Sienna Miller starred opposite Ben Affleck in the 2016 gangster drama “Live by Night,” which Affleck also directed. The Warner Bros. release starred Affleck as a bootlegger turned gangster and Miller as his love interest, who also happens to be the mistress of a powerful mob boss. According to Miller, her chemistry with Affleck hardly burned the screen down.
“Ben Affleck was like my brother [on set],” Miller said on “The Drew Barrymore Show” (via EW). “I’ve never laughed so much in my life. I mean that sounds like a ridiculous thing to say and like a name dropping thing to say, but I actually mean it.”
“We had zero chemistry whatsoever. It was hysterical,” Miller added. “We were supposed to be in love. We could not be less attracted to each other, which was hysterical. He has an enormous head, I have a small one, so they’d have to like...

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

Sienna Miller and Diego Luna in Wander Darkly
There’s always an element of gambling involved when an already happy couple have a child. As a society, we tend to assume that it will bring them closer together and help them achieve a state of bliss, but the reality of missed sleep, constant work and having to set everything else aside to focus on the needs of an utterly unreasonable newcomer can do the opposite. Adrienne (Sienna Miller) and Matteo (Diego Luna) quickly reach a point where they’re taking the stress out on each other. Then life is interrupted by a shocking event. Only a difficult journey through their shared memories has the potential to bring them back together.
The course of love does not run smooth
Memory is a tricky thing. It doesn’t always spool out in linear order, and attempts to disentangle it can lead to unexpected shifts in perspective.

A Guide to Avoiding #OscarsSoWhite: Instructions for Academy Voters Before Filling Out Their Ballots
⊗ Film is supposed to be inclusive. But if you can’t see yourself on-screen, do you feel as if you even exist? One-third of our lives is spent at work, and the artists who express their creativity through cinema deserve to have their work seen, and not just because of the color of their skin or their gender but because when you are exposed to an experience different from your own, your creativity grows. Take a moment to review this list of eligible films, putting a check mark on the ones you have seen from this year. Ideally, that will leave you with a clearer picture of how you are contributing to cinema’s evolution with your votes.
Your goal should be to watch all of these films, but let’s be realistic. Try seeing at least 60% of them. All meet the Academy’s diversity requirements — in front of or...

ReFrame and IMDbPro have given 29 of the 100 most popular scripted films of 2020 the ReFrame Stamp, which is as a mark of distinction for projects that have achieved gender-balanced hiring. This is a 12% increase over 2019.
ReFrame is a coalition of industry professionals and partner companies founded by Women In Film and Sundance Institute The organization’s mission is to increase the number of women of all backgrounds working in film, TV, and media. IMDbPro launched the ReFrame Stamp in 2018. The Stamp is based on intersectional criteria developed by ReFrame in consultation with ReFrame Ambassadors and other industry experts.
Topping the 2020 list in terms of the most popular film to meet ReFrame Stamp criteria is Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Old Guard, the first comic-based action pic to be helmed by a Black woman director. The film also showcased gender parity in front of and behind the camera.

Michael Almereyda has tackled science (as a topic of either biopics or dramas) in a fascinating way in “Experimenter” and “Marjorie Prime,” and now he’s bringing that same energy to the inventor-biopic with “Tesla” (Shout Factory/IFC), a bold and audacious look at the life of Nikola Tesla. Ethan Hawke, in the title role, is evenly matched by Eve Hewson’s Anne Morgan, and they both nail Almereyda’s unique tone, which throws in anachronisms and green-screens to tell the story of someone who stretched the notions of what his peers imagined could be possible.
Also available: Madison Iseman plays a young girl with mental-health issues who can’t convince anyone she’s witnessed a crime in “Fear of Rain” (Lionsgate); 2012 indie “Watching TV with the Red Chinese” (Mvd Visual), co-starring Constance Wu and Gillian Jacobs, makes its U.S. DVD debut; Sienna Miller and Diego Luna...

We’ve seen this before: a dreamy, warm tonal sequence of a new born baby. The standard adorable close ups and a couple staring, smiling at each other – as if to say, wow, look what we’ve made… The upbeat notes married perfectly with new life seems all too idyllic to be true (almost like Sienna Miller’s hair that doesn’t seem to be out of place at all). The sun is shining as the camera pans over green spaces and we are quickly slapped in the face by this couple’s new parents/no time for themselves dynamic.
While Matteo (Diego Luna) decides to start on some woodwork rather than get spruced up for date night, Adrienne(Sienna Miller) prays on all their relationship faults. Lengthy and fruitless quarrels emerge rather than a night escaping adult responsibilities, leaving a sour taste lingering opposed to the sickeningly sweet opening this couple had.

In Lionsgate’s Wander Darkly, Sienna Miller stars as Adrienne, a young mother whose relationship with her partner, Matteo (Diego Luna), is far from perfect. After they’re involved in a car accident, Adrienne’s sense of reality is shattered completely, and Matteo guides her on a time-bending tour of her life in which she goes back to her past and into her potential future. In conversation with THR, Miller and director Tara Miele discuss the origins of the genre-shifting drama, the challenges of its formula-breaking script, and keeping track of reality while making such a cerebral movie.

How to assess the financial success of Sundance 2020? Covid-19 makes standard box-office metrics impossible, but in sheer availability the titles reached a new high. About 85 percent of the 128 feature films and television programs that showed at Park City last year made their way to the broader public of North America, or will this year.
Revenue — the kind that’s visible to the naked eye — is another matter. All Sundance 2019 films that received a theatrical release totaled $125 million in domestic gross. Although pandemic delays mean multiple titles have yet to be released, the total box office for Sundance 2020 is a little over $18 million. That drop mirrors the overall box-office decline.
This is where we’d like to compare and contrast box-office figures, and make predictions about the current Sundance market, but the revenue or value generated by VOD, Premium VOD, or streaming — platforms where they (presumably) made the most money — are unknown.

“It was a beautiful experience,” says “Wander Darkly” producer Samantha Housman about the experience of bringing this unique love story to the screen. We talked with Housman as part of our “Meet the Experts” film producers panel. Watch our interview above.
Written and directed by Tara Miele, “Wander Darkly” tells the story of a couple (Sienna Miller and Diego Luna) struggling to figure out what’s real in the aftermath of a devastating car accident. “The movie is very much based on an accident that she got in with her husband,” Housman explains about Miele’s inspiration. And not just the accident: “The entire story of that movie is very much based on her marriage, and I think when you work on something that’s deeply personal to someone, it’s a very emotional experience.”

A version of this story about Sienna Miller and “Wander Darkly” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In a film that flits back and forth through time and space in a way that could get melodramatic, Sienna Miller creates a character in “Wander Darkly” so haunted and sharp that director Tara Miele’s head trip turns deeply emotional.
“It made me ask the existential questions that I’m interested in,” Miller told TheWrap. “The idea of analyzing the relationship with your partner from its conception, noticing the moments where you pivoted and went wrong, and how corrosive those small moments of miscommunication are. The idea of going back and reflecting was a really interesting thing for me.”

When composing the music for the animated film “Over the Moon,” Steven Price was actually able to draw a lot from his experience composing the score to Edgar Wright’s 2017 film, “Baby Driver.” “The score is embellishing those songs and layering it and making it do a different role and really enabling the song to act how a score does. The idea of weaving through songs has been something that has been in a lot of work,” the Oscar winner says during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). Price was then able to take that experience and apply it to songs written specifically for the film. “I kind of felt when ‘Over the Moon’ came up that this is great because I could try some of those techniques but with original songs and having a bit more control over how you can use things thematically.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg sat down with writer-director Tara Miele and actress Sienna Miller to discuss the pair’s new film, Wander Darkly, in a THR Presents Q&a powered by Vision Media. During the half-hour conversation, Miele revealed that the fantasy-like script sprung from surviving a bad car crash with her husband years earlier. Her heightened awareness of her mortality following the accident left her with “a sense of luck and gratitude every day [that] you aren’t dealing with tragedy,” she told THR.

When creating the intimate romance story of “Wander Darkly,” writer-director Tara Miele and stars Sienna Miller and Diego Luna found a wealth of inspiration from their life experiences.
The film, which takes a close look at mortality and life and death, was inspired by Miele’s experience surviving a severe car crash seven years ago. Experiencing a black out, a concussion and an extended recovery phase, Miele said she found a deeper appreciation for the small joys in life.
“We were at my parents’ for Thanksgiving, and they were fighting over the turkey and my kids were screaming,” she said during a Variety Streaming Room presented by Lionsgate. “And I just was so grateful to be there and so aware of how lucky we were to still be living these delicate little lives. That was the moment where I knew I wanted to bottle that and give it to as many people as I could.

Filmmakers often draw upon personal experiences for inspiration. And it was devastating car crash that was the catalyst for writer/director Tara Miele’s surreal time-bending romantic thriller “Wander Darkly,” which was released by Lionsgate on December 11. Sienna Miller and Diego Luna star as Adrienne and Matteo, a young unmarried couple with a baby and a new house who are in a horrible car crash on their way home from an emotionally taxing dinner. Adrienne actually believes she has died in the crash as drifts in and out of time in flashbacks, flashforwards, nightmares and dreams. Guiding her through this surreal experience is Matteo, who keeps popping up in her strange purgatory.

Diego Luna’s Wander Darkly character seems like he’d be a respite from the heaviness of playing a Rebel spy in Rogue One and a drug lord on Narcos: Mexico, but the actor surprisingly disagrees. In Tara Miele’s fourth feature film, Luna plays Matteo, a woodworker who’s forced to confront the trauma of his relationship with Sienna Miller’s Adrienne. The film’s metaphysical narrative delves into the couple’s differing memories as they reconcile their relationship amid the birth of their first child. Sienna Miller and Diego Luna star in writer-director Tara Miele’s “Wander Darkly” as a married couple with a baby who get into a horrible car crash.
The film follows both of them as they contemplate and examine their relationship, but it’s unclear if they are alive or were killed in the accident. The independent film was shot on a shoestring budget in and around Los Angeles in less than a month.
I chatted with Miller and Luna from London. Miller is in the U.K. shooting “Anatomy of a Scandal,” David E. Kelley’s Netflix series adaptation of Sarah Vaughan’s novel of the same name. Luna is in London filming the untitled Cassian Andor project, one of the many new “Star Wars” series coming to Disney Plus.
Diego, Tara told me your first day shooting was at the morgue when you had to be put into one of those freezer cabinets.

In “Wander Darkly,” Sienna Miller and Diego Luna star as a Los Angeles couple who get into a horrific car accident.
What happens after the crash, isn’t entirely clear. Maybe it was a fatal crash that left one or both of them dead or maybe not. The film is a series of flashbacks and dream-like sequences that takes the audience on a trippy roller coaster ride of emotions about love and family.
Writer and director Tara Miele’s script was partially inspired by her own experience in a car crash with her husband several years ago. Both survived, but Miele tells Variety, “There were some emotional points around the accident that were so resonant for me that they never went away. I kept talking about them after the fact.”
“Wander Darkly,” which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, is Miele’s fourth feature that she has written and directed.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year and immediately became the talk of the fest after it won Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Now, A24 is set to share this moving story with the world — well, in limited release at least. The family drama opens in select theaters for an awards season qualifying run but will open wider on February 12, 2021.
Written and directed by Chung, Minari parallels his life as it tells the story of a Korean-American family that uproots from metropolitan Los Angeles to rural Arkansas to chase the American Dream. Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Yuh-Jung Youn, Noel Kate Cho and Alan Kim, the film follows the family as the dynamics change in their new household when their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother comes to live with them. With everyone seemingly in the big December “frenzy” in preparing for the big holiday the next holiday just days afterward often gets a bit of a “and also” status. You know, as “Happy New Year” gets “tacked on” to the “Merry Christmas”, or just engulfed in the dreaded (by those few that still think there’s a “war” on it) “happy holidays”. Since current events and health concerns will probably curtail or just completely eliminate those big “seeing out the old” parties, you may have to virtually watch 2020 tick away. This quieter “big countdown” could make you really reflect on how your life “so far” is measuring up. As this week’s new film release shows, a big traumatic event could prompt that feeling more than the “midnight bubbly”. And that’s why this movie couple, for most of the story’s runtime, is compelled to Wander Darkly.

Collision Visions: Miele Taps Miller for Fractured Memory Exercise
For her fourth feature, director Tara Miele draws upon a traumatic event from her own past as inspiration for Wander Darkly, a narrative which utilizes an experimentally inclined non-linear narrative. The aftershocks of a major automobile collision sends one woman reeling, convinced she’s dead and residing in a cruel purgatory in which she must navigate past memories as if re-living them while simultaneously commenting on them alongside her husband, seemingly a guide on the journey who downplays her clinging to the idea she’s deceased.
Giving Sienna Miller one of her finest leading opportunities in well over a decade, it’s a mournful dream of Thanatos which is often more exciting to parse through after the end credits than it is as an actual viewing experience.…...

Sienna Miller hopes her revelation in September that the late Chadwick Boseman gave her some of his salary to make sure she was paid fairly for “21 Bridges” will create change in Hollywood. “It should get people thinking,” Miller, who stars in writer-director Tara Miele’s new drama “Wander Darkly” with Diego Luna, tells me. “Just take a beat: What that guy did for that woman — what can I do now? Let’s have some more transparency, at least. Let’s be fair.”

Fifteen years ago, Sienna Miller was that model-turned-actress who was dating Jude Law. Heavy tabloid attention gave way to a years-long hiatus from the screen which in turn gave way to a return for Miller in a big way. She gave one of her best performances (and one of the best performances by anyone in recent years) in American Woman, directed by Jake Scott, and has emerged as one of our most talented working performers.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Miller about her new film Wander Darkly (which is available this Friday in theaters and on demand), the challenges of filming something so tricky and twisty in less than a month, and finding the reality in the most labyrinthian of sequences.

To put it mildly, Sienna Miller is doing the work. Despite roles in major studio flicks such as “American Sniper” or “21 Bridges,” the British actress continues to make time for more challenging indie fare such as her lauded performance in the “American Woman” last year. Now, she’s back with another impressive turn in 2020 Sundance Film Festival selection “Wander Darkly,” which is finally available for public consumption this week.

Apple TV+ is in final negotiations for Carrie & Me, a new film adapted from Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story, Carol Burnett’s bestselling memoir about her daughter Carrie Hamilton. Tara Miele will write and direct the project, which will be produced by Apple Studios along with iconic entertainer Burnett, Emmy winner Tina Fey, Eric Gurian, Steven Rogers and Josh McLaughlin. Jeff Richmond will executive produce.
In the memoir, described as “a touching tribute to her eldest daughter,” Burnett tells the story of Hamilton, who won the hearts of everyone she met with her kindness, quirky humor and unconventional approach to life. After overcoming her painful and public teenage struggle with drug addiction in a time when personal troubles were kept private, Hamilton lived her adult life of sobriety to the fullest, achieving happiness and success as an actress, writer, musician and director before losing a hard-fought battle with...

A record-breaking number of women are directing and writing films; Tara Miele among them with her cerebral drama “Wander Darkly,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Lionsgate is giving the film a strong awards push and will submit Diego Luna for awards consideration in the best supporting actor category. His co-star Sienna Miller will be submitted for best actress.

“No Time to Die” was just the first domino to fall. When the 25th James Bond movie moved from its release in November and prompted Cineworld to announce the “temporary suspension” of over 600 locations in the U.S. and the U.K., it begged the question, just which films are still slated to open in theaters in 2020?
Honestly, not a ton, and the goalposts are moving so quickly that TheWrap just reported the sci-fi epic “Dune” from Warner Bros. would also no longer open on December 18 as planned.

A formidable pairing, Sienna Miller and Diego Luna lead the new drama Wander Darkly. Directed and written by Tara Miele, the film follows their relationship after a traumatic accident. Following a world premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Lionsgate picked it up for a release this December, with an awards push for Miller, and now the first trailer has landed.
Dan Mecca said in our review, “There is a wonderful idea that fuels Wander Darkly, written and directed by Tara Miele. How do we reckon with tragedy? What goes on in our head while we process a life-altering event? This Sundance premiere attempts to convey this visually, relying heavily on the actors on hand to carry the weight. Unfortunately, Miele’s reach exceeds her grasp in trying to examine these elements, resulting in a muddled thriller that gets confusing before it becomes obvious.”
