Good neighbor policy? Wartime exigencies inspired an intra-hemisphere cultural exchange, with the movies seizing on the new popularity of Latin music. The Oscar voting deadline is today at 5 Pm Pst and if there are any Academy stragglers looking for help from the guilds they not only got the Directors Guild nominations yesterday, but the Cinematographers this morning and now the Costume Designers Guild have weighed in with their nominees in three categories -- Contemporary, Period and Fantasy Films. Obviously when it comes to Oscar predictions it's natural to lean toward period pieces and in this case it's interesting to see neither The Invisible Woman or The Book Thief among the nominees. I also wonder if Casey Storm can end up with an Oscar nomination with her near-future designs in Her, a film I didn't even have among my predictions (which, to be honest, were a little dusty they'd been so ignored), but have now moved into the top five. I have included the complete list of nominees below and you can...

Today I have a big one for you, Terence Winter's screenplay for Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, all 137 pages of it. Along with that Disney has released Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith's screenplay for Saving Mr. Banks, effectively bringing the number of 2014 Oscar contending screenplays available for download in this very spot to 34. I'm still waiting to hear back on screenplays for Captain Phillips, American Hustle and Inside Llewyn Davis, but I think you have enough reading material for right now. It's almost become too many to mention, but the list of screenplays available below includes Gravity, 42, The Great Gatsby, Prisoners, Nebraska, All is Lost, Frozen, The Way, Way Back, Philomena, August: Osage County, Dallas Buyers Club, The Place Beyond the Pines, Enough Said, 12 Years a Slave, The Bling Ring, The Spectacular Now, Spring Breakers, Before Midnight, The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Kill Your Darlings,...

I thought the last update of 2014 Oscar contending screenplays available for download was impressive, but today's update includes more than you're going to know what to do with as Warner Bros. has made Jonas and Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity screenplay available along with the scripts for 42, The Great Gatsby and Prisoners. Meanwhile, Paramount has released Bob Nelson's script for Nebraska and Roadside has released J.C. Chandor's 31-page outline for All is Lost. Finally, Disney has made the Frozen screenplay available once again, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash's screenplay for The Way, Way Back, Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope's screenplay for Philomena and Tracy Letts' August: Osage County This brings the total number of screenplays to 32 and I've been told I can expect the likes of Inside Llewyn Davis, American Hustle and Captain Phillips as early as this week, so stay tuned. Who am I to pick on A Haunted House 2 when the first film opened with $18.1 million on a $2.5 million production budget? Even though that film only first hit theaters in January of this year, the trailer for the sequel has arrived and while the material isn’t in line with my personal taste, neither were the jokes in the promo campaign for film one. Was it just a fluke and Haunted House 2 is bound to tank come March 28, 2014? We’ll have to wait and see, but for now it’s A Haunted House: 1, Perri: 0, so this one’s getting a free pass this week. Unfortunately, three other trailers don’t have that same luxury. The Best Stuff 1. The Invisible Woman As someone who requires a little extra coaxing before submitting to a period piece, I was ready to turn off...

After adding three more screenplays yesterday, I have another three today as A24 has made available the screenplays for Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter screenplay for The Spectacular Now and Harmony Korine's script for Spring Breakers. The most interesting thing about these three, for me, is you won't find one of the more memorable scenes in the film in the script since it was improvised on the spot by James Franco. Of course, I'm speaking of the "Look at my sh*t" scene, which I have for you below just in case you needed a reminder. Look at all my sh*t. I've got shorts, every f**king color. I've got designer t-shirts. I've got gold bullets for motherf**kin' vampires. Scarface on repeat. Constant, y'all. Got Escape -- Calvin Klein Escape -- mix that sh*t up with Calvin Klein Be.

Judi Dench in ‘Philomena’ movie: The one British Independent Film Award nominee surely to get BAFTA, Academy Award nominations Among the 2013 British Independent Film Award nominees, only one has a truly good chance of being shortlisted for both the BAFTAs and the Academy Awards. That’s Best Actress Bifa nominee Judi Dench for Stephen Frears’ "based on a true story" drama Philomena, in which Dench plays a woman whose son was taken away from her after she was sent to a convent. For the record, Dench has four previous Best Actress Oscar nominations (Mrs. Brown, Iris, Mrs. Henderson Presents, Notes on a Scandal), in addition to one win and a nomination as Best Supporting Actress (win: Shakespeare in Love; nomination: Chocolat). (Photo: Judi Dench as Philomena Lee in Philomena.) Needless to say, the British Independent Film Awards have little influence on North America’s awards-season favorites. Instead of a platform release beginning Dec. 27, Jason Reitman's film starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin will have a one-week Oscar-qualifying run and then open wide on Jan. 31.
Paramount has backed off plans to open Labor Day, Jason Reitman's upcoming film starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, in limited release over a very crowded Christmas holiday, instead planning a one-week awards-qualifying run ahead of a wide release.
The distributor has shifted the film from a slower platform release beginning on Dec. 25 to a wide release on Jan. 31, after an Oscar qualifying run on Dec. 27.

The film, based on Joyce Maynard's novel of the same name, stars Winslet as a depressed mother who gives a mysterious and possibly dangerous stranger (Brolin) a ride in her car.
Paramount and Indian Paintbrush co-produced the film, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on Aug. 29.

With Michael B. Release dates for The Monuments Men, Grace of Monaco and Foxcatcher moved back, ruling them out of 2014 Oscars
It was the awards season that looked too good to be true. And so, indeed, it proved. Over the past few weeks, three of the most eagerly anticipated films scheduled for release in coming months have had their release dates abruptly moved back, thereby ruling them out of the running for the 2014 Oscars.
Audiences will now have to wait until later next year for their first look at George Clooney's second world war art heist caper The Monuments Men, as well as Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly in biopic Grace of Monaco and Steve Carell as reclusive philanthropist-turned-killer John du Pont in Foxcatcher.
Reasons and theories for the delays have abounded, with Clooney and Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller citing late-running post-production, and the director of Grace of Monaco going public over...

After a long period of speculation it looks like Paramount has finally settled on a Christmas Day release for Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's The Wolf of Wall Street. After turning in a cut of the film that was said to be a little over three hours, Scorsese took to the editing room to trim some of the running time before he heads off to head the Marrakech Intl. Originally slated for a November 15 release, the adaptation of Jordan Belfort's tell-all autobiography stars DiCaprio as Belfort, a Long Island penny stockbroker who served 20 months in prison for refusing to cooperate in a massive 1990s securities fraud case that involved widespread corruption on Wall Street and in the corporate banking world, including mob infiltration. We'll begin today's MPAA ratings bulletin with the unsurprising R-rating for the profanity-heavy Dom Hemingway, which I saw, enjoyed and reviewed at the Toronto Film Festival this year. Another film I saw in Toronto that also received an R-rating, though I can't seem to remember what was so "R rated" about it is John Turturro's Fading Gigolo. The reason for the rating is listed as "some sexual content, language and brief nudity," and it's just a little surprising all that "some" and some "brief" nudity gets an R when I don't remember anything all that offensive at all. You can read my review right here. Next is the upcoming Fox title The Book Thief based on the best selling novel and it gets a none-too-surprising PG-13 rating while Disney's upcoming animated feature Frozen scores a PG. Simon Kinberg recently came aboard to rewrite the script for 20th Century Fox's upcoming Fantastic Four reboot with Josh Trank (Chronicle) at the helm and now a shortlist of actors up for consideration in the film has surfaced and included is a name Trank previously took to Twitter to deny. Up until now, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) who co-starred in Trank's Chronicle is the only name that has remained consistently "attached", perhaps taking on the role of Johnny Storm (aka the Human Torch), the role Chris Evans once occupied before taking on Captain America. He appears to still be a strong possibility and now five new names are being floated. First, Variety reports Kit Harington (Jon Snow on "Game of Thrones"), Jack O'Connell (300: Rise of an Empire) and Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now) will read for the role of Reed Richards, the latter of which was first rumored...

Though we've heard rumblings of names like Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan being in the mix for the gestating reboot of Fantastic Four at 20th Century Fox, there hasn't really been any confirmation one way or the other. Simon Kinberg was just recently brought on to rewrite the script, so we thought casting might still be a little ways off, but Variety has gotten their hands on the shortlist of names Fox has been lining up for screen tests. Jordan has been confirmed to be the only actor mentioned to play Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch, which is interesting, because the actresses who would play his sister Sue Storm, The Invisible Woman, wouldn't seem to match up with the actor genetically if they're supposed to be siblings. The actresses on a list for Sue Storm include Kate Mara ("House of Cards"), Margot Robbie (from The Wolf of Wall Street,...

Kit Harington and Saoirse Ronan are amongst the names being linked with Josh Trank's upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four...
With a release date firmly set for March 2015, director Josh Trank will look to be shooting his reboot of the Fantastic Four movie franchise by early next year at the latest. The last we'd heard on it was that Simon Kinberg, of X-Men: Days Of Future Past fame, had been hired to do a script polish on the project. It's also long been reported that Michael B Jordan is the frontrunner for the role of Johnny Storm.
But what about everyone else? Well, according to Variety, Kit Harington (Game Of Thrones), Jack O'Connell and Miles Teller are candidates for the role of Mr Fantastic/Reed Richards.
The role of Sue Storm/ The Invisible Woman meanwhile has a shortlist that apparently includes Margot Robbie, Kate Mara and Saoirse Ronan.

Fox is keeping it in the family as they approach the next "Fantastic Four" film.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that screenwriter Simon Kinberg has been hired to retool Josh Trank's script for the upcoming "Fantastic Four" reboot. He'll also serve as producer. According to the report, Kinberg's contributions to the new "Fantastic Four" script could be a "substantial" overhaul.
Kinberg is just the latest writer to lend his talents to the world of "Fantastic Four," following on the heels of drafts penned by Seth Grahame-Smith, Michael Green and more. But Kinberg is a familiar quantity when it comes to Fox-owned Marvel heroes, having contributed to "X-Men: The Last Stand," "X-Men: First Class" and the coming "X-Men: Days of Future Past" from Bryan Singer.
As of now, "Fantastic Four" is set for a March 2015 release date, but given Kinberg's relatively late-game hire, it's worth wondering just how far along the movie is.

Obviously I'm in Toronto and what I'm seeing you can track right here, but for those that don't want to click the link so far I've seen Don Jon, Blue is the Warmest Color, The Fifth Estate, The Invisible Woman, Tom at the Farm, Prisoners ,Parkland, The Railway Man, Dallas Buyers Club and Gravity. I've been able to review several of them already and plenty more reviews are on the way with Prisoners and Dallas Buyers Club reviews coming later today... depending on when you're reading this. As for what I'm watching today, that would be The Double, Can a Song Save Your Lifec, Philomena and Dom Hemingway in my only day here in Toronto with five movies and finding time to write all the reviews has become the hardest part. Luckily, things will begin to free up a little next week and hopefully I'll be caught up sooner rather than later.

The combination of sun, a wedding and Pierce Brosnan should be fair warning of the quality of this jewel heist comedy aimed at retirees, says Henry Barnes

There's herbal teas that hit harder than The Love Punch, a jewel heist comedy for retirees that has Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson rattling off to France to steal back their nest egg.
Brosnan plays Richard, a financial something-or-other facing bankruptcy a week before retirement. A corporation has come in and wiped his company's pension fund. Its slimy boss has invested his takings in a blingy diamond for his trophy bride. The little peoples' futures are on the line, so Pierce and Emma cross the channel to confront the villain, pinch the rock and bicker their way back into each others' affections. They're joined in the...

French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve has made an English language thriller both gripping and mysterious

In his first English language film, Quebeçois director Denis Villeneuve has produced a masterful thriller that is also an engrossing study of a smalltown America battered by recession, fear and the unrelenting elements.
A hulking Hugh Jackman leads a powerful ensemble cast as Keller Dover, a carpenter whose daughter goes missing on a stormy Thanksgiving afternoon. Suspicions immediately fall on local loner Alex Jones (Paul Dano) whose rusting Rv is spotted at the scene of the disappearance. Jones is detained but remains mute during questioning. When he is released, Dover seeks to take the law into his own hands.

Hanif Kureishi and Roger Michell have combined to create a tender, insightful portrait of a stagnant marriage, and a film of considerable substance
• Read our review of The Fifth Estate
• Read our review of The Invisible Woman
Roger Michell's new film - in which Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan try to jumpstart their ailing marriage with a Paris mini-break - plays out like a British, middle-aged Before Midnight. It is brittle and bitter, petty and parochial – where Linklater's, which revisited lovers Jesse and Celine, on hols seven years having finally got together, was good-looking even when things got ugly. For much of its running time, Michell's is plain old cross.
And while Linklater's script was written with his returning stars, Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, Le Week-End is Michell's latest collaboration with writer Hanif Kureishi, following The Buddha of Suburbia on TV, then The Mother (2006) and Venus (2008). This feels by far their most personal.

I shall honestly try not to complain about the studios weird habit of shoving everything into one month of the year this year. I shall honestly try! I know the complaint is as tired as their inability to think outside of the Christmas Box. This post is brought to you by tonight's news that Sony Pictures Classic will open Foxcatcher, the true crime story of Olympic wrestler brothers and the schizophrenic who murdered one of them, the same day as their other Oscar hopeful The Past (December 20th) from Oscar winning Iranian director Asghar Farhadi. This post was also brought to you by the sorry news that Spike Jonze's fascinating looking Her was recently pushed back to December, too, despite looking like a perfect fall title... like a Lost in Translation kind of moodpiece that could really use some air on both sides of it to breathe a little in the imagination.

Update: Josh Trank took to Twitter to put a stop to this rumor writing, "The casting rumor floating around today isn't true.... the end." The original post follows. Chronicle director Josh Trank is slated to make his sophomore effort a reboot of Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox and while the film has a March 6, 2015 release date a cast has yet to be officially assembled. There are, however, rumors Trank will reteam with Chronicle and recent star of Fruitvale Station, Michael B. Jordan, who's been tipped for the role of the Human Torch while "Girls" star Allison Williams may take on the role of Sue Storm (aka The Invisible Woman). Now The Wrap is reporting Miles Teller who stars in this weekend's limited opener The Spectacular Now may lead the superhero family as Mr. Fantastic. None of these rumors have yet been confirmed, but it isn't as if there are...

It was recently revealed that "Girls" actress Allison Williams is one of several actresses being considered for the upcoming "Fantastic Four" reboot. While it wasn't specifically mentioned, it's likely that she's up for the role of Susan Storm/The Invisible Woman, the character Jessica Alba played in the last two films. The Wrap is now reporting that director Josh Trank is considering his "Chronicle" star Michael B. Jordan to play the role of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, the character that Chris Evans played. In the comics, Johnny Storm and Susan Storm are siblings. It's not clear how that will be handled if Jordan, a black actor, ends up being hired. Filming is set to begin next month, so we'll get all the casting details soon.

Director Josh Trank and Fox are looking to get their Fantastic Four reboot into production, and now casting rumors are starting to hit the web. It was recently mentioned that Girls star Allison Williams could end up playing Sue Storm aka The Invisible Woman. Now today, TheWrap is reporting that Trank is looking to team back up with Chronicle star Michael B. Jordan for the film, apparently he's up for the role of Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, who was played by Chris Evans in the first two films.

I hope no one thinks Marvel needs to make an Iron Man 4 after Iron Man 3 (read my review here) ends its run with over $1 billion. Of course, continuing on and on with a successful franchise makes sense in the short terms, but if they can continue to mine their comic archives why risk franchise fatigue? The smartest thing Marvel ever did was finding ways to introduce a variety of their comic characters inside their other films and create an attachment from one to the next, even if that attachment was as small as Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury character. Now they have an established superhero world where the introduction of a man born during the Great Depression can still be alive in present day and fight alongside a god from another universe and a radioactive Hulk. In Guardians of the Galaxy we'll get a talking raccoon and something...

After making a splash with the surprise, found footage, superhero, hit Chronicle, director Josh Trank took his success to the big time and is now attached to direct 20th Century Fox's reboot of Fantastic Four which is slated to hit theaters in 2015. Now it sounds like he might be bringing one of his Chronicle stars with him as The Wrap has learned Michael B. Jordan is in contention to play Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, in the hopeful new comic book franchise. As of right now Jordan has had several meetings at Fox for the role, but the ultimate decision comes down to his chemistry with the other actors. More below! However, that raises some questions. First of all, just recently we learned that Allison Williams was up for the only female team member role in Fantastic Four, that of Sue Storm, who becomes The Invisible Woman. Considering the...

TheWrap is reporting that Chronicle star Michael B. Jordan is in talks to reunite with director Josh Trank for the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. Jordan is said to be up for the role of Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, played by Chris Evans in the first two films. Though just a rumor at this point, Jordan's prior working relationship with Trank could make it a reality. Previous casting rumors for the film include "Girls" star Allison Williams in an unspecified role that many believe to be Sue Storm aka The Invisible Woman. Details are currently few on the project all around outside of Trank directing from script by Seth Grahame-Smith, Michael Green and Jeremy Slater. According to The Wrap, Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle, House, Red Tails) is in talks to play the Human Torch in Josh Trank's upcoming reboot of the franchise, The Fantastic Four. While 20th Century Fox has declined to comment on this news, "numerous individuals" close to the production have reportedly told the site that the actor has had multiple meetings with the studio and has a good relationship with the director after their work together on Chronicle. His chances now depend on whether or not he has chemistry with the other young actors who are in contention for the movie. Of course, this sheds doubt on the recent reports that Alison Williams has been courted to play The Invisible Woman as it wouldn't make an awful lot of sense if she and Jordan played brother and sister! Regardless, Jordan is a fantastic actor, although it's possible that this decision may...

From VancouverFilm.Net comes word that director Josh Trank ("Chronicle") is in pre-production on Fox' "The Fantastic Four" reboot, working title "Henry Street", scheduled to start shooting in Vancouver mid-June 2013, for producer Matthew Vaughan ("X-Men: First Class").
Aiming for a more "...grounded superhero and sci-fi..." action adventure, the screenplay by Jeremy Slater is being 'polished' by best-selling author, screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith ("Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter").

Twentieth Century Fox will release a new take on Marvel Comics' "Fantastic Four", March 6, 2015, to be directed by Josh Trank ("Chronicle"), from a screenplay by Michael Green and Jeremy Slater.
The 2005 "Fantastic Four" feature and 2007 sequel "Rise of the Silver Surfer" were directed by Tim Story, starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis.
It is unfortunate that Fox does not have screen rights to Marvel Comics' first mutant, 'Namor the Sub-Mariner'.
Namor was originally in development with Universal and now sits with Disney.
Many fans would be interested in seeing the comic book secret love affair between 'Sue Storm Richards', aka 'The Invisible Woman' and Namor, in the new movie.
