The Thirty Years' War 1618-1648 was an international conflict taking place in northern Europe from 1618 to 1648. The war was fought between Catholics and Protestants and also drew in the national armies of France, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, and the Habsburg dynasty that ruled the Holy Roman Empire. History: castrato were male soprano or contralto voice of great range, flexibility, and power, produced as a result of castration before puberty. The castrato voice was introduced in the 1500's, when women were banned from church choirs and the stage. It reached its greatest prominence in 17th- and 18th-century opera (1600's-1700's).

The practice of castration, illegal and inhumane, produced an adult voice of extraordinary power attributable to the greater lung capacity and physical bulk of the adult male. The unique tone quality of the voice, coupled with the ability of the intensively trained singers to execute extremely difficult florid vocal passages, made the castrati the rage of opera audiences and contributed to the spread of Italian opera. In 18th-century opera the majority of male singers were castrati. The most famous of the Italian castrati was Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli.

1667 - 1670 Near Paris France. VIOLENT in parts but also wildly beautiful and quite funny. King Louis XIV (16th) of France tries to quash the plotting nobility by trapping them in with him at a new palace (Versailles) where he could control everything through rigid rules, rituals and spying. Same actor who played gorgeous young Athelstan in Vikings! This is a really sexy, gorgeous, wonderful show! (Except for the torture scenes, yuck).

1650-1685 England, Charles ll, A very cool king, who loved his mistresses...all of them. A man who brought a lot of joy after the Cromwell years. History: In 1650, Charles made a deal with the Scots and was proclaimed king but was defeated by Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. He escaped into exile until 1660 when he was invited to England to reclaim his throne. Those who had signed Charles I's death warrant were punished. However, the new king pursued a policy of political tolerance and power-sharing. He made a number of attempts to formalize toleration of Catholics and Non-conformists but was forced to back down in the face of a hostile parliament. Charles loved and respected women, socializing with them, falling in love with them, and seeking political advice from them. He commissioned paintings of them which he proudly displayed in the palace. He had no children with his wife, Catherine of Braganza but had a number of illegitimate children with mistresses. He was generous in providing for all his children and was kind to his wife who had several miscarriages. He refused to divorce her even though his advisers begged him to do so for the sake of a legitimate heir. Rufus Sewell is so beautiful....sigh....

1520-1566 Ottoman-Turkish empire. Sultan Suleiman and the woman who climbed to power becoming his wife. (((This was written with limited insight into women's interpersonal lives))). However, it's surprisingly intriguing. Visually stunning with great costuming. History: The name means "man of peace". He was a beloved and successful ruler. He was a distinguished poet and goldsmith; he also became a great patron of culture, overseeing the "Golden" age of the Ottoman Empire. Breaking with Ottoman tradition, Suleiman fell madly in love with, then married Hurrem Sultan, a slave woman from his harem who had been captured in Turkish raids on the coast of Russia. Harems were not a place for feminism but if you watch a history of them it seems some women gained tremendous power but ultimately were subject to the whims of men and custom. 1781 and 1801 Cornwall England, a county on England’s rugged south West tip. It forms a peninsula of wild moorland with hundreds of sandy beaches. Magical! Wonderfully romantic, great story, scenery and costumes.

HISTORY: Much of the landscape of Cornwall was transformed in the 1700's and early 1800's due to the rapid growth of copper and tin mining. Cornwall’s tin and copper mines were some of the largest in Europe. By the mid-19th century however, much had changed. The rise of the mechanised cloth industry in England’s North and Midlands sent the south-western wool trade into serious decline. And while Cornwall’s mining industry survived well into the 20th century, it experienced repeated crises from the 1770s onwards. This was primarily due to newly discovered tin and copper mines elsewhere in the world. With the ending of the War with France, Great Britain entered a period of greater economic depression and political uncertainty, characterized by social discontent and unrest.

1830-1840 Victorian industrial era England Coming of age in the workhouses of the Victorian era. Historic fiction based on the lives of the girls of the cotton mill. Amazing acting, great story line. History: Industrial Revolution cotton mills: because of the major boom in production, there was a need for cheap labor. Due to rampant poverty, women and children were forced to enter the workforce, and they could be paid less than men. Women were paid a third of what men were paid, and children either made a tenth of what men were paid, or they worked only for room and board. New technology allowed farmers to work the land with less labor. This led to severe unemployment and rising poverty in rural areas. As a result, many people left the countryside to find work in towns and cities. Cotton mills were a huge industry. The work was dangerous. The machines could cause dismemberment and cotton particles caused fatal ‘cotton lung’. Children were exploited as cheap sources of labour which brought about years of child slavery.

ONE EPISODE: SEASON 5, EPISODE 17 'NUMBER 12 LOOKS JUST LIKE YOU' This 1964 classic episode of 'the Twilight Zone', takes on the value of inner vs outer beauty, body shaming and conformity, with an (all too creepy) conclusion. Even though this was filmed before boob jobs and facial fillers it predicted the trajectory of a culture consumed with superficial beauty. Our plastic surgery society has made this glimpse into nightmare, a reality. Every woman should watch this episode of..."The Twilight Zone!".
