The team behind beloved feminist podcast Witch, Please has launched a new flagship show, Material Girls, a scholarly podcast about pop culture.
Upon the conclusion of an eight-season run of Witch, Please (a podcast teaching critical theory through Harry Potter), hosts Hannah McGregor and Marcelle Kosman turn their academic expertise towards new objects of study in the zeitgeist.
For fans of Witch, Please and shows like Pop Culture Happy Hour, Maintenance Phase and You’re Wrong About, Material Girls offers a fresh approach to discussing pop culture of the past and present by asking: Why this, why now? Why do we like what we like, and what can pop culture teach us about how the world works?
“In every episode we begin with a piece of pop culture that has been a major part of the zeitgeist, whether that’s the Queer Eye reboot in 2018 or Barbie dolls in the 90s,...

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to the WWII-era romantic drama I’ll Find You from director Martha Coolidge. The Anthem Sports & Entertainment company plans to release the title starring Adelaide Clemens (To the Stars), Leo Suter, Stephen Dorff, Connie Nielsen and Stellan Skarsgård in theaters and on demand on February 25.
Inspired by true stories of Polish musicians from the 1930s and 1940s, I’ll Find You centers on the tender, music-infused relationship between Robert (Suter) and Rachel (Clemens) that is forged when the pair meet as music school students—he, a promising singer and she, a violin prodigy. While Robert is torn away from Rachel following the German invasion of Poland, he vows to find her, no matter the cost.
David S. Ward and Bozenna Intrator penned the script for the film, which was shot on location in Poland and New York. Intrator also produced it alongside Lukasz Raczynski, Zbigniew John Raczynski and Fred Roos, with Alexander Roos exec producing.
“I’LL Find You is a beautiful romance film set against the harsh background of World War II,” said Gravitas Ventures’ Manager of Acquisitions, Brett Rogalsky. “What director Martha Coolidge was able to do with these elements is truly impressive, and we’re excited to be able to bring this film to the public.”
“From the beginning I loved the theme in this film that music has an almost magical power to heal,” added Coolidge, “and that it can inspire and move all people even those at opposite ends of the ideological spectrum.”
Coolidge is an Emmy nominee and DGA Award winner who has previously directed films including Material Girls, The Prince and Me, Angie, Lost in Yonkers, Rambling Rose, Plain Clothes, Real Genius and Valley Girl, along with episodes of such series as Siren, Angie Tribeca, Madam Secretary, The Night Shift, Psych and Weeds.
Gravitas Ventures was founded in 2006 and sold to multi-platform media company Anthem Sports & Entertainment in November. Recent releases from the company include Michael Lembeck’s Queen Bees; Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s Our Friend, starring Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson, and Jason Segel; Vanguard, directed by Stanley Tong and starring Jackie Chan; and Andy Tennant’s The Secret: Dare to Dream, starring Katie Holmes. Gravitas has also recently acquired titles including Adrian Martinez’s feature directorial debut iGilbert; the Kathy Bates drama Home, from writer-director Franka Potente; family adventure film The King’s Daughter, starring Pierce Brosnan; Jason Pollock’s doc Finding Kendrick Johnson; and The Accursed, a horror film marking the feature directorial debut of writer-directors Elizabeta Vidovic and Kathryn Michell.

“Cats” looks like it’ll dominate the Razzie Awards this weekend, but there’s one category where it will probably be mercifully passed over: Worst Actress. The movie musical’s leading lady, newcomer Francesca Hayward, will be spared the ignominy of a win at these kudos. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Hilary Duff will win for playing the title role in “The Haunting of Sharon Tate” instead.

Think that three-carat cushion-cut diamond engagement ring that Matthew Koma just gave Hilary Duff is impressive? That beauty is nothing compared to Hilary's net worth. Ever since she relocated to Hollywood at the tender age of 6 to begin her acting career, the former Disney Channel starlet has been raking in revenue from TV shows, movies, albums, novels, and fashion lines, even earning the 72nd spot on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list in 2007 for making $12 million that year alone. But that was so yesterday - how much is the 31-year-old Younger star worth now? Let's break it down.
After playing several small roles in movies like Playing by Heart, Casper Meets Wendy, and The Soul Collector, Hilary got her big break in 2001 when she was cast as the titular character in Disney Channel's mega hit TV show Lizzie McGuire. The show ran for two seasons and 65 episodes, even inspiring a movie in 2003 that grossed over $55 million worldwide.

Starring Haylie Duff (Napoleon Dynamite, Material Girls), Michael Ironside (X-Men : First Class, Total Recall), Desecrated is billed as “the first big horror thrill ride of 2015″ – and we have the first images and trailer for the movie, which is set to make its Us debut on January 6th courtesy of Uncork’d Entertainment.
After finding his family murdered by vagrant squatters, an ex-military operative and survivalist is hired by the man who bought his land to watch over the acreage and protect it from invaders. When the new landowner’s daughter arrives for a weekend getaway with her friends, the trip turns deadly when they discover the caretaker’s dark secret – rather than driving off trespassers, he’s hunting them in cold blood.

Like American Idol, every season of So You Think You Can Dance crescendoes to an exhausting and thrilling moment, that week when you realize you're watching superfly talents attempt to sustain superflyness for the eighth or ninth week in a row. It's bracing. It's awesome. But frankly, it's almost a little too grueling in a They Shoot Horses, Don't They? way. (Expect that '69 gem in our Best Movie Ever? section sometime soon.) And here we are, right in the thick of the glorious hell just a week from the finale -- or, as I heard Cat Deeley pronounce it this week, finarwley.
We have six combatants left, six varied levels of eye-popping skill, and another so-so appearance from guest judge Christina Applegate, whose critiques ranged from direct and insightful ("There's a picture in every moment you dance," she said sagely to Eliana) to empty veneration ("Beautiful," she said to.

Madonna's now 15-year-old girl has sure grown up -- she was seen several months ago smoking cigarettes, but the teen still finds time to play dress up! Lourdes Leon tweeted a picture of herself wearing The Material Girl's futuristic cone bra backstage during Madonna's Mdna tour. The Queen of Pop's daughter, nicknamed Lola tweeted on June 27, "Lola backstage at Mdna!", and included a pic. Following in her mother's footsteps Lourdes flaunts the cone bra and is not shy about it. Although Madonna, 53, and Lola have been working together on several collaborations including their clothing line Material Girls, Madonna still worries that her teen is growing up far too quickly. It was another dull weekend at the box office, though new releases The Rite and The Mechanic weren't dreadful, No Strings Attached held relatively well and several pictures capitalized on their Oscar nominations, led by The King's Speech. Overall business wasn't as off as recent weekends, but it was still down 13 percent from the same period last year, when Avatar reigned again. The Rite crept into first with $14.8 million on approximately 3,200 screens at 2,985 locations. That was the highest-grossing opening ever for Anthony Hopkins in a top-billed, non-Hannibal-Lecter role, surpassing Fracture, though it was middling for a demonic or exorcism-themed horror thriller, albeit better than The Reaping and Devil. Its marketing centered on Mr. Hopkins getting possessed and included requisite quotes referencing Hannibal Lecter. Distributor Warner Bros.' exit polling indicated that 64 percent of the audience was aged 25 years and older and that there was an even split between genders.

Washington, Oct 16 – ‘Material Girls’ star Hillary Duff is not going to have children any time soon.
When asked on a radio show, if she and husband Mike Comrie are talking parenthood, Duff replied, “We’re not. We’re not thinking about it at all.”
However, she added, that doesn’t rule out the possibility of children down the road.
“We’re excited to have kids. But we don’t want to do it now. We’ve been married for six weeks. We haven’t sent thank-you notes out yet. Can we get that out of the way before?” People.

If you are into cheesy chick flicks, From Prada to Nada is right up your alley! Camilla Belle and Alexa Vega star in the Latina version of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility," where two spoiled sisters who have been left penniless after their father's sudden death are forced to move in with their estranged aunt in East Los Angeles. This movie actually reminds us of a movie Hilary Duff and her sister Haylie starred in titled Material Girls. From Prada to Nada hits theaters in January. In the meanwhile, you can watch the trailer after the jump.

Though Hilary Duff knew that Mike Comrie owns a $165,000 Mercedes-Benz before marrying him, the "Material Girls" star might not be aware that the NHL star is not very keen on paying for his car. According to TMZ, Mike was hit with a lawsuit for allegedly refusing to pay the bills or giving the ride back.
The site reported that the lawsuit was filed against Mike in L.A. County Superior Court. According to the legal documents, Mike bought the 2009 Mercedes-Benz CL550 back in 2008 but he failed to pay the installments. In the papers, the finance company claimed they've tried to repossess the car but the ice hockey player "refused to allow Plaintiff possession."
And now, the finance company is suing Mike, demanding him to pay off the rest of his contract, which is $103,398.57, as well as other costs. Neither Mike nor his rep has commented or released a statement on the situation.

Madonna and her daughter Lourdes caused a stir in Midtown Manhattan last night as they arrived to promote their new collection, Material Girl, at Macy's in Herald Square. Taylor Momsen, who's front and center in the line's ad campaign, was first down the red carpet to speak about working with the duo. Taylor commented on Madonna and Lola's dynamic, saying, "They have a very normal mother-daughter relationship! They're very loving, and they work well together." Taylor was solo to promote the clothes and perform with her band last month, but yesterday Madonna and Lourdes were right behind her. They patiently made their way down the press line, with Lourdes opening up about the trends she's loving for fall like oxfords paired with socks. The trio then headed up into the department store to start the launch party, where Lola's brother Rocco showed off his breakdancing moves. Stay tuned for an...

The search of new love interest for Peter Parker in "Spider-Man" reboot has included the name of Hilary Duff. The "Lizzie McGuire" star is said auditioning for the role after a script for the movie has reportedly been found in her house.
The Globe and Mail recently visited Duff and her husband Mike Comrie's house for an interview. There, the publication noticed "a script marked 'Spider-Man' sits on the table, with lines for a character simply called 'girl' highlighted in yellow."
While The Globe and Mail linked the finding of the script to the role of Spider-Man's love interest, Cinema Blend suggested that the role offered to Duff might be a small or cameo one.
Previously, Lindsay Lohan was also said eying the role of Mary Jane who was portrayed by Kirsten Dunst in "Spider-Man" trilogy. However, another report mentioned that the red-haired female character would...

Craig here with a new Take Three
Today: Anjelica Huston
Anjelica Huston's played so many memorable roles that I wish I'd called this series Take Ten.
The Witches and The Dead are essential Huston: key performances in two wildly differing films; both minor gems of their genres. As, respectively, the Grand High Witch and mournful Gretta Conroy she couldn’t have been more different, and in both she showed immense versatility. Essential, too, are Enemies: A Love Story and Prizzi’s Honor: an Oscar nod for the former; a win for the latter. (Nathaniel wrote about Mae Rose Prizzi previously - and the Grand High Witch, too.)
For Wes Anderson she played three independent women: two estranged wives in The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and a strange mother in The Darjeeling Limited. The Addams Family's Morticia parts are a double-bill of the joyfully macabre.

The buzzed-about new-wave revivalists get ready to release their full-length debut this spring.
By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Christopher "Cj" Smith
Suckers

Who: Suckers, a quartet of new-wave revivalists from Brooklyn by way of New Haven, Connecticut. Launched by cousins Quinn Walker and Austin Fisher, they began as a ramshackle pair of dudes who used to switch instruments between songs. They finally recruited drummer Brian Aiken and jack-of-all-trades Pan to complete the lineup. The group's self-titled Ep created a ton of online buzz last year (especially the oft-blogged tune "It Gets Your Body Movin' "), and their full-length debut (produced by Chris Zane, who also helmed breakouts by Passion Pit and Tokyo Police Club) is complete and should be out in the spring.
Sound Like: If the bouncy poly-rhythms of the Talking Heads made sweet, sweet love to Purple Rain-era Prince, with a healthy dose of lo-fi fuzz and DayGlo swirls.

Actor Warren Beatty has slept with more than 12,000 women, according to a new authorized biography of the legendary Hollywood lothario. Beatty has enjoyed high profile romances with Madonna, Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Joan Collins, Julie Christie and his current wife Annette Bening - but writer Peter Biskind claims the 72 year old secretly seduced thousands of women during his heyday.
In "Star: How Warren Beatty Seduced America", Biskind estimates the actor has been with "12,775 women, give or take, a figure that does not include daytime quickies, drive-bys, casual gropings, stolen kisses and so on." Biskind, who wrote the biography after candid chats with the "The Story of Bonnie and Clyde" star, lifts the lid on his subject's many famous lovers, and his legendary stamina for sex.
The author claims older partner Joan Collins ditched Beatty because his insatiable appetite wore her out, and he only met his match when he met...

We don’t know about you, but when we think of Hilary Duff, all we can picture in our mind’s eye is a pretty lamb, gambolling around in a pretty field under a pretty sun. We’re not saying she’s bland, you see, but the once and former Lizzie McGuire has a CV that contains the likes of Cheaper By The Dozen (and its sequel), Material Girls and A Flamin’ Soddin’ Cinderella Story – and it doesn’t get much more bland than that.Clearly, though, Duff herself has decided to address the situation by signing on to star as Bonnie Parker in The Story Of Bonnie And Clyde, a new version of, erm, the story of Bonnie and Clyde. Two of the most infamous bank robbers of all time, Bonnie Parker and her beau, Clyde Barrow, went on a four-year crime spree between 1931 and 1935 during which they pulled...

We haven’t seen much of her on the big screen lately, but Hilary Duff is more than ready to launch into several upcoming projects. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress has joined the cast of the Polish brothers’ latest comedy “Stay Cool.”
Written by Mark and Michael Polish, whose credits include “The Astronaut Farmer,” the film centers on a successful author who must face one of his high school crushes when he travels back home to deliver a commencement address.
Mark Polish slips into the role of the lead character, with Winona Ryder playing his unrequited crush. Duff plays a high school senior who flirts with the author and tries to hook up with him at the prom.
Duff can currently be seen in the political satire “War, Inc.,” which is only playing in limited cities. Before that, she last starred alongside sister Haylie Duff in “Material Girls...

Sharon Stone's Basic Instinct 2 sequel appears to be have been a risk not worth taking after notching up seven nominations at next month's Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture and Worst Actress Of The Year. Competing against the film in the Worst Picture category is BloodRayne, Lady In The Water, The Wicker Man, and the Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans comedy Little Man, which also received seven nominations including Worst Director. The Wayans brothers share a Worst Actor nod battling against Little Man co-star Rob Schneider, The Wicker Man's Nicolas Cage, Larry The Cable Guy for Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector. And Tim Allen has three nominations in the same category - for The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, The Shaggy Dog and Zoom. Meanwhile, sisters Hilary Duff and Haylie Duff are both nominated for Worst Actress for their roles in Material Girls. They will fight it out with Stone, Jessica Simpson for Employee Of The Month, Lindsay Lohan for Just My Luck and Kristanna Loken for BloodRayne. Stone - who has previously won the Razzie for Worst Actress for The Specialist and Intersection - earns another mention for her "lopsided breasts" in the category for Worst Screen Couple. The awards' founder, John Wilson, says, "She's what we call a Razzie repeat offender. Perhaps even a recidivist."...

The Internet buzz surrounding New Line Cinema's Snakes on a Plane didn't translate to much bite at the boxoffice. The massive hype surrounding the R-rated horror film only managed to scare up $15.2 million at the North American boxoffice. Snakes beat out reigning champ Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby by a mere $1.45 million for the top spot. If Snakes' $1.4 million for its 10 p.m. and midnight shows was not counted into the weekend's gross, the Samuel L. Jackson starrer would have maintained the top spot by only $500,000. Other newcomers, Accepted from Universal Pictures and MGM's Material Girls, didn't do much business either. Accepted, the PG-13-rated teen comedy starring Justin Long, earned $10 million, while the Hilary Duff starrer Girls grossed a weak $4.6 million.

Fans might have laughed at the title, cheered the casting of Samuel L. Jackson and even created homages to it on the Internet, but they didn't show up to theaters in significant numbers during the weekend. The much buzzed-about Snakes on a Plane, from New Line Cinema, performed well below its extremely hyped expectations, earning an estimated $15.3 million for its three-day opener. It managed to eke out the top spot at the North American boxoffice over Sony Pictures' Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, but only because it included in its weekend total $1.4 million from its 10 p.m. Thursday showings. Other newcomers were equally unimpressive, with Universal Pictures' Accepted grossing an estimated $10.1 million to place fourth, and MGM's Hilary Duff starrer Material Girls generating an estimated $4.6 million for a ninth-place finish.
