“We needed every single step of the way to get us to Broadway. And that entire process took almost 13 years,” reveals David Korins of the long journey to bring “Here Lies Love” to Broadway. From a workshop in Massachusetts, to productions in Seattle, London, and New York, the scenic designer refined his concept for the immersive disco musical that would see audiences dancing inside of, and moving through, his nightclub set. “It wasn’t a concept that was layered on top of the show,” explains Korins, “It was literally baked into the idea of the show.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the third time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 19, to discuss eligibility of 8 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
They discussed eight productions: “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Doubt,” “The Notebook,” “An Enemy of the People,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Who’s Tommy,” “The Outsiders” and “Lempicka.” The group also met during the winter to discuss late fall and winter openings, but those determinations were not made public until now. Those shows include: “I Need That,” “Harmony,” “Spamalot,” “How to Dance in Ohio,” “Appropriate” and “Prayer for the French Republic.”
The most notable ruling is that “Appropriate” will compete as a revival. The hit play from Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has never been seen on Broadway before this season, but previously enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run with a different director and cast. Since it is the play’s Broadway debut, Jacobs-Jenkins will appear...

Here Lies Love, the costly David Byrne-Fatboy Slim immersive musical that required an extensive renovation of the Broadway Theatre for its dance club setting, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, November 26.
When it closes, Here Lies Love will have played 33 previews and 150 regular performances at the Broadway Theatre.
At an estimated cost of $22 million, Here Lies Love, which uses a dance club setting to tell the story of the rise and fall of Imelda Marcos, will now be among Broadway’s priciest flops in recent years.
A long-gestating production, the musical had its world premiere Off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2013, returning to the venue in 2014-2015. A West End production debuted at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2014, and a production opened at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2017.

Gotta feeling ’24 is gonna be a good year, at least for fans of The Who’s Tommy: The acclaimed Chicago stage production directed by Des McAnuff is heading to Broadway.
The newly reimagined production, produced by Stephen Gabriel and Ira Pittelman, will begin previews March 8, 2024, at the Nederlander Theatre, with an opening night set for March 28.
In a statement, Pete Townshend, who wrote the music, lyrics and co-wrote the book with McAnuff, said, “In 1969, when I originally wrote Tommy with The Who, nobody had ever written popular music songs about trauma, nobody talked about bullying, domestic sexual abuse was a subject that was virtually censored.
“Then, in 1993,” he continued, “working with Des on the staged theatre piece, we broke the established rules for a musical show. Now, the current generation is breaking all of those rules again – and what Des has achieved with this incredible new production honors them and their courage and audacity.

Chicago – The Opening Night ovation certainly acknowledged that the audience “Saw, Felt, was Touched and Healed” by the passionate and celebratory performance of “The Who’s Tommy.” Adapted from the iconic rock opera created by The Who in 1969, the Goodman Theater revival … with 1990s origins … was written by Pete Townsend and Des McAnuff (also director).
The adaptation was maniacally choreographed and thoughtfully presented, with an amazing looking stage design, and lead actor Ali Louis Bourzgui delivered a heroic rendering of the conflicted title boy who turns off his life, only to revive it through a literal breakthrough. The Goodman Theatre run, which will go to Broadway, has been extended to August 6th, 2023. For ticket info and more, click Tommy.
Play Rating: 4.5/5.0
The story is rooted in the British World War II, as Tommy’s eventual father Captain Walker (Adam Jacobs) meets and marries his mother (Allison Luff) during the conflict, but is captured by the Germans.

Update, video added: First-look images were released today of the wildly revamped Broadway Theatre that will be transformed, at least in part, into the disco dance club home of Here Lies Love, the immersive David Byrne-Fatboy Slim musical about Imelda Marcos.
In six artist renderings, the Broadway Theatre, a traditional proscenium playhouse built in 1924 and remodeled in 1991, is turned, partially, into a huge dance club, with the actors’ performance space set amidst a standing, dancing crowd on the floor where the front section of seating would normally be.
See the renderings above and below. A video of the project also was posted today (watch it above).
The musical begins performances Saturday, June 17 ahead of an official opening night on Thursday, July 20.
In addition to releasing the renderings today, producers unveiled a multi-part seating and standing plan, with ticket-buyers given four viewing options (descriptions provided by the production):

Here Lies Love, a disco musical featuring a score by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, will come to Broadway this summer.
The musical centers on the life of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, who was known for her lavish lifestyle amid civil unrest in the country. To tell the story, the Broadway Theatre will be reconfigured from a traditional proscenium stage into a “dance club environment,” which will allow audience members to stand and move with the actors, according to the production.
The idea for the musical came out of a concept album recorded by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim and released in 2010. The show had its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Public Theater in 2013, followed by a return engagement there from 2014 to 2015, a run at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2014 and a run at Seattle Repertory Theatre in 2017.

In October 2020, months into the pandemic’s decimation of the restaurant industry, Dan Levy got the idea for “The Big Brunch,” the uplifting HBO Max cooking competition that revolves around his favorite meal of the day. Levy was in bed at the time, and sprung up to “write it down from start to finish.” The next day, he called his managers to tell them about it, and when they asked Levy what exactly the show would be, he presented it to them in “great detail.”
As we sat together on a seafoam green banquette, facing the open kitchen in which the chefs cook on the show’s bistro-inspired set — designed by David Korins, of “Hamilton” fame — it was clear that those details are very important to “The Big Brunch.”
As is the show’s heart, with which fans of Levy’s “Schitt’s Creek” are by now well-acquainted. Levy has friends who are chefs,...

As Disney Animation moves toward its 100th anniversary, the studio is collaborating with the producers of Immersive Van Gogh to create Disney Animation Immersive Experience, set to open this December in Toronto.
“A combination of an art exhibit and movie theater” is how Oscar-winning producer J. Miles Dale (The Shape of Water), who is leading the creative team, describes the walk-thru experience. He says it will incorporate “three-quarters” of the century of Disney titles from early work like Snow White to The Little Mermaid, Frozen and Encanto — along with their classic music — while taking advantage of projection mapping to create a 360-degree experience.
Working with Toronto-based Lighthouse Immersive, Disney Animation plans to open the experience at Lighthouse ArtSpace Toronto and then visit additional cities including Cleveland, Nashville, Detroit, Denver, Boston, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Columbus in early 2023. Anaheim’s Disneyland is in the plans.

From sets that extend into the audience to a production mandate that’s all about keeping the kinetic energy flowing seamlessly through ever-changing stagecraft, producers Will Packer and Shayla Cowan took a Thursday press conference to set the stage for an event that’s leaning on populist appeal while attempting not to further piss off riled-up cinephiles. “We are going to keep surprising you,” said Packer.
Controversially, eight categories will be presented before the live broadcast and edited into the live show, a move that’s meant to help keep things moving by forgoing tracking shots of winners making the long walk from their seats to the stage.

The 94th Academy Awards is returning to the Dolby Theatre this Sunday, and Swarovski has teamed up with Emmy-award creative director and designer David Korins to provide 90,000 Swarovski Crystals for the stage design.
Perhaps the most dazzling aspect to Korins’ staging is the crystal curtain, which is made from Swarovski Crystals. “The beautiful thing about working with Swarovski Crystals is that you use them just the way they are. They shine and sparkle the way you want them to,” Korins tells Variety. “With Swarovski Crystals, there’s no need for scenic enhancements, what you want to do is accentuate what they are already meant to do and that is capture and reflect light beautifully.”
Korins’ stage design will also feature a dome, two floating orbs illuminated with strands of Swarovski Crystals and a swirling design. Producers Will Packer and Shayla Cowan wanted a design that felt modern and fun.

Will Packer, the show producer of the 2022 Oscars deflected a question about whether Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky would feature in this weekend’s 94th Academy Awards, by telling a press conference on Thursday (March 24) “The show is still in process.”
It emerged this week that co-host Amy Schumer wanted some kind of virtual participation by Zelensky, who has won admiration on the global stage for his defiant stance in the war with Russia. That idea was rejected and while Packer did not address the issue directly he said,...

The 94th Academy Awards are just three days away and this afternoon producers Will Packer and Shayla Cowan, hosts Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall, director Glenn Weiss, musical director Adam Blackstone and production designer David Korins took questions from the press about the telecast. Will Packer, the producer of this year’s Oscars telecast, said the annual celebration of movies is working to create a more streamlined and television-friendly experience. It’s one that will embrace social media, with Packer telling journalists on Thursday that allowing fans to vote on their favorite movie of the year on Twitter will help democratize the experience. As part of that effort a special award, dubbed the Oscars fan favorite prize, will be handed out on Sunday.
“It just helps to augment what is already a show that’s all about elevating the best of community building,” said Packer. “It creates a two-way dialogue and is more inclusive because the Oscars always felt so stuffy and so one-percenter.”
But some of Packer’s moves have been controversial. Among the changes to the telecast is a decision to present eight categories, including awards for sound, documentary short, and editing,...

In a year of controversy and a self-described untypical Oscars, co-host Wanda Sykes on Thursday promised there would be some jabs in Sunday’s ceremony, but no one will get hurt.
“We’re trying to stayed aligned with the themes,” The Good Fight alum said today of the uniting power of film at a virtual press conference for the 94th Academy Awards.. “We aren’t going to trash anyone – satire but not mean-spirited,” Sykes added.
However, never one to let a good joke go, Sykes wasn’t entirely done, noting how hard it is to keep things PG and kind-hearted.
“Regina, we got to hold her back sometimes, she goes for the jugular,” the Upshaws star said of co-host and Girls Trip star Regina Hall.
Sitting next to Sykes, Hall had her own take on working with both Sykes and Amy Schumer and Sunday’s show.

The Oscars show producer Will Packer has announced key production team members for the 94th Academy Awards, which are set to air live on ABC March 27. In addition, for the first time, a new culinary partner, Ghetto Gastro, will collaborate with longtime chef Wolfgang Puck on the Governor’s Ball menu.
Puck and his Wolfgang Puck Catering will again create the menu for this year’s Governor’s Ball taking place after the telecast, this year with Bronx-based Ghetto Gastro contributing additional menu items. Ghetto Gastro blends influences from the African diaspora, global South ingredients and hip-hop, according to the Academy.
“This is a first-of-its-kind collaboration that breaks boundaries and brings a new flavor to the Oscars Governors Ball,” said Packer. “The Ghetto Gastro Collective, Wolfgang Puck and Academy teams embraced this dope alliance, which is all about uniting people in a true celebration of film and food.”

Maybe Lin-Manuel Miranda really can do everything. When Broadway’s favorite bookstore — The Drama Book Shop — was evicted from its longtime Theater District home in January, Miranda and some influential pals came to its rescue.
But as any New Yorker knows to their bones, the only thing riskier than an audition is pinning your dreams to real estate wishes. So today’s news is welcomed: The Drama Book Shop will reopen its doors in March at its new location — 266 West 39th Street — just a block south of the previous one.
Stuffed with scripts, librettos, monologues and any other books about or needed by the theater community, the independent bookstore had been a district mainstay for more than 100 years (though not in the same location). Squeezed out of its building by Manhattan’s ever-costly real estate market, the store announced its closing.

As Robert Schenkkan’s The Great Society begins pulling you back back back to a cultural moment that rivals our own in meanness, division and barrel-scraping crumminess, Brian Cox would seem to have the toughest job on Broadway. Portraying the accidental president who succeeded the martyred one only to land waste deep in one big muddy after another, Cox must convince his audience that he can match, hog-tie and serve up like so much barbecue a personality as big as the Lone Star State itself.
I mean, just imagine having to follow Bryan Cranston.
If you’ve seen HBO’s robust Succession, you already know Cox seems up for just about any challenge tossed his way, including the role of Lyndon Baines Johnson in the second of Schenkkan’s two-part bio-drama. Brian Cox, star of HBO’s “Succession,” will play Lyndon B. Johnson in this fall’s Broadway production of Robert Schenkkan’s “The Great Society” — the follow-up to his Tony-winning play “All the Way” that secured Bryan Cranston a Tony of his own as the Texas political giant who became the 36th president of the United States.
Performances will begin a 12-week run on September 6 for a still-to-be-announced official opening at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center. The show includes two dozen locations and 50 characters, including Richard J. Daley, Martin Luther King Jr. and Hubert Humphrey (Richard Thomas).

He may not have sought nor did he accept a return to the White House, but Lyndon B. Plenty of attention is paid to the top races and acting categories at the Tony Awards. But if you are looking to do well in our prediction contest, you will also have to make smart decisions in the below-the-line categories as well. The four design categories often trip up Tony pundits, especially when there is no one show predicted to sweep. There is no single such juggernaut this season, which means upsets and surprises are likely. To provide some help with these tough categories, take a look at the analysis below before you make any final predictions.
Scenic Design
Flip a coin, because “Hadestown” and “Beetlejuice” are locked in a neck and neck race here. My gut says David Korins will win for having the “most” scenic design of any musical this season for “Beetlejuice.” It’s an immense set with moving parts, that perfectly captures a twisted Tim Burton vibe while keeping things fresh.

Maybe if they’d said it a fourth time. Three times – “Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!” – summons to life the stripe-coated, fright-wigged demon that made a superstar of Michael Keaton way back when. Could a fourth have magically conjured that extra something needed to transform Broadway’s Beetlejuice into something beyond the realm of good enough?
Directed by the busy and talented Alex Timbers, a long-in-the-making musical comedy Beetlejuice, based, faithfully if not enough, on Tim Burton’s 1988 film opens tonight at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre. There’s plenty worth a haunt here, from David Korins’ off-kilter spook house set to Alex Brightman’s raspy-voiced title performance and, most of all, the deliriously gorgeous singing of young Sophia Anne Caruso, and it all comes within reasonable reach of exorcising the bad vibes that attached themselves to the production during its pre-Broadway run in Washington D.

The Oscars won’t have a host or “everyday people” (who show producer Donna Gigliotti says “don’t get me ratings”), but it will have 40,000 real roses onstage. That’s according to production designer David Korins , who offered a preview of this year’s “Crystal Cloud” stage on Instagram.
“I think we can all agree that the world is filled with too many straight lines & rigid thinking,” he wrote while introducing the curved design. “For this years #oscars I have designed a world based on the ideas of inclusion & community. The design uses warm welcoming shapes that will not only reach out & wrap around the audience but towards the viewers at home. We call this piece the Crystal Cloud. It’s only one of many looks for the #oscars on February 24 (a week from today). It weighs 1600 lbs & I can tell you (because we teched it yesterday) that it’s truly spectacular in person.

Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures’ brewing musical adaptation of “Beetlejuice” has mapped out its road to Broadway, locking in a world premiere run at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. in October.
An adaptation of the 1988 Warner Bros. comedy that starred Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, “Beetlejuice” has music and lyrics by Eddie Perfect, the Australian actor-writer-composer who’s also at work on the musical version of “King Kong,” and book by Scott Brown and Anthony King (“Broad City”). Alex Timbers (“Rocky,” “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”) directs, with choreography by Connor Gallagher (“The Robber Bridegroom”).
“Beetlejuice” centers on an obnoxious ghost (played by Keaton in the movie) and the misfit teen (played by Rider) who moves into a haunted country house with parents she can’t stand. The movie, with a story written by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson, has become a fan favorite, and talk of a sequel recurs...
