A new episode of the Real Slashers video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at a film that has earned a solid cult following despite the fact that it’s only available in a cut down, TV-friendly version. It’s Cherry Falls (watch it Here) from the year 2000, and you can hear all about it by checking out the video embedded above.
Directed by Geoffrey Wright from a screenplay by Ken Selden, Cherry Falls has the following synopsis: A small-town sheriff, Brent Marken, discovers the presence of a serial killer in his sleepy hamlet. Since the perpetrator has been targeting only virgins, both male and female, the deaths cause panic in much of the local high school population. Sheriff Marken’s daughter, Jody, is among the potential victims, since she has yet to sleep with her boyfriend, Kenny Ascott. Can the lawman stop...

The Dracula 2000 episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Horror in the year 2000 was something. Yeah, that’s it, it was something. A lot of it happened, some of it was great, some of it was good, and some of it, not so much. Actually, if the internet crowd is to be believed, the early 2000s, especially the year 2000 were abysmal for horror. We did get a few memorable films released in 2000 like the first Final Destination film, Cherry Falls, Ginger Snaps, The Cell, and American Psycho. However, the scales had some serious bad on the other side to balance it all out. Films like Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Hellraiser: Inferno, Christina’s House, and Dracula 2000 (watch it Here) came and...

It is 2023, and streaming services are constantly in our faces and on our TVs and devices. Whether it be Max (or The Artist Formerly Known As HBO Max), Apple TV+, Disney+, Paramount+, or old stalwarts like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, it seems like we have unlimited options for content.
But even with genre-specific services like Shudder and Screambox, free-services full of movies like Tubi, or deep cut catalogs like The Criterion Channel or Arrow Player, there are still many movies which are not currently available on any service, so we have to call physical media in for the rescue.
Here are 5 excellent horror movies that are not available to stream, rent, or buy on any digital service, but do have excellent physical media Blu-ray and 4K Uhd releases.

From Freddy Krueger to Annie Wilkes, iconic villains with memorable backstories are a hallmark of popular horror media, but there’s more than one way to terrify audiences. For example, some horror flicks task viewers with unmasking the mysterious antagonist alongside our main characters in scare-centric whodunit mashups.
And with the continued success of the Scream franchise proving that audiences are hungry for more mystery alongside the traditional blood and guts, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six lesser-known whodunit horror flicks for your viewing pleasure.
Since this list is meant to highlight underseen scary movies, we won’t be including more popular whodunits like the original Friday the 13th, Happy Death Day or any of the aforementioned Scream films. However, feel free to comment below with your own favorite whodunit horror flicks if you think we missed a particularly underrated one.
Now, onto the list…...

It's difficult to overstate the immediate and overwhelming effect that Wes Craven's 1996 film "Scream" had on pop culture. By the mid-1990s the slasher genre had pretty much come to an end. The most popular monsters of the 1980s were being deliberately killed off, as "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" and "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday" seemingly closed the door on their respective franchises. The slasher series that continued started to die of fatigue, as seen in clunky, underwhelming films like "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers" and "Hellraiser: Bloodline."
Then, in December of '96, "Scream" came out and a new trend was immediately born. The Kevin Williamson-scripted "Scream" was a slasher movie, yes, but it was populated by teenage characters who all knew -- and spoke openly about -- the tropes of slasher movies. Everyone was wry, sarcastic, and understood the metafictional situation they occupied.

After The Blair Witch Project came along in 1999, it feels like the independent horror boom of the 2000s was almost a direct result of that film’s success. Throughout this decade, we saw so many writers, directors, and other industry creatives get the opportunity to establish themselves and chart their course in Hollywood, and so many of those folks are still continuing to have a huge impact on what’s going on in the genre world these days as well.
The start of the new millennium proved to be an interesting time for horror, but especially indie horror. So many may not realize it, but American Psycho was initially an indie project that went through years and years of development before Lionsgate picked up the rights to Bret Easton Ellis’ book and moved forward on the project with Mary Harron at the helm. Even David Twohy’s Pitch Black started off as an indie film,...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, and doing the honors of introducing me to a new (to me) horror movie this month is Dax Ebaben, a fellow Philly/Jersey boy who has bylines at Bloody Disgusting, Film Cred, and Gayly Dreadful. Podcast listeners may also recognize him from Watched Once, Never Again, a show Ebaben co-hosts with previous Lstbd guest Mary Beth McAndrews to discuss movies too dark or disturbing to allow for repeat viewings. Their tagline, “We’re traumatizing ourselves so you don’t have to,” is basically made for softies like me who are intrigued by the darker corners of horror but don’t have the emotional fortitude to visit them too often.
Fortunately, Ebaben isn’t taking me too far down a traumatizing rabbit hole for this month’s movie. Instead, he’s leading me through a portal into a magical slasher realm where...

In a year of uncertainty, with the literal horror film about a seemingly unstoppable deadly virus happening outside our front doors, reconnecting with movies on streaming networks, going to virtual film festivals, and returning to the sacred sanctum of the movie theater was pure joy. Horror took new forms in 2021, with fearfully fantastic and dreadfully reality-driven stories. 2021 found new ways to approach recurring themes of isolation, desperation, and the fear of the unknown. Films about religion, urban legends, culture, society, ecology, demons, slashers, and even automotive sensuality brought intriguing visions to beautifully horrific life. This year was undeniably a unique experience for genre fans. This list is my favorite horror from 2021.

Cherry Falls (2000)
You have sex, you die. That’s one of the hard rules of horror laid out by video-store geek Randy (Jamie Kennedy) in Wes Craven’s Scream. It’s also the very cliché subverted by one of that movie’s best (but least seen) imitators. Directed by Geoffrey Wright, of Romper Stomper fame, Cherry Falls puts a clever spin on a common slasher trope: The homicidal maniac on the loose in a quiet Virginia community is only targeting virgins, meaning that the chastity that traditionally protects kids in this genre is the very thing putting them under the knife. So what’s a town of scared, horny teenagers ...

Coming on the heels of the post-Scream slasher movie renaissance, director Geoffrey Wright’s 2000 effort Cherry Falls had a difficult journey to find an audience. Rejected for an R rating by the MPAA despite several rounds of cuts, the movie was unable to secure theatrical distribution and wound up premiering in an even more truncated form in the States on the USA Network in 2000 (it received a theatrical release overseas). Over the course of the next 15 years, though, the movie developed a well-deserved cult audience who recognized it for being one of the better slashers to come out of that second wave.

Going against Randy Meeks’ rules for surviving a horror film, the killer in Cherry Falls (2000) seems to only target virgins. Ahead of its March 29th Blu-ray release from Scream Factory, Cherry Falls is teased in high-definition clips and a trailer.
From Shout! Factory: “A serial killer is stalking the peaceful town of Cherry Falls. At first, it seems that he is just targeting teenagers, but after the third killing it becomes clear that all the victims have been virgins. When the town’s students hear about this, they realize that there is only one way to protect themselves and begin planning a “Pop Your Cherry” party where they will all lose their virginities together. Meanwhile, Jodi (Brittany Murphy, Clueless, Sin City), the virtuous daughter of the town’s sheriff (Michael Biehn, Aliens, Grindhouse), decides to take matters into her own hands and trap the killer herself.

"Lose your innocence... or lose your life." In October, Scream Factory announced the upcoming high-definition release of the cult horror film Cherry Falls, and now they have revealed new cover art for the movie and marked March 29th, 2016 as the film's Blu-ray debut date.
From Scream Factory: "Happy Monday everyone! Check out the new cover art for Cherry Falls that will be on our upcoming blu-ray release next year and comes courtesy of illustrator Joel Robinson (Nightbreed, Ginger Snaps, The Serpent and the Rainbow). We felt strongly that this underrated slasher needed a fresh coat of paint since it never really had a compelling one-sheet design to begin with. We're very pleased with the results and hope you are too.

Across the ages, slashers have been one of the most successful sub-genres of horror. From Halloween’s Michael Myers in the 1970s, slashers remained strong throughout the ’80s with Jason (and his mother), until evolving into post-modern horror delight with the Scream franchise in the late ’90s-’00s. Despite being incredibly formulaic, somehow having a bunch of teens running away from a serial killer is something that audiences can’t get enough of. Thankfully one doesn’t need a big budget to meet these demands, so there probably won’t be any kind of slasher death soon.
As with all genres, you’re going to have classics, but you’re also going to have some diamonds in the rough that fall by the wayside in terms of mainstream popularity. Plenty of horror buffs are bound to know a lot of the films on this list, but for some...

Looking back, we can remember plenty of high school horrors, and combination skin is just one of them. There were a lot of possibilities for this list, and we've got 9 of our favorites listed below. But we would have to flunk ourselves if we didn't turn in an honor roll of honorable mentions.
Of course another Lucky McKee film, The Woods, has to be listed, as does Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And those vivacious vixens from The Craft turned up the heat in their high school, and nobody - and we mean nobody - survives Cherry Falls.
And now, on to the...

The 90s revival can’t be ignored any longer. The nostalgia is in full bloom right now: walk down the high street and you’ll see 90s-inspired crop tops and stonewashed denim in every shop window, while current cool kids Iggy Azalea and Charli Xcx (neither of whom were old enough to see the film at the time) have paid slavish tribute to Clueless in the video for their current single Fancy. We’ve already pillaged the ‘80s for all they were worth and now, apparently, it’s time to start excavating the 90s. No matter how old that makes us feel.
If there’s one film genre that screams “90s”, it’s the teen movie. The decade was a kind of golden age for the...

Sosie Bacon may only be 21, but she has a lot going for her. On top of being 2014's Miss Golden Globe, through her father Kevin Bacon, she is connected to nearly everyone in Hollywood - including every other previous Miss Golden Globe, most of whom are also the daughters (or sons) of industry power players. And while some have a connection through their famous parents, others, such as Laura Dern (who happens to have famous parents), are also connected through their own work. Don't believe us? Here's how you get from young Ms. Bacon to all of her famous predecessors,...

File this one under really strange. Star Brittany Murphy passed away back in 2009. Several months later in 2010 her husband, Simon Monjack, died as well. Both causes of death were listed as natural - pneumonia and anemia. Now that doesn't seem to be the case.
According to The Wrap, Brittany Murphy’s father, Angelo Bertolotti, long suspected that she and her husband died not of natural causes, but of poisoning by someone out to kill them. Bertolotti sued to gain access to her hair samples and hired a private lab, the Carlson Company, to look for signs of poisoning.
“It’s a bona fide report,” the lab’s general manager, Denny Seilheimer, told the site. “It was our client’s prerogative to release the report. That’s all I can tell you.” The lab found evidence she was poisoned — probably by “a third party perpetrator with likely criminal intent,” according to the report,...

Written by Lotti Pharriss Knowles and directed by John V Knowles, Chastity Bites is a new horror-comedy that has recently shown to great crowds at film festivals around the world. The husband-wife team has also been involved with Automat Pictures' Jeffrey Schwarz in the production of his last few documentary features, Vito, Spine Tingler: The William Castle Story, and I Am Divine.Chastity Bites is their debut as a writing-directing team, and I'm pretty psyched to see it. If the trailer is to be believed, the film looks to ride the line drawn by films like Cherry Falls, Excision, Teeth, and Saved. This sort of farce addressing moral rigidity is right up my alley. Chastity Bites has already played the Lund Fantastic Film Festival, the Philadelphia...

A Priest, A Rabbi and Your Mom Walk Into a Movie Theatre…
You might think that your Mom disapproves of all horror films on principle. At least that’s the stereotype: the wagging finger; the warning that horror films cause nightmares. But the truth is that this is merely a bit of parental judo, reverse psychology designed to push us to watching horror films, because nothing warns us and upholds the moral order like a horror film.
What are the elements of a horror film after all? There is a monster; there is a sense of danger (as critic Joe Bob Briggs puts it “Anyone can die at any time”); the deaths are usually gruesome; and there is usually a moral. If you think about it, fairy tales and horror films are not that far apart – they are even closer to one another in the fairy tales original Grimm-er forms,...

New Todd Phillips-produced movie Project X follows three teenagers' wild house party – but can they live up to the standards set by film's most debauched bashes?
Can't Hardly Wait (1998)
The 'Become The Person You Want To Be' party
The climactic high-school graduation party has been a teen movie staple since the late 70s, but rarely has a film detailed the intricacies of this most drunken rite of passage with quite as much affection as this. Boys become men, nobodies become legends, and jocks become refreshingly self-aware as the student body of Huntington Hills High abandon their established cliques forever.
Beverage of choice
Beer, large quantities thereof. Funnels optional.
High point
The arrival of "Watermelon Guy" (a pre-fame Jason Segel) and his beloved vodka-marinated fruit.
Low point
The next morning, when reformed jock Mike Dexter (Peter Facinelli) slips back into his old ways.
Caligula (1979)

Democracy is a flawed concept. Here are 50 films that the IMDb voters would unfairly have you believe are worth no more than 5.9/10…
Six out of ten isn’t a very good score, really. It’s barely over half marks. 60 per cent. It’s alright, but it’s not great. You wouldn’t be proud of getting six out of ten on most kinds of tests, would you? So you might assume that any film that scores under six stars out of ten on the IMDb isn’t very good – possibly even terrible.
But that’s not always the case. Averages don’t tell the whole story; anything that’s potentially controversial or divisive will end up with a score that suggests most people weren’t that bothered about it, since high and low scores will be averaged – and IMDb users often exaggerate their scores anyway, giving a film one star...

Those plucky fellows over at Entertainment Film Distributors have nabbed the rights to Andy de Emmony's new Brit horror comedy 'Love Bite'. The West End Films production, penned by Ronan Blaney and Cris Cole, stars the sexy Jessica Szohr -below ('Piranha 3D') and British actors Luke Pasqualino ('Skins') and Ed Speelers ('A Lonely Place to Die') and is currently in post-production after filming up in Scotland. The movie seems to be using the idea of virgin slasher flick 'Cherry Falls' but replacing a psycho killer with a pesky lycanthrope. Check out the plot details below and keep it here for more on the project....

The Ronan Blaney and Cris Cole-penned horror/sex comedy Love Bite begins shooting this October under the direction of Andy de Emmony. Jessica Szohr, Ed Speleers ( Eragon ) and Luke Pasqualino will star. Szohr was seen in last year's Piranha 3Dd . Sounding very much like the werewolf version of Cherry Falls , the film - according to THR - is about "four friends who find their dead-end town in turmoil after a bloodthirsty werewolf starts gnawing local virgins. The quartet subsequently realize that losing their virginity might provide the best route to survival." Shooting will take place in Scotland.

Things are about to get hairy for Jessica Szohr.
The "Gossip Girl" beauty will soon be wolfing out in the new horror comedy, "Love Bite," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Love Bite" takes place in the dead-end town of Rainmouth, where the local young folk believe a series of gruesome murders is the work of a werewolf feeding on virgin flesh. Suddenly, the only way to stay safe is to get laid... or is it?
Yeah, it sounds like it's basically "Cherry Falls" (remember that one?) but with a werewolf. Awesome!
Szohr joins a cast that includes Edward Speleers ("Eragon") and Luke Pasqualino ("The Borgias."). The bloody/sexy mayhem will be overseen by television director Andy de Emmony.
Jessica Szohr is best known for her role as Vanessa Abrams on "Gossip Girl" and was one of the hapless swimmers of "Piranha 3D." She'll next be seen with Sarah Jessica Parker...

Final Destination 5
Directed by Steven Quale
USA 2011
First things first, I was 20 when Final Destination hit cinemas back in 2000. Having been one of the few who revelled through the Dawson’s Creek slasher era of the 90’s with the Scream trilogy, I Know What You Did Last Summer and it’s sequel, Urban Legend, Valentine, Cherry Falls, etc, etc – even I found the spin Final Destination gave to the genre to be a breathe of fresh air. But that initial film had no idea what it had started or how the ridiculous set-ups would become all that the sequels would hinge upon.
Part 2 did the job perfectly – faster, nastier, stupider and with a killer sense of humour. Part 3 was fun but disposable and then came Part 4, so cleverly named The Final Destination (presumably a spin on The Fast & Furious 4 being renamed Fast & Furious at the time). It was a...

It’s the second part of our interview with Michael Biehn, in which he talks about his acting in The Abyss and Tombstone, and his first feature as director, The Victim…
As the first part of our interview demonstrated, the great, under-appreciated actor Michael Biehn has enjoyed a lengthy and varied acting career. His fruitful partnership with James Cameron continued after the success of The Terminator and Aliens, with the pair teaming up again for The Abyss.
Here, we talk to Biehn about the making of that 1989 epic of sci-fi, working with James Cameron, passing on Point Break, and defending strippers in his directorial debut, The Victim…
I’ve always admired your loyalty to James Cameron. And then you went on to work with him on The Abyss (1989), and I remember you’ve always defended his working style, especially after reports of a few egos getting bruised during the filming of that film.

Subject: Michael Biehn, 53-year old American actor (turned writer and director)
Date of Assessment: March 2, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Intensity, ability to speak wordless volumes, James Cameron
Negative Buzzwords: Lack of star power, James Cameron
The Case: Upon initial contemplation of this week's subject, the first question that springs to mind is this: What the hell ever happened to Michael Biehn? Such an involuntary reaction is based upon an assumption that Biehn's a relatively lost visage of the 1980s; but anyone who's been paying attention would realize that Biehn's been (for the most part) working steadily as an actor even though his big-time blockbuster roles have long since ceased to exist. Naturally, he came from humble beginnings by steadily landing a lot of television work, including both regular series (even an "ABC Afternoon Special") and made-for-tv movies before moving into feature films. Upon arrival within the celluloid realm, Biehn initially appeared to...

I just had the recent pleasure of interviewing director Jacob Knapp about his upcoming horror/comedy Down With The Boogey starring Alex Gasboro, Gary Gustin, and Emily Caruthers. Just going off the trailer alone, this film definately has some cult potential along the lines of Student Bodies. For more info. into this film, make sure to visit the film's fan page by Clicking Here.
For those unfamiliar with you, who is Jacob Knapp?
That's a good question. I should have my friends answer that one for me. I know that I love my family and my friends. I always try to to make everyone else happy both in my life and in film. I'm a big horror and comedy buff. I don't know what else to say except... talk and hang out with me to know me?
So you have a movie, Down with the Boogey, that is about to make the film circuit scene.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Send it to aftereltonflyingmonkey@yahoo.com! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Recent discussions about "appropriate" gay movies for high school students got me thinking about how many gay movies include full frontal male nudity. I'm not complaining. When it's part of a sensual sex scene, I get it. But, for example, watching Redwoods, I noted that Everett's brother and partner both get naked at different points in the movie, and in neither case did it really enhance the plot or was it necessary for the scene. Why do you think male nudity is so prevalent in gay movies? Is it the obvious reason that the audience appreciates it? Is it more of a sociological reclaiming of the types of nudity that women endure in straight films all the time? Or are the directors just pervy? – George, Cambridge, Ma...

From the age of five she was determined to be a Hollywood star
It has become something of a rite of passage for any young actress fresh on the Hollywood scene to be pencilled in to play Janis Joplin. Brittany Murphy, who has died unexpectedly aged 32, was one of several performers over the years who were attached to one Joplin biopic or another.
In this case, it was Piece of My Heart, for which Murphy auditioned successfully in 1999, but which was never made. It certainly was not much of a stretch to imagine her evoking the gusto and vulnerability required for that part.
Murphy was no run-of-the-mill star. In her first substantial role, as a greenhorn mentored by the coolest girl in school in the 1995 hit Clueless, she proved herself an inventive exponent of comedy. She demonstrated her versatility in dramatically intense films such as Girl, Interrupted and 8 Mile. She...

Various sources broke the news this morning that actress Brittany Murphy has died. The 32-year old actress was found unconscious in the shower this morning by her mother, and was deemed to be in full cardiac arrest by paramedics who responded to the call.
