When Cameron Crowe began work on Jerry Maguire, he’d scored only modest success as a director with Say Anything and Singles, but he was still best known as the writer of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. So, when Tom Cruise was approached for the lead role in the film, there were no indications that Jerry Maguire would be a blockbuster. But Cruise found Crowe to be intriguing, both as a director and as a person. Speaking at the time of the film’s release, Cruise talked about how much he’d enjoyed the process of making a movie with Crowe. (Click on the media bar below to hear Tom Cruise) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Tom_Cruise_Making_-Jerry_Maguire.mp3 Jerry Maguire is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

It’s sad to say, but death seems to be working overtime as we close out 2023. Following the news that beloved character actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away, come the passing of two more well-loved supporting players in TV and film. Richard Romanus, who played the role of loan shark Michael Longo in Mean Streets, passed away at the age of 80 on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, has also passed away, also at 80.
Although Richard Romanus had a lengthy career that went back to the early ‘70s, it was his turn in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets that remained his most memorable performance. It was his character who, after a run-in with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy (who owed Michael money), manned the car that drove up alongside Johnny Boy and Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, leading to the shooting of the loose cannon.

Jennifer Aniston went through a very difficult time after her tumultuous divorce from Brad Pitt. But fortunately this 2005 rom-com seemed to be exactly what she needed to heal.
Jennifer Aniston found doing ‘The Break-up’ very cathartic Jennifer Aniston | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Aniston didn’t miss the irony in being offered The Break-up after her very public divorce from ex-husband Pitt. The film saw Aniston starring alongside Wedding Crashers star Vince Vaughn as a couple forced to live together after separating. When she was first offered the picture, she couldn’t help laugh at it. But she quickly realized she was only able to do the movie because of her past relationship troubles.
“The irony of it? Well, yeah, it’s pretty ironic,” Aniston once said according to China Daily. “At the time, it was something I thought about it. When I first got the phone call that a movie called The Break-Up was coming,...

When Nicolas Cage first started out, having made his big screen debut in 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High, he went credited as Nicolas Coppola, his given name. As the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage could use that name to hit the fast track to Hollywood fame…and the cast of Fast Times never let him live it down.
In a new book called “How Coppola Became Cage”, author Zach Schonfeld details that exact evolution of Nicolas Cage, beginning with Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But it wasn’t Sean Penn or Judge Reinhold or even Phoebe Cates who hazed Cage – still a teenager – but rather Eric Stoltz, whose character doesn’t even have a name. As Stoltz put it, Cage took some teasing because of his occasional name-dropping. “Nick was one of the younger ones…He was big for his age, and he was quite bold and animated.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High is one of the most influential movies of the eighties. It was the first classic teen comedy of the decade, but unlike many other teen-focused flicks, it aspired to be a realistic depiction of what teens go through. In fact, the movie was based on a book by a young Cameron Crowe (who adapted the screenplay) who went undercover as a teen and wrote about his experiences. The movie tackled teen sex, pregnancy, abortion and drugs without any of the doom and gloom the topic would have been presented with had it been made by just about anyone else at the time.
Directed by Amy Heckerling, the movie featured an incredible cast of future stars, including Sean Penn as the stoner icon Spicoli, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates (whose nude scene became one of the most rewound moments of the VHS era), Forest Whitaker,...

Making a top ten list of your favourite movies can be difficult, but is it any easier when you narrow that list down to a single decade? IndieWire asked dozens of filmmakers to put together a list of their favourite 80s movies, and the results are as widely varied as the decade itself. Which 80s movies does Bill Hader hold dear to his heart? What are some of Nia DaCosta’s favourites? Can Edgar Wright actually contain himself to just ten movies? What horror movies of the 80s top Eli Roth’s list?
Bill Hader’s (Barry) Favourite 80s Movies:

Seconds after Jamie Lee Curtis walks through the door at Wigmaker Associates in Beverly Hills on a pre-strike July morning, the recently minted Oscar winner comes face-to-face with an army of famous names. There are rows upon rows of them, monikers covering heads made of canvas blocks that atelier owner Rob Pickens and his staff use to custom-make wigs worn by Ana de Armas in Blonde, Millie Bobby Brown in Stranger Things and Amanda Seyfried in Mank.
“I see many of my friends,” declares Curtis as she scans the shelves, pausing to pay special attention to one in particular. “Hi, honey! Here’s my sweet,” she says, planting a kiss on the one named Christopher Guest, her filmmaker husband since 1984. Then Curtis spots another. “I just worked with [Margo Martindale] on a fabulous show called The Sticky. It’s weird when you’re my age, you know all these people.

When the trailer for Gene Stupnitksy’s No Hard Feelings made the rounds online, it felt like a mild event. Not only for a return to big theatrical releases for star Jennifer Lawrence, but also a return of the big-budget, theatrically released sex comedy, a genre that has been mostly relegated to streaming. It was great to see one of the few remaining stars who can draw an audience throw her considerable influence behind a straight-up comedy.
But for No Hard Feelings to salvage comedy it must actually be funny. And overall it is. Lawrence plays Maddie, a 32-year-old Uber driver whose car is repossessed for her failure to pay property tax. She answers a Craigslist ad that offers to trade a Buick as payment for “dating” the owner’s sheltered son, Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman). Maddie takes on the assignment to find Percy is not the horny teen she expected,...

Amy Heckerling's 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," written by Cameron Crowe, is a coming-of-age film that contains far more embarrassment and ambivalence about the teen experience than any expected notes of wistful nostalgia. The Ridgemont High students don't always make good decisions and find themselves stumbling toward sexual liberation and an adult sense of agency. They are trying to achieve some sense of dignity, which is difficult when your sexual encounters are mortifying and you have to wear stupid costumes to your minimum-wage job. They're not good kids or bad kids. They're complete people. It's the film's sense of emotional honesty that likely has it firmly ensconced in the pop consciousness. Its comedic moments are but icing on the cake.

The teen sex comedy craze kicked into overdrive in the spring of 1982 when Bob Clark's semi-autobiographical raunch-fest "Porky's" stunned the industry by racking up 105 million for distributor 20th Century Fox at the U.S. box office. The nation's critics shredded it, but the film's target audience didn't care. They identified with the characters' unabashedly juvenile antics, and kept going back for more.

High school goes by pretty fast, but even executives at Universal Pictures couldn’t remember their own teen glory days when distributing “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”
The 1982 classic film celebrated its 40th anniversary on August 13. And while the movie, helmed by Amy Heckerling and penned by Cameron Crowe, launched the careers of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forest Whitaker, Sean Penn, and Nicolas Cage, among its star-studded ensemble cast, actor Judge Reinhold alleged Universal was wary to even release it in the first place.
“We were really heartsick because somebody high up said, ‘This is pornography, and there’s no way that Universal’s going to release this movie,'” Reinhold told The Hollywood Reporter. “We didn’t see it as this horny high school movie at all. We saw it as having the opportunity to do something authentic that was based on the actual experiences of the kids that Cameron chronicled for that whole year.

It’s not that Sabrina Carpenter was putting up a front in her music before, it’s just that she — a Disney Channel actress since age of 13 — was “programmed” to be confident “till the day I die.” With her new music, Carpenter changes out the Disney-girl chip and lets the unfiltered thoughts in her brain run free, even if it places her in a place to be judged. She’s gotten used to that, anyway.

Just as previous installments of Stranger Things evoked the likes of E.T. and The Goonies, the Netflix hit’s third season was chock-a-block with even more 1980s movie references, nods and influences. How many did you spy?
Of course, you had a stone-faced, relentless assassin in the vein of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator. And at one point, two characters break the tension by belting out a duet from a certain fantasy film. Heck, even Fast Times‘ bikini-clad Phoebe Cates puts in an appearance (of sorts).
But among the dozen-plus films cited in this ’80s kid’s own, off-the-top-of-my-head list...

The third season of Stranger Things is shaping up to be something special. Not only will it take place during the summer of 1985 – a stark departure from the cold, bitter Halloweens of past episodes – but the first few trailers and videos have already teased some interesting cultural references and connections. Gross age differences aside, the recent “poolside” clip heavily borrowed from a similar scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and some of the show’s creative staff have hinted this upcoming season will feature elements from Back to the Future – whether that means cosplay or actual time travel remains to be seen.
Interestingly, a new fan theory has surfaced which proposes a connection between Stranger Things and the Chernobyl incident. As reported by Comicbook.com, Reddit user Singular94 has suggested with the third block of episodes set in mid-1985, a potential fourth season should take place the following year,...

The Strokes’ Albert Hammond, Jr. reminisces about gloriously aimless, adolescent nights on his new song, “Fast Times.”
The track boasts the distinct vibe of the earliest Strokes records, with Hammond, Jr. cutting a bright rhythm guitar part with languid, buzzing riffs. Looking back on his teenage years, Hammond, Jr. keeps his lyrics playful as he captures the simple thrill of having nothing to do with no parents around: “School’s out now/Found a ride/Saw some friends/We got high.”

One of the oldies celebrated by lovers of ’80s fare, Martha Coolidge’s ode to pampered teens in La La Land has aged extremely well. It’s still fairly representative of reality, but the romantic fairy tale angle is what keeps it afloat. Nicolas Cage’s unguarded vulnerability and Deborah Foreman’s infectious smile win the day — we like these kids, even if they’re somewhat idealized.

Though Fast Times at Ridgemont High featured so many talented young actors in its cast — many of whom have gone on to have incredible careers in Hollywood — Sean Penn managed to steal every scene he was in as the slacker/stoner Jeff Spicoli. The movie certainly jump-started Penn’s career, and 36 years later, he [...]

Attention Duuudes! It's been 36 years since Fast Times at Ridgemont High first hit theaters — and it remains one of the coolest teen movies of all time! After all this time, we decided to see what Sean Penn, Phoebe Cates, and the rest of the Ridgemont High students have been up to since 1982. While there was never a sequel of the hit movie, it did inspire a spin-off called Fast Times in 1986, which featured popular actors including Patrick Dempsey, Claudia Wells, and more. The series sadly only lasted seven seasons. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) That said, we're craving another Fast Times movie, although, we're not sure if it will ever happen — and if it does, Sean seems like he'd sit it out. While the '80s was a booming time in Sean's career, he recently revealed that he's basically close to retirement because he no longer enjoys working in Hollywood. "I...

Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)

Screenplay: Cameron Crowe based on his book
I think the best high school movies are not the ones that show the over-the-top journeys of a few drunk, stoned, and/or sex-crazed low-life students going to have the defining life-changing moments with their best friend’s slutty mom or whatever, insignifcant pitiful high school goal they aim for.… but instead the better films are the ones that are more slice of life films, the ones that show just how nieve and stupid we were when we younger and how that influenced but didn’t necessarily defined our life. If you ask Freud, we have already had...

Simple Minds! The Moldy Peaches! Yello! Here are 20 of the most memorable musical moments from the greatest high-school films ever
The visuals of a poolside Phoebe Cates peeling off her bikini top might be more famous than the song that accompanies them, but Amy Heckerling and Cameron Crowe, Fast Times’ director and writer, were no slouches when it came to finding the perfect guitar riff for this early slice of music video-style slo-mo that – legend has it – became the most rewound scene in VHS history.

Beyond Jerry Bruckheimer's The Rock and Con Air, here are a handful of Nicolas Cage films worth seeking out.
It’s very easy to get lost with Nicolas Cage. With ‘Cage Rage’ memes, the tales of celebrity eccentricity (remember when he turned on Bath’s Christmas lights?) and the continued fascination surrounding his unmade Superman film, you’d be forgiven for losing sight of the fact that he’s a bona fide, megawatt movie star. On March 9 he’s back with a new role in Brian Taylor’s Mom and Dad, playing a father who violently turns against his own offspring during an outbreak of parental mass hysteria.
In the hands of Crank co-director Taylor we get to see two sides of Cage: the understated everyman and the off-the-scale rage machine. It’s this kind of role, beyond the blockbuster carnage of The Rock and Con Air,...

This article marks Part 4 of the 21-part Gold Derby series Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
After “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” in 1981, Meryl Streep lined up two exciting projects for the following year, both lead turns and both given prime late-year release dates for Academy Awards consideration.
First on tap was Streep’s much-anticipated reunion with “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979) director Robert Benton. “Still of the Night” would mark her first big screen thriller to date, pairing Streep with two-time Oscar nominee Roy Scheider. Exciting, right? Well, the Benton picture came and went that November in the blink of an eye, failing to even crack the box office top 10. Not only were reviews for the film itself lukewarm but critics argued both...

Filming on David Gordon Green’s Halloween continues apace, and to prove it, Andi Matichak (Orange is the New Black) has shared a behind-the-scenes shot straight from Haddonfield High.
Posted via Instagram (h/t Bloody Disgusting), the candid pic is likely lifted from one the film’s happiest moments, long before Michael Myers slices and dices his way into Haddonfield. In keeping with the franchise’s cherished legacy, Nick Castle will make his return as Myers, mask and all, while stunt performer and actor James Jude Courtney is expected to embody the otherworldly nutjob.
Matichak, meanwhile, plays the part of Allyson, a studious teen swept up in the terror. It’s all set to begin in October – fitting, really – and the following pic (seen in the gallery below, along with a few previously released ones) came bearing the caption: “Fast Times at Haddonfield High.” Fast times, indeed.

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we look back on Cameron Crowe‘s ‘Almost Famous‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Almost Famous (2000)
Director/Screenplay: Cameron Crowe
I remember saying that Cameron Crowe, who based “Almost Famous” on his own experience as a Rolling Stone journalist touring with bands like ‘Led Zeppelin‘, and ‘The Allman Brothers Band’, that he was luckiest son-of-a-b*tch kid of all-time. I realize now just how talented he had to have been to accomplish all that he did before he was even allowed to drink, back when the drinking age was 18. There’s no doubt that ‘Almost Famous,’ is not only his best film, but his most personal, and this coming from an already well-established filmmaking career, with ‘Jerry Maguire,’ ‘Say Anything,’ and the script for ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High,’ already on his resume before making this film.

By the time Cameron Crowe made Singles in 1992, the 35-year-old director was already a decade into his career's second act. A former journalist for Rolling Stone, he'd pivoted towards the movies after adapting his book about going undercover at a Los Angeles high school – Fast Times at Ridgemont High – for the screen in 1982. And his directorial debut, Say Anything... (1989), proved that he had a knack for capturing teen spirit.
Crowe, however, wanted his audience to grow up with him, so for his follow-up movie, he turned his attention to twentysomethings.

Amy HeckerlingThe films of Amy Heckerling reveal a heart guarded and tender, a penchant for the past without a whiff of the maudlin. Who could forget her debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High? Directed from Cameron Crowe's script, the 1982 film gave us frank portrayals of sexuality and the detailed minutiae of growing up, suspended in the hazy tedium of high school, all without condescension or patronizing. Totally righteous. Heckerling proved attuned to the particulars of comedy with her next feature Johnny Dangerously (1984), a waggish send-up of the 1930s gangster comedy. In its cheeky beginning, a 1935 title card reveals itself to be a real material object that crumbles when car crash obliterates its façade. With a darkened lash line, a young Michael Keaton puts forth his best James Cagney as the titular mobster whose identity and status are known to all but his ailing ma and brother, a rising assistant Da.

The Do Something Awards aren’t your average self-congratulatory Hollywood back-patting-palooza. Sure, there were celebrities and prizes. And press. And time-filling banter, limos and designer dresses. But a closer look revealed subtle differences like the bold chartreuse carpet instead of the standard stretch of red rug, the “overwhelming amount of positivity in the air” as honoree Jennifer Hudson pointed out and the fact that Kelly Osbourne was there to collect a trophy instead of critique couture.
