Washington, Aug 24 (Ians) From Vice President Kamala Harris to Ambassador Eric Garcetti, top American leaders congratulated India for the historic touchdown of Chandrayaan-3 on the southern polar region of the moon, calling it an ‘incredible feat’.
“Congratulations to India for the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the southern polar region of the moon,” Indian-American Kamala Harris wrote on X on Thursday as India became the fourth country to achieve the feat after the US, China, and the erstwhile Soviet Union.
“It’s an incredible feat for all the scientists and engineers involved. We are proud to partner with you on this mission and space exploration more broadly,” Harris said.
Last month, India signed the three-year-old Artemis Accords, a US-led international partnership on planetary exploration and research.

New Delhi, July 22 (Ians) The rapid rise of Indian-Americans from politics to administration, entrepreneurship to technology, medicine to hospitality, science to academia has put the global spotlight like never before on the high-achieving four million-plus strong diaspora.
The community happens to be the most educated with the highest median income in the US, with an average household earning of $123,700 — making them the top earners in the US among other Asians in the country.
As the profile of the Indian American community — now the second-largest immigrant group in the US — has grown, so too has its economic, political, and social influence, according to a recent Carnegie Endowment study.
In 2010, only 18 per cent of Americans saw India as “very important” to the United States, according to The Chicago Council survey.
Now, India is perceived by Americans as their seventh favourite nation in the world, with 70 per cent of people viewing India favourably in 2023, says a Gallup survey.

As soon as the Writers Guild announced its strike on May 2 over a failure to agree on a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued statements to make it clear the work stoppage was top of mind. “Los Angeles relies on a strong entertainment industry that is the envy of the world while putting Angelenos to work in good, middle-class jobs,” Bass said. “I encourage all sides to come together around an agreement that protects our signature industry and the families it supports.”
For his part, Newsom noted that “when called in by both sides we’ll intervene, to the extent both sides are willing and interested in that,” adding that the strike “has profound consequences direct and indirect.” (A week later, President Biden also weighed in, noting that he hoped “the writers are given...

Updated, 11:58 Am: Eric Garcetti was confirmed by the Senate as the next U.S. ambassador to India, nearly two years after he was first nominated.
His efforts to win confirmation were stalled last year, amid allegations that he knew of sexual harassment complaints against a top aide but did not take action. Garcetti denied those allegations, but it created divisions within the Democratic caucus.
The Senate voted 52-42 for confirmation, with seven Republicans in support and three Democrats against.
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-oh), Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-hi) and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-az) voted against the nomination. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-sc), Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-tn), Sen. Susan Collins (R-me), Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mt), Sen. Todd Young (R-In), Sen. Roger Marshall (R-ks) and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-la) supported the nomination.

Former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s nomination as ambassador to India cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, again, after stalling out over allegations that he knew about sexual harassment complaints by a former top aide.
The committee voted 13-8 to advance his nomination, per Politico. Two Republicans, Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tn) and Sen. Todd Young (R-in) joined with Democrats in support of his nomination. Sen. James Risch (R-id), the committee’s ranking member who supported for Garcetti’s nomination in the last Congress, opposed it this time.
Garcetti’s nomination sailed through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in January, 2021, with no opposition. But it then was delayed throughout the year, as Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-ia), acting on a whistleblower complaint, produced a Senate report that Garcetti “likely knew or should have known” about alleged sexual harassment by a former top aide, Rick Jacobs. President Joe Biden has renominated Eric Garcetti as U.S. ambassador to India, after the former Los Angeles mayor’s nomination failed to make the Senate floor last year.
Garcetti was among a series of nominees who will get restarts in the new Congress.
Biden also renominated Gigi Sohn to serve as the fifth commissioner on the FCC. Her nomination stalled out after the Senate Commerce Committee deadlocked. Republicans opposed her selection, amid opposition from commentators like Tucker Carlson and The Wall Street Journal editorial board, while industry lobbyists worked to stymie her nomination.
The difference for all of Biden’s nominations will be the Democrats’ expanded 51-49 majority, assuming that Arizona’s Kyrsten Sinema caucuses with the Democrats after switching her affiliation to independent. That one vote difference from the 50-50 split in the last Congress could make it easier to advance nominees through committees and to the floor.

Los Angeles’ newly installed mayor, Karen Bass, has rescinded an order to light up the Hollywood sign.
Her predecessor, Eric Garcetti, had signed the order Dec. 11, his last day in office, noting that the 100th anniversary of the sign is approaching in 2023. “There is perhaps no symbol more significant in the world and in Los Angeles’ civic imagination than the Hollywood Sign,” he wrote, adding: “As the centennial of the Hollywood Sign approaches in the coming months, it would seem fitting to build on these successful efforts to illuminate our city’s most famous landmark.”

Mayor Karen Bass rescinded former Mayor Eric Garcetti’s final executive directive that would have created a program to illuminate the Hollywood sign, a representative for Bass confirmed today.
The Los Angeles Times first reported that Bass shut down the directive on Wednesday, citing a memo she wrote to city department leaders stating that there would be no replacement order.
Garcetti signed the directive on Dec. 11, his final day in office. The City Charter notes that executive directives take effect 15 days after publication, and “shall be binding on all departments, commissions, appointed officers and employees of the city” unless it is “revised or rescinded by the mayor.”
Zach Seidl of Bass’ office confirmed to City News Service that Bass rescinded the order “because there were concerns about the legality of the order.”

Karen Bass was sworn in as mayor of Los Angeles on Sunday, becoming the first woman and second Black person to lead the city.
At a large ceremony at Microsoft Theater, against a backdrop of City Hall, Bass took the oath administered by Vice President Kamala Harris, and planned to talk about how Los Angeles was at an “inflection point” as it faces problems of homelessness and housing.
She plans to declare a state of emergency on homelessness on Monday as her first act as mayor that will “recognize the severity of our crisis and break new ground to maximize our ability to urgently move people inside, and do so for good.”
The move will “create the structure necessary for us to have a true, unified and citywide strategy to set us on the path to solve homelessness,” she said.

In an electoral contest that divided Hollywood celebrities down the middle, six-term Democrat Congresswoman Karen Bass has been elected the 43rd Mayor of Los Angeles, ‘Variety’ reports quoting Associated Press projections.
Real estate developer and fellow Democrat Rick Caruso, who was supported by Katie Perry, ‘Avengers’ star Chris Pratt and Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, called Bass to concede the race on Wednesday evening (U.S. Pacific Time).
Bass, the first woman to be elected to the office, had garnered support from a large swath of Hollywood, including Ari Emanuel, Shonda Rhimes, Rosario Dawson, Steven Spielberg, J J Abrams and Jeffrey Katzenberg – the former Fox Studios boss and co-founder of DreamWorks Animation had put 1.85 million into a committee to support the mayor-elect’s candidacy.
“The people of Los Angeles have sent a clear message. It is time for change and it is time for urgency,” Bass said in a statement.

U.S. Rep. Karen Bass defeated developer Rick Caruso Wednesday to become the next mayor of Los Angeles, as voters elevated the first Black woman to hold the post as City Hall contends with multiple scandals that have shaken trust in government, an out-of-control homeless crisis and rising crime rates.
With 70 of the vote tallied, Bass had amassed an insurmountable lead of nearly 47,000 votes.
Bass — a Democrat who was on President-elect Joe Biden’s shortlist for vice president — overcame more than 100 million in spending by the billionaire Caruso’s campaign while arguing that she would be a coalition builder who could heal a troubled city of nearly 4 million.
The election tested whether voters in the heavily Democratic city were willing to turn away from their liberal tendencies and embrace an approach that would place a strong emphasis on public safety.

The focus in the US midterm elections may rightly be on the races for the Senate and House of Representatives, but it is also the time for a host of local elections, of which none is more hotly debated in Hollywood than the Los Angeles mayoral poll.
Necessitated by the departure of Eric Garcetti, who’s US President Joe Biden’s nominee for Ambassador to India and is still awaiting Senate confirmation, the mayoral contest sees six-term US Congresswoman and Democrat Karen Bass pitted against real estate billionaire, and Republican-turned-Democrat, Rick Caruso.
Caruso, who enjoys a slight edge in a dead-heat race dominated by the city’s problem of homelessness and eyebrows raised by his 100 million campaign machine, was given a big shout out by pop star Katy Perry, a loyal Democrat who had performed for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Karen Bass and Rick Caruso are in a close battle to become the next mayor of Los Angeles, as voters proved highly divided over who is best equipped to tackle the city’s homelessness crisis.
As of Wednesday morning, Caruso held a narrow edge with 51.2 to 48.8 for Bass. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder will post the next update to the count on Friday, and a winner may not be clear for some time.
In the June primary, Caruso held a single-digit lead over Bass in the initial returns, only for Bass to surpass him as ballots were tallied over the next several days.
Bass struck an optimistic tone in speaking to her supporters on Tuesday night at the Hollywood Palladium, saying she was fighting for the soul of the city.
“It’s gonna be a long night, and it might take a few days, but when we win –” and the crowd erupted in cheers.

The educational consultant for Kanye “Ye” West’s unaccredited K-8 private Christian school, who holds a prominent position at two Jewish educational institutions, has resigned, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Tamar Andrews, who worked with Donda Academy since July and officially resigned earlier this month, is the director of early childhood education at both Temple Isaiah and American Jewish University, per websites for both institutions. Allison Samek, president of Temple Isaiah of Los Angeles, told THR in a statement: “Dr. Andrews immediately resigned from Donda Academy following Ye West’s tweet. Her last day was October 11, 2022 as she felt she could no longer support the organization.”
West has been widely condemned in recent days for his repeated antisemitic comments. Andrews has yet to respond to THR’s multiple requests for comment, and Aju declined to share a statement.

Update: Joe Biden spoke for about a half an hour to about 100 guests at a fundraiser in Brentwood on Thursday, covering a range of topics including the state of the fractured media.
“There are no editors anymore,” Biden said, per a pool report. “The ability of newspapers to have much impact is de minimis.”
As he did last week at a fundraiser in New York at the home of James Murdoch, Biden also cited Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use tactical nuclear weapons. He also called Pakistan one of the most dangerous countries in the world as it had “nuclear weapons without any cohesion.”
He predicted that the work of the January 6th Committee would result “in some real change” as a consequence of their work.
Biden also participated in a photo line earlier in the evening for those writing higher-dollar checks.

Nury Martinez has stepped down from her seat on the Los Angeles City Council amid the furor over the comments she made on a leaked audio of a conversation with two other colleagues and a top labor official.
“It is with a broken heart that I resign my seat for Council district 6, the community I grew up in and my home,” she said in a statement on Wednesday.
Martinez resigned as City Council president on Monday and then announced the next day that she was taking a leave. But a chorus of top Democrats, including President Joe Biden, have called on her and the two other council members, Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo, to also exit.
The leaked audio, in which Martinez was heard making racist remarks about the Black son of one of her council colleagues, Mike Bonin, as well as disparaging remarks about other ethnic groups, has set off a furor.

First Lady Jill Biden headlined a fundraiser at the home of Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman on Friday, when she called out the “extremists” among Republican lawmakers who refuse to support broadly popular issues.
According to a pool report, Biden said that even though Americans say that they want corporations to pay their fair share in taxes and invest in clean energy, “not a single Republican voted for any of that.”
She was referring to the Inflation Reduction Act, the climate and health bill that passed Congress with no Republican votes.
“These aren’t controversial issues, for heaven’s sakes,” she said. “They aren’t partisan, and that’s why the extremists refuse to support them. They’re putting political ploys, you know, play before the people that they represent, and they’re letting down all Americans, including millions of Republicans, really.”

The Ioc announced today that the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles will be held July 21 through August 6. The website notes that that start date is only 2,195 days away.
The games will have a gala Opening Ceremony split between Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Mayor Eric Garcetti and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said today.
NBC locked in the full media rights for games in 2028 and 2032 at prices set in 2014. The Games have been a key strategic pillar for NBCU over the past three decades.

Sean Penn, Vladimir Zelenskyy Rally Industry Support for Ukraine at Core Gala: ‘This Is Our Reality’
This is not a movie, Ukraine president Vladimir Zelenskyy told the crowd Friday night at the fundraising gala for Sean Penn’s humanitarian relief organization Core.
The embattled leader addressed the dinner event with a pre-recorded video that urged the wealthy and powerful attendees at the Hollywood Palladium event to find ways to support Ukraine. His five-minute plea was intercut with scenes of the detritus of war large and small, from buildings being blown up to a close-up of a battered and bloodied stuffed animal left behind on a road by a fleeing family.
“This is our reality,” said a grim-faced Zelenskyy, who wore a green T-shirt and fatigues while sitting in front of a tactical map. The actor, who became Ukraine’s president in 2019, addressed the industry crowd as a fellow professional. “It’s not VFX, it’s not computer graphics. All of this is our reality,” he said.

The war in Ukraine was top of mind at Friday night’s Core gala, where founder Sean Penn raised funds for the nonprofit’s crisis response efforts around the world in front of a powerful room including President Bill Clinton, Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and stars Sharon Stone and Patrick Stewart.
Core sends teams into the world’s biggest disaster zones to provide aid and assistance, including Haiti after its 2010 earthquake and Ukraine after the Russian invasion.
In addition to raising money, Penn, an active leader in the organization, has spent months in disaster zones and was recently warned to leave the Ukraine, where he was filming a documentary because he was too close to the fighting.
When asked about his dedication to these causes, Stone told The Hollywood Reporter at the L.A. event, “Sean has a vocation. That’s different than a cause.

Updated, with additional comment: A new Senate report concludes that Eric Garcetti “likely knew or should have known” about alleged sexual harassment by a former top aide, despite the Los Angeles mayor’s denial that he was aware of such conduct.

Netflix is partnering with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s organization Group Effort Initiative (Gei) to help provide underrepresented communities with more below-the-line and entry-level jobs in the entertainment industry.
Gei participants will receive on-set production training and job placement across multiple Netflix productions in both the U.S. and Canada in 2022. The partnership follows Gei’s efforts that placed eight entry-level production assistants in various departments on Reynolds’ Netflix film “The Adam Project” in Vancouver in 2020.
The individuals worked in below-the-line Pa positions in camera, construction, costume, makeup, production design, production office and VFX. A city of Los Angeles mandate requiring patrons to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination to enter many indoor establishments and large outdoor events is finally being eliminated, with the City Council giving approval today to an ordinance scrapping the requirement. The decision comes weeks after the state and county decided to do the same.
The council voted 13-1, with Councilman Mike Bonin dissenting, to lift the vaccination mandate. The measure passed with an urgency clause, meaning it will take effect as soon as Mayor Eric Garcetti signs the measure and it is formally published by the City Clerk’s Office. It is unclear how long that will take, but it could be as soon as Friday, when the county’s vaccination requirements officially lift.

The council voted 13-1, with Councilman Mike Bonin dissenting, to lift the vaccination mandate. The measure passed with an urgency clause, meaning it will take effect as soon as Mayor Eric Garcetti signs the measure and it is formally published by the City Clerk’s Office. Developer Rick Caruso’s ads have blanketed the Los Angeles airwaves the message that he is just the non-career politician that the city needs to solve the homelessness crisis and crime, but on Tuesday, he for the first time faced his rivals in the race.
He quickly became the focus of attacks at the USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future/Los Angeles Times/Fox 11 debate.
Councilman Joe Buscaino welcomed him to the debate, “finally.”
City Attorney Mike Feuer chided him for not doing much to build affordable housing and opposing rent control, and then for owning a $100 million yacht registered in the Cayman Islands.
City Councilman Kevin de Leon challenged his plan to build up the Los Angeles Police Department with additional officers as “malarkey.”
Congresswoman Karen Bass, who is the frontrunner based on a recent poll, largely strayed from the potshots yet did take issue with Caruso’s attacks on career politicians.

Los Angeles County will align with the state and lift the requirement that attendees of indoor mega-events such as sporting events or concerts show proof of Covid vaccination or a negative test, L.A. County health officials said today.
According to the County Department of Public Health, the requirement will be lifted April 1 in conjunction with the state, which is also scrapping the mandate.
The move follows the lifting of other Covid restrictions in the county — such as indoor mask-wearing requirements — in response to dwindling infection and hospitalization numbers. But the roughly 3 million county residents who live within the City of Los Angeles are not so lucky.
Per the Public Health Order signed by Mayor Eric Garcetti on March 4 of this year, “a Covered Location shall require each Patron to provide Proof of Vaccination upon entering an Indoor Portion of a Covered Location. A Covered Location shall require Proof of...

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s path to becoming the next U.S. ambassador to India hit a potential snag Thursday when a senior senator said he wants Garcetti’s confirmation vote delayed pending an investigation into whether the mayor knew about and ignored sexual harassment and assault allegations made against his former senior advisor.
In a letter made available to Politico, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), “I will object (to Garcetti’s nomination) because I have received numerous credible allegations from multiple whistleblowers alleging that Mr. Garcetti, while mayor of Los Angeles, had knowledge of sexual harassment and assaults allegedly committed against multiple city employees and their associates by his close advisor, and that he ignored the misconduct.”
Investigators in Grassley’s office are reportedly conducting their own investigation into the allegations and requested the nomination be put on hold until their process is complete.

“It seems like when we have something high-profile, like the Super Bowl or the Emmys, the rules just don’t seem to matter any more,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn at a board meeting on Tuesday.
The context: While the state of California will lift its Covid indoor mask-wearing requirement for vaccinated people tomorrow, Los Angeles County will continue enforcing its own indoor face-covering rule, despite growing dissent among L.A.’s powerful Board of Supervisors.
Last week, Supervisor Kathryn Barger called on the county to align with the state, formally requesting that county public health officials lift its indoor mask mandate before the Super Bowl. She said the rule creates too much confusion and frustration among residents to have stricter local rules than the state’s. The County Public Health Department indicated last week that it could be late April before the indoor mask mandate was lifted.

Every fan attending Sunday’s Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium will be given a KN95 mask and, according to L.A. County Public Health and SoFi Stadium officials, they’re expected to wear it. But will they? That remains to be seen.
In a meeting of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors this week Janice Hahn, whose district lies adjacent to Inglewood, worried about the recent masklessness at stadiums vis à vis the Super Bowl.
“I hope it’s not a Super-Spreader Bowl,” she said, “because that would impact all the sacrifices that people have made.”
Two weeks ago, the vast majority of fans attending the NFC championship game at SoFi between the Rams and San Francisco 49ers were seen on camera ignoring the mandate. In fact, Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti took heat for being photographed without masks, even as they promoted them publicly.

Naomi Seligman, the former communications director to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, has filed a complaint with prosecutors claiming that Garcetti committed perjury when he denied under oath that he did not know about allegations of misconduct by a top aide and adviser.
The complaint comes as Garcetti is awaiting a confirmation vote by the U.S. Senate to be ambassador to India after his nomination cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The complaint — read it here — was filed by attorneys for Whistleblower Aid. The complaint also alleges that the mayor conspired to cover up complaints of sexual harassment against Rick Jacobs, who served as Garcetti’s deputy chief of staff and then worked on non profits connected to the mayor. He stepped down in October, 2020, but has denied the allegations.
