Gene Roddenberry's celebrated sci-fi TV series "Star Trek" debuted on September 8, 1966, and recently celebrated its 57th anniversary. Initially, "Trek" wasn't terribly popular, and only managed to make a third season thanks to a coordinated letter-writing campaign (a campaign that Roddenberry was accused of orchestrating and encouraging himself). It wouldn't be until after "Star Trek" was canceled in 1969 that its popularity would significantly begin to grow. Thanks to a sweet infinite syndication deal, "Star Trek" reruns were common, and a cult began to form. By the early 1970s, the first "Trek" conventions began to appear. Naturally, conventions were a great place for the show's stars and creators to congregate and share production stories with a rising tide of obsessives. Fans were able to talk to and get autographs from William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, Majel Barrett, Walter Koenig, George Takei, James Doohan, and Grace Lee Whitney, as...

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.
Here’s everything leaving Max in August 2023

Character actor and voice actor Earl Boen had a long list of credits, working on nearly 300 different projects over the course of a career that began in 1974. But for most movie fans, Boen will always be remembered for playing the role of Dr. Peter Silberman in The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, T2 3-D: Battle Across Time, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Sadly, it has been confirmed by Deadline that Boen passed away in Hawaii yesterday, January 5th, at the age of 81. A friend of Boen’s and his family revealed that Boen had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in the fall of 2022.
Born on August 4, 1941, Boen made his screen acting debut in a 1974 episode of the PBS series Great Performances. The many credits he racked up after that appearance include the films The Main Event, Battle Beyond the Stars, 9 to 5, Soggy Bottom USA,...

Warner Bros. Discovery has had a rough go of it recently. The newly-formed mega corporation’s decision to callously prune HBO Max’s servers of hours of content has led to mountains of bad PR and billions of dollars in market cap losses. Suffice it to say, a jam-packed list of new HBO Max releases for September 2022 would provide some welcome relief for the “House of the House of the Dragon.”
Unfortunately, HBO Max’s new releases this month are uncommonly light. It’s impossible to say whether this is the result of more Wbd meddling or simply some bad scheduling luck but either way it’s not going to make any executives’ seats less warm. There are only a handful of notable originals this month, led by season 2 of the Spanish language comedy Los Espookys on Sept. 16. That is joined by a pair of documentaries, Escape from Kabul on Sept.

It's always fun when something happens in real life that we realized was unexpectedly predicted in a movie first. ScreenRant has released a new video that points out ten of these films that accurately predicted certain events that came to pass. Some of the films included in the list include The Cable Guy, The Truman Show, Minority Report, Back to the Future Part II, Blade Runner, Airplane II: The Sequel, and more.

Looks like we picked the wrong week to quit celebrating milestones.
Hard to believe it's been 35 years since "Airplane!" took flight (on July 2, 1980) and taught us all to speak jive, order the chicken instead of the fish, and avoid calling each other "Shirley." Three and a half decades later, the airline disaster parody remains one of the funniest films ever made, one that generations of viewers have watched over and over -- though probably never as an in-flight movie.
Still, as many times as you've seen it, there's much you may not know about how it was made. In honor of "Airplane!" turning 35, here are a few facts every fan must know about the comedy classic.
1. Strip away all the jokes, and "Airplane!" is essentially a remake of a little-known 1957 air disaster movie called "Zero Hour!" The writing/directing team of Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker lifted the plot,...

The original Airplane! certainly ranks as one of the greats in the comedy genre. An undeniable classic, it perfectly utilized the then-bourgeoning slew of survival disaster films and threw them into a blender of satire and sharp, dry wit that would set the bar high for generations to come. Its 1982 follow-up, Airplane II: The Sequel, however. not so much. In fact, it was an unmitigated disaster at the box-office. This is something that the original film.s directors, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, saw coming, as they not only passed on making the film, but haven't even seen it to this day! Now, in a recent interview, one of the directors has provided a rather blunt, hilarious reason why the latter is still the case. In an interview with Yahoo!, David Zucker, one of the comedic directorial trio behind classics like the original Airplane! as well as the...

Some sequels are doomed to live in the shadow of the hits that triggered them. Here are a few examples...
Following up a successful movie with a sequel is a tough proposition for any writer or director, and it's often the case that such follow-ups fail to recreate the magic of their predecessors. But sometimes, sequels can offer a different yet entertaining experience of their own, and it's even possible that, if they didn't happen to share the same name as an earlier hit film, they might even have been better received.
This article's dedicated to a few of these kinds of films. They offer lots of excitement, comedy, jolts of terror and a smattering of great performances, and might have fared better with audiences and critics had they not been sequels. At the very least, they attempted to do something a little different than the films they followed. While other examples undeniably remain,...

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"Much Ado About Nothing"
What's It About? Joss Whedon's ("The Avengers") modern retelling of the Shakespeare classic follows two couples with different takes on romance. Benedick (Alexis Denisof) and Beatrice (Amy Acker) are older and disdainful of their love, while the sweet young Claudio (Fran Kranz) and Hero (Jillian Morgese) are deeply absorbed by their love.
Why We're In: Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing" is a refreshing and charming take on the classic comedy for its unique blending of the Shakespearian dialogue with a contemporary setting and aesthetic. While it sticks to the original content and doesn't add anything wholly revolutionary, it's nonetheless an entertaining addition to the canon of Shakespeare film adaptations.

Ebert's scripts: 'sexploitation' cult fare As found on the IMDb, Roger Ebert wrote scripts for a total of three movies, "sexploitation" fare directed by maverick independent filmmaker Russ Meyer. The first of those was Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, which follows three young (and good-looking) women who find sex (lesbian and straight), drugs (of various sorts), and unhappiness in Hollywood. Distributed by the then-daring 20th Century Fox (Fox also released Raquel Welch and Mae West's Myra Breckinridge that same year), Beyond takes Jacqueline Susann's trashy bestseller Valley of the Dolls and its 1967 Mark Robson-directed filmization to an even higher degree of tacky campiness. Among the movie's cast members were Dolly Read, Cynthia Myers, Marcia McBroom (all three seductive beauties are pictured above), John Lazar, and frequent presence on the Academy Awards red carpet, Edy Williams. The second Roger & Russ collaboration was Up!, a movie whose tagline...

Chad Everett, the classically handsome actor remembered for playing thoracic surgeon Dr. Joe Gannon on the 11969-76 CBS drama Medical Center, died Tuesday at his Los Angeles home, reports the Los Angeles Times. He was 75 and had battled lung cancer the past year and a half, one of his daughters told the Associated Press. Though the surgeon's scrubs fit him like a glove, Everett also had TV roles on The Love Boat, Murder, She Wrote, Melrose Place, Cold Case, Supernatural and, most recently, the series Castle. There are many reasons why some characters in the movies seem a bit familiar. Sometimes, the actor has become so badly typecast that they only seem to play one character, as Matthew Perry and Hugh Grant seemed doomed to do in the 1990s (before Perry was cast in short-lived TV series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Grant in the Weitz brothers’ About a Boy, 2002). Sometimes a character is transferred completely from television to film, as Leslie Nielson’s Frank Drebin was from Police Squad to The Naked Gun series. But sometimes the reference, while deliberate, is more subtle.
An ‘Actor Allusion’, as defined on TV Tropes, is a casting in-joke or reference which refers to a previous role the actor has played. In most cases, the reference is a throwaway line or two and proceeds from the happy coincidence of that actor having been cast in that role (for example,...

A tough crowd at the Bifas, why Airplane II should have been an entirely different movie, and avoiding the wrath of Nina Simone
Cheer up, it's an awards ceremony
Martin Freeman hops off to New Zealand in January to play Bilbo Baggins. He was at the Bifas last week, and at BBC London radio, following me around like a little hobbity thing. Go to Middle-earth, I said, and seize your huge break of a role. "I'll give it a go," he said. You don't seem too happy about it, I ventured. "Oh, well," he said, perking up a bit, "I'll try to do as good a job as possible and not muck it up." Freeman clearly fears being away from his lovely family for so long but will nevertheless be in good company in New Zealand, with Bifa host James Nesbitt, whose new head of hair looked surprisingly good, I thought.

Today Universal released Get Him to the Greek, a sort-of sequel to 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall as it uses Aldous Snow who had a small role in the original. Beyond that, there is only a brief reference to Sarah Marshall, which has me thinking it's not really a sequel as much as it is a spin-off. The same could be said for a movie like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)... Same characters, but not really a sequel to Clerks, which ended up having its own sequel in 2006.
In a debate with a group of fellow Seattle critics trying to decide if Get Him to the Greek was a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall or not, the topic turned to comedy sequels in general and I was asked to name a great comedy sequel. Should be easy... right?

Actor Peter Graves was best known for his starring role as Jim Phelps, leader of the Impossible Mission Force, on the popular television drama series Mission: Impossible, from 1967 to 1973. He took over as star of the series from Steven Hill with the second season.
Graves was also a leading actor in science fiction films in the 1950s. He spoke with bible-quoting Martians in the 1952 Cold War thriller Red Planet Mars, and battled bug-eyed aliens in Killers from Space in 1954. He fended off a creepy Venusian invader in the Roger Corman cult classic It Conquered the World in 1956, and saved the country from gigantic grasshoppers in 1957’s Beginning of the End.
He was born Peter Aurness in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on March 18, 1926. He served in the United States Army Air Force near the end of World War II.

He was quite the Hollywood icon, and over the weekend “Mission: Impossible” star Peter Graves passed away. The 83-year-old actor had returned home from having brunch with his family on Sunday afternoon when he collapsed and died of what’s believed to be a heart attack.Graves was best known for his role as Jim Phelps in the television series “Mission: Impossible,” though he would later go on to spoof himself in the films “Airplane!” and “Airplane II: The Sequel.” Surviving Peter are his wife, college sweetheart Joan Graves, and his three daughters Amanda Lee Graves, Claudia King Graves, and Kelly Jean Graves.

Peter Graves, best known for his role in the 60s TV spy drama Mission: Impossible as well as the Airplane! films, has died.
Graves passed away on Sunday, just a few days before his 84th birthday, outside his home in Los Angeles, his publicist, Sandy Brokaw, said. Graves was returning from brunch with his wife of nearly 60 years and his family when he had what Graves's doctor believed was a heart attack, Brokaw said.
Graves first gained attention with the 1950s TV series Fury, but remained best known for the role of Jim Phelps, leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil conspirators in TV's Mission: Impossible.
Graves appeared in dozens of films and a handful of television shows in a career of nearly 60 years.

Sad news out of Hollywood. Actor Peter Graves, star of TV's "Mission: Impossible," died yesterday in his Pacific Palisades home at the age of 83. Graves; first credited role was 1951's "Rogue River." He went on to log more than 100 film, television and video game performances, including high-profile gigs like Imf team leader Jim Phelps on "Mission: Impossible" (which earned him a Golden Globe), cowboy Jim Newton on NBC's '50s Western series "Fury," turncoat Price in Billy Wilder's "Stalag 17" and, of course, the comically perverse airline pilot Capt. Clarence Oveur in "Airplane!" and "Airplane II: The Sequel."
"Airplane!" and its sequel were one of those staples for anyone who grew up during the '80s. Along with Leslie Neilsen, Graves' scenes are among the most memorable. Such as the Abbott & Costello-inspired Oveur/Unger/Dunne crew introductions and Oveur's played-for-comedy fascination with gladiators, Turkish prisons and naked men. Graves...

As we all know, so many of the films coming out of Hollywood these days are based on established properties, often classic television series of the '60s and '70s. So in a sense, the Hollywood of today owes a debt of gratitude to the Hollywood of that bygone era, filled as it often was with fresh, groundbreaking concepts that today's baby boomers hold dear to their hearts. From the creators and producers, to the writers and actors, these individuals made lasting impressions on popular culture.
And so it was with actor Peter Graves, who's starring performance in one of Hollywood's most famous TV shows, Mission Impossible (1966-73) helped catapult creator/producer Bruce Gellar's CBS series into the upper echelons of television popularity. Sadly, Graves died yesterday of an apparent heart attack outside his Los Angeles home, a week away from his 84th birthday.

He had just returned from having brunch with his family when he collapsed, Brokaw said. Although one of his daughters administered CPR, she was not able to revive him. Graves's most famous role is perhaps that of Jim Phelps, who led a group of special agents who undertook dangerous - and seemingly impossible - missions in...
