The film combines stand-up performances and talking head interviews, as well as archival materials featuring LGBTQ+ comedians, and includes Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Wanda Sykes, Suzy Izzard, Hannah Gadsby, Tig Notaro, Rosie O’Donnell, Margaret Cho, Bob The Drag Queen and Trixie Mattel.
Historians interviewed for the documentary include Dave Holmes, Roger Mason, Shar Jossell, Susan Stryker and Kate Aurthur, Variety‘s Editor-at-Large.

Dave Holmes, the ex-manager of the British rock band Coldplay, has sued the band for £10 million ($12.3 million) he believes he is contractually owed for two unreleased Coldplay albums.
Holmes left as Coldplay’s band manager in August 2022 after working with them for 22 years.
The band is currently being managed by Phil Harvey, Mandi Frost and Arlene Moon, who have worked with Holmes and the band previously.
Holmes filed a claim to the High Court of Justice, alleging that the band had backed out on a promised contract for their tenth and eleventh albums. It was agreed in the contract that the manager would be paid a commission.
Additionally, Holmes declared that the band had attempted to demote him from manager to head of touring.
In response, the band members, Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion, filed a counterclaim in the High Court, which declared that Holmes had...

Chris Martin and Coldplay are being taken to court by the former manager.
According to a report in Variety, Coldplay ended its 22-year association with longtime manager Dave Holmes approximately 12 months ago, and are now being managed by a team consisting of Phil Harvey, Mandi Frost and Arlene Moon, who had worked with the band and Holmes for several years.
Variety points to legal documents filed in the U.K. indicating that Holmes is suing the band, with a rep telling the outlet that the lawsuit involves a “contractual dispute.” Because the legal documents had yet to be made public, there was no further information made available.

Say What? Karaoke premiered on MTV in 1998. It was a spinoff of the popular reality show Say What?, where music videos for songs with fast or hard-to-understand lyrics were shown with the lyrics shown on the bottom of the screen.
Regular people, typically college students, would sing karaoke and then receive critiques from the judges. Celebrities like Shia Labeouf and Ashlee Simpson appeared as guest judges, and Say What? Plot: In 1939 Los Angeles, hard-boiled private detective Philip Marlowe (Liam Neeson) is hired by the daughter (Diane Kruger) of a legendary silent star (Jessica Lange) to find a prop man who went missing. Marlowe quickly finds himself embroiled in a case involving drugs, murder, and secrets that the powers-that-be in Hollywood would like kept secret.
Review: With Marlowe, Liam Neeson finds himself stepping into the shoes of perhaps the most iconic film noir hero of all time. Writer Raymond Chandler’s books were big favourites in Tinseltown in the forties, with Dick Powell (Murder My Sweet), Humphrey Bogart (The Big Sleep) and many more playing Philip Marlowe during the peak noir era. In the seventies neo-noir revival years, the character once again became hip, with Robert Mitchum playing an older Marlowe in Farewell My Lovely and a remake of The Big Sleep. Anyone who was a child or teenager in the late-1990s remembers Woodstock ’99; it was one of those presumably life-altering rites of passage that proved you were almost an adult. But much like MTV Spring Break, Woodstock ’99 held a far darker reality only clearly visible after entering adulthood.
Director Garret Price is no slouch at being able to perfectly encapsulate a moment in time, whether that be in the music world (he helmed 2015’s “Janis Joplin: Little Girl Blue”) or a person. Here, the minute the opening guitar riff of Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy” starts playing, a few of the doc’s attributes are immediately evident: If you loved rock of this period you’re in for a treat, and you are definitely gonna feel like you dropped back into 1999.

As the years go by, Dub Trio’s name feels less and less apt. While the group’s early work orbited around reggae, more recent releases have focused on crushing, riff-centric metal. “World of Inconvenience,” the lead single from the group’s new LP, The Shape of Dub to Come, draws on both styles to create a crafty, atmospheric hybrid.
Often instrumental, the group gets a vocal assist here from Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne, whose inimitable bellow perfectly complements the track’s dark, dirge-like feel. Much as the group adds spacey,...

After following Coldplay around with a camera for 20 years, the footage Mat Whitecross carefully compiled of the beloved British band is finally about to have an audience. The documentary film “Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams” will screen for one night only in theaters around the world on Nov. 14, before debuting on Amazon Prime Video on Friday the 16th. (Watch a snippet from the film in the video above.)
“I don’t think those four obviously could possibly have imagined what was going to happen to them,” Whitecross says of the band’s humble beginnings at University College of London, where Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion first met. Some of the earliest pre-Coldplay jams — when the band tried on other names for size, like Starfish — were captured on tape. “I was always filming everyone,” says Whitecross. “Gradually I think they just got used to me being around.

Over the years, I’ve been pretty vocal about how much I adore horror comedies, and considering how challenging the world at large has been over the last few years, it’s truly my favorite subsection of the genre to disappear into as of late. There have been numerous brilliant humorous horror movies over the years, but I thought now would be the perfect time to celebrate 10 films from the modern landscape of genre cinema that have not only been largely under-appreciated by fans, but also do a killer job of finding new ways to merge the funnies with the frights.

Wanna be a memoirist? Dave Holmes is showing how it's done. The former MTV VJ has inked a deal with Crown Archetype to pen his autobiography. Holmes will recount the painful and frequently hilarious story of his adolescence and subsequent career in TV in a memoir tentatively titled Party of One. In 1998, an unknown Holmes became a familiar face to a generation of American teens after placing second to space-case Jesse Camp in MTV's first Wanna Be a VJ contest. With his affable ease in front of the camera and quick wit, Holmes went on to become a fixture

Here's some exciting news from one of Vulture's own: Dave Holmes, TV personality and our “Somewhere in Time” columnist, has signed a deal to write a comic memoir. Set to publish in the spring of 2016, the book is tentatively titled Party of One. Read the full synopsis below. Mazel tov, Dave! Charting Holmes’ painfully hilarious trip through a life lived on the outside, desperately trying to get in — from his youth as the artsy kid in a sportsy family to his time as a closeted gay kid in a conservative Catholic school, through his experience losing the first “Wanna Be A VJ” contest on live television and subsequent career as a big fat grown man at MTV in the eye of the teen pop hurricane, up to his life as a man in his 40s who has finally learned to accept himself, simply because he’s tried everything else — Party...

We’ve been looking back all week at the hugely influential 1994–95 network-television season, which found new shows Friends and ER hobnobbing on the same schedule with Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and The X Files. We’ve counted down the season’s 100 best episodes, presented an oral history of the first season of Party of Five, tested your Friends knowledge with an Sat-style exam, and so much more. But right now we only care about My So-Called Life, and it’s time to listen to its awesome soundtrack again, with your host, Vulture columnist Dave Holmes. In September 1994, Atlantic Records released the soundtrack to ABC’s new teen drama My So-Called Life. What do these 11 songs tell us about the pop-culture landscape of 1994, about adolescence, about the emotional world of this show (which we here at Vulture obviously agree is pretty much perfect)? Let’s put on our coziest flannel and dive in.

It’s day two of our survey of the hugely influential 1994–95 network-television season, during which the likes of newbies Friends, ER, and My So-Called Life hobnobbed with returning future classics like Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and The X-Files. Yesterday we counted down the season’s 100 best episodes and checked back in on the bananas fifth season of Fox’s Beverly Hills, 90210, and we just presented an oral history of the first season of Party of Five; later today, we’ll be revisiting Melrose Place with the help of the show’s writers. Up now: a tour of the season’s new programs through their theme songs, with your host, Vulture columnist Dave Holmes. The 1994–95 network television season was the middle of the end of the TV-theme-song era, as the major networks were squeezing more advertising into each television hour. But if that era had to end, it went out on a...

All this week on Vulture, we’re discussing the hugely influential 1994–95 network television season, with the likes of newbies Friends, ER, and My So-Called Life hobnobbing on the fall schedule with returning future classics such as Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and The X-Files. We just counted down the season’s 100 best episodes. Up now: Vulture columnist Dave Holmes looks back at the hugely popular and entirely bonkers fifth season of the Fox melodrama Beverly Hills, 90210, which saw the departure of Shannen Doherty’s Brenda Walsh and the arrival of Saved by the Bell’s Tiffani Amber Thiessen as manipulative family friend Valerie Malone. He will discuss the show while simultaneously giving a track-by-track assessment of Beverly Hills, 90210: The College Years, a tie-in soundtrack released September 20, 1994.Season five of Beverly Hills, 90210 was a difficult one for the series, but sometimes music can be the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down.

Remember this guy?Jesse Camp shot to fame in 1998 when he auditioned for and won MTV's "Wanna Be a VJ," a reality competition where music lovers vied for a hosting gig on "Total Request Live."His fame was short-lived, however, as he was replaced by Season 2 winner Thalia DaCosta a year later ... and his runner-up, Dave Holmes, ended up being more popular with both fans and the network in the long run.He then fell into obscurity, popping up at a few random events through the years and at the big finale of "Trl" in 2008.But last night, the 34-year-old (yes, he's only 34) returned to the limelight as he hit the red carpet for a "Free the Nipple" fundraiser hosted by Russell Simmons.Sporting shoulder-length hair, a couple scarves, an all-black outfit and brown cowboy boots, he's definitely tamed his look a little ... but proved that he and his rocker style are still alive.

At this month’s inaugural Vulture Festival, one of our biggest events was Pop-Culture Trivia Night, which pitted cast members from Orange Is the New Black against “Team Fox,” a.k.a. actors from the sitcoms New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Hosted by former MTV VJ and Vulture nostalgia columnist Dave Holmes, the trivia smackdown tested the thespians’ wits with games such as “What’s His Name?” (asking the competitors to identify TV characters based on images) and “Lyric Poetry” (where lyrics to popular songs are read like spoken-word poetry). Which team came out on top? Watch and find out!

Normally, I wouldn’t pass along news about Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson, but this one might interest some of you. Following allegations that he used a racial slur, Clarkson is saying he’s been warned by the BBC that any further instances will cost him his job. Seems rather win-win for those of us who are tired of him saying offensive things.
Soap Opera Digest reports that James Scott — who plays E.J. — is leaving Days of Our Lives. Scott already filmed his final appearance but we won’t see E.J.’s exit until the fall.
I’d say I’m going to miss that chest but Days doesn’t feature it very often, anyway.

Happy Easter! Please overeat, hide some eggs and overindulge on chocolate that a strange rabbit broke into your home to leave for you.
Shall we get the Bryan Singer news out of the way first? Singer’s lawyer says they have proof that Singer wasn’t in Hawaii during the times named in the lawsuits, including credit card bills, phone records and shooting schedules.
Meanwhile, the lawyer for the accuser says that he plans to file three more lawsuits in Hawaii against other individuals for taking sexual advantage of his client via the same party circuit that Singer is accused of being a part of. He’ll then be filing other lawsuits in California against more Hollywood insiders. He also announced Egan is taking part in a documentary from Amy Berg about Hollywood sex abuses.

Ever since it's release via IFC Midnight on March 18, 2014, filmmaker Eric England's indie 'body horror' flick Contracted has been burning up DVD and VOD, and we've got first word on the successful feature's inevitable sequel.

"IFC has asked us for a sequel," filmmaker England, whose previously wrote and directed the genre feature Madison County, told us this morning of a potential follow-up to Contracted.
"I told the producers I wasn't interested, because I never envisioned a sequel in the first place, but if I came up with an idea that I felt lived up to or surpassed the first...

Once Upon a Time has cast a Glinda for its Wizard of Oz story arc. TVLine reports that Sunny Mabrey has been picked to play the Good Witch.
Lifetime has announced that Drop Dead Diva will end with the upcoming sixth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. I just hope another show quickly steps in to fill the upcoming Brooke Elliott shortage on TV.
Dave Holmes sings the praises of Brit soap Coronation Street, though a lot of his praise highlights the ways UK soaps trump their U.S. counterparts.
EW reports that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is set to appear on Shameless as Fiona‘s new boss. Judging from Morgan’s roles on Weeds, Supernatural and Watchmen, I’m already starting a deathwatch for his character.
Seth Meyers promises that Stefon will eventually appear on Late Night, saying that Bill Hader wants to bring his Saturday Night Live character to Meyer’s show eventually.

In Contracted a 20-something girl gets what she thinks is an Std after a night of reckless partying… turns out, it’s far worse than anything she could ever have imagined. Writer-director Eric England puts a strange, sexual new twist on the zombie genre, and he’s here to explain how and why!
Dread Central: Ok, so let’s face it… Contracted (review here) isn’t for everybody. How’s reaction to the film been so far?
Eric England: Really positive actually. I am really happy with how they…. I don’t wanna say I am shocked, but I don’t think you go in thinking they are going to love it. It’s been really good.
DC: I would have to say I was shocked, I will use the word, because it's not the kind of movie that is just another viral zombie thing… you really put a unique slant on it.
Dread Central: Ok, so let’s face it… Contracted (review here) isn’t for everybody. How’s reaction to the film been so far?

On November 22nd Eric England's new film Contracted (review) arrived in limited theaters and VOD outlets (including iTunes, Xbox, PlayStation, Amazon Instant Video, GooglePlay, SundanceNow, and more) via IFC Midnight, and we got a chance to speak with the film's star, Najarra Townsend.
Dread Central: Eric told me that you are quite a trooper considering all the makeup and everything you had to go through. Can you tell me a little bit about what that process was like for you, having to sort of do your thing without being able to see?
Najarra Townsend: We luckily had an amazing special effects artist. She just made everything comfortable. I feel like this could have been a disaster for my face, but luckily she was awesome. I just found it to be really fun. I mean, there were challenges that came with it, [but] even the not seeing kind of helped with my character.
