Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (American Murderer), Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Mena Suvari (American Horror Story) will topline Kalahari, a new action thriller from Vertical, which has wrapped production.
Vertical fully financed the pic and has taken North American rights, with Voltage Pictures locking down rights for all international territories, preparing now to present the film to buyers at Cannes.
In the film written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil (Collide), a young couple is forced to flee their Christian missionary post in the Kalahari Desert aboard a rickety plane after an extremist militant group threatens their lives. Piloted by a corrupt smuggler (Hirsch), the plane loses power and crash-lands in the middle of an animal preserve populated by lions, leopards and hyenas. Injured, frightened, and being tracked by the extremists, this ragtag group must fight for their survival from both man and beast where only the strong will survive.

This month, Comedy Central is bringing a new adult animated adventure comedy series to television. "Digman!" stars Andy Samberg as the titular archaeologist, a blend of Nicolas Cage's "National Treasure" character (complete with an eccentric variation of Samberg's trusty Cage impression from "Saturday Night Live") and Indiana Jones. Once a celebrated hero in the world of archaeology, the death of his wife over a decade before and a harsh betrayal by his sidekick has sent Rip Digman into a pathetic spiral. Today, he finds himself aging and out of shape, living an unhappy existence taking little jobs for rinky-dink museums around the world. But adventure is still out there, and so are plenty of laughs.
"Digman!" is co-created by Samberg himself along with "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" writer and producer Neil Campbell, and the two have brought an absurd sense of humor and a surprising dose of sci-fi to the classic adventure formula.

Adventure has a name, and it's Rip Digman. Andy Samberg stars in the new Comedy Central animated series "Digman!" beginning on March 22 (watch the trailer here). The former "Saturday Night Live" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star lends his voice to a heroic Indiana Jones-esque archaeologist who was once the best in his field. But following the death of his wife over a decade earlier, not to mention a shocking betrayal by his sidekick, we find Digman washed up, out of shape, and over the hill. Even the national news mocks Digman's shortcomings and fall from grace. Yes, in this world, the news is always reporting on archaeologists as if they're celebrities or superheroes, and they're always taking cheap shots at Digman.
Joined by an eager, bespectacled assistant named Saltine, and encouraged by his elderly, raspy-voiced receptionist Agatha (Dale Soules of "Orange is the New Black"), Digman tries to get his life...

Pete Davidson is returning to the Peacock Network — sort of. The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member is heading to Peacock for his new comedy series “Bupkis,” and the show has set its release date for May 4.
Davidson writes and stars in the series which — somewhat similar to his film “The King of Staten Island” — is based heavily on his own life, though unlike that Judd Apatow film, Davidson appears to explicitly be playing a fictionalized version of himself. Peacock describes the show as a “a heightened, fictionalized version of Pete Davidson’s real life,” one that “combines grounded storytelling with absurd elements from the unfiltered and completely original worldview for which Pete is well known.”
The series also stars Italian American acting legends Edie Falco (“The Sopranos”) and Joe Pesci (“Goodfellas”) as Davidson’s mother and grandfather, respectively. The show also features several guest stars, including Davidson’s “Bodies Bodies Bodies...

Pulling together an episode of "Saturday Night Live" is a rigorous, high-pressure exercise. Though creator-producer Lorne Michaels has the process down to a science of sorts after supervising the series for most of its 48 years on the air, the tight Monday-to-Saturday window leaves little room for refinement. Watch the fascinating 2010 documentary "Saturday Night," which examines a week in the life of the show, and you'll see some of the funniest people on the planet bomb repeatedly as they scramble to fill 67 minutes of airtime with reasonably funny material.
"SNL" has had its ups and downs over its remarkably long run, but if you ask long-time fans to name some of the series' most consistently funny performers, their list must include the Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. Their "Digital Shorts" were the most anticipated segments of the show, and they almost always delivered. Almost. No...

Will Forte is one of the most reliable names in comedy. Whether it's leading the absurd action of "MacGruber," lending his voice to animated comedy in the likes of "Rick and Morty" and "The Simpsons," or bringing to life various incarnations of Abraham Lincoln in "Clone High," "The Lego Movie," and "America: The Motion Picture," you can always count on Forte to inspire plenty of hilarity. But there's also a gentle charm to his presence when he's not driving the comedy bus. That's what makes him the perfect choice to play a father in the Sundance-selected family comedy "Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out."
Directed by Jake Van Wagoner, the film follows teen girl Itsy Levan, who finds herself suddenly stuck in the middle of nowhere after her home-flipping parents move their family out of the big city. At her new school, Itsy meets the quirky but intelligent Calvin Kipler,...

Will Forte Says 'Chances Are Slim' For MacGruber Season 2, But Will 'Never Count It Out' [Exclusive]
MacGruber has survived a lot since the character first debuted on "Saturday Night Live" in 2007. The "MacGyver"-like antihero has been blown to bits by exploding bombs countless times, distracted by everything from his grandma-turned-fiance (Betty White) to wild Covid-era conspiracy theories. He lost his wife (Maya Rudolph) seconds after they got married, got out of some tricky situations with the help of a creatively-placed stalk of celery, and faced down villains played by Val Kilmer and Billy Zane, among others.
But it's unclear at this point if MacGruber will survive his greatest foe yet: the increasingly crowded streaming era. /Film's Ethan Anderton interviewed "MacGruber" co-creator and star Will Forte ahead of his role in the Sundance film "Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out." During the conversation, the comedian revealed that the show's fate doesn't look super-promising, but also notes that MacGruber has beat the odds before.

The late Phil Hartman voiced two of the funniest characters on "The Simpsons." First, there was the ambulance-chasing lawyer Lionel Hutz, who's like Saul Goodman minus the competence, and then Troy McClure, a washed-up movie star reduced to hosting informational videos. With a trademark pink sweater and forced grin, McClure would always introduce himself with, "You may remember me from such movies as..."
Both characters debuted in season 2, Hutz in "Bart Gets Hit by a Car" and McClure in "Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment." Hutz was the more prominent of the two, as the Simpsons were no strangers to lawsuits and Hutz was their go-to representation. McClure's parts tended to be simple cameos when characters watched his films, though he did have a starring role in "A Fish Called Selma." It turns out that McClure's had bad luck getting work because the public learned of his fetish for fish.

If you've never seen the 1984 comedy "Top Secret!", it's a film that pulls double-duty as both a spoof of spy movies and Elvis Presley. The comedy in the film is equal parts broad, clever, slapstick, and dumb, as you might expect from Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers, David and Jerry, who previously unleashed "Airplane!" on the world. And as you might also expect, it's also uproariously funny. But the film is most memorable for introducing audiences to Val Kilmer, who turns in a star-making performance as Nick Rivers -- a rock and roll heartthrob who gets pulled into the world of international espionage and intrigue.
Given Kilmer's reputation as a serious actor, thanks to stellar turns in movies like "Tombstone," "The Doors," and "Heat," it's easy to forget that his earliest work on the big screen was in the comedy genre. Between "Top Secret!" and "Real Genius," he...

If you were packaging a film in 2004, you couldn't have rounded up a colder trio of artists than Shane Black, Val Kilmer, and Robert Downey Jr. Black had been struggling to reinvent himself as a writer after gaining notoriety as one of Hollywood's spec script kings; as a result, he hadn't sold a screenplay since 1996's "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (which New Line purchased for a then-record 4 million). Val Kilmer was the whole damn package: a movie star with method acting chops. There was a moment when he was compared to the revered likes of Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift. Then came the flops and tales of rotten on-set behavior. Despite terrific performances in James Cox's "Wonderland" and David Mamet's "Spartan," Kilmer's public wasn't showing up.
And then there was Downey Jr. The son of legendary indie filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. had been on the cusp of stardom...

When the now disbanded Zaz trio of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker were on their spoof game, they belonged to a very exclusive club that, to this day, includes only Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Monty Python. Their parody run of "Kentucky Fried Movie," "Airplane!," "Top Secret!" and "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" remains unmatched. And while they were likely too talented to miss the mark in their heyday, it's difficult to imagine them drilling the bullseye so emphatically without the deadpan genius of Leslie Nielsen.
When Nielsen was cast as the unflappable Dr. Rumack in "Airplane!," he was best known for his stolid performances in films like "Forbidden Planet," "The Swamp Fox" and "The Poseidon Adventure." He provided instant, deathly serious gravity to every scene he entered. He was no one's idea of a comedic dynamo, which is why he was perfect for the part of Rumack.

Billy Zane knows how to pick a villain. The actor has consistently provoked reactions of seething disgust for decades, ever since he first jumped on the screen in "Back to the Future" as one of Biff's henchmen. Of course, he is best known as the epitome of entitlement and toxicity in James Cameron's epic "Titanic," where he most famously abused the "women and children first" code of conduct by kidnapping a little girl he immediately abandons when she isn't a convenience.
Since then, Zane has played villains in "MacGruber," "Kingdom Hearts," and even in "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" where Zane plays the greatest showman himself, P.T. Barnum. As a reminder, that show was insane, and totally perfect.
Now, Zane has found his latest role, and it sounds like another Zane winner. Variety reports Billy Zane is set to star in the action thriller heist film "Takeover."

Actor Billy Zane and rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer Quavo are starring in action thriller feature film “Takeover.”
Zane plays Gamal Akopyan, the leader of an international heist ring, who uses street takeovers to get away with mass robberies. When his latest heist goes awry, he must do whatever it takes to escape the Atlanta takeover scene alive – with nine figures worth of diamonds.
Street takeovers are a U.S. phenomenon where motorists arrive at a particular location in a coordinated manner similar to flash mobs, block streets with their vehicles and engage in stunts with their cars. Criminals often use this time to conduct robberies.

The 47th season of “Saturday Night Live” welcomed 21 guest hosts to Studio 8H between October 2021 and May 2022. While all of them were eligible to be submitted for Emmy consideration, either by NBC or by their own publicists, only nine guest hosts ended up appearing on the 2022 Emmys ballot. Some of the big names include Kim Kardashian, who met her future boyfriend Pete Davidson during her week on set, and Lizzo, who memorably served as her own musical guest. “We don’t have a problem with grossing people out,” proclaims Will Forte about “MacGruber” in our recent webchat. He also surprisingly admits the writers do discuss whether things go too far “all the time, then we usually do it anyway.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“MacGruber” is an action-comedy series streaming on Peacock. It is based on the “Saturday Night Live” sketches which were turned into a feature film in 2010. In all incarnations Forte plays MacGruber, the supremely confident and often incompetent special operations agent. Leading a comedy series is not new for the actor who previously received two Emmy nominations in the Best Comedy Actor category for the network comedy “The Last Man on Earth”.

Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (MacGruber), Mireille Enos (Hanna), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black) are the latest additions to Michelle Danner’s courtroom drama, Miranda’s Victim. They join an ensemble led by Abigail Breslin, which also includes Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland, as previously announced.
The film will tell the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin), who in 1963 was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. Committed to putting her assailant in prison, Trish’s life is destroyed by America’s legal system as she triggers a law that transforms the nation. Her case notably results in the establishment of the Miranda rights afforded to criminal suspects taken in police custody, to ensure the admissibility of statements made during interrogation, as part of subsequent criminal proceedings.

Update, 5:51 p.m. Et: Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney are also parting ways with “Saturday Night Live” ahead of Season 48. Pete Davidson, who joined “Saturday Night Live” as a relative unknown and has become a superstar whose presence graces gossip pages daily, is expected to leave “Saturday Night Live” after the broadcast of this weekend’s season finale, according to a person familiar with the matter. He is one of a handful of long-serving cast members including Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon whose tenure on the show has come up for scrutiny at the conclusion of recent seasons. Davidson joined the show in 2014 as a featured player at the age of 20, one of the youngest cast members in the program’s 47 seasons on air.
NBC declined to make producers at “SNL” available for comment.
His departure is likely to draw a new burst of attention to the long-running program, which typically uses its summer hiatus to recalibrate its cast of players and contributors.

That’s all, folks. The TV industry’s return to in-person upfront presentations across Manhattan concluded Thursday with the joyful sound of Stevie Wonder rocking “Superstition” at the CW’s New York City Center event.
Among those who presented this week, during what has long been traditionally considered the broadcast networks’ time to shine in front of advertisers, were NBCUniversal, Fox Corp, Telemundo, TelevisaUnivision, Disney, YouTube, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount and the CW. It was evident that NBC, ABC, Fox and CBS are no longer the only stars of the show here, and the Big Four took their place among the streamers and cable channels touted by parent companies throughout the week.
Now that it’s all been said, spun and quipped, Variety‘s team of TV reporters and editors have taken a step back to assess the highs, lows and trends of upfronts week.

If only Andy Warhol had lived to see “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” the cinematic culmination of the Campbell’s soup can painter’s meta-commentary on the blurring of art and commerce. This frenetic and funny crossbreeding of live action and cartoon is both a reboot and an anti-reboot, a corporate-funded raspberry at corporate IP, and a giddily dumb smart aleck committed to mocking its joke — and making it, too.

The network upfronts are back — sort of. NBCUniversal kicked off the return of in-person upfronts presentations to advertisers, the first since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And just as the conglom had started to do even before the pandemic, the presentation was more about the company as a whole, and less about individual networks (except for a lengthy performance-based pitch for “Bravocon”).
The event didn’t even mention NBC’s fall schedule or timeslots, instead focusing on NBCU offerings, divided by genre. Still, a lot of the old upfronts-style trappings remained, from suits touting their wares to stars coming out and making cracks about their corporate owners.
“TV is the only place where you can lie through your teeth about how great everything is and call it upfront,” Seth Meyers quipped. “Let me be upfront with you. Half the shows won’t make it through the year… I don’t need to tell you,...

Edie Falco has landed a leading role in the Peacock series Bupkis, a half-hour live-action comedy that tells a fictionalized version of Pete Davidson‘s life. Falco will play the role of Davidson’s mom.
Falco and Davidson revealed the casting in person at the NBCUniversal Upfront presentation on Monday.
“I’m so excited to be playing your mother in this show, Pete,” the Sopranos star said, giving a nod to her Emmy-winning role. “Finally, I get to play an overwhelmed mother of two living in a world of corruption. Except this time, it’s Staten Island.”
Falco and Davidson joked about Bupkis streaming on Peacock.
“I can’t believe we are going to be on Peacock, the streamer that is responsible for so so many great shows like MacGruber and the reruns of The Office,” Davidson said. “So look out for our new show streaming on the ‘Cock.

“Saturday Night Live” Pete Davidson is working on a comedy series for Universal Television, where he would star as “himself,” TheWrap has learned.
According to Deadline, which first reported the news, the series is currently titled “Bupkis” and its being pitched at streaming services. Davidson is said to be penning the series with Dave Sirius and Judah Miller (Pete Holmes’ “Crashing”).
Specifically, the show would hail from Lorne Michael’s Broadway Video, which is under a deal with Universal TV.
Over the years, Michaels has produced many shows from his “SNL” talent roster including “30 Rock” (with Tina Fey), “MacGruber” (with Will Forte and Kristen Wiig), “Kenan,” starring Kenan Thompson, and “Schmigadoon!” with Cecily Strong.
Davidson joined “SNL” in 2014 and is currently in his eight season.
Davidson is repped by ICM Partners, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Granderson Des Rochers.
TheWrap has reached out to a rep for Universal Television for comment.

NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock reached 24.5 million monthly active accounts in the U.S. at the end of 2021. That’s about 4.5 million more monthly active accounts than when we got our last update back in July. We did not get an actual subscriber tally (again) early Thursday morning, when parent company Comcast reported its fourth-quarter and full-year 2021 financials.
All told, Comcast outperformed analyst expectations, but those added Peacock accounts came at a steep price.
Wall Street forecast earnings per share (Eps) of 73 cents on $29.74 billion in revenue, according to a consensus of media analysts compiled by Yahoo Finance. Comcast reported Eps of 77 cents on $30.336 billion in revenue. The earnings figure was up 37.5% from Q4 2020; revenue rose 9.5%.
NBCU quarterly revenue jumped 25.6% from Q4 2020 to $9.3 billion. While revenue at the company’s Media segment, which includes Peacock, increased 8.4%, a $559 million loss related to the streaming service provided a big blow to the bottom line.

Netflix and Sky are co-producing for the first time on natural history series “Predators,” a six-parter that will follow six predators across changing landscapes. The series will premiere on Sky Nature in the U.K., Germany and Italy in winter 2022.
Other Sky factual commissions include “Gabon” (working title) that explores the story of a scientist from Manchester who became the Environment Minister of Central African country Gabon after forming an unlikely friendship with President Ali Bongo, which will bow on Sky Documentaries later this year, while “Death on The Beach,” which examines young travellers who have died under mysterious circumstances on the remote backpacking Thai island Koh Tao, will be on Sky Crime in March.
Elsewhere, following the Nov. 2021 launches in the U.K. and Ireland, Sky and NBCUniversal are continuing the rollout of Peacock internationally on Sky across Germany and Austria. From Jan. 25, at no additional cost, Sky Q...

Will Forte returned to the Saturday Night Live studio to host after his 2010 departure from the show. Forte created several hilarious characters during his SNL tenure, and one of them, MacGruber, premiered last month as a series on the NBC streamer Peacock. After the Cold Open, Forte delivered his host monologue with plenty of passive-aggressive screeds […]

Will Forte finally returned to Studio 8H in 30 Rockefeller Plaza to host "Saturday Night Live" for the first time since leaving the series as a cast member back in 2010, the same year "MacGruber" leapt from the sketch stage to the big screen. So it's only appropriate that he returns to "SNL" just one month after "MacGruber" returned in the form of a streaming series on Peacock (available now).
Thankfully, Forte brought the bomb-disarming, morally questionable government operative with him, along with fellow "MacGruber" cast members Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe. Those weren't the only special guest stars of...

Twelve years after his departure as a regular cast member, Will Forte finally returned to the "Saturday Night Live" stage to host the long-running late night sketch comedy series. Because the "Last Man On Earth" and "Nebraska" star is best known for bringing a number of awkward and somewhat dark characters to life throughout his eight year tenure on the show, Forte has quite a deep well of characters that he could have brought back for his first hosting gig.
Unfortunately, Jeff Montgomery, Hamilton, and Carl the fartfaced businessman were no shows this time around. But Clancy T. Bachleratt did reunite with Jackie Snad to sing...

Much like with Jason Sudeikis earlier this season — and even a non-former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, like Owen Wilson — it’s surprising to realize that Will Forte had not hosted an episode of “Saturday Night Live” until this season. Not even during his “The Last Man on Earth” days. But this weekend, he returned to 8H to make said hosting debut and promote Peacock’s “MacGruber” series, mixing nostalgia with some standard Forte weirdness in the process.
Host: Will Forte
As Forte noted in his opening monologue, every former “SNL” cast member who was a repertory player at the time of his final season, Season 35 (12 years ago), managed to host before he ever did. Sometimes multiple times — and that even counted for John Mulaney, who was “just” a writer for the show, never a cast member. When you really consider who that entails, you have to think about just...
