Kathryn Crosby, the actor, singer and widow of Bing Crosby, died Friday evening of natural causes at her home in Hillsborough, Calif. She was 90.
A representative for the Crosby family announced the news.
Crosby starred in more than 20 films over the course of her career, including “The Wild Party” (1956), “Operation Mad Ball” (1957), “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958) and “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959). She typically performed under the stage names Kathryn Grant and Kathryn Grandstaff.
Crosby appeared frequently on Bing’s “Merrie Olde Christmas” specials and hosted “The Kathryn Crosby Show,” a 30-minute talk show based in San Francisco. Following the death of her husband in 1977, she performed in several stage productions such as the 1996 Broadway revival of “State Fair.” She also hosted the charitable Crosby National Golf Tournament in Bermuda Run, N.C., for many years.

Episode 3 of John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams is more like a romantic drama than a horror documentary. Taking inspiration from a lot of cult classics like Halloween, It, The Shinning, and many more, the third episode seemed more like a montage of those films than a docufiction. The horror elements in this episode were poorly executed, making the entire episode disappointing and boring. The third episode titled “The House Next Door” is the story of Dr. Torrence, who falls in love with a teen girl in his neighborhood. But their romantic endeavor didn’t end well, as a horrific tragedy took place.
Spoilers Ahead
How Did Torrance And Lisa Meet?
The third episode of John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams is about the haunted house in the neighborhood of Dr. Torrence, who is seen giving interviews to the filmmakers. Along with Torrence, we saw his friends giving interviews about the haunted house,...

Just back from the 2017 TCM Classic Movie Festival with a few thoughts and thoughts about thoughts. I certainly held my reservations about this year’s edition, and though I ultimately ended up tiring early of flitting about from theater to theater like a mouse in a movie maze (it happens to even the most fanatically devoted of us on occasion, or so I’m told), there were, as always, several things I learned by attending Tcmff 2017 as well.
1) TCM Staffers Are Unfailingly Polite And Helpful
Thankfully I wasn’t witness, as I have been in past years, to any pass holders acting like spoiled children because they had to wait in a long queue or, heaven forbid, because they somehow didn’t get in to one of their preferred screenings. Part of what makes the Tcmff experience as pleasant as it often is can be credited to the tireless work...

The Supporting Actress Smackdown of '89 arrives on Sunday August 31st, two weeks from now. We'll be celebrating 1989 here and there until then as "the year of the month". You need to get your votes in, too, (instructions at the end of the post). If you've wandered in from elsewhere and are like, "What's a Smackdown?," here's how it started and here's last month's entry on 1973 with its companion podcast. The year in question this time is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Will American Hustle win multiple acting nods?Icymi we are starting a new tradition here at The Film Experience. Though we usually gather a handful of prominent film bloggers to discuss the Oscar nominations in great detail (once they've had time to sink in), this year we're doing a mini-symposium before the nominations to discuss the always competitive situations surrounding the "just glad to be nominated" spot. Yesterday, Kurt Osenlund (The House Next Door), Nathaniel R (The Film Experience, c'est moi), Christopher Rosen (Huffington Post), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) and You (in the comments) began with the supporting categories and who might rise should one of the expected five in each category falter at the finish line. (Though if you really think it over, isn't Nomination Morning really the starting gate?)
Where we left off yesterday: Sasha thought Robert Redford's All is Lost nomination would still be nominated, despite...

Nathaniel R: Things that are awesome that come in sets of five: fingers, boy bands, the filmography of John Cazale, golden rings to be used for Olympics or in song, toes, Oscar nominees... It always comes back to the Oscars here at The Film Experience, don't you know?
I never thought of myself as any more averse to change than the average person but when the Academy changed the Best Picture system in 2009 and 2010 to a top ten and then to anything between 5 and 10, the magic number suddenly becoming 9 in both 2011 and 2012, it felt like a direct attack on my sanity. But Oscar categories come in fives!!! I've never stopped internally protesting and whenever anyone suggests that the acting categories should widen as well, a little part of me dies inside or reaches for smelling salts.

Last week I reviewed The Wicked, a nasty little bit of throwback-style horror from the pen of James Newman. Whenever a book grabs me like The Wicked did – shakes me up and reminds me of why I spend so much time reading this crazy genre – I like to talk to the writer, get inside his or her head and find out what led them to make the choices they made in writing it. Luckily for me, Newman was more than willing to answer a few of my questions.
In the afterword to your novel The Wicked, you talk about the influence of the horror of the 1980s. Which novels and writers of that era influence you in general and The Wicked in particular?
Oh, man. How much time do you have?
Here's my Top Ten: The House Next Door by Anne Rivers-Siddons (that one was the first "adult" horror novel I ever read,...

Nathaniel: Kurt I miss you. You have moved to the far off land of Brooklyn and we never see each other. And yet, when I watch the Best Actresses walking the red carpet I know you're out there somewhere gazing at the same visions. So a few questions to kick things off about the Screen Actors Fashionista Guild.
Which of the Best Actresses did it for you? And was this in line with what you think of their performances or the inverse of that? Character arcs aren't cut from runway cloth but sometimes I think people judge the gowns based on how much they're currently loving the woman inside.

The New York Film Critics Circle will welcome three new members this year, the organization announced Tuesday. Made up of reviewers from respected New York-based newspapers and magazines as well as select online publications, the New York Film Critics Circle (Nyfcc) meets once a year to vote on the year's best films. The prestigious awards ceremony is known both for foreshadowing the year's Oscar nominations, while also recognizing films neglected by the commercially-oriented Oscars. New York Magazine's Bilge Ebiri will join fellow New York Magazine critic David Edelstein on the New York Film Critics Circle this year. Ebiri has also written for Time Out New York, Entertainment Weekly, and Nerve.com. In 2003 Ebiri also wrote, directed, and co-produced his first film "New Guy." Nick Pinkerton will become the third Village Voice film critic among the Nyfcc members this year. Pinkerton has reviewed for the Village Voice since 2007 and has also written for La Weekly.

"In 1962 Pier Paolo Pasolini received a suspended sentence for his allegedly blasphemous contribution to the portmanteau film Rogopag, a brilliant sketch satirizing biblical movies," writes Philip French in his brief review of the new Masters of Cinema release of The Gospel According to St Matthew in today's Observer. "Two years later the gay, Marxist atheist showed the world how a life of Christ should be made, and it is a magnificent achievement, far superior to Scorsese's or Gibson's films."
David Jenkins in Little White Lies: "Essentially a 'straight' retelling of the life of Christ (who is played with fervent intensity by Enrique Irazoqui), which, on its surface, seldom editorializes or strays towards controversy, the film was fully embraced by the religious community to the extent that a colorized version was made to capitalize on the Bible belt buck. We're very excited to announce that Mubi will be co-presenting a 35mm screening of David Lynch's much-maligned 1992 masterpiece Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me in New York on February 24 and 25 at 92YTribeca. I spend quite a bit of my time every day browsing the internet and in knowing how much work is involved in running a website, producing and hosting a podcast and even writing a film review, I felt like taking some time away from my busy schedule to plug a few of my favourite websites, critics and podcasts from 2011.
Best New Discovery of 2011: Keyframe
By far, without a doubt, my biggest discovery was Keyframe, the blog section of Fandor.com, run by Kevin B. Lee. The following link will bring you to Keyframe’s Most Popular Articles of 2011.
Best Review Site: Slant Magazine
It helps that my favourite film critic Nick Schager writes for Slant, but in all honesty, every writer at Slant is extremely talented. Even if you don’t agree with their views (especially that of Ed Gonzalez), you can’t deny the sheer amount of talent Slant has assembled.

This doesn't need an entire post to itself but if you haven't heard you should know that Shame, the eagerly awaited Hunger follow up from visionary Steve McQueen will open on December 2nd. That's the one that stars the naked raw talents known as Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. Yay! I'd tell you that I'm seeing it this week but the press screenings at Nyff this year have been more difficult than in past years... so I plan to see it this week.

Zac Efron has revealed that he used to live next door to a haunted house. Speaking to Virgin Media the 22-year-old High School Musical star explained that the neighbourhood he grew up in came complete with a creepy, supposedly spirit-filled home that terrified the community. "The house next door was haunted [and] nobody would go inside," he recalled. "It had all these broken boards and there were all kinds of weird stories about [what] happened there." However, the spooky residence failed to deter the young star's adventurous side, as Efron claimed that he once plucked up the courage to explore the house (more)...

Brad Bird's The Incredibles has long had many political meanings read into it. Perhaps most controversial is how well the film lines up with Ayn Rand's objectivist movement. It's also quite popular with politically conservative types as well --- the National Review named it number two on their list of the top 25 conservative movies. Tom Elrod, over at The House Next Door, points out that The Incredibles isn't the only Pixar film that could be read conservatively in a recent post. He argues that while Pixar's movies may not be politically conservative, you could apply a more relaxed notion of conservatism to many of their films due to their focus on preserving the family unit. Elrod explains it best in his article: There is something conservative about much of Pixar's output, but when I say conservative, I mean a small “c” conservative that sees the world along the...

The House Next Door Did you read any of these "Pixar Week" articles arriving to coincide with the Toy Story 3-D release? Interesting stuff therein and not all of it is the typical media fawning over all things Pixar. Though I'm kinda miffed that there's a defense of Cars and takedown of Wall•E. Sometimes there's no need to be contrarian. Every once in a while the general consensus is correct

I have been following Aaron Aradillas and Matt Zoller Seitz's video features detailing what they refer to as "A Tale of Two Summers," which re-examines summer movies released in 1984 and 1989 and putting them in context of the politics and popular culture that surrounded their release and tries to show how they eventually led to the entertainment that dominates today. The series is featured at L Magazine as well as being posted at The House Next Door (keep your eyes on that site, it's a good one) and Parts 1 and 2, covering 1984, are both online. The following parts 3-5 will be looking at the summer of 1989. "The Hurt Locker" represents a return to strong, exciting narrative. Here is a film about a bomb disposal expert that depends on character, dialogue and situation to develop almost unbearable suspense. It contains explosions, but only a few, and it is not about explosions, but about hoping that none will happen. That sense of hope is crucial. When we merely want to see stuff blowed up real good in a movie, that means the movie contains no one we give a damn about.
We care a lot about the people in "The Hurt Locker." It does what many good movies does, and gives us a feeling for the personalities and motivations of its characters. What happens to Staff Sgt. William James matters to us. He is a brave and complicated man, and we worry about him. It is a good thing he is doing. He is risking his life to...

Turning 70 is something everyone (who doesn't die first) will do. Hitting your 47th year as a consistently employed screen actor is not something many actors can do. Review by Vadim Rizov (The Village Voice, The House Next Door).
1970's Dodes'ka-den stands alone and damned in film history as the rare film whose failure drove its director to attempt suicide. Unprecedented in Akira Kurosawa's career up to that point (its failure guaranteed no similar offerings), Dodes'ka-den was horrendously received in Japan; Kurosawa responded by slashing himself over 30 times with a razor. He survived; the film's reputation didn't. Criterion's issue of the film offers a chance at redemption. Safe to say the film won't be canonically integrated anytime soon — it's fairly turgid — but also rewarding viewing for Kurosawa devotees. There's nothing else like it in his canon.

"Tim Wiegel, his roommate there, later a sportscaster, told me Gene was famous for wearing a Batman costume and dropping out of trees." That's my favorite image of the day, no matter what else I see or read. Tom Stempel's got a new edition of "Understanding Screenwriting" up over at The House Next Door, and there's some really good material in the column today. You know, when I first started doing this, writing online about film, I...
