Back in 2009, James Dashner released The Maze Runner, the first of what was to become a series of novels consisting of a main trilogy, two prequel novels, and a planned sequel trilogy, as well as a companion volume. The story is a dystopian narrative that focuses on a group of children who have to survive the Maze, but ultimately discover that the world they are in is in ruins and that there is a dark secret behind everything. The series was picked up for a live-action adaptation in 2011, and the first movie was released in 2014. Two additional movies were released, with The Death Cure ending the trilogy in 2018.
But, while it’s been just six years since the final movie of the original trilogy, The Hollywood Reporter revealed an exclusive scoop that 20th Century Studios is working on a reboot of The Maze Runner film series, although details are still very scarce.

A reboot of The Maze Runner is in the works at Disney!
The original film trilogy grossed more than $900 million worldwide and turned Dylan O’Brien into a household name. The three films, directed by Wes Ball and based on the best-selling books by James Dashner, were released by 20th Century Fox between 2014 and 2018.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the Disney’s 20th Century Studios is working on a reboot with Transcendence writer Jack Paglen in negotiations to write the script.
The original franchise followed “a group of teens who find themselves arriving in a walled setting named the Glade with their memories wiped out. Beyond the four walls of the encampment lies a maze, filled with deadly mechanical creatures and doors that shut every night at sundown. One new arrival figures out the key to the groups’ survival and attempts to lead them out.”
So, what will the reboot be about?...

According to THR, 20th Century Studios is looking to reboot The Maze Runner franchise based on the best-selling novels by James Dashner. The studio is currently in negotiations with Jack Paglen (Transcendence) to write the script for the new film.
The Maze Runner was released in 2014 and followed a group of memory-wiped teenagers who are trapped in a walled area known as the Glade. The only way out lies beyond an ever-changing maze, which is filled with deadly mechanical creatures. The film was followed by Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in 2015 and Maze Runner: The Death Cure in 2018.
Before you start getting up in arms over 20th Century Studios rebooting a franchise which wrapped up less than a decade ago, sources say that this project won’t be a redo of the original story or a direct sequel. Instead, the producers hope to make it a “continuation of the story...

Exclusive: Producer Kate Cohen (Jane Got a Gun) has tapped Oscar nominee Lesley Paterson (All Quiet on the Western Front) and Simon Marshall to script a feature adaptation of Viktor Frankl’s classic treatise, Man’s Search for Meaning. For Paterson’s husband and writing partner, Marshall, the project has taken on particular resonance of late, having just been diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer.
Translated into 50 languages, with over 16 million copies sold, Frankl’s riveting account of his time in the Nazi concentration camps, and his exploration of the human will to find meaning in spite of unspeakable adversity, has offered solace and guidance to generations of readers since it was first published in 1946. At the heart of his work is the conviction that the primary human drive is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but rather the pursuit of meaning.

Back in 2019, “Iron Man 3” production executive Chris Fenton filed an explosive lawsuit against former employer Dmg Entertainment, a once-highflying company that bridged Hollywood movies and Chinese distribution.
After a legal back and forth that included a Dmg countersuit that was later tossed, Fenton’s case is finally headed to trial next week and is expected to expose some of the opaque ways China did business in Hollywood before tensions between the U.S. and the communist superpower boiled over in 2021, leading studios to reassess their plans for the market. On Oct. 23, Fenton v. Dmg is scheduled to begin in California Superior Court, with Robert Downey Jr. and tentpole producer Neal Moritz expected to be on the witness list.
Although Fenton, a former William Morris agent who worked at Dmg for 17 years, is a respected member of the Hollywood community with a Washington, D.C., presence as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations,...

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

The film, Oppenheimer, is Nolan’s follow-up feature after the mixed reception of his high-concept sci-fi 2020’s Tenet. It’s been 13 years since the Galactica reached Earth. We watched in the 2009 finale “Daybreak” as Admiral Adama, President Roslin, Apollo, Starbuck, Gaius Baltar, and Caprica Six walked towards a bright and unwritten future in their new home. It was a cathartic (but predictably divisive) ending to a six-year TV journey that remains one of the best and most influential in science fiction history. There’s no question that Battlestar Galactica paved the way for other serious, gritty political sci-fi dramas like The Expanse and the recently released Foundation adaptation.
But Battlestar Galactica‘s legacy is one thing. What about its future? That’s a question NBCUniversal has struggled to answer in the years since our heroes first touched down on our planet. The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial has grabbed headlines due to the often grotesque and sordid details of the couple’s troubled marriage. But the jurors are also being asked to consider whether either of them suffered actual career damage from the other’s lies about them.
And while there is evidence that both of their careers have been hurt, it’s much trickier to try to connect that damage to specific defamatory statements.
Depp has alleged that he lost tens of millions of dollars because of Heard’s allegations of domestic violence, which she alluded to in a 2018 op-ed. But the testimony showed that Depp was a star in serious decline even before the allegations, and a series of legal setbacks made him virtually unemployable by major studios.

So, the finale has come, and the general feeling toward Halo as a show hasn’t really changed. To be fair, the feeling was set before the show even premiered on Paramount+, as many fans of the games were quite vocal when expressing their doubts about how well the show would do. This episode did manage to get back to the action, kind of, but it almost feels like it was too little, too late when it came to convincing people that this show was back on track. On top of that, many folks are of the mind that it didn’t

This Halo article contains spoilers.
Paramount+’s Halo TV series has finished the fight…at least for now. Leaving us with more questions than answers, the season 1 finale, “Transcendence,” is a bumpy ride that may leave fans of the games dissatisfied. In fact, the nine-episode first season ends with the Halo ring itself still a mysterious goal for both the alien Covenant and the human Unsc.
While the show remains frustratingly elusive about storylines we know very well after 20 years of video games, we can speculate about some of the most burning questions after the Halo finale…
Will Master Chief Ever Find the Halo Ring?
Halfway through the season, it was clear the Halo rings that serve as the setting for many of the games wouldn’t be a big part of the show. Instead, characters found a lot of other things in the course of trying to get to...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the Halo season finale “Transcendence.”
Halo bounces back from a conflicting moment with an action-packed finale that’s reminiscent of the games and sets a new path forward for John, Cortana, Halsey and more.
Written by Steve Kane and Kyle Killen, “Transcendence” picks up after the brutal Spartan-on-Spartan battle. John (Pablo Schreiber), bloodied and bruised, stumbles around the rubble to reach Kai (Kate Kennedy) and search for Makee (Charlie Murphy). The Covenant spy and his one night stand escaped via Phantom with the artifact to High Charity.
Amid the chaos on Reach, Vannak (Bentley Kalu) threatens to kill Kai but John tells his fellow super soldiers about Halsey’s brainwashing, with the help of Captain Keyes (Danny Sapani). John convinces them to work with him to regain the artifact. Before they could leave for High Charity and the Covenant, Kai pursues Halsey and...

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Hulu is certainly hoping its version is the definitive one.

"Tell me - do you enjoy existing?" Damn, what a question. Saban Films has released an official trailer for the film Chariot, an intriguing psychological thriller mixed with a bit of sci-fi. A story about a corporation and a doctor, played by John Malkovich, that oversees the process of reincarnation, and a young man named Harrison who becomes a glitch in the system when he encounters a woman he loved in a previous life. That concept initially makes me think of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind along with that Transcendence movie, though involving reincarnation and not A.I. this time. Another description states the film is a "dark and twisted thriller." Thomas Mann stars with Rosa Salazar, plus Scout Taylor Compton, Vernon Davis, Chris Mullinax, Shane West, and Malkovich. I'm not really sure what to make of this - could be good, but could also be bad, as there...

Exclusive: Actor-producer Cory Hardrict has set Conmen as the first feature to be produced under his Hardcor Films banner, after completing 30% of a $100M capital raise through Veritas Gold Productions’ Perennial Film Fund to support an upcoming slate of 10-15 productions.
Hardrict will star opposite Neil Brown Jr. in Conmen, which is one of four films he intends to make through Hardcor this year. The upcoming feature to be directed by Mike Tiddes will watch as two Black conmen take on the guise of FBI agents in order to rip off a heroin-dealing Klansman and his Sheriff’s son. Brown and Robert McEveety wrote the script. Ryan Lewis is also attached to produce the pic, with Brown co-producing. While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

Prior to starring in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl back in 2003, nobody had ever pegged Johnny Depp as an A-list movie star. He was certainly a big name who had the respect of both his peers and audiences around the world, but he was rarely on the radar when it came to casting major roles in big budget blockbusters.
Even when he was shooting his first outing as Jack Sparrow, there was a mixture of confusion and fear from the Disney hierarchy about how he was pitching his performance, but once the box office numbers came in and the eccentric swashbuckler became an instant pop culture icon, the actor’s Academy Award nominated approach had been completely vindicated.
From there, he soon became the highest-paid talent in Hollywood, going home with fat paychecks even when the projects turned out to be colossal duds. He picked...

On one hand, you can’t help but admire the loyalty and dedication of Johnny Depp‘s fans, who have constantly backed the actor throughout the last several turbulent years of his career that have seen him dropped from two major blockbuster franchises and faced with a never-ending series of legal battles, with many insiders and analysts predicting that the 57 year-old’s standing in the industry has been dealt irreparable damage.
However, on the other side of the coin, there’s a feeling that many of his supporters are veering dangerously close to fanatical territory. As well as the various petitions to have him reinstated as Pirates of the Caribbean‘s Jack Sparrow while also attempting to have his ex-wife Amber Heard fired as Aquaman 2′s Mera, the Animaniacs revival faced backlash from a vocal minority for an out of date reference to a meme that was interpreted as a crack at Depp’s expense,...

Following the outcome of his latest court case, industry analysts are forecasting the worst for Johnny Depp‘s career prospects. Having now lost out on Fantastic Beasts as well as Pirates of the Caribbean, the 57 year-old is missing two major sources of income with more legal battles on the horizon against ex-wife Amber Heard.
It may have been his role as Captain Jack Sparrow that rocketed him to the top of the Hollywood A-list and made him the highest-paid actor in the business, but Depp was hardly short of a few pennies before then. As one of the most reliable and acclaimed talents of his generation, he’d been picking up sizeable checks for years, including a $5 million payday for box office dud Nick of Time as far back as 1995.

Chinese moviegoers are set for a Christopher Nolan bonanza on the big screen: the director’s sci-fi epic “Tenet” will launch in Chinese theaters on Sept. 4, a week after an Aug. 28 re-release of his 2010 film “Inception” and a month after a re-run of “Interstellar.”
“Tenet,” starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, is expected to be the first China release for a major new Hollywood title — that the rest of the world has not already had access to for months — since the country shut theaters in January.
The film will not have a traditional global day-and-date release. Since theaters in the U.S. haven’t opened to a significant degree, Warner Bros. opted to begin rolling out the film in international markets starting on Aug. 26. It will open in select U.S. cities over Labor Day weekend on Sept. 3. However, theaters in major domestic markets like Los Angeles and New...

“Tenet” announced Wednesday that it has passed government approvals for a theatrical release in China, an indication that an official release date is now on the horizon.
The film has released a poster in Chinese, swapping the English tagline “time runs out” for a clarion call to return to cinemas that roughly translates to “make every second count; invade the theaters.”
Chinese cinemas reopened in regions at low risk for Covid-19 on July 20, taking in $12.6 million in their opening weekend. Currently, around 44% of its cinemas are back in business, but have been required to operate at just 30% capacity to allow for social distancing, as well as reduce their total number of screenings to half their usual tally.
Additionally, guidelines for reopening released by the National Film Bureau request that cinemas not screen films that are over two hours long — which could potentially pose problems for “Tenet,” which runs at two hours and 31 minutes.

Ali Abbasi's Border (2018) is having its exclusive online premiere on Mubi in the United Kingdom. It is showing from July 12 – August 10, 2019.Transcendence is a corporeal mechanism, as it dwells on the slim border dividing human from inhuman. Precisely this convergence of carnality and affect is what Ali Abbasi’s second feature film, Border (2018), touches upon. Tina (Eva Melander) is apathetic to the pleasures of society and relationships, yet she possesses an uncanny gift: to smell what people are feeling. Her compartmentalized being is stirred when she meets Vore (Eero Milonoff), their vertiginous infatuation reminiscing the Platonic myth of the androgyne: two souls in a single body. The truth, however, is far more unchaste. In Tina’s world, emotions acquire smell, aggression and passion become equally associated with sex, exacerbated by Nature’s sheltering landscapes. Her character is more intimate with the forest, than with people, and, for once, animalistic behavior is not condemned.

Irish actor Cillian Murphy is in talks to join John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” sequel along with Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe.
Krasinski is returning to direct the untitled sequel for Paramount. “A Quiet Place” grossed $340 million at the global box office last year. Since then, the film has won several awards, including the Screen Actors Guild Award for Blunt in the supporting actress category.
Krasinski also wrote the screenplay with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, and the trio received a Writers Guild nomination in the original category. Paramount announced in August that it had dated the sequel to “A Quiet Place” for May 15, 2020.
Krasinski directed and starred in the story of an isolated family of four that must live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound. He’s been working on the script for the sequel with Woods and Beck and announced last month that he was directing.

The feeling and emotion a cinephile find within themselves when they witness a cinematic masterpiece unfold in front of their eyes is a magical, no scratch that, unfathomable ideal that is an exhilarating and unquestionable abstract thirst and can only be quenched with seeking out more exquisite forms of cinematic sensation. Steven Knight’s latest does not usher such ecstatic reactions. Quite the antithesis in fact. A film comparable to that of Wally Pfister’s twenty-fourteen film Transcendence that explodes on instant impact of release with a tremendous cast list utterly dissipated in what quite possibly may be one of the most diabolical ventures in film in the last two decades.

At the same time Focus will go nationwide with the release of On the Basis of Sex after two weeks in limited release and Annapurna will do the same with If Beale Street Could Talk. After holding on even better than expected last weekend, look for WB's Aquaman...
