At 29 years old, Quentin Tarantino made his directorial debut with "Reservoir Dogs." With its punchy pacing and electric performances, it was a brash, violent film that put him on the map as an audacious new storyteller. From his humble beginnings as a Video Archives store clerk to the script landing in Harvey Keitel's hands, Tarantino was able to raise $1.5 million to make the movie and debut it at the Sundance Film Festival.
Duane Byrge from The Hollywood Reporter covered the overwhelming audience response to the searing film: "[T]his plug gutter is wiping out audiences here at the Sundance Film Festival. Those who survive it emerge in a shell-shocked euphoria — so good and so blunt is the writing." Miramax won the subsequent bidding war, but although distribution was secured, the road to release was rocky. It has been 45 years since the first Mad Max dropped, and thanks to George Miller, the franchise is still going strong. With Furiosa earning rave early reviews, which serves as a prequel to the last Mad Max entry Fury Road, the Aussie filmmaker opened up about the evolution of technology over the course of the franchise.
From using celluloid analog back in the day to craft The Road Warrior to shifting to digital for the modern installments in the series, there has been a huge leap in technology over the years. And for Furiosa, Miller opened up about getting inspired by Oscar-winner Bong Joon-ho’s technique.

The Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, with plenty of films making a splash on the starry Croisette on the French Riviera. However, one studio executive tells Variety, “There aren’t many Oscar-buzzy titles to be excited about, not even in the international feature space.”
This year’s main competition jury, led by president Greta Gerwig and including J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nadine Labaki and Omar Sy, will name its winners on Saturday.
It was looking like a foregone conclusion that the Palme d’Or win would be bestowed upon Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón, which was picked up by Netflix. However, on Friday, Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” garnered the most enthusiastic reactions on social media from attendees and the longest-standing ovation at 12 minutes. If you think the housing crisis is bad in the UK and US, you should check out Seoul, where 6% of households are unable to find accommodation at all and others are paying through the nose for tiny jjokbangs, or ‘piece rooms’ – illegal partitions within other people’s homes or business premises, often with no cooking facilities or basic sanitation. Several films have already been made about this, from Jeon Go-woon’s coruscating drama Microhabitat to Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning black comedy Parasite. Yoon Eun-kyung’s début work, which screened as part of Fantaspoa 2024, is something a little more out of left field.

It's no secret that the South Korean TV industry is conquering the world step by step. But there's no wonder why K-dramas are so popular. Showrunners have put a lot of thought and effort into creating a series of different genres that can be enjoyed by different audiences.
However, not only shows are getting more and more attention, but also full-length movies. Especially after the huge success of the movie Parasite. The 99%-rated movie even won the Oscar for Best Picture.
So here are some more movies you should definitely check out if you liked Bong Joon-ho's masterpiece.
1. Love and Leashes (2022)
Rotten Tomatoes: 89%
There are some topics that are not often explored in movies, and Bdsm is one of them, although it has become a bit more common in recent years. Well, Love and Lashes is actually a romantic comedy that explores the kink in the sweetest and absolutely not cringeworthy way.

Chicago – Opening Night at the 2024 Chicago Critics Film Festival (Ccff) on May 3rd will include the last film of popular South Korean (Sk) Actor Lee Sun-kyun, entitled “Sleep” (click here for tickets) The world was rocked on December 27th, 2023, when the report came through that that actor – who had a prominent role in the 2019 Oscar Best Picture “Parasite’ – had died at age 48 from an apparent suicide in Seoul (Sk), months after his appearance in Chicago during the Asian Pop-Up Cinema.
“Sleep” follows newlyweds Hyun-su (Lee Sun-kyun) and Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi), whose domestic bliss is disrupted when Hyun-su begins speaking in his sleep, ominously stating, “someone’s inside.” From that night on, whenever he falls asleep, Hyun-su transforms into someone else, with no recollection of what happened the night before. Overwhelmed with anxiety that he may hurt himself or their young family, Soo-jin can barely sleep because of this irrational fear.

"The ghost haunts your husband, but you brought him in." Curzon Films has revealed an official trailer for the Korean horror thriller film titled Sleep, an indie creation from filmmaker Jason Yu. This is his feature directorial debut after working as an assistant director for Bong Joon-ho on Okja and other films. It first premiered at last year's Critics Week sidebar at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it earned rave reviews. "When he sleeps, someone awakes..." A pregnant wife who becomes worried about her husband’s sleeping habits. What starts out as some light sleep-talking soon escalates to unexpectedly grotesque behaviour. They consult a sleep clinic without success and as his nightmarish behaviour escalates, they desperately seek help from a shaman. Sleep stars Jung Yu-mi as Soo-jin and Lee Sun-kyun as Hyeon-soo, with Kim Gook-hee. This film is super scary! It's quietly unsettling horror that will get under your skin...

Duris stars as a father protecting his son, who may or may not be mutating, in Thomas Cailley’s well-crafted thriller
Thomas Cailley’s sci-fi fantasy has too much sensitivity and good taste to be the proper horror-thriller or creature feature that it almost resembles. It’s a drama of emotions and ideas about post-Covid society – which is welcome enough – but with a dash of prosthetics and CGI and some scares. I felt something very similar about Bong Joon-ho’s monster film The Host back in 2006: the worthiness operates against the excitement and I found myself wanting something more gleefully crass and shocking, something more ironic or thrillingly callous. The Animal Kingdom seems squeamish about going for the jugular in the way a proper genre movie would – or a Marvel movie.
The scene is a France of the near future in which there has been an outbreak of some...

Barking Dogs Never Bite
Slamdance Film Festival has announced it is going to move to Los Angeles from Utah in 2025.
The festival, which started off on the fringes of Sundance Film Festival in 1995, has since grown to a force to be reckoned with in its own right, with films getting their break there including Christopher Nolan's Following, Bong Joon-ho's Barking Dogs Never Bite and Matt Johnson's The Dirties.
It has traditionally run alongside Sundance in Park City, Utah, this year noticeably taking on a much more central and larger venue for its screenings. The switch saw an 18% rise in ticket sales. The festival said in a statement that the LA move will "allow it to expand its mission of supporting truly independent filmmakers" while giving better accessibility to attendees.
Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter Founder and president of the festival Peter Baxter said: “Slamdance is coming to Los Angeles!

Looks like it’s not just Sundance that could be on the move. The Slamdance Film Festival, the smaller, independent stepsister festival to Sundance, has announced it will be leaving its long-time home of Park City, Utah and will relocate to Los Angeles beginning in 2025.
Next year’s Slamdance, which enters its 30th year after being founded in 1995, will take place in Los Angeles’ West Hollywood neighborhood at the Landmark Theatres Sunset and the DGA Theater Complex. The festival also traditionally runs in late January, generally around the same time as Sundance, but will now be scheduled for February 20-26, 2025.
Slamdance believes being in LA will offer the festival to continue to grow, and it shouldn’t hurt to be out of Sundance’s shadow.

South Korean cinema continues to be a thriller forerunner in many genres, especially horror, and the new horror thriller, “Sleep,” seems to be continuing the tradition. The film is the feature-length directorial debut of Jason Yu, a second unit director on Bong Joon-Ho’s sci-fi-ish thriller “Okja.” The connections to Joon-Ho don’t end there either, as “Parasite” star Lee Sun-Kyun is among the cast members.

U.K. outfit Curzon — part of the Cohen Media Group — is set to relaunch Artificial Eye, the arthouse distribution label that was established in 1976 and has been on hiatus for the last decade.
The label, first founded by film enthusiasts Andi and Pam Engel and part of the Curzon group since 2006, became renowned for releasing independent, foreign-language and arthouse title to U.K. audiences, including those by Béla Tarr, the Dardenne Brothers and Trần Anh Hùng. Its library boasts over 400 critically acclaimed films from directors including Wim Wenders, Michael Haneke and Claire Denis. Ruben Östlund’s “Force Majeure” was one of the last films released under the previous incarnation.
Led by managing director Louisa Dent, who has been with the company since 2008, Curzon has continued to release critically acclaimed films under the Curzon Film label — including Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” the highest-grossing foreign-language film ever at the U.K.

Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
As part of the “Climate Reality Check,” just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now a more extensive study published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment has analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022 under the same criteria.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.

It’s no wonder the notion of sleep is such fertile ground for a horror story – the more you think about it, the freakier it gets. What really happens when we drop off for the night? Where does our consciousness take us? And what’s in control of our bodies through that time? Those are all questions at play in Sleep, the upcoming Korean horror from writer-director Jason Yu, longtime collaborator of Bong Joon-Ho, in which a couple experience a different kind of night terror. It’s not exactly that something is wrong in their home – it’s that, whenever husband Hyun-soo falls asleep, he exhibits increasingly strange and dangerous behaviour, causing much consternation for his pregnant wife Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi). Is Hyun-soo simply unwell? Or possessed? Or something worse? Watch the trailer here:

These days, many fans know Mark Ruffalo for two major reasons. First is his portrayal of the mighty green Avenger, The Hulk, and second is hilariously giving away major plot points from whatever movie he stars in. However, his fanbase extends beyond the realm of gamma radiation and super strength.

In the run-up to its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola’s 135-minute epic “Megalopolis” is on track to sell to a French distributor, Le Pacte.
The indie company, presided over by veteran French distributor Jean Labadie, is currently negotiating a deal. It seems like an odd match for such a pricey movie considering Le Pacte’s fairly modest size. Although the company has had recent hits, including Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Maiwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” it may not be able to splurge on P&a. Coppola’s lawyer Barry Hirsch, who also served as a producer, has been courting studios and streamers to secure a splashy deal with a P&a commitment amounting to more than half of the film’s $120 million budget, according to industry insiders. Here’s what we know about Longlegs so far. It’s coming in July of 2024, it’s directed by Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter), and it features Maika Monroe (It Follows) as an FBI agent who discovers a personal connection between her and a serial killer who has ties to the occult. We know that the serial killer is going to be played by none other than Nicolas Cage and that the marketing has been nothing short of cryptic excellence up to this point.
At the very least, we can assume Neon’s upcoming film is going to be a dark, horror-fueled hunt for a serial killer. With that in mind, let’s take a look at five disturbing serial killers-versus-law-enforcement stories to get us even more jacked up for Longlegs.

With Dune: Part Two and Civil War in theaters, it’s already been a great year for sci-fi, and that doesn’t even count goofball flicks like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, or any other movies with the word “empire” in the title. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pulled from the release schedule and there’s no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release this year. But overall, 2024 has been a strong start for sci-fi movies.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, German maestro filmmaker Werner Herzog discussed his plans to lead the 3rd Film Accelerator program organized by Barcelona-based La Selva. Herzog and his long-time cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger will be on hand to guide the 25 directing and 25 cinematography aspirants who will pair up to create short films no longer than 10 mins in length.
On day one, he will give them a framework on which to base their project. “They’re not to come with a pre-formulated plan for their projects,” said Herzog, who revealed that he was lending his voice to “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming hand-drawn animated feature about deep-sea creatures.
This would not be the first time for Herzog, who has lent his distinguished gravelly voice to many other parts in the past, most notably in episodes of “The Simpsons,” “The Boondocks” as well as Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty” and “Metalocalypse.

Perspective is one of the building blocks of cinema. It’s often thought of as a visual tool, but it doesn’t stop there. The audience is forfeiting both their visual and auditory senses and it’s the filmmakers’ job to take them on a journey using both images and sound.
In sound world, we aren’t simply creating the literal reality of where a character is currently located; we’re using sound to give a sense of the emotional situation using the naturalistic elements of that location. It’s the process of creating an experience wherein the audience steps into the subjectivity of a character—and to create that, it isn’t always as simple as “see a dog, hear a dog.” The cut is what the audience sees and the sonic-perspective is what they feel.
Case in point: take a stressful scene, one where our hero screams out loud from angst and frustration.
