1992’s The Lawnmower Man and 1995’s Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace are making their UK Blu-ray debuts.
Here’s an intriguing pair of 1990s features, that are being bundled together for their first ever appearance on Blu-ray in the UK. 1992’s The Lawnmower Man and its sequel, 1995’s Lawnmower Man: Beyond Cyberspace are both arriving in a new double pack.
The 1992 original in particular was really rather groundbreaking. Notwithstanding the fact that it was the film Stephen King went to court to get his name taken off (when he realised how little the resultant movie had to do with the book it was supposedly based on), The Lawnmower Man was also the first big screen virtual reality movie. Not in an interactive sense, more in a strange shapes getting fruity with each other sense. It was quite a big screen experience too.
Brett Leonard directed, with Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey starring.

Osbourne went on to say that West was “Refused Permission Because He Is An Antisemite And Has Caused Untold Heartache To Many.”
“He Went Ahead And Used The Sample Anyway At His Album Listening Party Last Night. I Want No Association With This Man,” Osbourne wrote.

From games being strewn across an ever-increasing number of networks and streamers, it is getting extremely difficult for football fans to watch all of the games.
The NFL’s Super Wild Card Weekend and Divisional rounds are over, and as usual, the first two rounds of the league’s postseason had some thrillers, along with some clunkers. One of the biggest talking points following the games so far has been the debate over the wisdom of placing an NFL playoff game — one of the ratings prizes of the entire television year — exclusively on a streaming service for a national audience. Peacock’s first-ever streaming-exclusive playoff game drew good ratings for the Wild Card matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, so when coupled with the fact that “Thursday Night Football” games air on Prime Video and most “Monday Night Football” contests also stream on ESPN+, the NFL has...

Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, has issued a statement in Hebrew on his Instagram expressing regret over his antisemitic comments over the past year.
That includes recent statements allegedly made in Las Vegas earlier this month, and caught by live streamers in attendance, invoking Hitler and Jesus Christ alongside himself, and addressing his loss of brand sponsorships and partnerships during a Vultures album event, as reported by Rolling Stone.
Set to release on Jan. 12, the album’s title track, which features Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Durk and Bump J, seemingly addresses previous criticism of Ye, with the rapper stating, “How I’m antisemitic? I just fucked a Jewish bitch.”
Ye, who deleted all his previous Instagram posts leaving only his recent apology, wrote on Tuesday that he regretted his “unplanned outburst,” seemingly alluding to the Vegas event, as translated by The Jerusalem Post.

Between “Beckham,” “Quarterback” and the nationally captivating “The Last Dance,” we are clearly living in our peak sports docuseries era. And now four-time, NBA champion LeBron James and hall of famers Peyton Manning have combined with the Obamas’ production company to contribute their own sports series centered around the NBA, Variety has confirmed.
James’ SpringHill Company (which he started with business partner Maverick Carter) will join Manning’s production company Omaha Productions and the Obamas’ Higher Ground. The series will divide up each episode following various NBA athletes as they live their lives, similar to the Netflix docuseries “Quarterback,” which followed three NFL quarterbacks during the 2022-2023 football season.
Higher Ground’s “American Factory” won the Academy Award for best documentary in 2019 and past films “Crip Camp” and “Becoming” were both nominated. The production company currently has a first look deal with Netflix, so assumptions are being made that this...

At the risk of sounding antisemitic, I’m not overly concerned about antisemitism. I don’t sweat the increasing number of neo-Nazis or the rise of rabid antisemitic dialogue across the internet. Rarely do I stress over celebrity slander or anti-Israel rallies at universities. But I am Jewish after all, so I have to worry about something. So, what does concern me? It’s not the hate from the few. It’s the indifference of the many.
I’d imagine that most people would be surprised to hear that Jews make up only about 2% of the U.S. population, and only 0.2 percent of the global population. Even in America, many adults have never met a Jew before. So why should someone who has no connection to Jewish culture care about Jewish people? The answer is that they probably shouldn’t.

Idris Elba is looking to find a mindful approach to acting.
The “Hijack” star shared during the “Changes With Annie Macmanus” podcast that he has started therapy to cope with being an “absolute workaholic.”
“I work in an industry [where] I’m rewarded for those unhealthy habits. I’m rewarded for them,” Elba said. “I’m an absolute workaholic. And that isn’t great for life, generally.”
He continued, “I’ve been in therapy […] about a year now. It’s a lot right? In my therapy, I’ve been thinking a lot about changing…like neuropaths being shifted. It’s not because I don’t like myself or anything like that. It’s just because I have some unhealthy habits that have really formed. […] Nothing that’s too extreme is good, everything needs balance. The James Bond character has had many superstars eager to fill its shoes, including Idris Elba. The respected actor has often received massive fan support for the role. But he wondered if certain audiences wanted him to be Bond for the wrong reasons.
Idris Elba felt it would be off-putting if fans wanted him to be James Bond for this reason Idris Elba | Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic
Elba usually finds his name attached to the James Bond character in one way or another. Even after Daniel Craig was secured as the character, Elba was still touted as a possible successor for the franchise. The actor was well aware of this seemingly overwhelming fan support he’d had for being the next Bond. And he once felt that if fans had the power of film studios, he might have been cast.

Will Power’s Fetch Clay, Make Man is coming to Culver City thanks to LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Company and Center Theatre Group.
The play, focused on the unlikely friendship of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and Hollywood icon Stepin Fetchit, will hit the stage at the Kirk Douglas Theatre from June 25-July 16 with Debbie Allen at the helm in her Ctg directorial debut. Opening night is set for June 25.
The story explores the bond that formed when the two met in the days leading up to one of Ali’s most anticipated fights, with one described as “a vibrant and audacious youth, the other a resentful and widely resented relic — each fighting to form their public personas and shape their legacies amidst the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-1960s.”

Springhill, the production, consumer product and brand consultancy company founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, is cutting some staffers while saying it’s poised to expand its total number of employees this year.
“This was an internal reorganization,” a spokesperson for the Los Angeles-based entertainment firm said. “10 positions were eliminated, and we are hiring 24 more people. The positions were largely administrative, and we are building in sales and creative.” The company has about 200 employees currently.
CEO Carter informed staffers of the layoffs and reorganization on Monday. The Springhill Company, founded in 2020 with a reported 100 million in backing from investors, rolls up multiple entertainment firms backed by James and Carter.
Those three divisions include the namesake production company, Springhill Entertainment (originally founded in 2015), which backs projects like Warner Bros.’ Space Jam: A New Legacy and the House Party revival, Adam Sandler’s basketball film Hustle on Netflix, game show The Wall...

The Kanye West backlash over his antisemitic remarks could be the reason he is denied entry into Australia. Sky News reported that the rapper was planning a trip Down Under to visit his partner’s family.
“People like that who’ve applied for visas to get into Australia in the past have been rejected,” Minister for Education Jason Clare told Channel Nine in an interview. “I expect that if he does apply he would have to go through the same process and answer the same questions that they did.”
West, who goes by Ye, made a series of antisemitic comments in October 2022 and doubled down on his sentiments as he went on an interview tour that included Fox News’ Tucker Carlson’s show and The Shop, which ultimately scrapped the episode due to the severeness of his remarks. The rapper was subsequently dropped by Adidas and other business deals.

Newly revealed footage shows that Kanye West made antisemitic comments and a series of other bizarre claims that were left out of his interview last week with Tucker Carlson.
The interview ran over two nights on Carlson’s top-rated Fox News show, and the host held West, now known as Ye, as a victim of left wing cancel culture and woke politics, first and foremost being the reaction to the rapper’s wearing of a White Lives Matter shirt at Paris fashion week.
In one of the clips, obtained and published by Vice News’s Motherboard, Ye complains about sending his kids to a school that celebrates Kwanzaa. “I prefer my kids knew Hanukkah than Kwanzaa. At least it will come with some financial engineering,” he said.

Famous exes Drew Barrymore and Justin Long reunited and reflected on their relationship. Long appeared on the season three premiere of "The Drew Barrymore Show" on Sept. 12, and the duo took the opportunity to talk about their past relationship and how much they've changed in the years since.
The show shared a clip of Long's appearance on its Twitter account. "I feel like we've been through so much together," Barrymore explained in the video, wiping tears from her eyes. "When we used to talk and FaceTime I was always like, 'You know, I've really grown up, Justin.' I always wanted to prove to you what a different person I was than when we dated."
Long said, "You were the best." Barrymore continued, "We had so much fun but we were more hedonistic. A little more immature. We would get together, we would break up. It was chaos. It was hella fun.

Idris Elba has been in dozens of hit films, but the role he gets asked about most is one he never played.
“I’m not gonna lie,” he said in the most recent episode of The Shop podcast, which is exec produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, “every corner of the world I go — and I’m talking about different cultures — they always go: ‘Bond!'” Elba said pointing his finger in imitation of a fan.
And Elba, despite years of queries, is still willing to address speculation about the role.
“It is not a goal for my career,” the actor said bluntly. “I don’t think that, you know, playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals.”
But, he said, “It will definitely satisfy the will of a nation,” referencing the legions of fans who would like to see him as 007.
“And I feel it is beyond me at this junction.

Idris Elba has said that debates about Black British actors taking roles away from Black American performers prompt an “unintelligent argument”.
The conversation around casting reached its peak when Daniel Kaluuya was nominated for an Oscar for his starring role in Get Out, a film about racism in the US.
At the time, Samuel L Jackson famously commented: “I tend to wonder what that movie would have been with an American brother who really understands that,” suggesting that racism was different in the US to the UK.

The upcoming Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance Somebody” stars BAFTA-winning actor Naomi Ackie as the legendary singer, which means the debate over Black British actors taking roles away from American actors is bound to resurface. The debate surged in 2017 after Samuel L. Jackson called out Daniel Kaluuya’s casting in “Get Out,” for which the actor earned an Oscar nomination.
“I tend to wonder what that movie would have been with an American brother who really feels that,” Jackson said.
In a new interview on “The Shop” (via The Root), Idris Elba railed against the claim that Black British actors take roles away from American actors. Naomi Ackie’s role in “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” served as a launching pad for the discussion. Talk show host Maverick Carter asked Elba about Ackie’s casting, noting that Black American women might criticize a Black British actor playing an American icon.

Firestarter doesn’t exactly have a legacy to uphold. Stephen King’s 1980 novel is not considered one of his signature works. Derivative of Carrie (1974), but without its emotional depth and horror, the novel is a pulpy and fitfully entertaining mess. But its pyrokinetic heroine and the suspenseful chase structure could lend themselves to a gripping film adaptation. And maybe one day, they will.
The latest adaptation of Firestarter, however, isn’t it. Both an adaptation of the novel and a remake of the largely derided 1984 film, the movie is a disappointing endeavor hampered by a weak script, lifeless acting, and unconvincing special effects. A few atmospheric and technical flourishes keep it from being a total dumpster fire, but the spark just isn’t there.
The film starts with an intriguing credits sequence, observing young Andy McGee (Zac Efron) and his wife, Vicky (Sydney Lemmon), as they volunteer for a medical...

Zac Efron stars in this Blumhouse-produced remake of the 1984 thriller, based on a novel by Stephen King. Unfortunately, though the Blumhouse name is usually a sign of reasonable quality, something seems to have gone wrong this time round, because Firestarter is a distinct disappointment that lacks anything even remotely resembling a spark.
The plot begins with a distortion-heavy flashback sequence that plays during the opening credits and establishes that Andy McGee (Zac Efron) and girlfriend Vicky Tomlinson were both part of an experimental programme in their college years, where they were given a dose of a low-grade hallucinogen called Lot-6 and exhibited special powers. Years later, Andy and Vicky, now married, are on the run with their pre-teen daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), who’s beginning...

In the ’70s and early ’80s, the era that defined him, Stephen King came up with a whole lot of horror-story metaphors for anger. There was Carrie, the angry telekinetic nerd-turned-pranked-prom-demon, and Christine the angry car, and Cujo the angry dog, and the novel that was the greatest of King’s rage mythologies — “The Shining,” published in 1977, which was all about the hidden anger of middle-class men, with the frustrated aspiring writer Jack Torrance (not a domestic abuser but the sort of man who would have a few drinks and then yank his son’s arm too forcefully) standing in for what was at the time a new awareness of the ideology of masculine fury. Jack Torrance was a portrait in the self-justifying nature of toxic male anger, which is why the gothic tale of his descent still resonates.

Of all the Stephen King adaptations, Mark L. Lester’s “Firestarter” is hardly the most celebrated. The 1984 original, starring a young Drew Barrymore as a pyrokinetic child, has some impressive visual effects, but it’s narratively thin, thematically clunky, and marred by the offensive casting of George C. Scott as Rainbird, a Cherokee assassin.
Needless to say, remaking “Firestarter” is not, in itself, such a bad idea. There was certainly room for improvement.
One can only applaud the new filmmakers for casting indigenous actor Michael Greyeyes in the Rainbird role, but somehow the improvements stop there. The new “Firestarter” is a lot like the old “Firestarter,” if the old “Firestarter” was duller, cheaper, and devoid of almost all meaning.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong (“Black Widow”) stars as Charlie McGee, a young girl with a big secret: She can make fire with her mind. Her parents Andy (Zac Efron) and Vicky also...

From "Carrie" to "The Stand" and beyond, the works of American author Stephen King have been adapted by multiple generations. The latest King project to get an adaptation is "Firestarter," based on his 1980 sci-fi thriller novel of the same name. The story concerns Charlie McGee, a young girl who is inadvertently gifted with powers of pyrokinesis as a result of government-controlled experiments on her parents. Following the murder of her mother, Charlie and her father Andy flee from the agency responsible, known as The Shop. The plot should sound vaguely familiar to fans of "Stranger Things," which took inspiration from King's novel...

Capitalizing on a red-hot deal market, LeBron James’s SpringHill Company has sold what it calls a “significant” minority stake to RedBird Capital Partners, Fenway Sports Group, Nike and Epic Games.
The deal values SpringHill at $725 million. Negotiations with a group of investors had been reported over the summer and again in September. Even though his LA Lakers bowed out in the first round of the NBA playoffs last spring, James had a successful outing in July as star and producer of Warner Bros’ Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The new investment will enable SpringHill to expand its existing businesses and explore new categories and global markets. The company said it will consider M&a opportunities and connect with the creator community. LeBron James’ consumer and entertainment shop The SpringHill Company has closed a minority stake sale to a consortium of investors, bringing its valuation to $725 million.
As Variety reported last month, the investors include RedBird Capital Partners, Fenway Sports Group and Nike. Also included in a Thursday announcement was Epic Games, which will usher the NBA legend’s company and its CEO Maverick Carter into the world of gaming. Uc Investments, an early participant in the company, has also expanded its position.
While the size of the stake on the table was not disclosed, insiders said James and Carter maintain controlling interest.
The investment will “enable SpringHill to significantly expand its current businesses of IP development, commerce, content, brand consulting and live events,” the company said.

LeBron James is looking for a slam dunk of a new overall deal for his content company SpringHill Entertainment, insiders familiar with the talks told Variety.
