For the first time ever, the 2017 Primetime Emmys will hand out an award for Outstanding Music Supervision, acknowledging the creative contributions made by the music supervisors on TV series. It’s an award that’s long overdue; music supervision is an often misunderstood art form thought to be as simple as pulling songs off an iPod. “There’s so much work that goes into it that you don’t see on the screen,” says Amanda Krieg Thomas,...

Now nine episodes into its first season, The Handmaid’s Tale has firmly established itself as one of the best shows of 2017.
Adapted from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, the Hulu original series tells the story of women placed in servitude -- and subjected to ritualized rape in order to stave off infertility -- shortly after the fall of the U.S. government to a totalitarian and Christian fundamentalist government known as Gilead. At the center of this near-future dystopian saga (and the audience’s narrator) is Offred (Elisabeth Moss), a woman caught while trying to flee to Canada and eventually forced to become a handmaid in the household of Commander Fred Waterford and his wife, Serena Joy (played by Joseph Fiennes and Yvonne Strahovski).
Since its premiere, The Handmaid’s Tale has earned critical praise for its effective (and horrifying) storytelling led by showrunner Bruce Miller, as well as its chilling timeliness as it relates to the...

“Nothing is answered. Everything is answered. And then it ends.”
That’s the official synopsis for The Leftovers series finale (“The Book of Nora”) -- and it’s quite accurate to what played out in the show’s final chapter on Sunday evening.
Launched with a mystery -- the sudden departure of two percent of the world’s population -- The Leftovers always had one big question looming over the entire series: Where did those people go? But from the very beginning, co-creator Damon Lindelof said the point of the series was not to answer that question. The Leftovers was always about those left behind and how they moved forward with their lives.

Stop us if you've heard this one before: A group of criminals meet up for a gun deal. It goes bad – very bad. And the rest of the story, you ask? "Doesn't matter!" Martin Scorsese exclaims, laughing. "You don't need it. We're beyond that now." The burly, bearded man sitting next to him – British director Ben Wheatley – wholeheartedly agrees. "There's only, like, 12 characters in this movie anyway," he adds. "There are no twists, because it's either going to be that one or that one or that one. So what's the point?...

The Best Musical Moments of 2016The Best Musical Moments of 2016Adriana Floridia12/28/2016 4:41:00 PMThere's nothing quite as beautiful as when a film has an extraordinary musical moment. It's especially impressive in films that aren't musicals, as these moments are often risky, out-of-the-blue, and special moments that catch us off guard but add another dimension to the whole. Oftentimes musical moments become iconic: think Ferris Bueller singing in the parade, the cast of Magnolia mouthing to Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" or the spontaneous dance scene in The Breakfast Club. Countless moments like these have become stand-out aspects of the films in which they live, and 2016 was no exception. While many of the films on this list are music themed, just as many are not. Whether or not the film's plot or genre centered around music, all of these 2016 entries were the most memorable moments from their films. We compiled...

Cameron Crowe’s Showtime series “Roadies” will finally debut this Sunday, June 26. The 10-episode show chronicles the wild and adventurous side of a committed group of roadies who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed along the way.
IndieWire’s Ben Travers gave the three episodes he saw a B, writing that the series “needs direction, but life on the bus is fun with Cameron Crowe.” He adds that “‘Roadies’ exemplifies the best of Crowe’s earnest exuberances, as well as the potholes he should now know how to avoid.”

For the past 27 years, director Cameron Crowe has specialized in making films about earnest, “uncool” people who live and die by their passions. From “Say Anything…” to “Almost Famous,” Crowe’s films focus on that feeling of intense love, for people, for places, and especially for music. His upcoming Showtime TV series “Roadies” continues with that theme by focusing on a makeshift family of roadies for the fictional rock group the Staten-House Band. Starring Luke Wilson as Bill the tour manager and Carla Gugino as Shelli the production manager, “Roadies” follows the road crew as their lives are about to change with the arrival of a financial advisor who wants to overhaul their latest tour. The pilot was just released online ahead of its June 26th premiere date for those who are just itching to see what Crowe’s next project looks like. Below, IndieWIRE has the five best Cameron Crowe-isms from the very first episode of “Roadies.”

1. Music As Organizing Life Principle
Cameron Crowe began his career writing for Rolling Stone magazine as a rock journalist; his first cover story was on The Allman Brothers Band tour in which he not only interviewed the band, but the entire road crew as well. This period of his life served as inspiration for “Almost Famous,” Crowe’s love letter to rock ‘n’ roll, but it has also clearly inspired “Roadies,” as the series affectionately documents the people whose lives revolve around making sure musicians have everything they need to perform their magic. Bill and Shelli desperately try to maintain order in an industry that feeds off of disorder, dealing with annoying, violent childen, crazy stalkers, and even the occasional firearm. But they, and the rest of the large ensemble cast, do it because of the music.
2. Fandom, or How To Maintain Love In The Face of All Obstacles
One of the major subplots in the pilot involves Kelly Ann (Imogen Poots), a young roadie who’s leaving the tour to go to film school in New York on a half-scholarship. She says she can “no longer hear the music anymore,” and she thinks the longer she stays on the tour, her love for not just the Staten-House Band, but music in general will slowly fade away. Crowe’s work often features a protagonist who’s love is frequently tested by numerous obstacles, and “Roadies” is no different as Kelly Ann’s determination to leave heightens when she sees the road crew threatened by management. But eventually, that resolve slowly crumbles as she realizes the family she’s leaving behind.
3. Heart-On-Your-Sleeve, Inspirational Montages
Though montages are frequently used as cheap emotional gimmickry, the best one’s still always stand out. Luckily, the “Roadies” pilot has many montages, so if one reads as bland, there’s another one along the way that could reach its potential. There’s a montage of the indie folk band The Head and The Heart doing a soundcheck, another of the road crew hard at work for their next gig, and finally the cheesiest, but most effective montages of all features a character running towards what has been in their heart all along.
4. Honesty and Authenticity Above All Else
When the financial advisor Reg Whitehead (Rafe Spall) comes on the tour, he immediately fires a beloved old roadie (Ron White) for being under federal investigation for reselling items left in storage units by victims of Hurricane Katrina. Next, he gathers the crew to talk about branding, market potential, and keeping costs to a minimum. Naturally, this prompts a negative response from the crew who know exactly what it takes to keep everything afloat, but it inspires a tirade from Kelly Ann who smells that Reg isn’t even a music fan (he calls Mumford and Sons “The Mumford Sons”). She preaches authentic feeling that a band’s music can inspire as the only brand worth following. “You either love what you do or get the fuck out,” she says.
5. A Romance At The Center
Crowe loves romance about as much as he loves classic rock, so naturally there will be a romance at the center of “Roadies.” Though details are scant in the pilot, Bill and Shelli were once in a relationship that’s now long since over. Shelli is currently married to a production manager on the Taylor Swift tour, and Bill sleeps with twenty-somethings to numb the end of his relationship. But there are still sparks between them and all the bickering can’t conceal their true feelings. One can reasonably predict that they will be in each other’s arms soon enough.

The Walking Dead has been getting a lot right lately. The second half of Season 6 has been one of the show’s finest runs since the outbreak began, with a grand balance of intense drama, some great new characters, and a fascinating ‘larger world’ that has seriously boosted the authenticity and permanence of the show.
In many ways, the mid-season felt like a beginning. Just because the main group has settled, it doesn’t mean the world around them has, with countless zombies still littering the land and the ‘survival of the fittest’ ensuring that the majority of people left alive are marauding killers.

Film-to-television show adaptations have been popular across genres for quite some time. Most recently, there’s been the success (and undue cancellation!) of “Hannibal” and the eerie A&E drama “Bates Motel.” Noah Hawley’s brilliant reimagining of “Fargo” for FX is perhaps the most prominent example of the practice and has already been renewed for a third season. Of course, there are certain television shows that spun-off popular films but didn’t pan out (looking at you, Jennifer Aniston in the short-lived tv version of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”), and we’ve found one in the lost episodes of “Fast Times,” a small-screen version of Amy Heckerling’s cult classic “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Read More: The 20 Greatest Musical Moments In The Films Of Cameron Crowe Famously penned by Cameron Crowe and which provided his entry into filmmaking, the script for the film was based on his...

Alright, you’ve had your 100% outrage about Emma Stone’s character’s ¼ Hawaiian lineage, you haven’t accepted Cameron Crowe’s mostly apology, and you’re still heated over how bad his latest movie “Aloha” is. The film and its “racial weirdness” may be ill-advised, but we can probably all agree that Cameron Crowe, at the very least, knows how to put together a decent mixtape. While the “Aloha” soundtrack features 19 songs, including a new track written by Sigur Rós' Jónsi and Alex Somers, the full movie contains nearly 60 songs. So on top of cuts by Fleetwood Mac, Beck, Kurt Vile, David Crosby, and more, “Aloha” the movie also features songs by The Who, The Rolling Stones, Mogwai, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The Gap Band, Tears For Fears, and Daryl Hall & John Oates — Emma Stone and Bill Murray dancing to the last cut might just be the best moment in the film.

But on his IFC comedy series, Portlandia, he's absolutely clueless when it comes to hip-hop history. In this sketch from Thursday's episode, partner-in-crime Carrie Brownstein wants Armisen to join her at a hip hop show, so she – quite hilariously – schools her friend on the genre's major movements.
61 Reasons to Love 2014: 'Portlandia' Season Four
Brownstein means business, so she starts at the very beginning – late-Seventies New York City.

For such a gloriously gritty, deliciously dark TV show, Breaking Bad has one hell of a frolicsome soundtrack at times.
The music is for so many reasons, part of the show’s genius. It would be so simple to descend further into the intricate duskiness of a meth-cooking drama; to soundtrack drug-induced confusion with vibrant, 60′s psychedelica, and drug-making montages with ‘Kid A’-era Radiohead. But Breaking Bad is never the show to go down the obvious route, is it?
By juxtaposing lighthearted music with the dark realities of the drug world, Breaking Bad comes off as something very different. It’s black-humoured and strangely moving at times; it feels like Breaking Bad doesn’t take itself too seriously. And actually, that’s hugely appealing; there’s nothing more intimidating when you start watching a show, than being thrown in at the deep end of a completely different world.

The Red Carpet at the Dolby Theatre was a flurry of activity as preparations for the 86th Oscar ceremony were in high gear that also include a plan B in case of heavy rain that could threaten on Oscar Sunday. Looks like Paramount’s Noah will get here just in the nick of time on its March release date.
Decorating the red carpet are scenes from past Academy Award winners and nominees. The 10 statues lining the walkway leading up to the theater were positioned and the new electronic grid featuring this year’s nominees was hung high above the carpet.

Chelsea Handler struck back at the New York Times for pushing her to the margins in a recent article about Jimmy Fallon and other late night TV hosts. "This is about being noted as a parenthetical, reaffirming what I feel has been an underlying, yet consistent inconsistency with how I am handled as the only woman in a traditionally male field," Handler wrote in an editorial for The Huffington Post on Friday.

The Midwest is currently so cold, boiling water is magically turning into snow, but it's not all doom and gloom out there – there's still midseason TV to look forward to. Once considered the bastard stepchild of scheduling and a ratings sand trap when it came to launching new shows, midseason TV has slowly come into its own. Sure, it may not be as hyped or as glamorous as the fall TV schedule, but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of reasons to tune in. Here are 15 new and returning programs...

CBS’ How I Met Your Mother is as synonymous with music as it is with questions about Ted’s future wife.
From Robin Sparkles to “You Just Got Slapped,” the show has served up plenty of its own original songs. But it’s also made smart, clever use of popular tunes to create many unforgettable, emotional scenes.

Musical television is becoming increasingly more common, building on the popularity of programmes like Glee with the emergence of hit shows such as Smash and Nashville but let’s take a little time to remember that musical moments have never really been restricted to shows about music.
For decades, non-musical shows have been experimenting and diversifying narrative techniques by including songs within the diegesis of the episodes themselves. This has been predominantly used in the comedy genre and is usually for comic effect but there have been a few other shows that have delved into the world of the musical. It is relatively rare, however, to find shows that have composed specific songs, pieces and in some cases entire musicals for the purpose of producing a musical episode. More often, the cast will perform covers, as in the Grey’s Anatomy episode “Song Beneath The Song” or 30 Rock’s rendition of “Midnight Train To Georgia.

You know what they say: “If music be the food of love, play on.” That might not be all that relevant a quote, actually, but it’s at least hopefully got you thinking about music, so there we go. Music is one of mankind’s universal pleasures – it’d be near impossible to find somebody who hates every type of music, after all. Music plays a huge part in so many things, but it’s also an integral part of what makes the movies so awesome. Sometimes you’ll see a film and you won’t remember anything about the soundtrack, of course, but movies are often improved by great music, too.
Which is why we’ve thrown together this list of the best and most memorable music-based movie moments from the last year. 2013, on the whole, gave us some pretty great movies, many of which included some brilliantly-employed musical scenes.

BBC4′s Sound of Cinema: The Music That Made The Movies is proving to be a fascinating and hugely enjoyable series, reminding us of a wealth of musical moments that have defined the films they’ve featured in and thereby the history of film itself. It is a series that is focussed on soundtracks and musical cues, rather than musical films themselves, but it has gotten me thinking about musicals and their seemingly unparalleled ability to move and enthrall.
The history of musicals is so rich and varied that any list shy of 100 is going to miss something important and so this very brief top ten is bound to be reductive, but hopefully everyone can find something resonant here.

Last year, Glee introduced Kitty, the new head Cheerio with a mean streak. But throughout the course of the fourth season, her edge dulled and we were asked to sympathize with a character who had spent weeks forcing an eating disorder on her "best friend." This year, we're getting a new mean girl, Bree, and according to actress Erinn Westbrook, the writers will be reveling in her bitchiness for quite some time.
In addition to learning that relieving piece of information, Erinn also broke down the show's complex audition process and explained how it feels to have gone from gleek to Glee star!
ETonline: Were you a fan of Glee before being cast?
Erinn Westbrook: I was a fan, which makes this all the more exciting. I love to sing, I love to dance, I love to act, so clearly I gravitated towards this show prior to the audition.

Gaming is a multi-faceted experience. Above and beyond film, we have gameplay to turn it into a truly interactive artform. Anyone who disagrees is wrong. Chances are they haven’t experienced one of those moments where everything comes together at once – the story, the gameplay, the visuals and one of the ignored parts of the experience: the sound.
Of course, the ultimate expression of sound, is music. Music is the string that ties the package together. Without it, it just wouldn’t be the same experience. Some games forego a musical score to great effect (i.e. acclaimed indie classic Limbo). The music in Limbo is noticeable by its absence, which goes to show what a big part of the game it can sometimes be. Its presence or absence changes the mood as vibrantly as colour does for paintings.

MTV, a new roommate played by Chloe Sevigny and winter are all coming to Portlandia. Series creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein led a conference call Tuesday, previewing the show's third season and winter special, which Brownstein described as "an 11th episode" distinct from the rest of the season. "We never show Portland as the rainy city that it can sometimes be," she said. "[It's] having the characters deal with the darkness and kind of dreariness of winter." But beloved holiday films won't be comedic targets on the special. "We didn't really reference any movies,...

While many of music’s biggest stars remembered Whitney Houston at the decidedly somber Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday night, Bobby Brown was onstage with New Edition in Mississippi, tearfully dedicating his show to his ex-wife. TMZ reported that Brown was “in and out of crying fits” after hearing the news of Houston’s death before the show, but he still went on with his performance. “First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all,” he told fans, according to The Associated Press. “Second, I would like to say, ‘I love you, Whitney.’ The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage.”
Back in Beverly Hills, as fans held a vigil for Houston outside the hotel, Davis asked his guests for a moment of silence. “I do have a heavy heart, and I am personally devastated...

The morning after the tragic death of Whitney Houston, the cause of the singer’s sudden demise at age 48 remains a mystery. But sordid details about her last days and evidence in her Beverly Hills Hotel room are beginning to surface. An unresponsive Houston was found in her hotel bathtub, and police found prescription drugs in the room, sources told TMZ. The L.A. Coroner officials removed her body from the hotel at 1:50 a.m. Pt and will conduct an autopsy today, ABC News reports.
Houston’s cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, and her mother, Cissy Houston, both spoke to Whitney earlier on Saturday and discussed their plans for the Clive Davis party that night in the hotel. Davis, Houston’s longtime friend and mentor, spoke at the party, dedicating the evening to her. “I do have a heavy heart, and I am personally devastated by someone so close to me for so many years,...

Whitney Houston died this afternoon at the age of 48. The Grammy award-winning performer’s death was confirmed to the Associate Press by her rep, Kristen Foster. According to TMZ, paramedics were allegedly called to the Beverly Hilton hotel earlier today after Houston was found “unresponsive” in her room; though an attempt was made to revive the singer, she was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Beverly Hills police Lt. Our annual awards jamboree went into an unexpected coma due to Oscar exhaustion but the film bitch awards are back as we try and really not just sorta wrap up the 2010 film year. So here are Best Poster, Sexpot and Diva Of The Year featuring achievements from Cher, Joan Rivers, I Am Love, Fish Tank, Burlesque, Love and Other Drugs and yes even Alice in Wonderland (among other films).
So that's six pages down. One more to go. Woohoooooo almost finis! (Just in time for the New Oscar predictions for 2011 which always kick off in some form on April 1st ). We'll fill in the Best Scenes next (final page) but I'm still debating various efforts, like this number below for Best Musical Number in a Non Musical Film.

Three more movies... But in truth I'm not sure which day we're on. I may have scrambled up the chronology just like Blue Valentine does. I am typing this on Saturday for publication on Sunday about movies from Friday. Where am I? When Am I? I spent today being sick so no more movies. The sickness is why, even though it seemed like i was seeing a bajillion movies, I really wasn't. I worry that I missed a few great pictures and that I saw too many that ended up with or already had distribution deals that I could have seen later. But it's my first Sundance trip. I was doin' it wrong. Better luck next time.
