"Young Justice" currently sits in limbo after its fourth season wrapped on Max. There's more story to tell, but Warner Bros. hasn't given creator Greg Weisman the greenlight to tell it. But hey, "Young Justice" has come back from worse! Cartoon Network outright canceled the show after season 2 finished airing in 2013.
"Young Justice" has the same premise as "Teen Titans" (soon to be a movie from DC Studios). The sidekicks of DC Comics form their own team. Then, each season skips ahead in time and the show's true design is unveiled. "Young Justice" isn't just a show about the sidekicks, it's Weisman's epic about the entire DC Universe, following heroes and villains as they age and fall, and new ones rise.
The DC Animated Universe shows were a big part of my childhood. If I can pinpoint why I love DC Comics, it's those shows. However, I didn't watch them as they aired,...

Ben Affleck’s Only Horror Movie Was So Bad It Couldn’t Even Earn More Than $10 Million at Box Office
Ben Affleck’s done a lot in Hollywood, you know? He’s been in all sorts of movies, from those big action flicks to the tear-jerker dramas. But when the 51-year-old dipped his toes into horror with Phantoms back in ’98, it didn’t quite hit the mark.
Ben Affleck in Justice League
The movie just couldn’t grab people’s attention, making less than 10 million bucks at the box office. Even though it had a cool idea and Affleck’s star power, Phantoms just didn’t live up to the hype, ending up as one of those forgettable horror flicks. It’s kinda curious why folks didn’t vibe with it and what it says about the actor’s career in movies.
Ben Affleck’s Sole Horror Movie Outing Was a Complete Flop
Ben Affleck tried his hand at horror, and let’s just say it didn’t end well.

The Phantoms episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Jaime Vazquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Ah, the late 1990s, a period of horror renewal, massive hits, and plenty of scares. Well, yes and no. Some films like the Scream franchise hit it big, like really big, and others, not so much. One of the failures of the late 1990s box office is Phantoms (watch it Here) which was considered a massive flop. How did Phantoms become considered one of the biggest flops of its era? Well, it’s a mix of a lot of factors, most of them easily guessed by those who have had the pleasure, or displeasure, of seeing the film. The story here is that of a small town where the whole of the population has vanished,...

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Silver Scream Con returned to the Doubletree Boston North Shore in Danvers, Massachusetts on September 8-10 — ’cause let’s face it, baby, these days you gotta have a sequel!
Created by horror-inspired metalcore band Ice Nine Kills, Silver Scream Con has quickly established itself as a top-tier horror convention among celebrity guests and attendees alike. “Everybody’s been really nice, and I’m enjoying myself immensely,” said Tommy Lee Wallace, who created Michael Myers’ iconic mask for the original Halloween before going on to direct Halloween III: Season of the Witch. “I hope everyone gets the shit scared out of them!”
Not even severe thunderstorm alerts could stop the rabid fans, who traveled not just from all over North America but as far as Finland, Scotland, and England to attend. Ticket sales reportedly doubled from the previous year’s already-commendable showing,...

James Gunn’s band of galactic rascals are proving their worth at the box office as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 enjoyed the best second-weekend hold of any sequel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second-best among any MCU title, according to final weekend numbers.
From Marvel Studios and Disney, the threequel grossed an estimated $62.6 million from 4,450 theaters in its sophomore outing, a mere 47 percent decline and more than enough to crush the competition (that’s up from Sunday’s estimate of $60.5 million, a 49 percent decline). In more good news, the pic crossed the $200 million mark domestically to finish Sunday with a cume of $215.6 million.
Overseas, Guardians 3 took in another $91.9 million from 52 markets for a foreign tally of $315.6 million — including a pleasing $58.4 million from China — and $530.9 million globally.

Hypnotic, who?
It’s unusual, to say the least, for a movie directed by the likes of Robert Rodriguez and starring Ben Affleck to barely be a blip on the radar of new movies opening the box office.
This lack of awareness helps explain why Hypnotic opened to a scant $2.4 million from 2,118 theaters over the May 14-16 weekend to mark the worst nationwide opening of any film directed by Rodriguez or starring Affleck. Hypnotic stands to lose tens of millions, after costing a reported $65 million to make, and reinforces what every savvy Hollywood studio executive knows: spending on marketing is essential.
The sci-fi action-thriller suffered several setbacks on the road to the big screen, capped by the implosion of Solstice Studios in late 2021, which had been set to market and release the film.
Solstice, led by indie veteran Mark Gill, had been counting on Hypnotic to forge its future. But...

The Legend of Zelda’s title is a bit of a running gag. For a game named after one of its title characters, players rarely get to control the titular Princess Zelda. Usually, fans step into the boots of Link, and Zelda’s role is essentially that of a magical MacGuffin. But there are exceptions.
Mods notwithstanding, gamers get to play as Zelda in a few official titles. The most obvious example is, of course, Super Smash Bros. Zelda and her alter ego Sheik have been playable parts of the franchise ever since Melee, and many players love using them to dominate arenas (or knocking them out of bounds). But what Legend of Zelda games let players save Hyrule as Princess Zelda? There aren’t many, and they aren’t all great, but unless Tears of the Kingdom features a big playable surprise, these are the only official (and one...

Director Ari Aster's 2018 debut feature -- the psychological horror "Hereditary" -- is a raw and ruthless portrayal of grief. Seasoned actress Toni Collette was brought on to play Annie, the matriarch of the Graham family, as she spirals into a disturbing emotional state of despair following the death of her daughter, Charlie (Milly Shapiro).
Collette is no stranger to portraying stressed-out and emotional characters. She's portrayed multiple personalities as a suburban mom struggling with Dissociative Identity Disorder in "United States of Tara", worked as a single mom whose child could see ghosts in "The Sixth Sense", and fought to keep her family together while being attacked by evil Christmas toys and elves in "Krampus." To put it bluntly, Collette has been through multiple circles of Hell -- cinematically speaking. And yet, her role in "Hereditary" as a grieving miniaturist was her most challenging yet.

Peter O'Toole's acting career spanned seven decades and involved hundreds of roles, a million sardonic smirks, and no small amount of liquor. On screen, O'Toole could be heroic, villainous, affable, and off-putting, sometimes all at once. In interviews, O'Toole was frank and unguarded, quick with a jibe, and unwilling to suffer fools. O'Toole and his frequent collaborator, the actor Richard Harris, have both appeared on many talk shows toward the ends of their lives to tell many, many stories of getting drunk together.
Somewhere along the way, O'Toole garnered enough fame and clout to more or less select any project he wanted. By the time he starred in Peter Medak's "The Ruling Class" in 1972, O'Toole had already appeared in 18 feature films, including a James Bond movie. That same year, O'Toole would appear in "Under Milk Wood" and a film adaptation of "Man of La Mancha." One might say...

This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.
Young Justice Season 4 Episode 22
Remember all those kidnapped kids last season?
Markovia, vaguely eastern European home to Brion Markov, was briefly home to a metahuman trafficking ring led by Baron Bedlam. They kidnapped kids, soaked them in super goo, and the ones who lived had their meta gene activated. They were then sold to various partners through Bialya, including to Darkseid, Granny Goodness, and the hordes of Apokolips.
Turns out one of those kids is the Kaizer-Thrall.
“Rescue & Search” is the first episode of the last arc of Young Justice: Phantoms. It’s the first to focus on Nightwing, though it’s a reunion of sorts of the original team. Zatanna brings Dick her theory that Conner is trapped somewhere, still alive and hidden. Dick and Z take a trip back through this season, connecting with Artemis, Rocket, and eventually Aquaman, and unravel...

The following contains The Flash spoilers
The Flash Season 8 Episode 9
After three standalone “interlude” episodes, the larger story of The Flash Season 8 finally begins to unfold with “Phantoms,” an hour that finally circles back to the ongoing story of Iris’ time sickness even as it ramps up the mystery of the strange black fire that is mysteriously burning Central City residents to a crisp.
The revelation that the supposed “Fire Meta” is actually some kind of bizarre new entity that feeds on human emotions—specifically grief and despair—and may not actually be a meta at all leads the show into surprising new narrative territory. Is it some sort of sentient emotional monster with a deep-set survival instinct? A science experiment gone wrong? Something else entirely? Whatever it is, its presence means that all the members of Team Flash will likely have to go to some very dark emotional places this year.

Real-life pals and would-be kissing buddies Matt Damon and Ben Affleck broke out as not just actors but also writers thanks to 19997's "Good Will Hunting," a drama that landed the pair Oscars for their original script. It also snagged an Academy Award for Robin Williams' performance as Sean Maguire, the haunted therapist who connects with the equally tormented academic prodigy Will Hunting (Damon) and gets him to open himself emotionally over the course of the film.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! In this space last week, we tossed around the Best Supporting Actress race — a conversation that is already moot with the news that Caitriona Balfe is going into the supporting race for “Belfast.” We discussed that already *this* week, and both think she very well could win the whole damn thing come spring of next year — a sign of potential great news for “Outlander” stans. So let’s instead hit what could either be the year’s most chaotic race or a pedestrian category that we have to slog through for another five months: Best Supporting Actor. Ben Affleck is an accomplished actor, producer, writer and director, proven by his two Academy Awards. So why does social media chatter generally refer to each of his new and effective outings worthy of Oscars consideration as a “comeback?”
In the middle of his newest film “The Last Duel,” it dawned on me. Nothing regarding his interpretation of Count Pierre d’Alençon should work with his sensibilities as an actor. Yet he completely steals the show in one of three segments designed to belong to Jacques Le Gris (played by Adam Driver). Unfortunately, the Hollywood machine, critics and consumers have taken his abilities for granted. Perhaps it was the paparazzi’s focus on Bennifer or his openness regarding his struggles with sobriety. Either way, he’s shown himself, on multiple occasions, an uncommonly invigorating actor when placed in the right hands.
My realization came three days after a BAFTA member...

This review of Julie and the Phantoms contains no spoilers.
Probably the only thing you need to know about Julie and the Phantoms before going in is that its executive producer is Kenny Ortega. If that doesn’t instantly ring a bell – well, he’s the guy who directed the High School Musical movies, the Descendants movies, and, of course, the evergreen Halloween classic Hocus Pocus. This nine-part supernatural teen drama is the first of his projects for Netflix, and it’s just as charming, warm, and finger-snappingly musical as you’d expect.
Julie (newcomer Madison Reyes) is a 15-year-old singer-songwriter who recently lost her mother. Her grief has put a damper on her creativity, and as a result she’s close to getting kicked out of her school’s prestigious music program. Then she meets cute up-and-coming indie rock band Sunset Curve and rediscovers her voice. Her teachers are impressed,...

In the trailer for Enola Holmes, which was originally eyed for a theatrical release but instead will debut on Netflix, the setting is 1884 England – a world on the brink of change — when just-turned-16 Enola (played by Brown) wakes to find that her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has disappeared, leaving behind an odd assortment of gifts but no apparent clue as to where she’s gone or why.

The case of Viena and the Fantomes is a mysterious one. After earning worldwide acclaim with his intense thriller Miss Bala in 2011, Gerardo Naranjo embarked on his follow-up, a music drama starring Dakota Fanning, Caleb Landry Jones, Zoë Kravitz, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jon Bernthal. Shot back in early 2014, aside from a leaked trailer, there have been no updates regarding a festival premiere or release and in the meantime, the Mexican director shot an entire new film, which just premiered at Tribeca Film Festival.
Now, we’ve finally got news on Viena and the Fantomes as Universal Studios Home Entertainment have announced it is arriving digitally on June 30. The story follows Fanning as Viena, a young roadie who’s on a journey of self-discovery and shocking survival, as she travels across America with a punk band during the 1980s. Perhaps the behind-the-scenes story of this one will be more fascinating than the film itself,...

On her 2019 Dreaming Lucid Ep, singer-guitarist Ambar Lucid gracefully inflected her alternative R&b sounds with no-nonsense, Spanglish sincerity. This Thursday, she set the date for her full-length sequel, Garden of Lucid, due out April 10th via indie label Finding Everest.
The new album includes previously released singles “Questioning My Mind” and “Fantasmas,” as well as the latest track, “Story to Tell.” A work of pure, dembow-pop reverie, “Story to Tell” sees Lucid dreaming of life beyond her mundane, teenage routine — and how quickly those dreams are materializing. “I always...

Phantoms’ (1998): Starring Ben Affleck and Rose McGowan, the 1998 film adaption of Dean Kootz’s novel recounts the tale of small-town Snowfield, Colorado plagued by a subterranean entity known only as the Ancient Enemy. The visiting Lisa Pailey (McGowan) and local law enforcement officers team up to combat the mysterious force and to revert the town back to peace and well-being. Though “Phantoms,” directed by Joe Chappelle, makes for cheap thrills with some unexpected jump scares, its convoluted storyline and shoddy special effects job warrant more laughs than screams.
Mirrors’ (2008) Alexandre Aja’s “Mirrors” follows former NYPD officer Ben Carson (Kiefer Sutherland) turned abandoned department store night guard as he attempts to unravel the demonic background of his new workplace and protect his loved ones. While “Mirrors” presents an eerie narrative idea, it’s been panned for tripping on itself with an over-complicated plot, botchy dialogue and unnecessarily graphic imagery — making an overall unsatisfactory spook.

Roddy Ricch’s emerald-and-acorn-colored eyes keep darting to the door. Seated in an all-white dressing room in New York, the Southern California rapper, 21, has the distinct look on his face of someone who doesn’t trust anyone in his immediate vicinity. He’s a quiet, perceptive presence; there’s a low hum radiating off him at all times. A few months ago, when I spoke to him over the phone, he refused to reveal his government name. But this time, for some reason, a few weeks before the release of...

The Dean Koontz novel “Strangers” is in development as a one-hour drama at Fox that hails from Jeff Davis.
“Strangers” tells the story of several different people, thousands of miles apart, from different walks of life, finding themselves struck by unusual fears and sudden phobias. A novelist in California suffers unbearable sleep terrors. In Boston, a surgeon’s intense panic attacks threaten her career. A priest in Chicago dreads the rise of the moon. An ex-Marine develops a paralyzing fear of the dark. They’re all connected by a forgotten trauma, repressed memories now surfacing and leading each of them to one destination: a small motel in Nevada where a dark secret lies hidden–one that could change the course of humanity itself.
Fox has given the project a script commitment with a penalty attached. Davis will write and executive produce, with Koontz and Josh Berman and Chris King of Osprey Productions also executive producing.

Imagine a punk-rock variation on feminist theorist Laura Mulvey, speeding through a patriarchal kingdom and howling truths to the people. That’s Rose McGowan, who’s been sandblasting her way through the promotional circuit this week to promote her memoir, “Brave,” and the E! series “Citizen Rose.” Once written off as a shrill loon, she’s developed a homegrown culture jamming, rejecting conventional etiquette in a quest to destabilize masculine conventions.
“I use language to pierce the brain,” she said. “If I spoke like everybody else spoke, it would just dull everything. I might just know what I’m talking about.”
McGowan comes to her current role after a lifetime of experience. She spent the first stage of her acting career contending with performances that restricted her potential and simmered with silent rage against the misogynistic industry that put her on the map. She survived childhood in the Child of God cult,...

Harvey Weinstein has an issued an official statement through his lawyer, Ben Brafman, in which he denies Rose McGowan’s allegation that he raped her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. In order to try and prove that McGowan is lying about the incident, Weinstein and Brafman released emails from Ben Affleck and McGowan’s former manager Jill Messick that don’t corroborate with McGowan’s story.

McGowan writes about the alleged rape for the first time in detail in her just-released book “Brave.” The activist says that she was invited to Weinstein’s suite at a hotel in Park City, Utah where she was told the two would be meeting to talk about her career. When she arrived at Weinstein’s suite, however, the studio executive pulled her into a room with a jacuzzi and took off her clothes.

Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister on HBO’s fantasy drama, divulged her own experiences with the disgraced film mogul on Tuesday, noting that she felt “completely powerless” during one encounter with Weinsten. Actress Joanna Going (“Mad Men”) appears with her in the image. “Phantoms” was directed by Joe Chappelle and starred Ben Affleck, who McGowan told.

RoseMcGown Says She Was Dropped by her Agent for Criticizing an Adam Sandler Role Being Cast.
Rose McGowan is a bold, confident woman. After listening to her episode of the Bret Easton Ellis podcast, I gained a newfound respect for her. She’s always been around, in my cinematic adventures, from Scream to Phantoms to Planet Terror. Judging from her personality to which I found insight from the aforementioned podcast, the fact that she was outspoken enough against something she strongly believed was incorrect is not that shocking to me.
It seems that McGowan is one of the few people in Hollywood that will speak up, regardless of status or power. And let’s be serious here – she isn’t the hottest thing in Hollywood. She isn’t getting the best roles. But you know what? She’s creating work for herself. She’s directing films, getting into film festivals,...

First up, Ben Affleck on playing Batman in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice:
EW: So what it’s like to portray Batman?
Ben Affleck: I’m right in the middle of shooting now. It’s a process that I’ll probably have better perspective on when I’m done. I can tell you that every time I do a role, it’s the responsibility of an actor to get their physical self as close to the role as possible. And Batman’s obviously got a set of expectations that are tough. So I spent a lot of time working out. And it’s a far cry from Gone Girl where my character is described as “puffy and hungover.

That the currency you've built up over your past few projects makes it a slightly easier sell?

This upcoming month, there are two interesting genre titles playing on Fearnet that you should take note of; 'Eden Lake' and 'Dahmer.' Why? Because they both represent early movies for actors that have proved to be outstanding performers in the arts long before they honed their craft. In the case of 'Eden Lake,' the film is fronted by Michael Fassbender, long before he played Magneto in the 'X-Men' films, stole the show in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' & played the android David from 'Prometheus' with such cold, calculated perfection. Also, you can catch 'Dahmer,' the bio pic from director David Jacobson, which stars Jeremy Renner in one of his first cinematic lead roles. Now he's an Avenger in the Marvel Universe! So it got me thinking about other examples of successful stars you may have totally forgotten were in genre films.

It's strange how intermittently bestselling novelist Dean Koontz has been adapted, and how those adaptations—from the early Ben Affleck joint "Phantoms" to the Jeff Goldblum starring psychological thriller "Hideaway"—have been almost uniformly horrible. Koontz doesn't have the way with characters or the homespun prose of his contemporary Stephen King, but he sells almost as many books. And most are written in a singularly straightforward, cinematic style that should make big screen adaptations easy and accessible (his late '90s techno-thriller "Dark Rivers of the Heart" was the best movie James Cameron never made). So calling "Odd Thomas" the best Dean Koontz adaptation yet feels like damning it with faint praise, but it's true. Too bad it's barely getting released. Koontz's string of bad luck continues. "Odd Thomas" is based on the first in a series of books starring the titular character, a small-town fry cook whose abilities to...

He may be an acclaimed filmmaker, but even Ben Affleck himself would tell you he's starred in a few flops in his time. From forgettable rom-coms like "Bounce," "Jersey Girl" and "Forces of Nature," to action and horror duds like "Reindeer Games" and "Phantoms", and of course - "Gigli".
Yet in an interview with Playboy, Affleck says that while he'd "probably have two or three" roles he regrets, it's only one failure that still really haunts him - the Marvel superhero film "Daredevil":
"The only movie I actually regret is Daredevil. It just kills me. I love that story, that character, and the fact that it got fucked up the way it did stays with me. Maybe that’s part of the motivation to do Batman."
In fact it's because of Daredevil's failure that he understands the online backlash against him playing Batman:
"I understand I’m at a disadvantage with the internet.

The overlooked greats of the year 1998 come under the spotlight in our list of its 25 underappreciated movies...
Dominated as it was by the financial success of two giant killer asteroid movies, gross-out comedy hit There's Something About Mary and Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, 1998 proved to be an extraordinary year for cinema.
Okay, so history doesn't look back too fondly on Roland Emmerich's mishandled Godzilla remake, and Lethal Weapon 4 was hardly the best buddy-cop flick ever made, despite its handsome profit. But search outside the top-10 grossing films of that year, and you'll find all kinds of spectacular modern classics: Peter Weir's wonderful The Truman Show, John Frankenheimer's rock-solid thriller Ronin, and Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line.
