Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” recounts the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue operation, where 12 children and their coach were trapped in Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non cave for 18 days. While working on the score for the film, Benjamin Wallfisch wanted to give the cave where the boys were trapped its own unique sound and character to bring it to life for the audience.
“It was about embracing the place and tuning in with the spirituality of the culture,” Wallfisch told IndieWire Crafts and Animation Editor Bill Desowitz at the Consider This FYC Brunch. “The way in was actually finding a voice for the cave itself. There was a song from the Chiang Rai region itself and our musicologist did a ton of research for us into finding songs from the region. That was the starting point, finding something that really told the story of the place.

The Tham Luang cave rescue, which saw 12 members of a Thai youth soccer team and its 25-year-old coach rescued from a flooded cave after being trapped for 18 days, was destined to become a Hollywood film. The combination of dangerous weather, human ingenuity, and international cooperation was the kind of story that most screenwriters can only dream of coming up with themselves.
Much like the rescue that inspired it, “Thirteen Lives” is a complex work of technical mastery. At IndieWire’s Consider This Brunch, director Ron Howard, editor James D. Wilcox, supervising sound editors Oliver Tarney and Rachael Tate, and composer Benjamin Wallfisch participated in a panel moderated by IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill. They broke down the work that went into the complex shoot, explaining that getting the details of Thai culture right was as important as all the technical specificity of recreating the rescue. Most notably, much of the film is in the Thai language.

“We had to get it right, because it’s their story,” declares sound designer Rachael Tate about portraying the 2018 Thai cave rescue.” For our recent webchat she explains, “The local Thai people spoke a very specific local Thai dialect so we made sure we recorded crowd that lived really near the cave.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Thirteen Lives” is about a group of young soccer players and their coach being rescued from flooded caves in Thailand. It is based on the 2018 real life events which made news around the world. The film is helmed by Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”). It explored the events from the perspective of the rescuers such as John Volanthen (Colin Farrell) and uses a distinct filmmaking style to immerse the viewer in the narrow underwater caves.

Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” is the latest example of the director’s ability to generate riveting cinema from real-world headlines. Like “Apollo 13” and “Frost/Nixon,” it takes a historical event many audience members will have some awareness of — in this case the dramatic rescue of a Thai soccer team trapped in an underwater cave — and brings it to vivid life, creating nail-biting suspense despite the outcome being common knowledge. The key to the film’s effectiveness is its rigorous attention to detail and meticulous sense of research and journalistic accuracy, qualities evident in every craft on display.
In the videos below, supervising sound editors Rachael Tate and Oliver Tarney, re-recording mixer William Miller, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, production designer Molly Hughes, and editor James Wilcox discuss how they preserved the authenticity of the story that inspired “Thirteen Lives” while also using all the tools of drama and cinema — including...

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the second annual Best Sound prize are “Belfast,” “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (31/10) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “West Side Story” (39/10), “No Time to Die” (4/1), “The Power of the Dog” (9/2), and “Belfast” (9/2).
The craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a staggering 86 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work in 57 films. Those responsible for the largest chunks are Andy Nelson and Gary Rydstrom, whose shared bid for “West Side Story” brings their respective individual totals to 22 and 19. Rydstrom has collected seven trophies over the years, including two each for “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1992), “Jurassic Park” (1994), and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and one for...

Updated March 21: “Dune” got two big boosts with Mpse and Cas wins, bolstering its Oscar chances on Sunday. The sci-fi epic took feature effects/foley at the virtual 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards on March 13, and then live-action sound mixing at the 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Updated February 11: The sound Oscar nominees — “Belfast” (Focus Features), “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), “West Side Story” (20th Century/Disney), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix) — provide a range of imaginative soundscapes that connect to the personal stories in fresh ways.
However, the sonic power and complexity of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is going to be hard to beat. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

Ahead of this year’s Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one: Best Sound. The films in contention for this new award are “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Soul,” and “Sound of Metal.” Our current odds indicate that “Sound of Metal” (31/10) will take the prize, followed in order by “Soul” (39/10), “Mank” (9/2), “Greyhound” (9/2), and “News of the World” (9/2).
The individuals included in the current lineup have amassed a total of 34 nominations for their sound work in 30 films. “Sound of Metal” is the only film of the five that does not include any previous Oscar nominees on its sound team. Its first-time contenders are: Jaime Baksht, Nicolas Becker, Philip Bladh, Carlos Cortés and Michelle Couttolenc.
“Sound of Metal” and “Mank” now hold the distinction of being the first films recognized in a sound category with five credited team members each.

For the first time in decades, the Academy has merged sound editing and sound mixing into a single category because of persistent overlap, and this season offers five exemplary nominees: the experimental “Sound of Metal,” “Mank,” and “Soul,” the rugged western soundscape of “News of the World,” and the explosive sounds of World War II battleships in “Greyhound” (the latter two starring Tom Hanks).
But Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” in which Riz Ahmed portrays Ruben, a heavy-metal drummer losing his hearing, is the favorite to win the Oscar for its complexity and detail. Although the film was snubbed at the Mpse Golden Reel Awards, it rebounded to take the Cas sound mixing prize. This is a film about sound because of the way it explores deafness as a way of experiencing sound and vibration. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.

In a stunning upset, Bong Joon Ho’s black comedy “Parasite” almost swept the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday night, making history along the way.
“Parasite” became the first foreign-language film to win best picture. Its victories in the international feature film, director and original screenplay categories were also a first for a South Korean movie. The film only lost in two categories: film editing and production design. Taika Waititi nabbed adapted screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit.”
“Parasite” beat out Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker” — which had led nominations with 11 — Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes’ “1917,” James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” for the top prize.
Meanwhile, Renée Zellweger (“Judy”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”) and Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) continued their...

1917 follows two British soldiers (George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman) as they race against the clock on a mission during World War I. The intensity didn't come only from it appearing to be one continuous shot — the sound also helped build that tension. "It's constantly shifting, but in a very subtle way. Sometimes the intensity would be building over a 10-minute period; other arcs would play out much more quickly," explains supervising sound editor Oliver Tarney, nominated for sound editing alongside Rachael Tate, while the film's sound mixing nom went to Mark ...

In planning the sound design for “1917,” supervising sound editor Oliver Tarney and his team dug into the trenches to follow Schoefield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) on their perilous journey to deliver the letter about the impending German ambush beyond No Man’s Land.
“There were two factors we needed to consider when designing the soundscape,” said Tarney. “The first was how to best help the audience inhabit the same world as Schofield and Blake by only revealing the world as it was revealed to them; the second was the additional level of responsibility that we, along with music [by Oscar-nominated composer Thomas Newman], were tasked with in affecting the overall pacing and dynamics of the film.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was quick to point out on Jan. 13 as the Oscar nominations were announced, that “A record 62 women were nominated, almost one-third of this year’s nominees.” Twenty of those below-the-line nominations were for women and minorities, including Sandy Powell, who secured her 15th nomination for “The Irishman,” and “Jojo Rabbit” costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo, who landed her inaugural Oscar nomination and entered the history books as the first Latina to be nominated in the category.
Rubeo wanted to create a world filled with vibrant colors to reflect the idea that the film was shot from the perspective of a 10-year-old boy. Similarly, when she was re-creating Hitler’s uniform, Rubeo dressed Taika Waititi (who also adapted the screenplay and directed) in baggy riding pants because he was, after all, a figment of the boy’s imagination.

“1917” and “Ford v Ferrari” split the top sound editing prizes Sunday night at the 67th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. “1917” took Dialogue/Adr and “Ford v Ferrari” scored for Effects/Foley. The Elton John musical fantasy, “Rocketman,” earned Musical honors and “Jojo Rabbit” topped Music Underscore.
The other Feature awards went to “Parasite” (Foreign Language), “Toy Story 4” (Animation), and “Echo in the Canyon” (Documentary).
This sets up a competitive sound editing Oscar race between Sam Mendes’ innovative, continuous-shot World War I drama and James Mangold’s thrilling race car biopic. “The absence of visible edits meant it would have been easy to be overwhelmed with sound at times, never being able to cut to a different location to reset,” said Oliver Tarney, supervising sound editor of “1917.” “We worked hard at making sure there were always multiple layers of detail in the work we were doing.

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

There were unique challenges in Sam Mendes’ vision for “1917.” The director wanted the movie to appear as if it were filmed in one continuous take. And that required months of meticulous planning. Mendes says the long prep time and unprecedented demands created an “unusually unified crew.” Here, he pays tribute to some of them.
Roger Deakins, cinematographer
“The choice to shoot in one shot was an emotional choice: How do we link the audience as closely as possible to the life of these two men? We said, ‘Let’s not talk about how to engineer the mechanics of it; in terms of emotion, where would the camera go?’ We had various rigs, and the decision of each was determined by the emotional content of the scene. Much of the filming was outdoors. There is one carefully constructed lighting sequence lit by Roger, in the nighttime town. The town is lit first by flares,...

The biggest sonic challenge with "The Martian" was was to make the sound of an environment that has never actually been heard seem completely natural to the viewer. Fortunately, Oscar-nominated sound editor Oliver Tarney had access to actual field recordings from Nasa and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Jpl) for the sounds of Mars, Pathfinder, and the Rover. Then, in keeping with the epic and intimate survival story, the sound team intricately balanced dialogue and effects, paying close attention to Matt Damon's breathing as astronaut/botanist Mark Watney. "As the film is set in the near future, we wanted to avoid a conventional sci-fi sound, and instead use an array of sounds that would be familiar to the audience," explained Tarney, who collaborated with nominated mixers Paul Massey, Mark Taylor, and Mac Ruth. "This is also primarily a drama but there is still a huge amount of humor and positivity throughout the.

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.
