Bill Hader is being commended for his decision to wear a face mask while attending Monday night’s Emmy Awards.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Fans joke Johnson caused the show’s downfall over famously awkward 2019 appearance
After 19 seasons on the air, Ellen DeGeneres is calling it quits on her talk show hosting career. DeGeneres told The Hollywood Reporter that she made the decision to end the show simply because it’s “just not a challenge anymore” but obviously, the people of Twitter have other theories. And, in calling the host on her claims, one meme of Dakota Johnson has risen to the surface – or rather, risen to the surface again.
In November 2019, actress Dakota Johnson appeared on “Ellen” just shy of two months after her 30th birthday. DeGeneres offered Johnson some birthday wishes before calling her out on not getting an invite to the party. Of course, that wasn’t actually the case, and Johnson made sure Ellen knew it.
“Actually no, that’s not the truth Ellen. You were invited,” Johnson revealed. “Last...

While much of the world was eager to bid farewell to the year that brought the world to a standstill, a team of female comics decided to the best way to kick 2020 to the curb was to give the year its own funeral. Yearly Departed, a one-off Amazon comedy special sees a line-up of top comedians including Rachel Brosnahan, Tiffany Haddish, Natasha Rothwell, Patti Harrison, Natasha Leggero, Ziwe and Sarah Silverman put to bed an abysmal year with a series of eulogies that say goodbye to things such as casual sex, TV cops, Making America Great Again and pants.

Bess Kalb didn’t mean to end 2020 by making Christopher Hitchens’ “Why Women Aren’t Funny” go viral. The 2007 Vanity Fair essay is — like so much of its late author’s work — self-indulgent, poorly written and lacking any well-defined quality beside its ability to irritate people.
One of those irritated people, more than a decade ago, was a young Kalb. In a Twitter thread posted Tuesday, the veteran late-night writer recalled the moment when, as an unsuspecting college sophomore, she picked up a copy of Vanity Fair in Penn Station, then read Hitchens’ essay.
She then drew a narrative line from that moment, which inspired her to pursue a career in comedy, to the creation of “Yearly Departed,” the new Amazon special created by Kalb and featuring a cast made up mostly of women and an all-woman writing staff.

Roasts, in their standard form, thrive on chaos. They give speakers the green light to share the unfiltered truth of the night’s subject — or, more often, an exaggerated interpretation — leading to story after story, joke after joke, screed after screed that crosses the boundaries of accepted social mores. But, despite certain selections for Comedy Central’s (in)famous televised events, roasts typically work best when the roastee is well-liked. After all, it’s supposed to be an honor. Sure, taking a jackass to task can be fun, but there’s added excitement to peeking behind the curtain of an everyman’s gracious public image, just as there’s an added challenge for comedians to hit a not-so-easy target.
“Yearly Departed,” Amazon Prime Video’s end-of-year comedy special that says goodbye to “the year we love to hate,” is not officially a roast. It’s a wake. Speakers Tiffany Haddish,...

Director Linda Mendoza has more than three decades years of production experience across scripted and specials content, and ironically it was HBO’s “Greater Tuna,” which she worked on in 1984, that best prepared her for Amazon Prime Video’s “Yearly Departed.”
“Greater Tuna” featured two lead actors playing all of the roles of the inhabitants of the small-town of Greater Tuna, Texas in the comedy project, which meant its visual style needed to feature a lot of locked-off shots, with a heavy post-production lift to insert the same two actors into a scene multiple times, in each role. Because “Yearly Departed,” a “variety special meets ‘Waiting for Guffman,'” as Mendoza puts it, was filmed amid the Covid-19 pandemic, it, too, isolated performances and dropped them into the same scene via VFX.

The duo have set a comedy special at Amazon called “Yearly Departed,” which will feature an all-women lineup of comedians delivering delivering a series of eulogies for the year. Robinson will host the special, and Brosnahan will appear in addition to executive producing.

Hollywood insiders expressed deep concerns on Saturday as President Donald Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death this month of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
As a federal judge and as a legal scholar, Barrett has a track record as a social conservative who stands in staunch opposition to many liberal causes and policies that have been embraced by Hollywood heavyweights, such as abortion, education, health care and immigration policy.
Barrett at present serves as a federal judge on the Seventh Circuit — serving Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin — to which she was nominated by Trump in 2017. She spent 15 years as a law professor at the University of Notre Dame. Earlier in her career she clerked for arch-conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in 1998 and 1999.
In a Rose Garden ceremony, Trump introduced Barrett as “a woman of unparalleled achievement, towering intellect, sterling credentials and unyielding loyalty to the Constitution.

Kathy Griffin and other comedians voiced their support for Ariel Dumas, a writer on CBS’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” after she apologized for a joke about Brett Kavanaugh. “Whatever happens, I’m just glad we ruined Brett Kavanaugh’s life,” wrote Dumas in a since-deleted tweet. Predictably, right-wing Twitter users and Kavanaugh supporters seized upon the joke, including the actor James Woods. After making her account private and deleting the tweet, Dumas apologized the next day, writing: “The last couple of weeks have been hard for the country and for me personally. The complexity of frustration, anger and sadness can’t be accurately conveyed on twitter, and I regret my tone-deaf attempt at sarcasm in the wake of it.”

Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer Ariel Dumas apologized yesterday for tweeting about her happiness in helping to ruin Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s life. Considering Kavanaugh had just secured a lifelong gig on the Supreme Court, the “ruined life” tweet was, as Dumas later said, an attempt at sarcasm.
But did Dumas go too far – in apologizing? Many of her fellow comedy writers are coming to her defense. One even pledged “fire and fury” from Dumas’ fellow female comedy writers if the CBS Late Show writer is “financially” punished.
“Every comedy writer supports you,” tweeted Danny Zuker, executive producer of ABC’s Modern Family. “How great would it be if the people trolling you were this outraged over a woman being sexually assaulted?
Kathy Griffin tweeted Monday that Dumas is “a comedy writer, being held to a higher standard than the President of the United States. Love you @ArielDumas, f*ck the haters.

Fox News Channel host Laura Ingraham has come under fire for comments she made on The Ingraham Angle on Monday, calling immigration detention centers for children, “essentially summer camps.” Ingraham’s show faced an advertiser boycott in April after she took to Twitter to mock Parkland survivor David Hogg. On the heels of the “summer camps” quip Monday night, some on Twitter were using the hashtag #boycottlaura.
On her program, Ingraham said, “As more illegal immigrants are rushing the border, more kids are being separated from their parents and temporarily housed at what are, essentially, summer camps.” Ingraham added, “The president is doing what we should have been doing all along, prosecuting all border crashers.”

Mike Huckabee Suffers Twitter's Wrath for Cheap Shot About Ruth Bader Ginsburg Skipping Trump's Sotu
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is skipping President Trump’s first State of the Union address on Tuesday, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee felt the need to explain why in the form of a tasteless Twitter joke.
On Sunday, the Republican tweeted a photo of the infamous moment when Ginsburg nodded off during former President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech in 2015.
“It’s not fair that ppl are criticizing Justice Ginsberg for skipping Sotu! Security concerns wouldn’t allow her to bring Cpap machine into House Chamber,” Huckabee joked, referring to a device called a continuous positive airway pressure machine,...

President Donald Trump‘s use of Twitter has long been a controversial component of his presidency, for several reasons. One of them is his frequent hitting of the “block” button, which the president has unleashed on a number of notable actors, authors and activists who have used Twitter as a platform to criticize him and his administration.
On Tuesday, model Chrissy Teigen, voted one of Time’s 2017 “25 Most Influential People on the Internet,” was the latest to be blocked by the president.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...
