Southbound is yet another horror anthology from the people behind the V/H/S trilogy. However unlike that series of films, Southbound actually gets things right. Perfectly right.
Southbound opens and closes with Radio Silence’s The Way Out and The Way In (in that order). A book-ending tale that introduces us to two men on the run, being chased across the desert by ethereal, skeletal grim reapers from which there is no escape. Especially when the pair stop at a gas station… We return to the same tale for the closer, discovering why the pair are on the run and why they are being haunted. Sure, when you look at the surface, it's the bad guys like Carlo Medici and Riario involved in the Labyrinth and the Sons of Mithras have Leo's old ally Al-Rahim Aka The Turk (Alexander Siddig) and the true pope, Francesco (James Faulkner). However, one side is fighting to defend Italy and the other wide is actively assaulting and killing the people of the peninsula and by extension the Catholic Church.

This week's "Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," the third film based on the young adult book series by Suzanne Collins, is ridiculously anticipated. Part of it is finding out what the resolution will be for the cliffhanger that ended the last film, last year's sleek "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," another part of it is getting to watch one of the last performances by the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman (who was almost done with his role when overdosing earlier this year), but most of it has to do with the characters that audiences have grown to love -- and the actors who inhabit those characters.
We were invited to the press conference over the weekend, where just about everybody was in attendance (Willow Shields, Geoffrey Wright, Julianne Moore, Donald Sutherland, Natalie Dormer, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Sam Claflin and, of course, Jennifer Lawrence), and got the inside skinny on the film from the stars themselves.

Quentin Tarantino has reportedly withdrawn his latest Western film after the script was leaked.
The director told Deadline that he only shared his script for The Hateful Eight with six people but the "betrayal" has left him with "no desire to make it".
Django Unchained, Pulp Fiction and more: 7 secrets of Tarantino moviemaking
"I'm very, very depressed," Tarantino explained. "I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn't mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it's gotten out today."
The 50-year-old realised it had been leaked after his long-time agent Mike Simpson began receiving phone calls from agents trying to get their clients a role on the film.
Tarantino named several people he gave the script to, including Django Unchained producer Reggie Hudlin, and the actors Michael Madsen, Tim Roth and Bruce Dern - the latter confirming...

Nobody Can Cool is the rather impressive directorial debut from up-and-coming filmmaking duo Dpyx, Marcy Boyle and Rachel Holzman, who crafted a blisteringly taut and thoughtful indie crime thriller with a palpable sense of tension from start to finish. A gritty and engaging tale of deceit, violence and desperation, Nobody Can Cool is anchored by a breakout performance by Nick Principe (best known from his work in the Laid to Rest series, Madison County and...

It’s ironic when you think about it. On one hand, you’ve got a character who is addicted to murdering people. On the other hand, you’ve got a cable network that refuses to let that character die. Stuck in the middle is one Michael C. Hall, who would probably like nothing more than to be able to branch out and do other things. You know, like movies. Movies about anyone other than the titular character of Dexter.
According to Showtime president David Nevins, the network is still interested in bringing everyone’s favorite serial killer back for some sort of spinoff series. Speaking at a recent TCA press event, he mentioned how the suits at Showtime are apparently sitting around, having light conversations about ways to beat a dead horse:

I’ll be honest and say that I’m a man who generally hates surprises. Surprise parties, surprise dates, surprise pregnancies, I’m not a fan of any of them. That being said, Mars: War Logs was not only a surprise, but a pretty pleasant one. It won’t make any Game of the Year lists, and it certainly won’t change the landscape of video games, but for a mostly under the radar downloadable title, it certainly stands out more than it looks like it should.
First off, no, this game is not about martian beavers stuck in a monumental turf wars. The title War Logs refers to the diaries kept by characters within the game, but come on, how many other words are there for “logs” that would have worked infinitely better?
From the outside, this is a game that doesn’t have much going for it. A...

"Mad Men" conspiracy theory season is officially upon us. Due to a perfect storm of creator Matthew Weiner's infamous secrecy, a season packed with dark symbolism and a mysterious new character, "Mad Men" speculation has exploded into a national internet pastime.
People are freeze-framing the impossibly vague "Next week on 'Mad Men'" teases like they're the Zapruder film. The "Mad Men" Season 6 poster has been analyzed more than the cover of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's" album.
There are some fascinating theories out there. Is Megan Sharon Tate? Is Bob Benson a government spy? Could Megan already be dead? We are through the looking glass, people.
So let's break down five of the most widespread "Mad Men" theories and vote on which ones we think are actually plausible.
1. Megan is Sharon Tate, and she's going to be murdered.

Boys Like Girls are a Pop/Punk/Alternative/Rock band from the United States and have had two albums (Boys Like Girls & Love Drunk) released prior to this one on review today. Crazy World was released on the 11th December 2012 and sees the band take a slight detour away from their usual pop/punk routine. The album features definite country influences which I think enhance the album as a whole, and makes them stand out from the sea of American pop/rock bands. It also allows them to appeal to a large audience, which is always good.
Boys Like Girls took a break from working together after their second album released in 2010 and parted ways with their bassist Bryan Donahue in 2011. They hired his replacement Morgan Dorr in 2012 and then proceeded to release the first single ‘Be Your Everything’ on 14th August 2012.

Covering the horror scene as long as we have, we've seen some pretty eclectic cast lists, but with its assortment of reality TV stars, ex-baseball players, lady wrestlers, and a musician (oh yeah, there are a few regular actors in there, too), Gravedigger could be the oddest one yet!
From the Press Release:
Have you ever felt you needed to just bury your guilt? Literally...
Currently filming is 2013’s most gruesome tale of fear and fright, Gravedigger. A sinister collaboration among the minds of award-winning actor Keith Collins (Stuck in the Middle, The Meat Puppet), Doug Bollinger (Waltzing Anna), and Brandon Ruckdashel (“Co-ed Confidential”) and from the eerie ink of NY Emmy-award winning writer Joseph Pepitone and his brother, Billy Pepitone (Stuck in the Middle), Gravedigger is a horrifying shockfest that will keep you on the edge of your seat and the brink of insanity throughout a terrifying journey of paranoia.

Chicago – There was no film in 2012 that moved me more deeply or left me feeling more exhilarated than Stephen Cone’s achingly personal masterpiece, “The Wise Kids.” It’s the sort of film that I’ve been hoping to see get made for quite some time. Whereas so many films about people of faith rely on condescending stereotypes to push a contrived agenda, Cone’s picture is humanistic in every sense of the word.
From the titular trio down to the smallest speaking role, every single character in “The Wise Kids” is thrillingly alive. It’s clear that Cone has a deep understanding of the Southern Baptist community portrayed in his film. There are no easy answers for the questions this movie provokes, nor are there any heavy-handed speeches designed to spoon-feed glib morals. Cone wants to start a dialogue on vital issues rather than pretend to be the final word.

Awkwardness or no awkwardness, the Twilight trio have a movie to promote, and last night Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner made their first joint appearance since The Event last summer on MTV First.
I’m no body language expert, but I’ve studied my fair share of tabloids, and I would say that the interview was just as goofy and awkward as appearances by the trio normally are. Pattinson and Stewart joked around with each other — and, because I know you’re wondering, both joked around with Lautner too. Poor Lautner. Stuck in the middle of it all.

(In honor of Banned Books Week (September 30-October 6, 2012) we are reprinting this list from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and will be reprinting lots of stuff from them over the coming week to highlight their efforts. Donate now! —Cm)
Banned Books Week is upon us, and it’s telling that the event is more relevant than ever in its 30th year. Given their visual nature and the rampantly held misconception that comic books are for children, comics are among the most challenged and banned books in libraries and schools. Let’s take a look at some frequently challenged and banned comics…

Currently filming in New Jersey, The Meat Puppet has assembled one of the more unique casts we've seen in some time. From wrestlers to reality stars to a GnR guitarist and a former New York Yankee, this line-up is certainly one to be appreciated. Dig it.

The film opens and ends with a river, but it is more a tranquil river rather than a rogue one. Introspective Mara (Michelle Page, who looks like a Keira Knightley stand-in) spends too long gazing at this Rogue River; and her car is towed. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, Mara relies on the kindness of the stranger who appears at her side. Didn’t her mother warn her about getting into cars with strangers?
Jon (Bill Moseley) takes her home to his wife Lea (Lucinda Jenney)—no wait, she’s his sister!—who is preparing dinner. After some awkward conversation, Mara retires to bed; and everything gets really weird. Jon shows up in her bedroom in his underwear and freaks her out. Then she runs into Lea in a bathrobe in the kitchen. Lea pees on the floor whilst repeating some creepy phrase, yanks the wig off her head...

“It’s Mel Gibson” is what I kept thinking for the first 10 minutes of “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” or “Get the Gringo” if you live in the States. Once one of Hollywood’s most bankable actors, Mel Gibson’s spectacular fall from grace means that when he is starring in a new film, it’s like spending time with an old friend that doesn’t come around too often.
In “How I Spent My Summer Vacation,” Mel Gibson plays a criminal (known only as Driver) in a getaway car being chased by police along the Mexican border. Desperate to escape, Driver steers his car over a mound of dirt and goes straight through the border wall and into Mexico. However, waiting for him on the other side are corrupt Mexican police officials who, after noticing the car is full of money, take Gibson into custody.

Oscar-winning screenwriter of 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire Simon Beaufoy will again be collaborating with director Danny Boyle (who's got some Oscar hardware of his own). This time the duo will be adapting Toby Barlow's novel-length poem Sharp Teeth for the big screen.
And these dogs bite ... hard.
Beaufoy recently sat down with io9 to talk about just how they would go about creating this lycanthropic tale. "Sharp Teeth is a really fantastic novel-length poem," Beaufoy said. "It's gangland La, except the gangs happen to also shapeshift into dogs. It's all about the pack dynamics — it's very mad, but really fabulous."
Considering the best way to bring these were-creatures to life, Beaufoy mentioned that the easiest method might not be the most effective way. "They're kind of dogs, more than werewolves," Beaufoy said. "It'll probably not (be animated), that would be too easy. We have to make life much more...

Considering the best way to bring these were-creatures to life, Beaufoy mentioned that the easiest method might not be the most effective way. "They're kind of dogs, more than werewolves," Beaufoy said. "It'll probably not (be animated), that would be too easy. We have to make life much more...

At one point in time Sharp Teeth was to have been the follow up to Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy’s 127 Hours. The two have collaborated on projects such as Slumdog Millionaire before that, and both produced award-winning results. But scheduling, projects, and the sheer difficulty of adapting the Sharp Teeth story have prevented these two from teaming up once more.
Its no surprise that we haven’t heard anything from the Sharp Teeth newswire. For one thing Boyle is busy working on Trance. He is also getting ready for the Opening Ceremonies at this years Olympic Games, which will be followed up by editing Trance.
Beaufoy, coming off writing the script for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, is working on the script to Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games. However he hopes that after Boyle is done. i09 spoke to Beaufoy who said, “I’ve been talking...

Our first and, until now, only update on the prospective Danny Boyle film Sharp Teeth came in the early part of 2011; even then, the extent of our knowledge depended solely on comments from Simon Beaufoy, who was trying to crack the process of adapting Toby Barlow‘s “werewolves-in-gangland-la” novel. Easier said than done, as he summed up the adaptation process by saying, “If you get it wrong, it’s a disaster. If you get it right, it’s extraordinary.”
An interview that Beaufoy conducted with i09 saw the project raised once more, yet he sounded about as far into the process as 13 months ago. Lately, he’s “been talking with Danny [Boyle] about it,” but the man’s still “gotta get the script right first.” (He is very busy, to be fair.) If one area has been pinned down, it’s a big one: their approach to and depiction of the main creatures.

Danny Boyle is a talented man with many interests. One only need look at his filmography to “get” that. Dude has gone from directing a zombie movie to sci-fi to a real-life movie about a man who cuts off his own hand to escape a boulder. So why not direct a movie about La gangs that are actually shape-shifting dogs? That’s apparently what writer Simon Beaufoy is working on, and he’s revealed that he’s trying to get Boyle to direct the film, which will be based on the book called “Sharp Teeth” by Toby Barlow. More on it: An ancient race of lycanthropes survives in modern La and its numbers are growing as packs convert the city’s downtrodden into their fold. Stuck in the middle are a local dogcatcher and the woman he loves, whose secret past haunts her as she fights a bloody one-woman battle to save their relationship.
