Jaws (1975)
5/10
Small town politics that doesn't hold the test of time
28 October 2023
Jaws is an iconic film that spawned a movie franchise and influenced countless water creature suspense films, even several theme park attractions. Jaws was celebrated for its cinematic style and score, but it also inadvertently endangered the life of sharks around the world after approximately 50% of sharks in western waters were hunted out of fear and hype because of this film.

I have not drank the Spielberg koolaid and do not believe all things Spielberg are exceptional pieces of cinematic history. The first half of Jaws is more about male egos and the ability to be an irritating politician, the typical overproduced storyline. However, the second half of the film outshines the first half, but it's not without its Richard Dreyfus irritating onscreen acting style. This is great for 1975 realism, but for 2023 this original film fails to entertain me.

The Witches Are Back...
8 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
...witch, witch.. the witches are back! Fantastic sequel to the original. This film does not disappoint the viewer if they are not predisposed to only liking the original film for its sake of nostalgia. This film is fun for all ages, and it doesn't require a person to overthink the spookiness and family entertainment of the Halloween holiday.

In this film the three Sanderson sisters are brought back to life in 2022 (aka 30 years later than Hocus Pocus {original}. The sisters meet two teenage girls who take the Sanderson sisters on a wild goose chase to thwart the sisters from capturing and inhaling the essence of children's souls. Billy returns as the undead mummy, and while Zachary Binks joined his sister in the afterlife in the first movie, another black cat joins the film and after the credit rolls this cat shows us the location of the second Black Flame candle leading us to believe a third Hocus Pocus film could be in the making.

Brilliant, but a misunderstood film
16 April 2023
This is a film inspired by true events and is not a documentary to many people's dismay. Most people have the wrong expectations about the style of this film and give it a bad review. I accepted the filmmakers choice to use non-twins for this film. Telling a story like this with this type of artistic creativity could be confusing for people that can't tell twins apart. What this film does bring to the viewer is highlights of some of the bigger moments in the twins lives while occasionally using some art and claymation to emphasize parts of the story being told, and I accepted the use of claymation as a dramatic effect that could resemble the imaginations of the twins, and the inspiration for the music and scoring was quite acceptable and appropriately sets the tone for your emotions. I did think the acting was very good, and when they were silent they easily were able to covey the right expressions to keep me engaged and aware of each twin's reactions and emotions.

The shape of disappointment
10 March 2023
I have to admit I'm not a fan of del Toro's movies. His movies are often visual appealing, but his stories are odd and often too fantastical for my liking. I just don't understand why this is got an Oscar. The Hellboy movies are just awful, Pan's Labyrinth was weird, and The Shape of Water is to slow and too long to tell a love story of a woman falling in love with an Amazonian fish-man creature in captivity. The cinematography is great and the scoring is likable, but the story ruined the movie for me. None of the cast was memorable enough for me to take notice of their performance. The only del Toro movies he contributed too I can tolerate are the Hobbit series, and those weren't original or new storylines but an adaption of someone else's work.

Lost in Space (2018–2021)

A Parker Posey delight for her fans
27 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Lost in Space is the story of the Robinson family making a journey from earth to a distant plant who encounters an alien robot species programmed to kill with one exception being a broken robot that was damaged and found by the youngest Robinson, Will Robinson. Season 1 was extremely promising with top-notch CGI. In fact, the CGI made the choppy story line and gaping plot holes almost acceptable. I also had to remind myself this was a family oriented program and had to ignore the overflowing family issues the Robinsons were always arguing about amongst each other. At times I thought Maureen and John Robinson needed therapy to stop being so overbearing and pretentious towards their children and almost everyone they meet.

Because of the long gap before making the third season (due to the COVID pandemic), it was obvious the third season was going to be the shows final season. The third season was also only 8 episodes and not the usual 10. This also made the storyline feel rushed and choppy, and this forced viewers to endure obvious gaps and glaring oversights in the storyline.

Writing aside, the acting was excellent with Parker Posey being the true star of the cast, followed closely by Maxwell Jenkins (aka Will Robinson). While Parker Posey's character, Dr. Smith, was not not the leading role in Lost In Space, her acting skills shined!! She was the real reason I watched the final season.

While complaints about storyline holes abound, the acting and CGI along with the mechanical emotions of Will Robinson's Robot are truly worth 9 of 10 stars.

Interesting storyline but too slow to enjoy
21 November 2022
The first episode was slow but had a strong ending. Both JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek are great dramatic actors, but the second episode dragged on so much I couldn't finish the episode. I need 600 characters to add this review, so I guess I'll complain some more.

The fact the writers and/or director wanted JK Simmons to be a dumb main character has ruined the show for me. However, his acting is on par a forgetful old man that acts scared and nervous all the time. But, I was equally irritated with both main characters slowness that I couldn't sit still any longer and felt I was growing cobwebs waiting for more of the storyline to increase. Additional character introduction and development also took far too long. Every single scene's suspenseful moments in the first two episodes was related to a senior citizen being forgetful or needing assistance to get up. UGH!!!

Couldn't stop laughing at 11 min 20 second
7 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first 10 minutes are creepy, but then it happens... the man vomits. Now you're probably asking why is that funny, well it's so poorly shot and the acting is so bad you could tell liquid was spraying from a hose. I just couldn't bring myself to watch any more of this one when I was done watching the scene for a second time and laughing even harder.

Finch (2021)

A pleasing story with a feel good ending.
4 August 2022
Finch is more proof that Tom Hanks is a great actor and makes good movies. This is a dramatic story of a man a dog on a journey to San Francisco during a post apocalyptic future with the companionship of a self-aware robot. While the movie's setting is not unique and slightly predictable, Tim Hank's ability to make the viewer feel so comfortable with the main character you can't help but feel his emotional ups and downs. It wasn't until the end that I realized it was a 2 hour movie.

I'm surprised that so many reviewers expect blockbusters from every movie with a big named actor. These same people are over-saturated by comic action films they failed to see the beauty in the story itself and expected 2 full hours of action.

Great cinematography for an action film
14 December 2021
This movie doesn't have an identifiable story I'd you did not see the original 1979 film, and had I not seen the original film I wouldn't have continued watching past the first 25 minutes. However, I can see why many fans of this film rave over the nonstop action and "excellent cinematography". Action scenes are abundant and dialog is minimal, but I just couldn't take 2 hours of retro futuristic action. Also, I prefer Charlize Theron in non-action roles.

Story took long to start and I lost interest
5 December 2021
The trailer gives much of this movie's plot away, but I was still interested in seeing this movie. However, I was so unimpressed with the character development of Rachel (played by Caren Pistorius) that I lost enough interest 20 minutes into the movie and turned it off before the action even started.

Greatest American Zero
30 September 2021
Saw this had popped up on Crackle, so I decided to revisit a distant childhood memory.

The consensus that this show was poorly marketed by ABC is valid, but I think the shows premise was poorly executed. This show would have been a medium success if they didn't have two things: "comical" flying scenes & extra cheesy original pop-style songs (even in the early 80s this music stunk). These two things automatically forced it into a "kiddies" genre when ratings revealed grown men didn't want to watch corny action heroes. What I can't tell is if this was a Superman parody or the effects of an exec at ABC with a grudge.

The shows not really terrible, and it had typical 80s action stories and writing, and the production value wasn't too bad. I'm surprised by the good quality of the spaceship scenes. I think the ship was great for any 80s TV show. The acting is good, but I feel the actors were hampered by the shows premise of being corny. However, I'm willing to forgive the shows corny moments just for this trip down memory lane.

The truth is told in this film
22 April 2021
Provocative. Surreal. Truthful.

This film showcases bullying in various forms, and it can even be in the home because of simple ignorance. A persons feelings and general respect should never be a joke. This film highlights the lack of American conversation about bullying and cruelty. Adults are often to blame for their children's behavior, not because they encourage this bad and sad behavior, because they don't condone it and then dismiss the severity of the actions altogether. Education should not be left to the school systems alone, education starts in the home and children learn by example. Be a positive role model to everyone you meet, give a helping hand and stand up to violence, raise your voice in protest to hatred!! I gave this only a 9 star review because the mother should never have given her husband and son a pass for their behavior, and I personally feel her unspoken naivety is no better than the bullying itself. The damage that people inflict on other people through words is just as offending as physical abuse. Had this short film expanded on the outcome of the family's dynamic and the the brother's future behavior after the tragedy and how it changes everything could have easily made this full-length feature film.

Electric Dreams (2017– )
5/10
Similar to Black Mirror
12 April 2021
Just like Black Mirror was exciting with completely new futuristic ideas in the beginning episodes and then failed to continually deliver its impressive and provocative stories, Electric Dreams also started strong then fizzled by the middle of the first season. The background soundtracking in many episodes is so repetitive that it's like nails on a chalkboard. The music In the season one finale of Electric Dreams is so bad I stopped watching 10 minutes before it ended, and I don't care what happened.

It seems many of these futuristic shows with technology that's harmful or goes wrong just can't keep the ideas fresh nor interesting.

Frasier: Something About Dr. Mary (2000)
Season 7, Episode 16

This one will offend the cancel culturists
18 March 2021
(Reviewed in March 2021) Like this review and future reviews that will follow, this episode will probably be shelved from syndication and removed from future DVD releases for being racially and culturally insensitive to the modern viewer. When Frasier gives his black girl impression of Dr. Mary, many will consider this behavior to be borderline racially stereotyped by the white writers and white actors (Kelsey Grammar). Without me being insensitive to the race card, Frasier's black girl impersonation in this episode is no different than his over the top impersonations of Italians, Greeks, Jews, all other ethnicities, and furthermore the people of various sexual preferences/identities. Frasier will always exaggerate his imitations of other people who overshadow Frasier's image of himself, and that's what makes Frasier fussy and funny.

Black comedies have lost their comedic sense of worth
9 March 2021
Let's be honest, Coming To America was funny because black comedies back then where all about being stereotypical and making fun of the ghetto for the sole reason of making you laugh, and this had none of that comedy gold. Coming 2 America felt bland and did not have anything overly ridiculous that would make you laugh. Eddie Murphy let white people (aka Netflix) strip the script of anything that would be considered "racist" or "edgy". This movie clearly defines the carefully cautious mindeset the US is trying to become, and for this reason alone this movie lost its comedic value. I only gave it a 7 because I was glad to see so many of the original actors from the first movie, and because I overly enjoyed En Vogue with Salt N Peppa.

11 February 2021
My roommates 3 year old likes it, but the episodes are too short, and with only 12 episodes I got tired of having to rewatch them again every hour. What I don't get is why the garbage truck can't talk if the animals can talk. I despise kids shows that have grunting and moaning characters without dialogue.

From fantastic in season 1 to dreadfully boring in season 5
3 February 2021
This was a great series until season 4, and then I felt the series lost the ability to find new and provocative material and completely slid downhill. Season 5 was very hum-drum and could have easily been a run of the mill YouTube show. Striking Vipers completely failed to impress me, and I felt a closeted bisexual male fighting his bromance urges wrote the storyline. I miss the shock and awe of the first couple seasons that made made me like the difference it was from other futuristic, sci-fi shows. Also, when does three episodes make a complete season?!

Great 80's campy John Hughes movie
27 January 2021
"Hey, Gary? BTW, why are we wearing bras on our heads?" "Ceremonial." She's alive, ALIVE!! This movie is not going to impress any teen boy born after 1990, but it is definitely fun nostalgia for teen boys of the 80's, and it stars the hot Kelly Lebrock!! I saw at the theater with my friends and had a blast. It's silly, over-the-top humor that is meant to entertain without any effort. For those who discredit this movie, they obviously didn't grow up in a suburban square state town hanging out at the mall eating candy, drinking too much soda, and playing at an arcade wishing the girls would just talk to them. This movie is full of one-liners, and I wish these types of movies would get a 4K remaster. I watch it about twice a year just for sh-ts and giggles.

Easy watching, chick flick for Millennials who always shame others
27 January 2021
When I first started watching this movie I couldn't help but think of this as being a watered-down version of The Devil Wears Prada: an uptight boss, a fish out of place employee who saves the day, and a go-to right hand man. It has a light hearted feel with all the hot-button topics of 2019, but unlike many of the reviewers here I didn't catch the similarities of The Ellen Show scandal, partly due to my lack of interest in Ellen DeGeneres's talk show. Mindy Kaling is her typical comedic self and funny, and Emma Watson was also fun to watch. I thought it was an overall heart warming chick flick that was easy to watch, only because I didn't put any effort into making any real life comparison. While there might have been some coincidences with the timing of the release, It's a shame so many people have to compare everything they watch with real life drama then complain it doesn't stand up to the actual mess they hoped it would reveal. At the end, I did feel that it was very millennial to the point of mistake-shaming, but it does get old thinking anyone who makes a mistake should be hung on a public cross for everyone to point at and make snide judgment. Just remember, you overly sensitive Millennials, glass houses are easy to crack and shatter and one day your kid's generation will highly disapprove of your actions too. (Jan 2021)

Season 3 - the disaster
23 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Julia Garner is the best actress of the show, and her character Ruth keeps me watching. Laura Linney, Lisa Emery, and Janet McTeer are exceptional actresses as well, and I love the characters they play. Bateman's bland facial expressions, all the time, reduce his character to a flat existence which could easily be written out of the script for season 4 and wouldn't be missed by many viewers. However, the character Ben Davis poorly played by Tom Pelphry is just enough to ruin the show for many viewers, including me, who didn't believe his portrayal of bipolar disorder to be real. For some viewers Ben Davis ruined the show for them, but having him off-d was the seasons saving grace. I don't understand the praise Pelphry gets for his acting. I have several family members with BP and they don't walk around trying to fix their mistakes to such extremes, or smack themselves in the face and cry while yelling 'stupid stupid stupid' when they do more damage to their situation. I'm sure some mentally ill people might do this, but this was just typical Hollywood's version of making an ill person look more ill for the sake of drama and discord onscreen. Mental illness manifests itself in many different ways, but don't believe the hype Hollywood forces everyone to believe. Thank goodness this is pure fiction.

I wanted more of the story
17 January 2021
Kristen Stewart is amazing in this role as Jean Seberg. The supporting cast was also equally good. While the film brushes over the entire story, I longed for more detail. This film could have easily been a mini series of six to eight episodes with each episode highlighting a key chapter of the story while including other topics related to the time at hand. I do feel this film was made to only highlight part of the racial divide topic for a smaller, closed-minded audience that didn't want to hear the entire story.

Doesn't hold up well for me after 20 years
15 January 2021
In my early 20s I thought this show was about neurotic old 30/40 year olds who were just losers in life so I never tuned in, but that's exactly what it was meant to be. In my 30s I gave it a second shot and found it funnier, but after binging this show again during the pandemic I am shocked to see how offensive the underlying topic(s) really was. They find a way to make each offense topic so over-the-top is so absurd you can't help but to chuckle uncomfortably to yourself, but saying things like "it's ok if you are" or "I have nothing against it personally" doesn't make the aforementioned joke(s) acceptable.

I saw Jerry Seinfeld doing stand up in Chicago several years ago and I wished Banyan was the comic instead of Jerry. His live act was no different than the pre-show monologue at the beginning of his tv show; unfortunately, there wasn't a supporting comedian to make him funny. Both Jerry and Larry David have become so rich they don't care if they bomb or actually tell a funny joke.

Underrated film
12 January 2021
I absolutely love this film, and it definitely gets me in the feels. It's a great story as has good life lessons. According to many reviewers this is a forgettable Pixar film because its didn't live up to Pixar's best money makers, and I completely disagree. This is perfect family film for snuggly couch time!

My 3 year old didn't think this was Interesting, but when the train in the first ep was out of control she said something about twerking to the pigs, so I immediately turned off the show. SHAME ON YOU, NETFLIX!! As with many shows, this show doesn't have its lack of main characters making bad choices and almost ruining everything before the others save them. Ugh!!
