far more expansive than that logline, especially considering its 173-minute runtime. Shot by Diego García, the cinematographer behind Neon Bull, Cemetery of Splendor, and the forthcoming Wildlife, we know it’ll at least be thoroughly gorgeous.
Reygadas has said in a director’s statement, “When we love someone, do we want her or his wellbeing above all else? Or only to the extent that such implicit act of generosity does not affect us too much? In short: Is love a relative matter?...

Until a few years ago, the Venice International Film Festival wasn’t viewed as much of an awards-season bellwether. After the success of “La La Land” and “The Shape of Water,” it’s hard to imagine it as anything else. And while this year’s edition of the world’s oldest film festival boasts Damien Chazelle’s “First Man,” Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” and Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born,” that’s all the more reason to dig a little deeper.
It’s also worth anticipating Willem Dafoe as Vincent Van Gogh in “At Eternity’s Gate,” and Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly as siblings in “The Sisters Brothers.” But with all of those offerings generating hype across the fall festival season, the under-the-radar options look all the more enticing. Here are 10 of them. The festival runs August 29 – September 8.

“Outlaw King,” a biopic about Scottish hero Robert the Bruce, and “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” a look at an infamous literary fabulist, will both screen at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The “Hell or High Water” team of director David MacKenzie and Chris Pine reunite for “Outlaw King,” which will be the opening night gala presentation. It’s being billed as a David-versus-Goliath story, one that chronicles the Bruce’s transformation from defeated nobleman to defiant freedom fighter.
“Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” stars Laura Dern as an author who adopts a fictitious persona of Jt LeRoy, a queer man. After her book tops the best-seller list and Jt LeRoy becomes an object of fixation among the literary set, she’s forced to come to terms with the consequences of her creative nom-de-plume. Kristen Stewart co-stars in the film. “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy” will be the festival’s closing night offering.

Michael Weber’s The Match Factory is on board as sales agent of Locarno Film Festival International Competition title “Wintermärchen” (A Winter’s Tale), the company announced Tuesday. The film is German writer-director Jan Bonny’s follow-up to black comedy “Counterparts,” which played in Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.
“Wintermärchen” explores how social problems and emotional disorientation can result in violent right-wing terrorism. The film centers on a right-wing terror cell, whose members dream of nationwide attention. “Tommy and Becky are tired and disillusioned until Maik joins them. Overwhelmed by a complex relationship of love, hate and friendship their path of destruction leads to a series of violent crimes,” according to a statement.
The German-language film, which world premieres Aug. 10, stars Thomas Schubert, Ricarda Seifried and Jean-Luc Bubert. It was written by Jan Eichberg and Bonny, and produced by Bettina Brokemper at Heimatfilm, whose other titles include...

Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.

What are two individualistic, highly motivated movie stars supposed to do when faced with an unimaginative studio system eager to misuse their talents? Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen collaborate with a great writer, director and producer for an urban romance with an eye on the sexual double standard. It’s a hybrid production: a gritty drama that’s also a calculated career move.

Ever since locking the July 1 mainland Chinese release date for Our Time Will Come, producer-distributor Bona Film Group has been actively branding the film as a "celebratory gift" for the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to Chinese rule. Inspired by the real-life attempts of guerillas to evacuate Chinese intellectuals out of Japanese-occupied Hong Kong during World War II, veteran filmmaker Ann Hui's latest does sound like a perfect fit for an occasion where the dominant theme is the consolidation of the former colony's bonds with its "ancestral country."

No reason has been given for the change in opening film.

However, Our Time Will Come will still play in the Golden Goblet competition at Siff. No reason was given for the change by either the festival or the film’s producer Bona Film Group.
Both films are set in China during the Second World War. Starring Emile Hirsch and Yu Nan, The Chinese Widow tells the story of an American pilot who is shot down and saved by Chinese villagers. It remains unclear if the film has been made under the recently signed Danish-Chinese co-production treaty. August recently served as jury president at the Beijing International Film Festival.

Two days after the loss of beloved American filmmaker Jonathan Demme, the “Silence of the Lambs” and “Rachel Getting Married” director was still on the minds of everyone at the Tribeca Film Festival, including his “Philadelphia” star Tom Hanks and the man behind the film’s signature song, Bruce Springsteen.
The pair hit the Beacon Theatre on Friday evening for an hour-long chat as part of the festival’s Tribeca Talks series, and the discussion immediately turned to Demme, as the fest’s executive vice president Paula Weinstein introduced the duo and dedicated the event to Demme.

The late filmmaker Jonathan Demme, who died last night at the age of 73, will always be linked to Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. The two likeminded artists first worked together on the 1984 classic “Stop Making Sense,” a concert documentary that Byrne hired Demme to direct, and that collaboration forever transformed what the world thinks possible of such performance-driven films. More than that, the experience sparked a lifelong friendship, one that extended into several other projects and irrevocably deepened the relationship between music and movies.
This afternoon, Byrne wrote a loving remembrance of Demme on his website. We have reposted the full text of Byrne’s letter below.

“Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston and director Jonathan Demme had long wanted to work together, and came close in 2013.
Demme had tapped Cranston to star in “Old Fires,” playing a man who emerges from a coma and discovers that his family has moved on. Jason Segel and Jennifer Ehle were also attached to the film, which was written by Heather McGowan (“Tadpole”).
“It made me very sad this morning to hear the news [of Demme’s death],” Cranston told IndieWire on Wednesday. “He was such a kind man and I was so looking forward to working with him. Even though that project didn’t materialize, we were talking about other projects to do together.”
“Old Fires” ultimately didn’t move forward when Demme couldn’t secure the proper funding for the film.

The film world was deeply saddened when news broke today that Oscar-winning “The Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme had died in New York at the age of 73. Demme was a brilliant and versatile auteur, traversing genres with rarely a misfire. He is remembered by those who worked with him, and those whom his work inspired.
Tom Hanks, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a lawyer dying of AIDS in Demme’s “Philadelphia,” wrote: “Jonathan taught us how big a heart a person can have, and how it will guide how we live and what we do for a living. He was the grandest of men.” Meryl Streep, who worked with Demme on 2015’s “Ricki and the Flash,” said: “A big hearted, big tent, compassionate man- in full embrace in his life of people in need- and of the potential of art, music, poetry and film to...

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

While at CinemaCon 2017 we had the opportunity to talk to a few folks, this year hitting the Focus Features red carpet to chat with the stars and director of The Beguiled; Sofia Coppola, Colin Farrell, and Kirsten Dunst. I was standing outside the hotel room of a movie icon, unsure quite what I would find on the find on the other side of the door. It was the final day of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, and after a week of frantic coordinating with various schedulers, I’d finally managed to land an interview with Jean-Pierre Léaud. He had just played the lead role in “The Death of Louis Xiv,” and still endured the impact of enacting his death for the cameras.
Léaud became one of international cinema’s most famous faces at 14, when he starred in Francois Truffaut’s seminal French New Wave debut “The 400 Blows.” As the adolescent Antoine Doinel, who spends much of the movie acting out at school and at home while witnessing the dissolution of his parents’ marriage, Léaud quickly became the defining face of angst-riddled youth. Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson play the Mountbattens in Gurinder Chadha cheekily Downtonised but watchable version of history
‘Our time frame for leaving won’t work!” exclaims Lady Mountbatten, for a moment overwhelmed by the task of quitting India in 1947. Something familiar about that? As well as an enjoyably soapy and cheekily Downtonised view of history, director Gurinder Chadha could be offering a satirical stab at what Indexit meant to a country about to split into two as a punitive condition of liberty; maybe the UK will also have to contemplate partition of its own, north and south. With co-screenwriters Moira Buffini and Paul Mayeda Berges, Chadha creates a watchable costume drama from India’s birth agonies. And with its streak of subversive humour, it even reminded me weirdly of Spike Milligan’s Puckoon, about the division of Ireland.

Katherine Heigl‘s morning routine begins with snuggles with her 5-week old son, Joshua Bishop Jr.
The 38-year-old Doubt star was caught by husband Josh Kelley “soaking up some morning baby love,” as she wrote in an adorable mother/son Instagram shot she shared on Saturday.
It was likely payback for Kelley, who himself was caught cuddling up with his newborn son by Heigl on Monday — a sweet end to the singer’s 37th birthday.
“How @joshbkelley is finishing off his birthday, with sleepy snuggles from his namesake!” Heigl wrote in the photo’s caption, as her son slept on her husband’s chest.

Adds the Grey’s Anatomy alum, 38, “Our time is centered around being home and being together … it’s grounded. I think we just appreciate the quietness of this lifestyle. There is just more time for each other.

Timeless returns tonight with a new episode, and showrunner Eric Kripke has already been actively tweeting his excitement about the return.
Of course, he has a lot more to tweet about than new installments of his latest series.
He's also blending his love of Supernatural with that of Timeless by announcing Misha Collins will be playing Eliot Ness on Timeless Season 1 Episode 15.
The episode will be fittingly titled "Public Enemy No. 1" and will feature Flynn traveling to 1931 Chicago to pair up with gangster Al Capone.
Our time traveling trio of heroes will partner up with the only man who can bring down Capone, federal agent Eliot Ness.
“When the Eliot Ness character first came up, I immediately thought of Misha, and I’m so thrilled to be working with him again,” Kripke said in a statement.
“Misha brings his charisma, his talent, and frankly, all of his angelic qualities to the role.

This story of one of the most crushing flops to ever hit the Great White Way speaks to the ambition that drives all of us, even sometimes into a brick wall. James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

Many authors use a pseudonym to mask their real identity or to place distance between the text and themselves, but no one creates an entirely new identity with different experiences and actually send them out into the world. Well, that’s exactly what Laura Albert did. The 40-year-old San Francisco former phone-sex operator turned housewife created a literary persona named Jt Leroy, who took the world by storm with his “exploits” about his sordid childhood mired by prostitution, drug addiction, and vagrancy. The new documentary “Author: The Jt LeRoy Story” chronicles Albert’s creation from the height of LeRoy’s fame at fashion events and rock shows to the New York Times pulling the rug out from under the story. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

When it comes to games that came out of nowhere, Furi has been one of the biggest surprises this year. We had the chance to go hands-on with it last month at E3, and walked away with anticipation for the full release. Our time with the game was limited, but it’s fast paced action and emphasis on tight, responsive controls sat well with us. What we didn’t expect however, is that the final version would excite and surprise us even more.
Furi prefers to keep the story light and vague, but it works well for an action-focused title of this type. You take control of a mysterious samurai named The Stranger, whose driving goal is to escape the prison he finds himself in. The Stranger’s journey through the prison world he inhabits is an interesting one; rather than working your way through level after level, Furi is entirely composed of boss fights,...

Anne Marie is tracking Judy Garland's career through musical numbers...
Our time travelling comes to an end this week with a movie that was filmed before The Harvey Girls but, due to expensive reshoots, wasn't released until months later. Ziegfeld Follies (not to be confused with Ziegfeld Girl) is a plotless series of excuses for MGM to throw its considerable stable of talent into a series of comic and musical sketches tailor made to show off the stars - and the studio - at their finest.
The Movie: Ziegfeld Follies (1946)
The Songwriters: Kay Thompson (lyrics), Roger Edens (music)
The Players: Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, William Powell, Esther Williams, directed by Vincente Minnelli
The Story: According to rumor, originally this enjoyable little slip of a number was designed for Greer Garson. However, when Garson backed out, it became a number about Garson, lampooning her accent, image, and Oscar-bait dramatic roles.

Need to catch up? Check out last week’s recap here.
Damn, Braniel: Back at it again with satisfying the fans!
After last week’s sweet look back at Winterfell life (Benjen! Hodor Wyllis!), I eagerly awaited Bran’s next dip into the pensieve with the Three-Eyed Raven on Game of Thrones. And yes, I’d heard fans buzzing about the much-anticipated Tower of Joy scene, but the HBO drama wouldn’t go there so soon after its drop-the-mic-wake-the-Lord-Commander moment at the end of last episode… would it?
